Singapore’s Lee Hwa Jewellery Presents Two Nonya-inspired Jewellery Collections at George Town Festival 2011

SINGAPORE, June 28, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — Lee Hwa Jewellery, Singapore’s leading contemporary jeweller, is proud to be a part of the sophomore George Town Festival, commemorating the city as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Alongside 11 other international jewellers, Lee Hwa Jewellery has been invited to present two glitzy and exquisite collections – Ratu and Sang Putri – at the Festival’s opening event, ‘Peranakan Penang: The Gala Dinner’.

In line with the Gala theme and in keeping with the commemoration of Penang and its diverse culture and heritage, Lee Hwa has chosen to showcase works heavily influenced by the Peranakan culture – a fusion of Chinese and Malay artistry that is at once dramatic and elegant.

Reflecting the sense of aesthetics of both Malay and Chinese influences, the two collections sport elaborately-designed floral motif. The eye-catching Ratu – Malay for Queen – necklace personifies the characteristics of the quintessential Peranakan matriarch – strong and powerful, yet regal and majestic to behold. Comprising an artistic patchwork of finely-wrought white and rose gold flowers and liberally encrusted with round brilliant diamonds, Ratu makes a strong statement, exuding distinct grandeur and a mature style that reflects the sheer personality of the women for which it was crafted.

In contrast, the dainty Sang Putri collection stands out with its grace and elegance. Comprising a tasteful and intricate composition of radiant blooms in white gold with a sprinkle of glittering diamonds, the delicate and ornate floral motif features youthful girlish curves that bring out the essence of the beauty and vitality of a young Nonya – the Princess of the family. Sang Putri encompasses a necklace and a bracelet.

The two collections will be paired with a special collection of evening dresses by Malaysian-born and internationally acclaimed fashion designers – Zang Toi and Yeoh Lee – at the event.

“Lee Hwa Jewellery is pleased to be invited to support the ‘Peranakan Penang: The Gala Dinner’ at George Town Festival 2011. It marks the commemoration of the past and the celebration of a colourful era of tradition. We are glad to be part of this international show to highlight the splendour of the exceptional culture of the Straits-Chinese with our two Nonya-inspired collections, Ratu and Sang Putri. We hope that our modern interpretation of the Peranakan way of life through these two collections will enthral the audiences with the beauty of this vibrant culture, exclusive to our region,” said Ms Elaine Ng, Senior Brand Manager of Lee Hwa Jewellery.

Comprehensive Solutions Needed for More Effective Mega-Project Management in China, India and Rest of Asia

leave a comment »

2011-06-27 11:00

SINGAPORE, June 27, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — Asia’s most influential project managers seeking solutions to the never-ending complexity of mega-project management are meeting in Beijing on 19 and 20 September. The purpose is to brainstorm about how mega-projects are becoming the new norm for project construction in Asia’s biggest economies.

It requires 37 procedures, takes 336 days, and costs 579.23 % GNI per capita to build just a warehouse in China. In India, complex regulations at state and federal level are stalling projects at the very beginning. And when it comes to mega-projects, the situation only gets more complex. Yet Asia needs mega-projects to address their burgeoning energy and water crisis, and feed their growing economic ambitions.

In North China, the desertification of the Gobi Desert is drying up farmland in the north, and the rapid growth of mega-cities Tianjin and Beijing has already drained underground aquifers. China has already spent a whopping CNY115bn (US$17bn) in their ambitious South-to-North Water Diversion Project, and will spend more on this mega-project over the next decade, as construction enters its critical phase.

Over in India, a power crisis is looming. Recent reports showed that the government once again fell short of the target for ramping up generation capacity by 64%.  In April 2011, India unveiled 16, US$4.4 billion ultra mega power projects to meet their growing power needs, projects which are attracting significant interest from the power sector.

As mega-projects become the new normal for large scale construction projects in Asia, a key regional conference, meeting from 19-20 September 2011 in Beijing will see project management experts from Hatch, Arup, Flour and Worley Parsons address the key project management challenges associated with conceptualising, developing and executing mega-projects in the region.

The conference, IQPC’s Effective Project Management of Global Megaprojects, will also see seven key regulators from China, and the rest of Asia contributing their tips and pointers on formulating strong contracts and doing business under the different legislative environments present.

Within the complex judicial, political and business structures of Asia’s growing economies, effective management of mega construction projects have evolved to become a creative art form instead of practical science, where procedures and principles are being overtaken by manipulative methodologies and organisational excellence, allowing for chaotic miscalculations and burgeoning costs.

