“We have gone through a cultural shift here at MakerBot over the past year, where listening and understanding the needs of our customers are cornerstones of our company. As a result, we’ve gained an in-depth understanding of the wider needs of professionals and educators that has informed our product development process,” said Jonathan Jaglom, CEO of MakerBot. “Our new solutions for professionals and educators are based on feedback addressing how we could accelerate and streamline the iterative design process and make teaching with a desktop 3D printer easier and more effective.”

MakerBot Replicator+ and Replicator Mini+ Bring Larger Build Volumes with Faster Print Speed to Users

The new MakerBot Replicator+ and Replicator Mini+ have been re-engineered and tested to provide better performance — that means faster, easier, and more reliable 3D printing experience for users. Both printers feature an improved gantry and Z-stage through stiffer materials and sturdier construction for consistent and predictable printing. Working closely with Stratasys, MakerBot’s new 3D printers went through extensive testing of 380,000+ hours[1]across multiple facilities to ensure reliable, high quality performance.

The new MakerBot Replicator+ and Replicator Mini+ Desktop 3D Printers feature:

Larger build volumes
Higher print speed[2]
Swappable MakerBot Smart Extruder+
The industrial design team at Canary, a leader in security technology, has been using MakerBot 3D Printers and recently testing MakerBot’s new solutions for professionals. “Using a MakerBot Desktop 3D Printer helped us accelerate the development of the new Canary Flex by allowing us to quickly go through multiple iterations,” said James Krause, Director of Industrial Design at Canary. “We were enthusiastic to test the new MakerBot Replicator+ and right away we noticed the faster workflow, as well as huge improvements to print quality and speed.”

MakerBot Print and MakerBot Mobile Enhance Printing Preparation Process

The updated version of MakerBot Mobile includes a Guided Setup feature that walks the user through the entire 3D printer setup process step by step.

The new MakerBot Print software helps streamline the 3D printing preparation process for users through multiple new features.

Native CAD Support[3] allows users to easily import common CAD files[4] and assemblies
Dynamic Print Settings[5] enable users to auto arrange multiple trays and change print settings (resolution or layer thickness) for each individual model on the build plate, saving time by printing models with varying print settings simultaneously.
Print Preview option allows users to review the Smart Extruder+’s path and make adjustments before printing a model.
MakerBot Print and an updated version of MakerBot Mobile are available now.

Slate Gray Tough PLA Filament Helps Professional Users Create Durable, High-impact Strength Prototypes and Fixtures

MakerBot Tough PLA combines the toughness of ABS and the flexural strength of PLA, making the material especially suitable for functional prototypes and prototyping jigs and fixtures with threaded and snap fits. MakerBot Tough PLA has been tested and optimized to print reliably and easily with the Tough PLA Smart Extruder+. The new bundle consists of three spools of MakerBot Tough PLA Filament in slate gray and the MakerBot Tough PLA Smart Extruder+.

“The new MakerBot Tough PLA is a workhorse for functional printing. We mainly use it for prototyping parts and jigs for product cycle testing,” said Mack Mor, Senior Product Engineer at OXO, who’s been testing MakerBot Tough PLA over the past months.” The flexibility is key for parts that don’t break, even with thin features that would normally be troublesome. The interlayer adhesion is strong, but the raft is still super easy to remove. The material also slides well so it is good for snap fits.”

The Slate Gray Tough PLA Filament Bundle is available now.

Thingiverse Education is a new platform that allows educators to learn 3D printing best practices and exchange knowledge from over 100 lesson plans created by other educators and vetted by MakerBot’s education and curriculum experts. Educators can filter lesson plans by subject, grade, or standard, and, in the spirit of Thingiverse, remix them to match specific learning goals.

leave a comment »

Acquistion provides Greenwave with ability to perform real-time data insights and fuels significant growth for IoT managed services
SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — Greenwave Systems, the global Internet of Things (IoT) software and managed services platform leader, today announced that it has acquired Predixion Software, a leading developer of real-time visual edge analytics software for the Internet of Things, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition will enhance Greenwave’s AXON Platform® with advanced visual analytics, enabling real-time data insights across one of the world’s largest connected networks. The purchase will also add top industry talent to the Greenwave team and accelerate customer development in IoT, M2M, network management and media delivery for IPTV and linear TV.

Through collaboration with a host of impressive partners, Greenwave’s technology is integrated into numerous advanced networks and connected devices in what comprises the largest cumulative IoT deployment in the world. Adding Predixion’s RIOT™ product, a fully self-contained edge analytics engine, to the AXON™ software suite, provides customers with an unprecedented opportunity to capture, analyze and act on real-time data insights. By embedding advanced analytics capabilities, AXON delivers a more intelligent IoT experience to customers and delivers deeper insights into network management and performance.

