Thousands of Students Around the World Participate in Inaugural TOEFL® Young Students Series GO English! Project

PRINCETON, N.J., May 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Educational Testing Service (ETS), creator of the TOEFL® test, received over 400 projects for its TOEFL® Young Students Series GO English! project — “Our Town. In Our Words.” Launched in October 2014, the global campaign was designed to inspire students, under the guidance of their English-language teachers, to practice and improve their English skills in the classroom.

More than 3,500 students from 23 countries used their English-language skills to share what is great about their towns through video, radio, poster and newspaper column advertisements. Students, under the guidance of their teachers, were encouraged to be creative and use their knowledge of the English language to effectively communicate their messages.

“We’re proud of the students and teachers who participated in the TOEFL Young Students Series GO English! project,” said David Payne, Vice President and COO of Global Education at ETS. “It’s becoming increasingly important for students at younger ages to develop their English-language skills, and the number and quality of the projects submitted show us just how committed these schools are to helping students prepare for the future.”

Participating schools and classes received certificates and a plaque as part of a thank-you kit, as well as English-learning educational and promotional materials to support teachers in the classroom. ETS in-country partners in several countries also hosted ceremonies for participating schools.

The campaign is part of the TOEFL Young Students Series, a natural extension of the ETS TOEFL program, and is specifically geared to the English language learning needs of younger students. It includes the TOEFL® Primary™ tests, designed for students ages 8+ to set the right foundation for successful development of English-language skills, and the TOEFL Junior® tests, designed for students ages 11+.

Macalester College Goes 100% Solar And Saves Millions Of Dollars With SunEdison

BELMONT, Calif., April 16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — SunEdison, Inc. (NYSE: SUNE), the world’s largest renewable energy development company, today announced that it has signed an agreement with Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota to offset 100% of the college’s electricity use with solar energy. Macalester College will save millions of dollars on electricity costs over the 25 year agreement by purchasing a share of output from SunEdison’s community solar gardens.

The SunEdison community solar gardens program enables customers to receive a share of electricity output from a locally sited community solar system. Each month, the customer receives credits on their electricity bill – up to 120% of their electricity usage. At the end of the year, the customer will receive payment from the utility for any excess credits which have not been used.

Compared to other components in the O&G and chemical value chain, growth of automation in terminals lags behind as customers do not have a clear-cut business case to justify return on investment. SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — A social media crisis moves at the speed of light. Raging complaints and defamatory posts go viral in minutes. Audiences will demand honest answers. And they will want them fast. Yet speed is the biggest issue that businesses face with crisis communications on social media.Phillip Raskin, Managing Director of Spectrum Communications explains, “Things took a big turn about 15 years ago when Internet usage and news distribution became widespread, and then it took another several laps around the track about five years ago with Twitter and IM apps becoming the norm.  That kind of speed and extreme pressure can cause a lot of missteps and mistakes that people and companies might not make if their crisis were unfolding at what we used to consider “normal” speed.”

What are some blunders that companies make when dealing with social media crises? Raskin shares his thoughts, “The most common mistake is not understanding soon enough whether they’ve got a serious problem.  It’s natural – companies are full of people, and people are busy, especially in today’s organisations, and there is so much information going back and forth and so much to keep track of.  So there’s often an element of “hoping it will go away” or at least hoping the issue will not grow any further which sometimes results in a delayed reaction, and therefore more trouble down the road.

Another is trying to solve the issue on “your terms” versus the terms of what’s happening.  You see some brands and especially more civic/governmental organisations do that sometimes, especially if they’re more accustomed to controlling the conversation.  That’s usually where an issue gets brought up on a Facebook page or a Tweet and the response comes out something like “we don’t want you to talk about that,” and usually then the reaction becomes worse than the initial issue.  Part of this is being realistic about your situation and where you sit – the Internet almost always supports Goliath over David and companies are increasingly having their operations and business practices called into question.  So understand yourself and your potential vulnerabilities from an outside, dispassionate perspective, and be ready to work with that.  In essence, work with the real world and not the world you want it to be.

