-Morrissey to perform exclusively for Australian audiences during Vivid Sydney as part of Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House on Tuesday May 26, Wednesday May 27, Saturday May 30 and Sunday May 31, 2015
-“There can’t be many musicians that have a following as loyal as Morrissey, a leader for all who are lost, angry and disenchanted; a poetic voice for those unable to articulate their discontent. ” — The Independent UK

SYDNEY /PRNewswire/ — Destination NSW and the Sydney Opera House today announced British popular music visionary Morrissey will perform four exclusive performances at Vivid LIVE during VividSydney, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest festival of light, music and ideas.

Photo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20150224/177358

“An Evening With Morrissey” will take place at the Sydney Opera House on 26-27 May and 30-31 May and will be the artist’s only Australian appearances.

Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said, “Vivid LIVE is set to wow audiences once again with the announcement of influential indie musician, Morrissey as the first artist on this year’s program. As one of music’s most enduring figures, Morrissey is set to captivate audiences in his Sydney-exclusive performances during Vivid Sydney.”

Vivid Sydney, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest festival of light, music and ideas, is owned and managed by the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW. Vivid LIVE at the Sydney Opera Houseforms part of the Vivid Music program and is a celebration of ambitious popular music, running from 22 May-8 June, the first time the program has run for the duration of Vivid Sydney. Vivid LIVE is the highlight of SydneyOpera House‘s year-round contemporary music programming.

Morrissey is one of popular music’s most singular and iconic figures. Variously described as an irrefutably bleak or gloriously funny songwriter, Morrissey‘s romantic narratives immortalise the post-industrial recession of ’80s era Manchester through to the current day. The crooning legend continues to create art across multiple mediums to the delight of his devoted fans, from the instant Penguin Classic Autobiography to his critically acclaimed 10thalbum World Peace Is None of Your Business.

With high demand expected for this Sydney-exclusive performance, tickets will be allocated through a ballot (details below).

Now in its seventh year, Vivid LIVE will be overseen by Ben Marshall, the Opera House’s Head of Contemporary Music and recently appointed as the Curator for Vivid LIVE. Ben has brought the likes of The National, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and Flying Lotus to the Opera House Concert Hall stage.

Ben Marshall, Vivid LIVE Curator at Sydney Opera House said “I am honoured to be taking on this role afterFergus Linehan’s sensational run and cannot wait to release the full program. Vivid LIVE as part of Vivid Sydney is a wonderful opportunity to transform the Opera House inside and out — it’s the only time contemporary music is able to take over the whole House.

“I’m thrilled that the first announcement for Vivid LIVE 2015 is a Sydney-only residency by the uniquely gifted and inimitably stylish Morrissey. I have vivid teenage memories of his face all over our lever-arch files in high school. So it’s amazing to now showcase his artistry on the Concert Hall stage. These four vital, intimate concerts will be a very special occasion for all those like-minded souls who’ve been affected by Morrissey. But get in early, as these concerts will sell out.”

The full program for Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House is expected to be announced during the Vivid Sydney program launch next month. vividsydney.com / sydneyoperahouse.com/vividLIVE

NOTES TO EDITORS:

BEN MARSHALL

With a career spanning almost 20 years in the Australian independent music scene, Ben Marshall cut his teeth as a solicitor by day and electronic music promoter by night, throwing himself into what is now considered a classic period of drum ‘n’ bass. At 27, he shed the legal path and moved to independent music company Inertia where he set-up and ran Civil Society (now Handsome Tours), beginning his close relationship with The National and bringing the likes of Grizzly Bear and The xx  to Australia for the first time.

Currently responsible for the Opera House’s contemporary music programming, the Opera House’s year-round contemporary music program, and co-curating Graphic Festival, recent years have seen seminal Australian acts Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Dead Can Dance and The Dirty Three make their long-overdue debuts at the Opera House, while genre-defining artists such as Bonnie Prince Billy, Violent Femmes, Yo La Tengo and future-facing electronic artists James BlakeFlying Lotus and Caribou have transformed one of the world’s most iconic stages with their unforgettable performances under the Sydney Opera House sails.

Warren Ellis (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Dirty Three, Grinderman) said, “Two of the great thrills of my performing career have been playing at the Sydney Opera House, quite possibly my favourite building in the whole world. This has been solely due to the tireless campaigning of Ben Marshall. Since his instalment as Head of Contemporary Music, Ben Marshall has managed to open the doors to groups like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Dirty Three and many others, in attempt to honour the artistic beats in contemporary music, as is de rigueur in the equivalent European and American concert halls.