“We are thrilled to add Predixion Software to our team,” said Martin Manniche, founder and CEO at Greenwave Systems. “With this acquisition we welcome some of the industry’s strongest data scientists, engineers and top talent to our company, including Simon Arkell, Predixion’s co-founder and CEO, who will assume the role of GM of Software Plaforms for Analytics. The Predixion RIOT software is a natural addition to our product line because it’s designed for an end-to-end solution, scalabe in the cloud, and optimized for embedded devices that sit on fixed-line or mobile networks. Integrating RIOT software into our AXON Platform will enable our customers to extract value from nearly 8 million households and 4 million mobile devices deployed with AXON software.”

The IoT space is rapidly expanding as networking technology advances, connected devices proliferate and leading service providers across multiple verticals join the race. With the AXON Platform, Greenwave has secured its leading role as the industry’s frontrunner by enabling bold new connected services with partners like Verizon, Frontier Communications, IBM and E.ON, amongst others. Through these partnerships, Greenwave technology is now represented in IoT and M2M products spanning global telecommunications, utilities, broadband media delivery solutions and more.

“Joining the Greenwave team will extend our analytics technology to a remarkable range of managed networks,” said Simon Arkell. “We can touch IoT, M2M, video and broadband networks and bring tremendous value to our current list of customers and partners, including Intel, Wind River®, Accenture and GE. We are excited to join the team and we look forward to what we’ll accomplish together. Greenwave’s acquisition of Predixion will provide more financial horsepower to what Predixion has already developed and will enable us to accelerate growth and take the technology global.”

“Real-time analytics are invaluable to companies with IoT deployments as they provide critical insights into network devices at any given time. For example, with advanced analytics monitoring and reporting on devices across the network in real time, companies can fix maintenance issues before they cause bigger problems or shift resources to offload an overworked device,” said Jim Douglas, president of Wind River, a Predixion Software partner. “We are excited to continue our work with Greenwave and develop next generation analytics solutions for IoT.”

This acquisition further affirms Greenwave’s leadership in accelerating the connected technology space and marks a momentous year for the company, which includes record sales, a headcount of over 280 employees worldwide and other key milestone wins. The company has entered a new phase of development and will continue to use acquisitions as a key means to accelerate its growth.

Indonesia: Cheap Renewable Energy for Private and Utility Scale

leave a comment »

JAKARTA, Indonesia /PRNewswire/ — The cost of most renewable energy systems for both private use and utility scale projects have been reduced by so much that in several instances they have reached parity with fossil fuels, or are even cheaper. The most effective progress has been made in photovoltaic systems, while concentrated solar power, biomass, wind energy and hydro-power have greatly improved payback periods too.

Renewable Energy
Renewable Energy

In Indonesia the average price charged on electricity bills is 0.11 USD per KWh. This cost is deemed to increase since by 2018 subsidies will be abolished. The cost of electricity derived from solar panels in Indonesia ranges between 8 to 13 cents / KWh, depending on location and capacity installed. Payback time is about 6 years. Cost of production with fossil fuels is similar or higher, with diesel topping the list at about 23/25 cents per KWh. (Sources: MEMR, PLN, ADB). This makes solar an extremely attractive alternative.

To be informed on all developments in this industry and act upon them sign up for Renewable Energy Indonesia, the only trade show in Indonesia addressing exclusively Renewable Energy, which will be held at the Jakarta International Expo, Kemayoran, on 29 to 31 March 2017. The exhibition, organized by UBM plc, aims to be a platform that brings together professionals, investors and stakeholders with a sharp and exclusive focus on renewable energy and energy efficiency in order to exchange knowledge, best practices, resources and information.

Conference, seminars, workshops, debates and exhibitors’ presentations will add into the mix, and will complement the 3 days together with a business matchmaking platform.

About Renewable Energy Indonesia

Renewable Energy Indonesia, a B2B trade show with a uniquely clear focus on the spectrum of renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions available on the market will showcase resources, ideas, cutting-edge machinery, equipment, technology – including the latest Wind and Solar Power systems, Thermal, Hydro-power, Bio-mass – and the innovative financing solutions needed to foster the development of this strategic sector in Indonesia. Mr. Mikael Damberg, Swedish Minister for Enterprise and Innovation, says: “The opportunities for trade between Sweden and Southeast Asia are immense. With a rapidly growing middle class and a population of 650 million people, the growth of the region is one of the highest in the world. Southeast Asia has the third largest labour force, and it’s the fourth largest exporter in the world. The countries in the region plan to make significant investments in infrastructure in the near future opening up interesting business opportunities.”

Swedish Innovations:
Millions of hearts around the world beat with the help of a pacemaker. Candles are lit with the help of safety matches. Innumerable lives have been saved with the help of the threepoint seatbelt. These are just a few examples of Swedish innovations that have made a difference. Communicating with Skype, listening to Spotify and playing Minecraft are other examples.

