The Singapore Biennale Returns for Its Fifth Edition with An Atlas of Mirrors

SINGAPORE/PRNewswire/ — Singapore Biennale 2016, one of Asia’s most exciting contemporary visual art exhibitions, opened to the public on 27 October 2016 and will run until 26 February 2017. From monumental sculptures to film and performance art, artworks of various media are curated around nine sub-themes and presented at seven locations, with the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) and SAM at 8Q as anchor venues. The four-month-long international contemporary art exhibition is organised by SAM and commissioned by the National Arts Council of Singapore.

Over 80 percent of the Singapore Biennale artworks are new commissions or adaptations of works. Featuring several site-specific and works never seen before on the biennale circuit, the Biennale artworks respond to the title of An Atlas of Mirrors, and explore notions of space, time, memory, nature, boundaries, agency, identity, displacement and absence.

An Atlas of Mirrors references the atlases and mirrors that have been instrumental in humankind’s exploration of the world as we navigate and map our journeys into the unknown. It is hoped that the evocative title, which guided its curatorial direction, would intrigue and inspire audiences to explore and experience the many ways of seeing our world and ourselves,” says Dr Susie Lingham, Creative Director, Singapore Biennale 2016.

Various programmes will be taking place over the course of the exhibition, including artist and curator talks and tours, artist workshops, community days and a symposium in January 2017.

Singapore Biennale 2016 also marks the inaugural Asian edition of the Benesse Prize, organised by Benesse Holdings, Inc (Benesse) and SAM. Awarded at the Venice Biennale for the last 10 editions, the winner of the 11thBenesse Prize will receive a commission to create a work to be exhibited at Benesse Art Site Naoshima and a cash prize of JPY 3,000,000 from Benesse. The award presentation will take place in January 2017, and the shortlisted artists are Martha Atienza (Philippines/ Netherlands), Bui Cong Khanh (Vietnam), Ade Darmawan (Indonesia), Qiu Zhijie (China) and Pannaphan Yodmanee (Thailand).

OSEA2016 Presents Tech Innovations and Solutions to Improve Business Sustainability in a Challenging Market

Tech Innovations at OSEA2016

With reducing operational costs and increasing capital efficiency now a top priority for oil and gas firms in the value chain, many are turning to technology to achieve lower reliance on human capital through automation and mechanisation, increase personal safety to reduce risks and incidences, and improve communication and data networks to elevate asset performance.

At OSEA2016, Rutledge Omni Services one of the leading providers of safety services for upstream drilling and exploration activities in the region will be unveiling an IoT device that allows real-time personnel tracking on an oil rig. It will be the first solution on their digital platform dedicated specifically for safety, health and security for the oil and gas industry. Conceptualised and developed in Singapore, the location tracker is a first of its kind made to overcome challenges and to serve purposes specific to oil rigs.

“The day rate of a rig is the biggest cost to operators, and therefore time saved translates to dollar savings. Mandatory precautionary drills are a weekly activity on any rig, and the IoT device allows for a head count in real time.  Another time-saving activity is in the quantification of a contractor’s billable time. This can be automated to provide an independent verification of chargeable time sheets. However, the greatest benefit is improved personnel safety. Locating and rescuing injured rig crew will reduce loss time due to injury. Fatalities may be averted because the time taken by search parties to reach the injured will be very much shortened. Help can be correctly directed to the right location of the injured person,” says Anne Joseph, CEO of Rutledge Omni Services.

Showcasing a fleet of agile and adaptable robotic inspection tools, Inuktun will launch the MicroMag and Versatrax Vertical Crawler in Asia at OSEA2016. Inuktun’s Multi-Mission Modular (IM3) technology allows for the systems to be repurposed in the field for a variety of different applications in air or underwater — from pipe inspection to ship hull examination and PTZ camera applications in wells, pressure vessels and caissons.

Developing the LNG Value chain in Asia

Singapore’s ambition to establish itself as the region’s LNG hub, and Asia Pacific accounting for nearly 70 per cent of global LNG demand, provides a promising base for local firms to tap opportunities within this growing sector.

