Marsh: Industrial Assets Underinsured by up to 60% in Asia

Companies Failing to Consider Rising Commodity, Materials and Labour Costs

SINGAPORE, March 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — Telecommunications, energy and petrochemical companies are underinsuring their industrial assets between 30 percent and 60 percent in Asia, according to a new report published by Marsh, a global leader in insurance broking and risk management, and John Foord, a leading industrial asset valuation firm in Asia.

According to the report, many companies are not taking into account recent fluctuations in commodity prices, material and labour costs and, consequently, are underinsuring the full replacement value of their assets. In addition, companies may also be relying on outdated asset registers which apply simple inflation indices that often do not accurately reflect true asset values.

Jason Wells, Managing Director and Leader of Specialty Practices for Marsh in Asia, said: “In our experience, the extent of underinsurance in Asia is more widespread than in more developed regions. Last year’s devastating floods in Thailand were a stark reminder of how serious the problem has become.

“Firms often only become aware when they make a claim and discover the sum insured does not cover the replacement cost. We urge companies to perform regular asset valuation ‘health checks’ — at least once every two to three years — so that the sums insured can be both accurate and adequate.”

Graham Copland, Managing Director of John Foord, said: “We reviewed nearly 100 asset valuations performed in the telecommunication, energy and petrochemical sectors, and compared the true replacement value with the sum insured. The findings speak for themselves, with an average of 30% underinsurance, with several instances of up to 60%.”

With a myriad of infrastructure projects already underway and more in the pipeline, the economic viability of many of the businesses involved may be at risk due to inadequate levels of insurance. Many businesses are unaware that their insurance is not adequate to cover the true cost of replacement of assets.

At the technological forefront: automation, modelling and sensory evaluation

To support the innovation flow, ambitious and effective tools allow researchers to explore more broadly the endless possibilities offered by the science of formulation and evaluation. For example, robots mimic product applications on hair or prepare time-saving formulae. FMC China 2012 with Enlarged Space and Improved Services

SHANGHAI, March 28, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — “Furniture Manufacturing & Supply China 2012” (FMC China 2012), “FMC Premium 2012” and the first ever “Furniture Fabric China 2012” will be staged at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center (SWEECC) from 11 to 14 September, concurrently with “Furniture China 2012” at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC).

In 2011, the FMC exhibition was staged at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center (SWEECC) for the first time and was a great success. FMC attracted nearly 745 domestic and overseas exhibitors from 40 countries and regions, and 30,327 trade buyers from 30 provinces and 111 countries and regions. 4,521 overseas visitors came to China for the FMC exhibition, which was an increase of 12% compared to the previous year. The quantity and quality of visitors has improved significantly.

FMC China 2012 will use 4 Halls of SWEECC. Cabinet & Wardrobe Fittings/Furniture Lightings will be added as a new exhibit category. The total exhibition area will be 71,000 sqm and FMC China 2012 is expected to attract 850 exhibitors and 35,000 trade buyers.

The category of FMC China 2012 is more professional. Four halls are located on three floors of SWEECC.

In 2012, the service will be improved. For example, the shuttle bus between the two exhibition sites will depart every five minutes. The dining area at FMC China 2012 will be enlarged to hold more people. Route guidance will be arranged at Exit 1 / 4 of Metro Line 7 / 8 at Yaohua Road Station. As people become more familiar with the new exhibition hall, and the organizer makes the concerns of visitors and services top priorities, it is believed that FMC China will become a truly successful, independent and export-oriented platform.