The Innovation Union Scoreboard 2016, an index published by the European Commission, ranks Sweden as the leading country for innovation among EU member states. The reasons for this include a historic tradition of inventors, a social environment that encourages creativity, a commitment to gender equality and a strong belief in the individual. leave a comment »

-China’s Philanthropist of the Year Charles Chen Yidan to award $7.6 million annually for education research and development.

HONG KONG /PRNewswire/ — The official nomination procedure for the largest international prize in education research and development The Yidan Prize has been launched. The Yidan Prize established by Charles Chen Yidan, core founder of Chinese internet company Tencent and China’s Philanthropist of the Year, recognizes individuals whose work transforms education in an innovative way that can be repeated around the world to provide access and improve the quality of education for all.

In early September Mr. Chen visited the USA to introduce the Yidan Prize to leading members of the academic community as well as facilitate dialogue on the future of education with a number of educational institutions including Harvard University, Columbia University, Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also had meetings with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies and among other foundations. During his stay in the USA, Mr. Chen gave a keynote at UBS Philanthropy Forum — Americas.

Speaking on his visit to the USA, Mr. Chen said: “The idea of the Yidan Prize is to highlight awareness of the best projects and ideas out there today that could benefit people all around the world. There are fantastic initiatives all across the United States. Some schools are working with the idea of games as the way to a child’s mind. Others are engaged in ‘flipping’ the school program, so that children watch their lessons at home and do their homework at school, under the supervision of the teacher. Some are working with nature and the environment as the entry point to a child’s mind. Personalization of the school program allows for the interests, strengths and weaknesses of each child to form his or her curriculum, starting from a young age and continuing through higher education. I want not only to show my support with grant money associated with the Prize, but also to spread the word about best practice that could be accessed by all. I hope we receive many nominations from the United States and other countries.”

After the Yidan Prize Foundation’s visit to the USA, the team will head off to Canada as part of its outreach to North America. During the nomination period from this September to March 2017, the Foundation plans to visit Europe, Asia and other regions to call for more high quality nominations from across the globe.

Each nomination will be reviewed by a jury of highly respected experts led by former director-general of UNESCO Dr. Kichiro Matsuura. The Prize is divided between two categories — The Yidan Prize for Education Research and the Yidan Prize for Education Development. The two independent judging panels will screen valid nominations and select a candidate for each prize category. Prof Paul Chu Ching-wu, professor of physics, T.L.L., temple chair of science, University of Houston heads the Yidan Prize for Education Research panel, and Dorothy K. Gordon, director-general of the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT leads the Yidan Prize for Education Development panel.

Judging committee will review each nomination based on the criteria covering sustainability, future orientation, ability to achieve transformation and spirit of innovation. The first laureates will be announced in September 2017.

The Yidan Prize in education research and development will become the largest educational prize in the world. Each recipient will receive a total of HK$30 million (about $3.8 million), with a cash award of HK$15 million (about $1.9 million), and another HK$15 million (about $1.9 million) impact investment, to finance the winners’ research or projects. The Prize is backed by an endowment trust of HK$2.5 billion (about $320 million).

For nominees:

Nominations can be made by individuals or institutions — including schools, international organizations and private companies — from anywhere in the world. Self-nomination is allowed in exceptional cases.

Submissions must be made through the Yidan Prize website by March 31 2017. Nominations will be reviewed by international Judging Committee chaired by Dr Koichiro Matsuura, former director-general of UNESCO. The laureates are to announced in September 2017 and awarded at the Yidan Prize Summit in December 2017.

LATTICE80, the World’s Largest Fintech Hub to be Launched in Singapore

leave a comment »

-** A not-for-profit initiative led by Marvelstone Group **
-** LATTICE80 has been working closely with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) **

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — Marvelstone Group is set to launch the world’s largest Fintech Hub (over 30,000 sq ft) in early November.

An independent not-for-profit initiative, its objectives are to:

Help fintech startups prototype, develop and expand their business models overseas
Support existing companies and financial institutions in their adoption of innovations
Form public-private partnerships to further develop new tech and financial infrastructure
LATTICE80 is located in the Central Business District (CBD), close to the key financial institutions, stock exchange and the regulators – the same institutions that brought Singapore to its current position as the world’s third most competitive financial centre, after London and New York, according to a survey by London-based research firm Z/Yen Group.

Joe Seunghyun Cho, Chairman of Marvelstone Group commented, “We think Singapore is the right place for a global Fintech Hub for a number of reasons. Singapore, being a traditional financial and trading hub, has the legal infrastructure and access to global investors that budding fintech companies would look for.”