Finally, you need to have a defined social media team – and that doesn’t mean you hire a bunch of interns because they’re “digital natives.”  You need a mix of people with crisis experience, company knowledge, authority and perspective.  You need that team to have guidelines and an understanding of key issues and appropriate responses, and you need them to be empowered to act.  This is not like it used to be, where every press release and statement gets vetted by the board or an extended family of suddenly interested parties from every department.  It has to be a framework for responding, with clear escalation points and clear actions and responsibilities, that can be enacted while that board or C-suite group is discussing things.  Otherwise, everything will get stuck in committee and you’ll be getting killed online for hours or days before you can fire back a single Tweet.”

(UTC) have entered into an agreement to ensure the protection and safety of the Vatican Museums’ artwork, spaces and visitors through the deployment of building technologies from UTC companies. According to the terms of the agreement, the parties will work together on integrated solutions spanning HVAC, elevators and escalators, fire detection and alarm, fire suppression and safety, electronic security, access control, video surveillance services and related software solutions, from brands such as Carrier, Otis, Lenel, Kidde, Chubb and Marioff.

SINGAPORE, June 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — More than 200 teachers from around the world, including one from Singapore, are gearing up to take the trip of a lifetime to Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy (HESA) – the ‘game-changing’ experience celebrating its 10th anniversary of inspiring teachers who, in turn, inspire students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and careers.

Created in partnership with the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (USSRC), Honeywell (NYSE:HON) developed the award-winning scholarship program to help middle school math and science teachers become more effective educators in STEM. During the past 10 years, Honeywell has awarded scholarships to 2,176 teachers from 55 countries, including three from Singapore.

This year, Sandi Suat Sie Kum, a teacher at Raffles Girls’ School Secondary in Singapore, is among the 204 teachers from 27 countries chosen to attend one of two five-day programs offered over consecutive weeks from June 11-24 at the USSRC in Huntsville, Ala. Teachers will be given rigorous training focused on science and space exploration including astronaut-style exercises like high-performance jet simulation, scenario-based space mission, land and water survival training, and interactive flight dynamics programs.

Since 2004, educators have shared their experiences and knowledge to more than 2 million students, inspiring many to pursue STEM education and careers. From winning grants from local and federal governments, to entering students in international and NASA educational projects, to creating STEM-focused after school programs, the impact of the program is continuing beyond the classroom. To help mark the program’s decade-long run, 10 HESA alumni have been selected, one representing each year, to be the guests-of-honor at the graduation ceremony on June 23.

Jim Bujold, president of Honeywell Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines), encourages more teachers in the region to apply for this legacy program of Honeywell, which is “all about re-igniting passion in teachers.”

“The experience of discovering new ways of delivering lesson plans will stay with the teachers, who then will leverage it to inspire the next generation of engineers, programmers, mathematicians and astronauts in this country. It is truly not a one-time program,” he said.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, in the last 10 years, the demand for STEM related jobs grew three times faster than jobs in other fields. However, according to the U.S. Education Department, only 16 percent of high school seniors are considered proficient in mathematics and interested in a STEM career. Only half of those students who pursue STEM courses in college actually go on to careers in STEM fields.

Kingyoup Unveils High Throughput Semiconductor Wafer Bonding & Debonding Tool at ECTC 2014

NEW TAIPEI CITY/PRNewswire/ — Kingyoup Optronics Co., Ltd. (“Kingyoup”) during the IEEE Electronics Components and Technology Conference (ECTC) held at Orlando, Florida USA, in May 2014 show-cased their temporary bonding and debonding equipment developed in collaboration with IBM (NYSE:IBM). This equipment is specially designed to meet the microelectronics miniaturization needs of today’s smart, mobile, consumer electronics devices. Specifically, it enables 3D Integrated Circuits, 2.5D Packaging Integration and System applications.

The temporary bonding and debonding equipment uses a hybrid laser debonding solution with an industry-leading throughput of over 60 to 100 wafers per hour. It also supports wafer thinning to less than a human hair thickness (<< 50 um ) for either 200mm or 300mm wafers. A video demonstration of the debonding equipment releasing wafers was shown at the ECTC exhibit booth.

Working together with IBM, Kingyoup has developed a solution that demonstrates lower power consumption and much faster wafer cleaning, leading to high yield and high throughput, and concludes with lower cost of ownership.

Technical presentations by IBM researchers discussed the benefits of this patented laser debonding technology.  The technology can be applied to semiconductor wafer processing and packaging technologies in either wafer level or panel size formats.
