-Innovative Parallella board provides powerful, high-performance embedded computing capability in a compact, affordable, energy-efficient package

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the global distributor for engineers, has signed a significant distribution agreement with Adapteva, producer of the innovative Epiphany multicore coprocessor and developer of the popular Parallella-16 board.

The partnership will bring the Parallella board directly to customers in Europe and Asia, which comprise almost 50% of the Parallella community, and will enable quicker, easier access to this energy-efficient technology.

Parallella was introduced to the industry through a highly successful Kickstarter crowdsourcing campaign with the objective of democratising access to supercomputing. The open-source project now has thousands of users around the globe in one of the industry’s most active programming communities. The open-source single board computer includes the Epiphany III 16 core co-processor on the board alongside the Xilinx Zynq Z7000 dual core ARM processor. The credit card sized device can be used as a development platform, embedded engine, teaching platform or research tool and is easily scalable by clustering boards to create a mini-supercomputer for advanced parallel computing applications.

“As a leading electronics distributor, RS has the experience and reach to provide wider access to the Parallella board around the globe,” said Jonathan Boxall, Global Head of Semiconductors at RS Components. “We are energised by the initial success of Adapteva and are committed to help expand the success to a much broader range of users via our worldwide network.”

“Adapteva is changing the way that people do computing as traditional approaches are nearing the end of their power efficiency,” said Andrea Olofsson, CEO and Founder of Adapteva. “Parallella puts new capabilities in the hands of the novice and the expert. We are making parallel programming an everyday, low cost, accessible technology.”

The Parallella board is available in three models and can be purchased from RS for same-day despatch from the company’s global distribution centres.

SIR-Spheres(R) y-90 Resin Microspheres Recommended in New European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) Clinical Guidelines for Treating Metastatic Colorectal Cancer (mCRC)

leave a comment »

BONN, Germany /PRNewswire/ — Newly published European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) clinical guidelines for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) endorse radioembolisation, specifically with Yttrium-90 resin microspheres, as a clinically proven technology to “prolong time to liver tumour progression” in mCRC patients who have failed to respond to available chemotherapy options.

SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres, the lead product of Sirtex Medical Limited, is the only product used for radioembolisation or Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) that is recommended in the new ESMO guidelines.

The new guidelines, authored on behalf of the ESMO Guidelines Working Group by Professors Eric Van Cutsem (Leuven, Belgium), Andres Cervantes (Valencia, Spain), Bernard Nordlinger (Paris, France) and Dirk Arnold(Freiberg, Germany) were published online in a 4 September 2014 supplement to the Annals of Oncology.[1]

“We are very pleased that the authors of major international clinical guidelines in the treatment of mCRC have singled out radioembolisation, and particularly our unique product, SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres, as an appropriate treatment for patients with colorectal liver metastases that have failed to respond to chemotherapy,” said Nigel Lange, CEO of Sirtex Medical Europe GmbH.  “We believe the new ESMO clinical guidelines will have an immediate effect on improving patient access to SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres across Europe.”

As clinical evidence for the new ESMO recommendation, the authors cited a multi-centre randomised controlled study conducted by Professor Alain Hendlisz (Brussels, Belgium) and colleagues.  The Hendlisz study was a “Phase III trial comparing intravenous fluorouracil infusion with yttrium-90 resin microspheres for liver-limited metastatic colorectal cancer refractory to standard chemotherapy.”[2]

In April 2013, Sirtex announced that it had completed recruitment of patients for SIRFLOX, a 500-patient randomised clinical study that compares the use of SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres in combination with standard chemotherapy to standard chemotherapy alone in the treatment of patients recently diagnosed with inoperable mCRC, which is much earlier in the treatment paradigm.  Data from SIRFLOX are expected in 2015.

About Metastatic Colorectal Cancer

The new ESMO clinical guidelines state that 447,000 cases of colorectal cancer (CRC) are reported annually inEurope, and 215,000 European patients die from the disease each year.  It is the second most-common cancer among both men and women.  When CRC spreads, or metastasises, to other parts of the patient’s body it becomes mCRC, which is the subject of the new ESMO guidelines.

Of critical importance, one-fourth (25%) of all patients who are newly diagnosed with cancer in their bowels already have mCRC at the time of their diagnosis.  One-half (50%) of all colorectal cancer patients will eventually suffer from mCRC. The liver is generally the first and most frequent site of these metastases, which is why the multidisciplinary cancer teams that ESMO recommends to direct the management of mCRC increasingly use combinations of systemic and local treatments, such as liver-directed radioembolisation with SIR-Spheres Y-90resin microspheres to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

About SIR-Spheres Y-90 Resin Microspheres

SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres are used to deliver SIRT (also known as radioembolisation), a proven technology for inoperable liver tumours that delivers substantial, targeted doses of radiation directly to the cancer.  In a minimally invasive treatment, millions of SIR-Spheres microspheres are infused via a catheter into the liver where they selectively target liver tumours with a dose of internal radiation up to 40 times higher than conventional radiotherapy, while sparing the adjacent healthy liver tissue.

