RS Components Begins Distribution of Second-generation RepRapPro Ormerod, Bringing Affordable 3D Printing Technology to Engineers Worldwide

SINGAPORE, Sept. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE: ECM), the global distributor for engineers, today announced availability of the new version of the RepRapPro Ormerod 3D printer which offers extensive versatility and functionality in an easy-to-assemble kit of parts. 3D printing enables electronic and mechanical engineers to quickly and easily realise early design concepts by creating fast-turnaround prototypes, potentially saving months in the product design cycle.

The RepRapPro Ormerod 2 is a single-colour low-cost 3D printing machine that is a full open-source and self-replicating RepRap and is one of the most versatile 3D printers available: it is easy to expand in functionality, fast to replicate and fast to assemble. All the RepRapPro printers, including previous machines such as the Ormerod and Mendel, are capable of self-replicating their own plastic components.

The Ormerod 2 brings several advantages compared to its predecessor, including a much simpler and more integrated assembly with improved instructions and wiring looms for simple plugin connection and no soldering necessary.

Other improvements come in the areas of the build bed, the y-carriage design, bed probe, extruder and power supply, as well as better emissions control and software support. For example, the Ormerod 2 design offers much easier adjustment of the bed level; improved y-axis belt location and retention delivers easier adjustment of belt tension; and a new bed probe now features a four-wire differential device, as well as providing much easier access to the extruder for cleaning purposes. In addition, the power supply is now a 100-240V worldwide input power supply and is a dedicated 12V supply, rather than being an adapted supply, and is more compact with its integration into the machine with no trailing wires. EMI emissions have also been reduced, resulting from a fully shielded design that meets the Class A CE mark.

Specifications of the Ormerod 2 printer include: build volume and speed of 200 x 200 x 200mm and 1800mm/min, respectively; a deposition rate of 33cm3 per hour; accuracy and layer resolution of 0.1mm and 0.01mm, respectively; and ability to print using either PLA or ABS thermoplastic materials. The open-source software designed to run the machine is fully compatible with the original Ormerod printer and will run on a relatively low powered computer running Windows, Linux/Ubuntu or Mac OS.

The RepRapPro Ormerod 2 is shipped ready for assembly as a kit of parts containing all the required components. The complete kit includes: all printed parts; all hardware, including threaded and smooth rods, screws, nuts, washers, belts and bearings; pre-soldered and programmed electronics; MicroSD card and adapter; heated PCB build surface; motors; nozzle assembly and extruder drive mechanism; 100m of 1.75mm-diameter white PLA filament material (weighing approximately 300g); a 100-240V worldwide input power supply (plugs available for EU, UK, US and Australia); plus open-source software to run the machine including firmware for the electronics.

Like the first Ormerod, the Ormerod 2 uses the FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) process, which can build 3D objects in a range of plastics and also in a variety of colours. The process enables the creation of almost any shape that can be modelled on a computer, including some that cannot be produced by traditional manufacturing techniques. 3D printing is fast becoming an essential part of the electronic and mechanical design process. Increasing numbers of companies are beginning to see the benefits of using this technology to create quick-turn-around prototypes and save months in the design cycle. Barriers to adoption in the past have been the cost of hardware and a lack of easy-to-use design software for non-CAD specialists. However, when used in conjunction with the free DesignSpark Mechanical 3D modelling software, the Ormerod 2 3D printing kit will enable design engineers around the world to develop sophisticated concepts and products very quickly and inexpensively.

Korea to Hold Eco-friendly U.N. Biodiversity Meeting

SEOUL, South Korea /PRNewswire/ — South Korea will endeavor to make a meeting on an environmental convention of the United Nations, slated for late this month, eco-friendly by building convention halls using environmentally-sound materials, officials said Thursday.

The 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, dubbed COP 12, takes place at Alpensia resort in PyeongChang, some 180 kilometers southeast of Seoul, from Sept. 29 through Oct. 17, with representatives from 194 countries in attendance.