Asia’s most influential project managers seeking solutions to the never-ending complexity of mega-project management have already confirmed their participation for the Effective Project Management of Global Megaprojects conference. 2011-06-27 09:00

Research and publishing solution enables file attachments on the Web, automatic reference updates and PDF annotations

PHILADELPHIA and LONDON, June 27, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — Thomson Reuters today released a major upgrade to Thomson Reuters EndNote® for Windows, the bibliographic management and publishing solution used by millions of researchers, librarians and students worldwide. With EndNote X5 researchers can add and move file attachments between their computer and Web account, view and annotate PDFs, and update references automatically.

“EndNote X5 offers several new and improved product features to help users save valuable time managing their reference collections,” said Keith MacGregor, executive vice president, Thomson Reuters. “We are continually looking to improve the scholarly research and publishing experience for our customers, and the latest update adds key functionalities like the ability to update existing references with critical data needed for grant submissions.”

Add and Transfer File Attachments to the Web

EndNote X5 users can access file attachments and figures within their EndNote Web records. File attachments can be added directly to an EndNote Web record or transferred between a local library and the Web to see the same reference detail in both environments. EndNote X5 users will also receive increased Web storage for up to 25,000 references and 1GB for their file attachments.

View and Annotate PDF files within EndNote

A new PDF viewer joins the “Quick Edit” tab in EndNote X5, enabling users to review an attached PDF and edit a record in one place. The PDF viewer makes it easy to navigate between multiple attachments as well as annotate the file with highlights and comments. Users can search the entire PDF including comments and use many familiar options common to PDF viewing.

Update References Automatically

Existing references can now be updated easily with a new option that lets EndNote search online for more complete reference detail. When a match is found, EndNote highlights the differences in a side-by-side comparison of the new and existing reference. Users can decide whether to update the empty fields only, replace all the fields, or copy-and-paste specific information. While any field can be updated, the new feature saves time for existing references that now require article identifiers such as PMCID and NIHMSID numbers for grant submissions.

The latest version of EndNote also enables users to:

  • Use new conditional formatting in journal styles that substitutes data for empty fields automatically.
  • Review differences in duplicate records quickly with auto-highlights.
  • Select a new citation style-Author (Year)-in Microsoft® Word.

Aon Hewitt’s 2011 Asia Pacific Best Employers Study, conducted during this growth period from the end of 2010 through early 2011, provides unique insights into how well organizations are leveraging the opportunities and delivering on the challenges regarding their human capital practices.”

The study notes that there is no single formula for becoming a Best Employer. The organizations identified as Best Employers possess vastly different business models, business strategies, work cultures, and human capital programs. However, in the 2011 study, it was clear that the ‘Best’ differentiated themselves versus the ‘Rest’ in their ability to answer five critical questions that employees are asking of their organizations.

Are we all aligned on the people investments needed to achieve our goals?
Is there a compelling reason for me to work here?
Will I be effectively developed and fairly rewarded for extra effort?
Do I receive timely and quality support?
Am I trusted and encouraged to take ownership?
Edouard Merette, Chief Executive, Aon Hewitt Consulting, APAC, said, “The Aon Hewitt Best Employers study completes a decade in the Asia Pacific Region. Over these years we have witnessed a rising interest among regional organizations in becoming a Best Employer. It is a sign of the region’s economic status and global aspirations of regional organizations.

The Best Employers study proves that the decision to take the journey of becoming a Best Employer is a strategic decision for progressive organizations. The data, insights and best practices from the Study show us how the Best are ensuring their human capital systems are geared towards achieving the best business results for growth economies.”

The judges for the regional Asia Pacific Best Employers were:

SINGAPORE, June 24, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — Pioneering online insurer DirectAsia.com is celebrating its first birthday!

Since launching just 12 months ago, the innovative company has fast established itself as Singapore’s chief road safety champion. This has been achieved thanks to its offer of a best price guarantee on car insurance for safe drivers.

Now DirectAsia.com is coinciding its birthday celebrations with the launch of its latest road safety videos featuring Singapore star Adrian Pang and his family.

The videos address the disturbing and increasing trend in bad driving including not wearing seat belts, using hand phones and drink driving.