“The building was built to reflect the cultural aspirations of its society and it’s essential that the programming reflect the lifeblood of contemporary music rather than the traditional arts centre presentations. What an amazing gift for the performers and audience alike.

“How fabulous and encouraging for us all that Ben is now the new curator of Vivid LIVE.”

Bryce Dessner from The National said, “It’s been a huge honour to work for several years and in various ways with my friend and colleague Ben Marshall of the Sydney Opera House and now as Curator of Vivid Live. Some of my most memorable concert experiences of the past ten years ever have been organized by Ben, including our first ever trip to Australia with The National and then our recent return to headline two nights on the steps in front of the Opera House.  Ben is a huge supporter of creative music in the world and I am confident his leadership will be a tremendous asset to the continued success of the Vivid Live festival.”

Flying Lotus aka Steven Ellison said, Ben Marshall recognised the potential of our show in a venue that wouldn’t normally invite an artists like myself and the result was better than we could have imagined. “I’ve always loved the magic in art and music and try to figure out how to make every show fresh and original — the space you’re playing always makes a difference, sometimes on a subtle level but in certain spaces it can have a huge influence on the event, playing the Opera House was like that for me, we already had a great show but it just came to life inside that space.”

Epsilon Study Finds Chinese Consumers Most Loyal to e-Commerce Players

leave a comment »

SHANGHAI, Feb. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Epsilon, the global leader in creating connections between people and brands, completed its study on the habits of Chinese consumers. The report revealed that 61% of Chinese study respondents are loyal to e-commerce players like Taobao, JD and Tmall, the highest across all sectors surveyed.

While this year’s results were consistent with many of the key trends cited in Epsilon’s past China loyalty studies — vibrant Chinese consumer spending despite overall economic slowdown and higher trust in foreign brands over local brands, the rising allegiance of consumers to e-commerce players observed in this year’s study indicates that brands across dozens of sectors selling products online will need to carefully consider how to position their products in the online marketplace to secure and defend the loyalty of Chinese consumers.

With $540 billion spent in China’s online shops in 2014, e-commerce is by now so ubiquitous that Chinese online platforms have successfully inserted themselves as a formidable layer between consumers and product brands. They have restructured the value chain, sending consumer brands scrambling to create a sustainable competitive advantage in an increasingly dynamic marketplace. By capturing targeted awareness through data insights and by standing at the forefront of online customer service, e-commerce platforms are fortifying their position for years to come.

Survey respondents said they are happy to engage with e-commerce players across channels, more so than with any other sector. 35% of respondents who have purchased online stated they are open to receiving promotions from e-commerce brands by e-mail, 34% by WeChat and 27% by Weibo. Respondents were also more open to receiving information from e-commerce brands via mobile apps, QQ, video sites and product review sites than any from any other sector.

“The migration of consumer commerce to the digital realm is unfolding at lightning speed in China, disrupting marketing strategies for players across the marketplace,” said Dominic Powers, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, International, Epsilon. “A new paradigm is emerging whereby retailers need to simultaneously build brand equity while striking the right partnerships and positioning with e-commerce players.”

Epsilon’s research report uncovered several other China loyalty trends:

Those companies most adept at integrating online and offline touch points to deliver a seamless customer service experience are now commanding the loyalty of Chinese consumers. Apple received the highest score for loyalty of any brand cited, registering 17% of brands respondents and cited across all categories. Lifestyle brands directly impacting consumer health, including grocery chains and restaurants, and financial services, also received high loyalty scores.
Now that the vast majority of Chinese digital users have migrated from micro-blog Weibo to the more private, group-based social media platform WeChat, Chinese consumers are openly welcoming social media-based loyalty communications with their preferred brands like never before. 26% of survey respondents said they prefer to interact with brands via WeChat, with email and mobile messaging falling in popularity.
Especially in China, the return on loyalty investment is high. Loyal customers are increasingly standing by their brands through wavering market conditions, providing a bulwark to fend off competition. The Epsilon survey showed that loyalists across sectors were 19% more likely to visit their preferred brands more often and spend more on their favorite brands. Loyalists were more generous with their private information and more likely to refer products and services to friends.
Epsilon conducts quantitative research annually across mainland China to gain fresh insights on Chinese consumers’ spending attitudes and behaviors, their views towards money, the economic outlook and the impact of information sources such as Word of Mouth (WOM) on their purchase decisions. This year’s study included 1,000 respondents weighted to the age and gender distributions of the population. The study sought to explore Chinese consumers’ definitions of brand loyalty and their loyalty motivations. The behaviors of loyalists and non-loyalists were compared within and across product sectors. Additionally, for the first time, consumers were asked to name the brands they are most loyal to, providing a glimpse of Chinese consumers’ favorite brands.