One such example is OSEA2016 exhibitor SSB Cryogenic Equipment, who is a member of Sing Swee Bee Group (SSB Group) – the only Singapore company and one of only four in the world certified by Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) — the global leader with a 2/3 market share of new built LNG carriers, to render LNG membrane global tests for GTT’s cargo containment system. SSB Group will sign a joint venture partnership at OSEA2016 with Gabadi – the first company to obtain a license from GTT for outfitting LNG membrane vessels, for the construction of small-scale LNG membrane vessels, and to develop local capabilities in LNG membrane repair.

SSB Group will also be showcasing their capabilities in membrane tank integrity testing and construction of small-scale LNG membrane vessels suitable for ship-to-ship break-bulk LNG coastal distribution and off-shore storage, as well as their small scale LNG supply chain solutions for Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

AdAsia Enters Greater China Market with Expansion into Taiwan

“Cloud”, a porcelain espresso cup and saucer inspired by contemporary Singapore and traditional Japanese craftsmanship

White cloud over blue sky, produced by Miyama of Japan and Singapore based company HULS Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. was inspired by the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

TOKYO, /PRNewswire/ — HULS Inc., a company which specialises in the global business of Japanese craft industries based in Tokyo and Singapore, launches “Cloud” espresso cup and saucer on 15th December 2016 both in Singapore and in Japan. The product is a result of the collaboration between a Singaporean designer and a Japanese ceramic manufacturer in the Mino region.

“Cloud” is a white porcelain espresso cup and saucer inspired by the closeness of the clouds and skies over Singapore. It is designed by a Singaporean designer, Casey Chen and manufactured by Miyama, a Japanese ceramic company located in Gifu prefecture which is renowned for their Mino ware and under the direction of HULS.

Casey was inspired by dedication and attentiveness to details of the workers and the unique decoration technique of applying patterns on porcelain using Japanese paper which characterises Miyama’s specialty in the field of Japanese ceramic tableware.

“Cloud” cup and saucer is inspired by the clouds and skies over Singapore

The collaboration between Singapore and Japan, in the creative and craft industries had flourished in recent years. Singapore’s unique cultural diversity and Japan’s craft industries are both rooted in tradition and this combination became the source of the creation of the finished product. The blue detailing of the saucer symbolises both the sky as well as the Singapore Peranakan blue and the matte texture of bisque porcelain realises a quality feel of Miyama. With its egg-shaped base and cloud-shaped handle, “Cloud” exudes a fun coffee time with a free and relaxed mind. A cup holder for espresso machine is included in each package. This product will be released simultaneously in Singapore and Japan.

– Casting

The method of slip casting is used for the production of “Cloud”. Slip casting is a type of ceramic molding technique which uses plaster molds instead of using the potter’s wheel. By pouring slip into plaster molds and drying it until its hardened, this technique makes it possible to create thin and strong ceramic products.

– Risen Yaki

“Risen-yaki” is a decoration technique of applying patterns on porcelain using Japanese paper. Copper plates are used as original template for the paper. Japanese paper with patterns is first applied by the craftsperson by hand on the surface of white porcelain one by one and when the paper is removed the patterns will adhere to the porcelain creating beautiful patterns of lines and texture. The technique of “risen-yaki” adds a special touch to porcelain. In 1846, the technique of transfer printing by copper plates was used for the first time in Japan in Inazu-cho, Mizunami of Gifu prefecture where Miyama is located. To date, only a few potteries in this area are still using this technique to the present day.

Casey Chen (b.1971) is a Singaporean designer/ artist who excels in a figurative approach to his work. He had gained international recognition by winning a design award in New York City. “Cloud” is his first collaboration with Japanese craft manufacturers.

Miyama Co., Ltd. was established in 1977 in Mizunami area in Gifu prefecture where manufacturers of ceramic tableware for export are concentrated among production areas of Mino ware. The advanced technique that Miyama has developed over decades has enabled them to realized the complex form of “Cloud”.

About Peranakan color

The blue color used for the saucer of Cloud reflects a sense of Peranakan culture which is a part of Singapore’s multi-cultural heritage. Peranakan design has influences of Chinese, Malay and European sensibilities and the uniqueness of Peranakan style can still be observed in the pastel colored buildings, textile and embroidery around Singapore.