“Plus, the time is right for innovation, and people are more receptive to the use of technology in financial services,” said Marvelstone Group CEO, Gina Heng. She added, “Singapore, as a regional hub can also connect us to fintech globally.”

“LATTICE80,” said Heng, “aims to support the fintech ecosystem in Asia and bridge global players to the region. We have been working closely with MAS, who has made great strides in shaping the local fintech ecosystem. We also seek to bring partners onboard and collaborate with other Fintech hubs like London’s Level 39, Australia’s Stone & Chalk, and Israel’s The Floor.”

The move to establish LATTICE80 is in line with the Singapore Government’s overarching Smart Nation Vision, which is aimed at empowering people and businesses through increased access to data, innovative ideas and solutions, and utilising technology to better serve citizens’ needs.

Said Cho, “Singapore can be the best test bed for smart city solutions. Financial technology is one of the most important components of a Smart Nation, and can serve to power further innovation.

More details will be released closer to the launch.

Vela Genomics Launches Early Access to TheraKey(TM)

leave a comment »

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — Vela Genomics, a subsidiary of Vela Diagnostics, announced today the availability of TheraKey™, a clinical interpretation reporting service, for early access customers. TheraKey™ provides clinicians with a complete Patient-to-Treatments matching solution to accelerate the adoption of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) in routine clinical diagnostics.

“Empowering clinicians with information on available treatment options and up-to-date relevant clinical trials will greatly help them to make timely decisions on the best treatment for patients,” said Charlie Lee, PhD, Head of Research and Development of Vela Genomics. “This comprehensive data-driven approach significantly reduces time, manpower, costs and the risks of making an uninformed treatment decision. This is the true realization of Personalized Medicine.”

One of the biggest challenges clinicians face when using NGS for routine clinical diagnosis is the interpretation of genomics data and subsequent application. Generating an actionable clinical report from genomic data, that could be potentially huge, is typically a time-consuming and inconsistent manual process that entails cross referencing information across multiple data sources. With TheraKey™, clinicians need to submit only the Variant Calling File (VCF) and disease diagnosis of their patients to receive corresponding actionable clinical reports within 1 to 3 working days.

TheraKey™ is powered by a proprietary Natural Language Processing (NLP) engine and analytics pipeline that extracts, filters and agglomerate key entities such as genes, mutations, diseases, treatments and drug response from over 40 public and commercial databases on a regular basis. TheraKey™ is designed to generate an easy to read clinical report that has a clear and concise summary of relevant therapies and clinical trials.

Besides drugs approved by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) for the specific disease and gene or variant, the report also indicates other drugs approved by regulatory bodies, and investigational drugs that could be effective for the patient, providing clinicians with the broadest treatment options available. Up-to-date clinical trials that have the most relevance to the genomic biomarkers, disease diagnosis, eligibility and location proximity of the patient are included in the report as well.

Finally, all reports are verified by highly qualified curators adhering to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Guidelines®, highlighting contraindicated therapies if any, before they are made available to clinicians. This guarentees a timely, consistent and accurate clinical report that clinicians can use to provide tailored treatments to their patients.

Vela Genomics will initially focus on cancer, with the intention to expand to infectious diseases and other genetic diseases. A database comprising of genomic data from samples donated by patients from collaborators, coupled with associated clinical and drug response data will be developed to provide new insights into the biology of diseases and aid in the identification of novel drug targets. More details will be available in the coming months.

The early access service is currently not available for customers based in USA; the full launch will be made available soon.

Early access to TheraKey™ is currently available at http://www.velagenomics.com.

Latest products available from RS include light curtains from ABB and safety controllers from Pilz, alongside multiple other machine-guarding solutions from many of industry’s leading suppliers. For electrical safety, Dymo labelling machines can be used to address safe codes of practice — saving lives — and passive/active signage, safety mats and test equipment also help address important legislation.

In terms of site security and access control, RS stocks multiple products from Samsung’s class-leading security equipment, including extensive CCTV and display products. For personnel protection, the RS PPE landing page links to practically every product required for head to toe protection, including 3M ear defenders, MAPA gloves, JSP harnesses and CAT footwear.

RS also stocks its own range of safety products, which delivers quality, performance, choice and exceptional value for money. Key products in the RS Pro range include PPE, spill control, access control, emergency lighting, lockouts, tools and a broad range of signage.

To help with selection, the RS online DesignSpark resource provides information and advice, capturing the latest news, solutions and products to ensure top-level safety. This added-value service offers software, 3D models, articles, tools and forum discussions relating to many of the products in the extensive RS safety range.

Safety is no longer seen as a hindrance and effective safety regimens and procedures can be directly related to bottom-line performance as well as having a massive effect on morale and company/product branding. With such a broad range of products, advice and support, RS is in an ideal position to help its customers address even the most demanding safety concerns, setting them on the path to optimal operational performance.