Microchip Announces Microcontroller Family Providing Multiple Independent, Closed Loop Power Channels and System Management

leave a comment »

-New MCUs feature flexible interconnections of advanced analog and digital integration increasing system capabilities while simplifying design

BANGKOK /PRNewswire/ — [NASDAQ: MCHP]  Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions, has announced from the Embedded World conference in Germany a new family of 8-bit PIC® Microcontrollers (MCUs) with the PIC16(L)F1769 family. This family is the first PIC MCU to offer up to two independent closed loop channels. This is achieved with the addition of the Programmable Ramp Generator (PRG), which automates slope and ramp compensation, increases stability and efficiencies in hybrid power conversion applications. The PRG provides real-time, down to the nanosecond, responses to a system change, without CPU interaction for multiple independent power channels. This allows customers the ability to reduce latency and component counts while improving system efficiency.

View a brief presentation: http://www.microchip.com/PIC16L_F1769-Press-Presentation-022415a

The PIC16(L)F1769 family includes intelligent analog and digital peripherals, including tri-state op amps, 10-bit Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs), 5- & 10-bit Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs), 10- and 16-bit PWMs, and high-speed comparators, along with two 100 mA high current I/Os. The combination of these integrated peripherals help support the demands of multiple independent closed-loop power channels and system management, while providing an 8-bit platform that simplifies design, enables higher efficiency and increases performance while helping eliminate many discrete components in power-conversion systems.

In addition to power-conversion peripherals, these PIC MCUs have a unique hardware-based LED dimming control function enabled by the interconnections of the Data Signal Modulator (DSM), op amp and 16-bit PWM. The combination of these peripherals creates a LED-dimming engine synchronising switching control eliminating LED current overshoot and decay. The synchronisation of the output switching helps smooth dimming, minimises color shifting, increases LED life and reduces heat. This family also includes Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) such as the Configurable Logic Cell (CLC), Complementary Output Generator (COG) and Zero Cross Detect (ZCD). These CIPs take 8-bit PIC MCU performance to a new level, as they are designed to handle tasks with no code or supervision from the CPU to maintain operation, after initial configuration. As a result, they simplify the implementation of complex control systems and give designers the flexibility to innovate. The CLC peripheral allows designers to create custom logic and interconnections specific to their application, reducing interrupt latency, saving code space and adding functionality. The COG peripheral is a powerful waveform generator that can generate complementary waveforms with fine control of key parameters, such as phase, dead-band, blanking, emergency shut-down states and error-recovery strategies. It provides a cost-effective solution, saving both board space and component cost. The ZCD senses when high voltage AC signal crosses through ground, ideal for TRIAC control functions.

These new 8-bit PIC MCUs provide the capability for multiple independent, closed loop power channels and system management making these products appealing to various power supply, battery management, LED lighting, exterior/interior automotive lighting and general-purpose applications. Along with all these features, the family offers EUSART, I2C™/ SPI and eXtreme Low Power (XLP) Technology, which are all offered in small form-factor packages, ranging from 14- to 20-pin packages.

“The real power of the PIC16F1769 family is the ability to interconnect these on-chip peripherals to create custom functions specific to your application,” said Steve Drehobl, vice president of Microchip’s MCU8 Division. “This paired with the ability to simultaneously control independent closed loop channels brings a level of capability not traditionally found on low cost 8-bit PIC MCUs.”

Development support

The PIC16(L)F1769 family is supported by Microchip’s standard suite of world-class development tools, including the MPLAB® ICD 3 (part # DV164035) and PICkit™ 3 (part # PG164130) and MPLAB Code Configurator, which is a plug-in for Microchip’s free MPLAB X Integrated Environment (IDE) provides a graphical method to configure 8-bit systems and peripheral features, and gets you from concept to prototype in minutes by automatically generating efficient and easily modified C code for your application.

Availability

The PIC(L)F1764, PIC(L)F1765, PIC16(L)F1768 and PIC(L)F1769 are available now for sampling in 14- and 20-pins in PDIP, SOIC, SSOP, TSSOP, and QFN packages, and volume production is expected in March.

Speaking at Takeda’s Inauguration Ceremony today, Dr. Beh Swan Gin, Chairman of the Singapore Economic Development Board, said, “EDB welcomes Takeda’s decision to make Singapore its Emerging Markets Business Unit headquarters.  Singapore has become the preferred location for international companies to locate their regional headquarters in Asia and South East Asia by harnessing our connectivity to the markets around us and our attractive work-live-play-learn environment. But we are not resting on our laurels as we are actively expanding the network and sophistication of professional services firms that support senior decision makers in these regional headquarters.”