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), informally known as the Biodiversity Convention, is a multilateral treaty addressing all aspects of biological diversity including genetic resources, species and ecosystems. It is one of the three U.N. conventions aimed at protecting the environment along with the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention to Combat Desertification.

The Ministry of Environment said about 95 percent of the construction material for new convention halls will be from used and reusable products.

The ministry will also introduce IT technologies in building the venues in a bid to minimize waste.

In addition, nine knockdown mobile lavatories that are reusable will be stationed around the convention venues, it said.

An energy-saving lighting system will contribute to reducing electricity consumption and the emission of carbon dioxide.

The ministry said it will put up a large-size digital information display around the venues and provide online notifications, which will help reduce the use of paper by more than 50 percent.

A total of 16 four or eight-seat electric vehicles will be operated during the conference.

In an effort to curb the consumption of disposable products, the ministry will recommend participants to refrain from using unnecessary plastic bottles by installing drinking water facilities.

The ministry plans to provide locally-produced food to participants to reduce greenhouse gases and transportation costs and raise funds for offsetting greenhouse gases, which will be donated to -related institutions after the conference.

“We considered the current trend of large-scale international events that place importance on the environment (in preparation of the meeting),” said Kim Sang-hoon, director-general of Task Force Team.

Global Diamond Demand Reaches Record Levels

-Report highlights need for industry investment to sustain future success

HONG KONG /PRNewswire/ — Global demand for diamond jewellery reached a record high ofUS$79 billion in 2013 according to the inaugural Diamond Insight Report, published today by The De Beers Group of Companies.

Demand is expected to continue to grow over the long-term, driven by the ongoing economic recovery in the US (the world’s largest diamond jewellery market) and the growth of the middle classes in developing markets such asChina and India. Sales of polished diamonds in the US increased seven per cent in 2013, while both India andChina have seen their domestic diamond jewellery markets grow by a compound annual growth rate of 12 per cent in local currency terms between 2008 and 2013.

The report cautions that while diamonds retain their special allure with consumers around the world, future demand levels cannot be taken for granted. The overall category is facing increasingly strong and sophisticated competition from other luxury categories, with diamonds’ share of advertising voice in the US market having reduced within its competitive set.

Global rough diamond production in 2013 increased by seven per cent in carat terms over 2012 levels to a total of around 145 million carats. However, this remains well below the 2005 peak of around 175 million carats. The report further highlights that a forecast reduction in supply from existing sources will likely not be matched by new production coming on-stream in the years ahead and diamond supply is expected to plateau in the second half of the decade before declining from 2020 onwards.

Meanwhile, as mining moves deeper into the earth and towards more remote locations, the extraction process is becoming increasingly complex and costly. The three principal input costs — labour, electricity and diesel — have all seen increases well above local inflation levels in the main diamond producing countries over the last decade and this trend is set to continue.

Substantial investment will be required in diamond production, technology and branding, marketing and retail standards if the industry is to sustain its recent levels of success into the future, the report says.

The report also reveals that:

  • China is the world’s fastest growing market for diamond jewellery sales, with the number of diamond jewellery retail doors in the country increasing by almost 30 per cent between 2010 and 2013.
  • Online has become an increasingly important channel for the diamond industry. Over one in six diamond jewellery purchases in the US was made online in 2013 and in China the internet is already used by a quarter of acquirers for research purposes before purchase.
  • Diamonds were a major contributor to the economic performance of producing nations in 2013. In Botswana, diamonds represented more than 25 per cent of GDP and over 75 per cent of overall exports, whereas inNamibia they represented eight per cent of GDP and almost 20 per cent of all exports.

Philippe Mellier, Chief Executive, De Beers Group, said: “Consumer demand remains the one true source of value for the diamond industry. With demand forecast to increase further from 2013’s record levels, the opportunity for growth is clear. But this must not be seen as cause for complacency. The industry will continue to lose ground to other categories if it does not invest significantly in production, marketing and technology.”