Anthony Hobrow, Chairman of DirectAsia.com, said: “We all know and witness these bad driving habits everyday. Yet we do nothing about it. That’s why we want to bring a human face to road safety. We’re delighted to have teamed up with Adrian and his family to help put the spotlight on this serious issue.”

Adrian Pang appears in the videos with his two children Xander and Zachary whilst his wife Tracie Pang directs. Adrian Pang said: “The issue of safety on our roads raises so many questions. For instance why do I see mum and dad buckled up in the car but the kids are not wearing their seat-belts? It doesn’t make sense, so why is this happening? I hope these videos can make a difference and help avoid the loss of so many lives.”

This is not the first time that DirectAsia.com and Adrian Pang have teamed up. As a major supporter of the Singapore arts’ scene, DirectAsia.com sponsored two PANGDEMONIUM! Productions, Closer and the upcoming Dealer’s Choice.

DHL Invests Euro100 Million in Asia Pacific Air Network Enhancements

Adds three 100-tonne payload B747-400 BCFs to the air network on three high capacity routes
Continued investment in Asia Pacific demonstrates commitment and growth potential
TOKYO, June 22, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, today announced an investment of euro100 million with three Boeing 747-400 Converted Freighters (BCFs) added to its Asia Air Network. Operated by Air Hong Kong, a joint venture between Cathay Pacific and DHL, the three B747-400 BCFs with a payload of 100 tonnes each will service three high capacity routes six days a week: Tokyo-Hong Kong, Singapore-Hong Kong, and Shanghai-Hong Kong.

Currently, two A300-600 General Freighters (GFs) each with a 45-tonne payload, ply direct routes between Tokyo-Hong Kong and Shanghai-Hong Kong. By September 2011, these two A300-600GFs will be redeployed to service five weekly services between Beijing-Hong Kong and Manila-Hong Kong, replacing two 24-tonne B727-200Fs planes which will be retired.

“The euro100-million investment in three B747-400 BCFs — the biggest freighter aircraft in service — increases our capacity, connectivity and service reliability. It is a significant step up for DHL’s Asia Air Network — one we’re confident of because we have a clear, market-driven approach to our business,” said the recently appointed CEO of DHL Express Asia Pacific, Jerry Hsu. “By being close to our customers — understanding what they need, recognizing the opportunities and being prepared to make strategic investments — that’s how we’ll continue to grow our market share and deliver best-in-class services for our industry.”

Continuing the Investment in Asia Pacific

The investment in the Air Network comes on the back of the company’s recent announcement of an additional daily intercontinental route from Hong Kong to Cincinnati, as a direct response to increasing demands for services from South China and Hong Kong to North America. Through this, customers will enjoy a later pickup time out of Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta, and overnight service to North America.

The company is also on track to open its USD175 million (euro120 million) North Asia Hub in early 2012. Situated at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport, the 57,000 sqm hub will be built on a total land area of 88,000 sqm, equipped with leading-edge automated sorting systems.

In May this year, the company also launched a new global marketing campaign highlighting DHL’s international expertise and capabilities to meet the express shipping needs of all industries.

“We continue to see significant potential in Asia Pacific. We have been operating in the region for over 40 years, having pioneered the international Express industry across many cities. With significant infrastructural assets and our continued investment, we constantly raise the bar to become the provider of choice to our customers,” said Mr. Hsu.

PRNewswire-Asia/ — Forget boring flashcards. EF Education First, the world’s largest international education company, recently released the iPad app, EF High Flyers English Vocabulary Game for kids. The EF app for kids updates the oldest studying tool, the flashcard, with rich 3D content and game mechanics to engage young learners through the magical experience of the iPad. Already, it has reached the #1 spot in Apple’s education section of the App Store in more than 50 countries.

In a recent PBS survey, 70 percent of parents allowed their children to use their iPad and had, on average, 8 apps for their children. The most important criteria for those apps? “Educational value.” With over 500 flashcards, crystal clear audio, an intelligent learning system, and progress tracking popular with parents, the EF High Flyer app is built to complement EF’s English curriculum for students under 10 years old.

“When we looked at both our philosophy of ‘learn anytime, anywhere’ and the iPad’s unique appeal to children, we knew that creating an iPad app was a great opportunity to extend classroom learning,” says Jacob Toren, President of EF English First.

The app is the latest of EF’s fast-growing family of mobile apps, ranging from language learning apps, like the iPad app for EF Englishtown( http://www.englishtown.com ) – the world’s largest online English school – to social networking apps for EF students.