Takeda has maintained a presence in Asia-Pacific for more than 50 years, and entered Singapore in 2008. Operations in the region include 1,700 staff in 10 countries. Expansion in Asia is a core component of Takeda’s long-term growth strategies, helping the company to emerge as a top 10 pharmaceutical player in Asia-Pacific.

The new office will house the Takeda Emerging Markets Business Unit, including Asia-Pacific, as well as the Takeda Vaccine Business Unit and the regional Research and Development Center.

“Our patients are the core of what we do at Takeda. Our new space in Singapore will allow us to more quickly address evolving market needs throughout the rapidly growing Emerging Markets, including Asia-Pacific,” saidGiles Platford, President, Emerging Markets Business Unit. “It gives us close-to-door access to important market information that will help accelerate the development of medicines needed for battling regional and global health issues.”

Takeda’s decision to relocate the central hub of its Emerging Markets Business Unit demonstrates its dedication to propel the momentum of the Emerging Markets business and the importance of the Asia-Pacific region as a pillar of Takeda’s long-term growth strategy.

The Vaccine Business Unit based in Singapore hosts a laboratory for analytics and development of vaccines to protect against important infectious diseases in the region. One vaccine targets dengue fever and will soon enter phase 3 clinical trials.

Takeda’s Development function is responsible for clinical studies across 12 countries in Asia, supporting clinical activities for compounds in Takeda’s key therapeutic areas.

Asia is a dynamic continent with four billion people across dozens of countries. Bullet Trains in Japan: the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Start Service on March 14

leave a comment »

TOKYO, Feb. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — A new addition to Japan’s bullet train network, the Hokuriku Shinkansen, will start service on March. The new line will significantly reduce travel times between Tokyo, Toyama and Kanazawa. Taking the Shinkansen to one of many viewing destinations assures cherry blossom fans will not miss out the short period during which the trees are in bloom.

The Miharu Takizakura in Fukushima Prefecture is over 1,000 years old, and is one of the three giant cherry trees of Japan.
The Miharu Takizakura in Fukushima Prefecture is over 1,000 years old, and is one of the three giant cherry trees of Japan.
Spring is the season for seeing Japan at its best. Starting from late March every year, enthusiasts gather in Tokyo, Osaka and many of Japan’s other cities for the cherry blossoms. However, the very short bloom time, means that a number of overseas visitors often miss out.

East Japan Railway Company will take part in the Thai International Travel Fair held in Thailand between February 25 and March 1 where the railway agency will give a presentation on the best travel routes for reaching the cherry blossoms while they are in bloom.

Mid-April – Hokuriku Shinkansen

According to information provided by East Japan Railway Company, the Hokuriku Shinkansen departs from Tokyo and travels northward, with stops in Nagano, Toyama and Kanazawa – the best spots for viewing cherry blossoms.

A one and a half hour ride from Tokyo delivers passengers to Niigata Prefecture’s Joetsumyoko Station where Takada Castle, one of the three best locations in Japan for nighttime cherry blossoms viewing, is located. The locale assures an amazing viewing experience, with over 4,000 cherry trees illuminated by countless paper lanterns aligning the roads. CNNGo, CNN’s travel site, lists Takada Castle as one of the five best blooming great flower festivals in the world. Traditional Japanese food and local food specialties sold from 300 outdoor stalls at the event during the festival assure each spectator an unforgettable time.

In addition, if you would like to visit the famous Zenko-ji Temple, get off at Nagano Station along the Hokuriku Shinkansen, and spend one night in Nagano Prefecture. The Hotel Metropolitan Nagano adjacent to Nagano Station is convenient and good value for the price.

From mid- to late April – Tohoku Shinkansen

From mid- to late April, visit the ancient Miharu Takizakura cherry tree by taking the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Koriyama Station in Fukushima Prefecture. The over 1,000 year old tree stands 13.5 meters high, with a trunk diameter of 20 meters. One of the three giant cherry trees of Japan, its light pink flowers spread in all directions from the branches, giving the appearance of a waterfall.

After late April – Akita Shinkansen

Visitors still can see blooming cherry blossoms in Japan after late April. Take the Akita Shinkansen from Tokyo directly to Kakunodate in Akita Prefecture. Kakunodate is known as “the little Kyoto of Michinoku”, and attracts millions of visitors during cherry blossom season. Spend one night at Folkloro kakunodate, adjacent to Kakunodate Station, and feel refreshed for the entire day by enjoying a breakfast of Akitakomachi, a variety of rice that is a local specialty.

