Speed Record – Dani Arnold Breaks Record on the North Face of the Matterhorn

SEON, Switzerland, May 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — To mark the start of the season on the Matterhorn, top class alpinist Dani Arnold, from Switzerland, has set a new milestone: on April 22nd the speed specialist from the Mammut Pro Team climbed the Schmid route on the Matterhorn North face in 1 hour and 46 minutes. With this he beats the previous record set by Ueli Steck in 2009 by 10 minutes.

The 1,100 metre high North face of the Matterhorn is, with the Eiger and Grand Jorasse, one of the three great North faces of the Alps. Good mountain climbers need between 8 and 10 hours for this wall of rock and ice. Dani Arnold achieved the ascent in just one hour and 46 minutes! He climbed the original route of the Matterhorn North face (Schmid route) alone.


At precisely 8:34 a.m. Dani Arnold set off at the Bergschrund at 3,400 metres above sea level. The conditions were “actually really good, even if not optimal. In many places I was climbing on glare ice, and on rock further up. This is where you would ideally find snow,” said the climber from Uri, Switzerland. The Swiss mountain guide is known for his speed at climbing mountains. Even on difficult terrain, Dani Arnold climbs apparently without effort. When he set the speed record for the Eiger North face in 2011, which is still unbroken today, hardly anyone outside the climbing scene had heard of him.

CHICAGO, Oct. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ —  Beginning on Oct. 12, the day of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, through Dec. 7, three global brands are coming together to “TURN YOUR MILES (RED)” – harnessing the power of community to support the fight against HIV/AIDS.

TURN YOUR MILES (RED) is an eight-week campaign that empowers walkers, runners and fitness enthusiasts worldwide to make a collective contribution that will save lives and effect change. For each Nike+ Running mile pledged to (RED) on, Bank of America will donate 40 cents – up to $1 million – toward the fight to eradicate mother-to-child HIV transmission. Nike+ Running is a free app which allows people to track, measure, share and compare their movements with a global community of athletes.

TURN YOUR MILES (RED) deepens the partnership between Bank of America and (RED). Earlier this year, the bank announced a $10 million investment toward delivering the first AIDS-free generation in over 30 years.

“Public and private partnerships are essential to solving our most significant challenges, particularly when it comes to global health,” said Anne Finucane, global chief strategy and marketing officer at Bank of America. “By bringing Nike’s influence and resources into the fold, we’re building on our progress toward a very reachable goal.”

Today, it costs as little as 40 cents for two lifesaving pills called antiretrovirals (ARVS) which, when taken daily, can prevent an HIV-positive pregnant woman from passing the virus to her unborn baby. Still, 650 babies are needlessly born with HIV every day. TURN YOUR MILES (RED) is an initiative designed to enable people at every fitness level to play a part in delivering up to $1 million to HIV medical clinics and programs in sub-Saharan Africa. That amounts to 2.5 million days of lifesaving ARVS.
