GSA 2015 is Asia’s first security conference on ISIS

leave a comment »

-Event aims to address various dimensions of the ISIS threat in the region including biological threats

SINGAPORE  /PRNewswire/ — Key military and security delegates from around the world will gather to attend Asia’s first ISIS-focused homeland security and counter-terrorism Conference and Exhibition, Global Security Asia (GSA) 2015, held at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre from 3 to 5 March 2015.

“ISIS presents a credible and wide-reaching threat to global security, not just in the Middle East. ISIS ability to radicalise and militarise individuals anywhere in the world is growing. We want to assess the impact of the ISIS threat in Asia, including from chemical, biological and radiological attacks.” Said Conference Chair Dr. Rohan Gunaratna, Professor of Security Studies at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies & Head of the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research at Nanyang Technological University inSingapore.

Now in its 10th year, GSA 2015, now organised in partnership with MILIPOL, is behind Asia’s first ISIS-themed 2-day conference “The New Asian Threat Landscape”. The conference portion of the event will span 4 and 5 March, and will delineate the current and emerging Asian threat from ISIS and discuss state and societal responses. The rise of ISIS and the declaration of an Islamic State has presented a new global and Asian threat landscape, and the ongoing spread of ISIS ideology in Asia through well-planned use of technology and communications channels, including the Internet, means that the operational threat to the region has changed dramatically. The threat to Asia is no longer primarily from the resurgence of al Qaeda and its host Taliban in thePakistanAfghanistan theatre but the growing appeal of ISIS.

Conference Chair Dr. Rohan Gunaratna will open the conference with a keynote address and will lead into various focused series of talks over the two days such as Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) threats by Dr Chua Teck Mean, Group CEO of Gaia One International Pte Ltd, Lt. Gen. (Dr) J R Bhardwaj, former Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Services of India and Dr David Trudil, A Smallpox and Anthrax specialist and President of NHDetect (USA). There will also be sessions on ISIS’ online and social media activities by Remy Mahzam, Associate Research Fellow, International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research and Nur Azlin Mohamed Yasin, Counter Terrorism Analyst at RSIS. Other speakers also include Major General Dr Tito Karnavian, Former Commander, Counter Terrorism Force, Indonesia and leading security and counter-terrorism practitioners and academics from the US, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia,Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore will map the evolving threat and share governmental and community strategies to contain and mitigate the ever evolving threats.

Topics of interest include:

  • The Threat of Bio Terrorism
  • A Strategic Ideological Response to Islamic State
  • Intelligence Collection Before Operation, The Warning Signs of Terrorist Attack’s
  • ISIS Social Media
  • The Terrorist-Criminal Nexus in Cyberspace

“This year’s ISIS-themed conference is a regional first and is of crucial importance to all local and regional government and private security forces,” said Andrew Marriott, Managing Director of GSA Exhibitions Pte Ltd, the exhibition and conference organiser. The *New Asian Threat Landscape* Conference allows us to examine the emerging ISIS threats and its influence in the region. This is undoubtedly a unique opportunity for all delegates to update themselves on the progress and threat from Islamic State which is currently destabilising huge swathes of the world and needs to be effectively contained in the local and regional context.”

In tandem with the conference is a public three-day exhibition opening on the 3rd March that presents opportunities for governments and security professionals to meet and interact with international manufacturers and resellers of security equipment, services and technology to discuss the latest solutions available to protect their borders, infrastructure and their populations  against acts of terrorism and organised crime. Over 170 international security contractors with cutting edge equipment and services will be on display and available for demonstration alongside the free-to-attend technology workshops for all visitors to attend.

New Rakuten Shopping Secrets survey reveals best breakup therapies for those nursing a broken heart this Valentine’s Day

leave a comment »

-SHOPPING RANKED ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO MEND A BROKEN HEART

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia  /PRNewswire/ — Shopping (29%) is the third best way to get over a break-up, according to a new survey, with talking to close friends (54%) coming in first, followed by eating comfort foods (33%).

Fashion and accessories, along with food and drink items, rank as some of the most popular gifts this Valentine’s Day – be it as personal retail therapy to mend a broken heart, or as a gift to the significant other – as uncovered in the Rakuten Shopping Secrets survey on 7,000 men and women across the world.

The findings are part of the Rakuten Shopping Secrets survey, commissioned by Rakuten, Japan’s biggest online shopping mall. The survey aims to uncover fun facts about shopping — the world’s favourite pastime — among consumers in Asia, Europe and America[1].

In particular, more respondents from shopping-mad Asia (36%) ranked shopping an effective breakup therapy compared to their counterparts in Europe or United States (24%).

More than one-third (34%) of men and women also prefer to shop online rather than offline in the one month after a break-up, with not wanting to go out and interact with people (53%), wanting more privacy (47%), not wanting people to see that they look depressed (22%), not wanting to bump into the ex (17%) or friends / friends of the ex (15%) cited as the main reasons. However, a small proportion (2%) have a darker motive for preferring to shop online — because they still have the credit card details of their former partner, or because they still have a supplementary credit card that is billed to their former partner!