Cherry blossom viewing is not limited to Tokyo and late March. Various Shinkansen trains heading north from Tokyo provide a wide range of options for seeing cherry blossoms from mid-March to the end of April.

Violin Memory Announces Flash Storage Platform, Industry’s First All-Flash Based Primary Storage System

leave a comment »

-Solutions built on Concerto OS 7 with inline de-duplication engine deliver all-flash storage system at a cost lower than disk
SINGAPORE, Feb. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Violin Memory®, Inc., (NYSE: VMEM) a leading provider and pioneer of award-winning all-flash storage arrays, announced worldwide availability of the Flash Storage Platform™ (FSP), including the new 7300 and 7700 all flash arrays, Concerto™ OS 7, and Symphony™ 3 simple management control. The Flash Storage Platform is the first all-flash storage system designed to run all primary storage and active workloads below the cost of traditional disk. The Flash Storage Platform achieves the ultimate consolidation and simplification of next generation data centre workloads by delivering the highest performance storage at the lowest Capex and Opex possible today.

“The Flash Storage Platform is a game changer for our customers and the industry as it creates the tipping point for enterprises to capture the promise of flash for all primary storage workloads, and to migrate and refresh disk storage to all-flash cost effectively. At the same time, customers gain 10X performance improvements for most applications. These performance improvements deliver efficiencies that can completely change the competitive dynamics of most industries by removing the latency and bottlenecks created in the data center by legacy disk,” said Kevin DeNuccio, CEO at Violin Memory.

“The Flash Storage Platform delivers the performance of flash, and enterprise-grade data services, including user selectable block-level, inline de-duplication and compression at end-user costs that compete with traditional disk array prices on a single, simple, powerful platform,” DeNuccio concluded.

At the heart of this engineering achievement is Concerto OS 7. It combines Violin’s system-level flash management and control, block-level de-duplication and compression data efficiency engine, and one of the broadest sets of data management, protection, and recovery services, into a single, integrated operating system. All the power of Concerto OS 7 is managed by the user through Symphony 3, delivering the ultimate flexibility and granular control on a per workload, application or LUN level of all features with the most elegant, and simple, single pane of glass storage management solution in the industry.

“The explosive growth of data has had a significant impact on how organisations in Australia store and manage data. In a fast-paced environment, everyone demands data fast, in real-time without any downtime. For the first time, customers here no longer need complex solutions with multiple components running different software environments and fragmented feature sets. With Concerto OS 7 as the foundation for the Flash Storage Platform, data protection, data reduction, performance, and scalability for the vast majority of primary storage needs are met in a single enclosure running a single operating system managed through a single pane of glass,” said Ross Lynch, Violin’s Director for ANZ.

The 7300 and 7700 Flash Storage Platform designs reduce the effective cost-per-gigabyte by more than 75 percent over Violin’s prior generation of arrays, and are more than 25 percent lower in cost-per-gigabyte than the competition. For large deployments the system delivers all-flash storage for as low as $1.50 effective cost-per-gigabyte, making it possible for the first time, to upgrade all primary storage to all-flash, opening up the roughly $15B primary storage market to all-flash based solutions.

The Flash Storage Platform’s fourth generation Flash Fabric Architecture™ (FFA) sets new and unprecedented levels of performance, scale and density. The capacity of the 7300 FSP is 217TB effective in a three rack unit space, while the Violin 7700 FSP six-shelf configuration exceeds 1.3 petabytes effective, delivering an industry-record scale and density of 2.2 petabytes effective in a rack. Each shelf or array delivers sustained performance that can achieve 1 million IOPS at sub-millisecond latencies.

APAC:

“We are excited to enhance our Toshiba Total Storage Platform portfolio with Violin Memory’s new 7300/7300E Flash Storage Platforms series, which utilize Toshiba’s state-of-the-art NAND technology, and augment its comprehensive data service capabilities with the sophisticated inline deduplication and compression functions. We will continue to strengthen our relationship with Violin Memory to deliver flash memory solution to the market.”

Koichi Kagawa, General Manager

“While the adoption of all flash arrays is widely apparent to enterprise users, they remain concerned about the stability of software for services like data protection and data migration tacked onto these systems. Because data service and protection software is embedded at the kernel level, the Violin Flash Storage Platform eliminates this concern, ensuring end users an easy upgrade path and simplified management.”
