New data reveal record growth of As-A-Service segment

In Asia Pacific, strength in IaaS overcomes lackluster market for traditional sourcing; traditional contract volume falls to eight-year low

BANGALORE, India /PRNewswire/ — Information Services Group (ISG) (NASDAQ: III), a leading technology insights, market intelligence and advisory services company, today released the findings of its 2Q 2016 Asia Pacific ISG Index™, which include, for the first time, a view of the growing As-a-Service market.

The Asia Pacific ISG Index™, which measures commercial outsourcing contracts with an annual contract value (ACV) of US$5 million or more, shows combined second-quarter ACV for the region – representing both traditional and As-a-Service sourcing activity – reached US$1 billion, up 13 percent from the same period in 2015. Traditional sourcing values remained flat year on year while the As-a-Service market, at US$400 million, was up by 42 percent.

Over the first six months of the year, the Asia Pacific market generated a total of US$1.8 billion in ACV, up 7 percent compared with the first half of 2015. This increase was fueled by a 38 percent increase in As-a-Service ACV. Traditional outsourcing value, though remaining within a tight band of US$500 million – US$600 million for the sixth consecutive quarter, fell 7 percent for the period and the 67 contract awards was the lowest number recorded in eight years.

With ACV of US$600 million and just 51 contract awards, Information Technology Outsourcing (ITO) sunk to its lowest point since the first half of 2010. By contrast, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) activity rose 33 percent compared with the first half of 2015, with ACV reaching US$400 million, as the result of some large awards.

Infrastructure-as-a-Service ACV rose to its highest point ever in Asia Pacific. The US$600 million awarded equaled that of the more established ITO market. Software-as-a-Service values of US$200 million remained largely consistent with the prior-year period.

By sub-region, Australia-New Zealand recorded increases in both value and volume for the half year, while India had its weakest half-year performance in a decade.

By sector, only manufacturing and telecom had ACV growth in the first half of the year. Manufacturing ACV climbed 28 percent year on year to reach its best half-year performance since 2012. Telecom saw a modest 6 percent gain in ACV for the period. The ACV growth in both these sectors was driven by large deal awards, as each saw a reduction in the number of contracts compared with the first half of 2015.

Next-Generation BLE and Ultra-Wideband Technologies Threaten to Wipe Out Growth for Traditional Real-Time Location System (RTLS) Solutions

LONDON /PRNewswire/ — A host of next-generation BLE beacon and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technologies threaten to dramatically disrupt the real-time location system (RTLS) and asset tracking markets. ABI Research forecasts that new solutions by innovators like Bluvision, DecaWave, and UWINLOC, along with the arrival of Industrial IoT, will result in a combined RTLS and asset tracking market that more than triples from its current standpoint to reach $15 billion in 2021.

“For the first time, enterprises don’t have to choose between high accuracy, low cost, and ease of deployment,” says Patrick Connolly, Principal Analyst at ABI Research. “Emerging startups like SINTRA, Quuppa, Quantitec, and MIST can offer all three using proprietary BLE and UWB. This poses a serious threat to current market holders, as traditional technologies, like active-RFiD, Wi-Fi, and legacy UWB, remain restricted due to its inability to meet the aforementioned criteria.”

These traditional technologies will still have a place, but it will be increasingly marginalized, particularly as smartphones and wearables become more predominant in industrial spaces. ABI Research forecasts a 5:1 ratio on new RTLS technology tags versus traditional RTLS technologies by 2021, with significant growth into new greenfield applications like pallet tracking, condition monitoring and inventory management. Companies like Zebra that offer a mixture of traditional and new technologies that can be implemented and managed together under one platform will do well in the new market dynamic.

And the divide between active RTLS and passive asset tracking is blurring. Retailers’ growing need for accurate, real-time in-store inventory data led to Impinj and View Technologies developing passive radio frequency identification (RFiD) RTLS solutions, with ABI Research expecting many more to follow given the huge potential of this market. Similarly, UWINLOC’s passive UWB technology offers high accuracy at passive RFID level costs, with near real-time location updates. However, it is important to point out that passive ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFiD remains the dominant technology in terms of volumes and revenues throughout the forecast period.

Moving forward, companies like Avery Dennison, which recently partnered with EVRYTHING, will develop solutions that can track items beyond the point-of-sale (POS) and throughout their lifetimes. This brings benefits like authenticity verification, customer engagement, re-orders, loyalty programs, and post-sale services via a BLE beacon community.

“The increasing demand for instant gratification from customers will drive new competitive business models, including on-demand load matching and the uberization of delivery, from companies like Cargomatic and Confreight,” concludes Connolly. “Longer term, wearables and robotics will lead to an even greater need for accurate, real-time location data to improve performance.”

“Mitigating the impact of power outages, the increase in distributed renewable generation at times of low use, the rising costs of base and peak power and the trend to reduce or eliminate net metering programs is opening up opportunities for solar installers to offer storage as an integral part of their solutions. Many solar installers are not battery experts, yet this expertise is what is required to select equipment to design a system that optimally integrates energy storage. We wanted to offer them an all-in-one-box solution to simplify the prospect of adding storage to meet their customer’s needs,” said SimpliPhi CEO Catherine Von Burg. “Installers collaborated with us on the design of this new product because they were frustrated by the lack of product readiness, adaptability and scalability, as well as the needless complexity offered by other manufacturers with cooling and thermal regulation requirements. We worked together to combine best-in-class technologies into one plug-in box that can scale without the need of ventilation, cooling or the risk of thermal runaway characteristic of other lithium ion storage technologies.”

SimpliPhi assembles all the equipment into the ESS box and ships it out as a plug-and-play solution. The ESS offers three software modalities that meet the requirements of different applications, such as new and retrofit systems, including solutions that utilities can access for asset monitoring and deployment off-site for grid stabilization.

“SimpliPhi’s ESS was developed to help solve many energy storage pain-points that installers have with other storage systems,” said Michelle Klassen, president of LkM Solutions, who has also partnered with SimpliPhi in the development of the product. “This is why the ESS comes pre-integrated to work with microinverter, self-consumption and net-metered systems, for example.”

With the first units headed to Hawaii, a full roll out of the ESS begins in the fall of 2016 for residential and commercial installers.