It is hardly surprising then, that 22% of respondents spend more money shopping online compared to offline in the one month after a break-up, with about half (48%) reporting up to 20% increase in online spending.

Best Buys For The Broken-Hearted

Respondents are most likely to buy themselves a vacation (19%), food or drink (17%), as well as fashion and accessories (14%) to get over a break-up.

Besides shopping, respondents use a wide variety of methods to get over their break-ups. The top five break-up therapies are:

  1. Talking to close friends
  2. Having comfort food
  3. Shopping
  4. Doing sports such as jogging, swimming
  5. Watching TV

Thankfully for their former partners, respondents rank “planning an elaborate revenge plot” and “ranting on social media” as the worst break-up therapies.

Valentine’s Day gift wishlist

On a happier note, the survey also looked at gifting behaviours for Valentine’s Day for those who are happily in love.

45% of women expect a gift for Valentine’s Day compared to just 36% of men.

Top Valentine’s Day gifts that are high on the wishlist this year include a kiss, hug or something more (40%), a vacation (33%), chocolates and other food / drink (29%), fashion and accessories (22%), jewellery (20%) and flowers and soft toys (18%). Least popular gifts include pets, life insurance policy, hairloss products, stationery and gym / golf memberships.

To find your perfect Valentine’s Day gift (or breakup therapy), log on tohttp://www.rakuten.com.my/event/valentine-sale/.

Note:

[1] The survey was conducted on 1,000 respondents each in Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, United States, United Kingdom, Spain and Germany.

Hawksford Singapore releases Q14 2014 Singapore Business Formation Statistics Report

leave a comment »

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — Hawksford Singapore’s recently released Singapore Business Formation Statistics Report concludes that the final quarter of 2014 was record breaking in terms of business formation activities, despite the halted economic growth.

Hawksford Singapore has been publishing the quarterly report since 2010. ‘We have seen interesting trends emerge in Q4 of 2014, and throughout the whole of 2014. What is most pleasing to see is the level of business formation activity, despite what are challenging economic circumstances.  It looks as though initiatives, such as the share capital clause of the Singapore Company Act, are also stimulating further growth. I look forward to reviewing our Q1 2015 report,’ said Jacqueline Low, COO, Hawksford Singapore.

The report shows that although the total number of business formations is lower than the preceding quarter, it is in line with the trend observed in previous business years. But when compared to the average of previous years, the total number of new businesses formed has far exceeded the trend. The average for the last quarter usually hovers below 15,000, but Q4 of 2014 set a new record with 20,540 new business registrations.

The business registration activity for the whole of 2014 was phenomenally high. The year also witnessed a change in trend with Sole Proprietorship registration gaining momentum.  For the whole of 2014, a total of 32,923 Sole Proprietorships were formed, of which, 9,585 were registered in Q4.

A total of 38,178 Private Limited Companies were incorporated during 2014, of which 9,326 were incorporated in Q4.

Interestingly, a total of 176 Branch Offices were setup in Singapore during 2014, as against 98 in the previous year.

Entrepreneurs continue to take advantage of the favourable share capital clause of the Singapore Company Act. As a result, in this quarter, 77% of businesses were formed with a share capital of S$10,000 or less.

The share of companies incorporated with 100% foreign shareholding increased from 19% in Q3 to 22% in Q4 and the share of companies formed with mixed shareholding increased marginally from 10% in Q3 to 11% in Q4.

Singapore continued to attract enterprise and individual investors from diverse geographic origins. The share of foreign individual shareholders increased to 25% in Q4 from 23% in the previous quarter.

-Achieves Greater Energy Efficiency and Advances Efforts to Protect Biodiversity
HONG KONG, Feb. 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Mr. Nobu SU, a leading member of Asia’s shipping industry, and the Chairman of TMT Co., Ltd. (“TMT”) has registered a patent in the Republic of Liberia for a hybrid technology that he developed, and which enables a variety of vessels, including bulk carriers, tankers, PCTC and LNG ships to enhance fuel consumption.

The innovation, known as Hybrid Ship, consists of a conventionally driven main propeller and an electrically driven duct propeller, the different sailing mode allows reduction in fuel consumption, particularly when a vessel is travelling with minimum ballast.

The registration of a patent with the Liberia Industrial Property Office is of particular significance given the fact that Liberia is the world’s largest shipping nation for registration. Granted on January 13, 2014 for a period of 20 years, this is the first of several patents that will be pursued by Mr. SU and his partners. Presently, patents for Hybrid Ship have been filed with 25 shipping nations.

With regards to the registration of patents, Mr. SU said, “I believe that most of the patents pending will eventually be registered, as the technology complements the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Ballast Water Management Convention, which aims to control the ecological, economic and health problems resulting from the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens via ballast water. With the Hybrid Ship technology, a vessel requires minimum ballast water, and therefore reduces the risk of transferring contaminated water from one location to another, which has already led to a severe damage to biodiversity.”

Mr. SU has allowed the Hybrid Ship technology to be installed in vessels owned by his companies. He is presently offering the duct propeller technology to his peers for retrofitting; thereby enabling them to benefit from greater energy efficiency while concurrently protecting the marine environment.