Manufactured by Sirtex Medical Limited, SIR-Spheres microspheres are approved for the treatment of liver tumours that are unable to be removed through surgery in Australia, the European Union (CE Mark), Argentina (ANMAT),Brazil, Switzerland, Turkey and several other countries in Asia such as India, Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

SIR-Spheres microspheres also have a full Pre-Market Approval (PMA) by the FDA and are indicated in the United States for the treatment of non-resectable metastatic liver tumours from primary colorectal cancer in combination with intra-hepatic artery chemotherapy using floxuridine.  Additionally, SIR-Spheres microspheres are supplied in countries such as Israel, New Zealand, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand.

Available at more than 700 treatment centres, over 45,000 doses of SIR-Spheres microspheres have been supplied worldwide.

®SIR-Spheres is a registered trademark of Sirtex SIR-Spheres Pty Ltd.

Largest Telecom in South America Selects Chatsworth Products Server Cabinets for New Data Center

leave a comment »

— Passive Cooling® Technology Helps Company Achieve LEED Gold Status

MEXICO CITY /PRNewswire/ — Telefonica Vivo, the largest integrated telecom in South America, provides services to more than 100 million clients in Brazil. When it became necessary to consolidate seven data centers into one facility, Vivo trusted Chatsworth Products (CPI) to provide a solution that would not only help sustain the network, but make it the most energy-efficient data center in South America.

The challenge was to build a data center that could sustain all of the company’s prepay and contract mobile segment for the next 10 years, while adhering to the company’s strict commitment to sustainability and efficiency in all operational aspects. One key component in achieving this would be a server cabinet that could provide reliable equipment support and the best airflow management capabilities possible.

Silvio Mendonca, Vivo’s data center manager, knew the company’s servers were becoming denser and that heat distribution, especially in high-density spots, would be a huge challenge.

To resolve this issue, Mendonca chose CPI’s GF-Series GlobalFrame® Cabinet System with Vertical Exhaust Ducts, a combination that supports high-density applications using CPI Passive Cooling® Solutions to isolate and redirect hot exhaust air out of the room.

“We studied a lot of options. Every company offered cabinets with Vertical Exhaust Ducts, but none of them was able to show the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis that we requested, except for CPI,” Mendonca said.

The outstanding results Vivo achieved using CPI Passive Cooling helped make Telefonica’s data center the country’s first data center to achieve LEED Gold Certification and Tier III status for design and construction.

“We measure our data center today, and it’s more efficient than what the CFD said. The PUE on the CFD was 1.7 and in use it’s 1.5, which is very impressive in Brazil’s standards. The combination of everything we did in the data center gave us points toward the LEED certification process,” Mendonca stated. “CPI proved that this rack is THE rack that we needed.”

Chief among these are buildings containing fashion boutiques that enjoy outstanding access in that they are directly connected to stations, with these including LUMINE at the Ikebukuro and Shinjuku Stations, as well as Atre at the Akihabara, Ueno, Ebisu, and Shinagawa Stations, all of which lie along the JR Yamanote Line. These buildings are popular for their shops that contain the trendiest fashions of the season.

Get hold of the latest fashion trends in Japan!
In this piece we would like to focus on LUMINE in Shinjuku. Shinjuku Station is a terminal station boasting one of the world’s largest numbers of passengers in transit in that it is a waypoint for 12 lines that include the JR Yamanote Line and Chuo-Sobu Line, as well as even subway and private railway lines. Visitors are treated to outstanding access from any of these spots, and since the buildings are directly connected to the stations they can also enjoy shopping in an efficient manner.

LUMINE features about 400 shops in the Shinjuku area alone that handle clothes, shoes, and bags that are popular in Japan. The LUMINE EST SHINJUKU shop at the east exit of Shinjuku Station offers numerous reasonable, casual items geared towards younger people, while the appeal of LUMINE Shinjuku at the south exit lies in its abundance of high quality items with a trendy feel and complete lineup of any and all of the truly hippest fashion items from Tokyo. Since the stores are open until 22:00 they have the advantage that you can enjoy shopping at them until late. There are also plenty of shops offering tax and duty exemptions, which are bound to please travelers.

Featured items that come highly recommended for this fall and winter include knitted garments, which LUMINE has in an abundance of different varieties, as well as coats with a men’s-like design. Styles that incorporate sporty elements, which have been much talked-about in fall-winter collections from around the world, as well as masculine coats, checkered patterns, and a 60s style that incorporates a glittery feel are also worth checking out. Having amassed such a wide array of shops, LUMINE can achieve such select, cutting-edge styles that consumers want!

Those wishing to go shopping for better deals get their chance during the January sales period, while before the end of the year is naturally best suited for getting your hands on original merchandise without delay. Moreover, when it comes to New Year’s sales a great many ”grab bags” that assemble together fashion items from each brand that customers can get their hands on at reasonable prices are put on sale, so don’t pass them by.

There are plans to introduce three brands from LUMINE at the Japan Travel Fair 2014 that will be held at Takashimaya in Singapore from October 3 – 6. We encourage everyone who is interested to stop by the fair and experience LUMINE fashion for themselves.
