The recently completed 2015 Dry Docking Performance Benchmarking Study provides eye-opening metrics on dry docking practices, and cost and schedule outcomes

AMSTERDAM /PRNewswire/ — Asset Performance Networks, LLC (AP-Networks) has announced the results of the 2015 Dry Docking Performance Benchmarking Study. The study involved ship management organizations based out of Southeast Asia and Europe. Participants provided detailed data on dry docking planning and preparation, execution, and performance outcomes. By reviewing this data, along with insights gained from in-depth face-to-face interviews, AP-Networks drew on its knowledge as Industry’s premier benchmarking and assessment firm to provide a comprehensive “state of the industry” report on dry docking practices and outcomes.

The final report, covered in an article by industry website Splash, looks at how individual participants compare to the Industry average across a diverse array of performance benchmarks. Additionally, the study examines where the dry docking practice area as a whole stands compared to other asset-intensive practice areas worldwide, such as offshore shutdowns and petrochemical turnarounds. AP-Networks found that, overall, dry docking is an immature practice area with a great degree of potential to refine and optimize planning and execution practices in pursuit of much more competitive cost and schedule outcomes.

In addition to discussing Industry performance on cost, schedule, and safety, the final report highlights a number of opportunities for the maritime industry as a whole to capitalize on. leave a comment »

New design and analytical innovations make interacting with data on the web, mobile or in the enterprise faster, easier and more delightful

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — Tableau Software (NYSE: DATA) today announced the launch of the general availability of Tableau 10. A completely refreshed design, new analytical and mobile enhancements, options for preparing data and a host of new enterprise capabilities make this one of Tableau’s most significant releases in its history.

Logo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130718/SF48964LOGO

“As individuals and organisations in Asia Pacific ask more and more from their data, Tableau 10 answers this demand with over 30 new capabilities that deliver more analytical power than ever before,” said JY Pook, Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific, Tableau. “The new design makes data the central feature. Data integration helps maximise time spent on analysis. Data analytics innovations like the drag and drop clusters, help people do more advanced analysis of their data without needing to programme. Design, customise and publish a single dashboard with optimised views for any mobile device. And enterprise advancements continue to up the standard for delivering a governed, trusted self-service environment.”

Encouraging Creativity with Refreshed Design

Every element of the interface was reconsidered for Tableau 10 in order to maximise cognition and let people focus on their visual analysis. The new colour palette has been tuned up to ensure perceptual equality of shapes in complex visualisations and emphasis when needed. A new custom typeface was designed in partnership with the renowned typography expert Tobias Frere-Jones. It was crafted to optimise legibility and elegance for the many types of visualisations that are possible to create in Tableau. New default settings help people use visual design best practices for every question, but always give the option to change format so people have the flexibility to be creative and expressive with their data.

“The new Tableau 10 interface makes it look like you’ve worked with a graphic designer to produce your dashboards,” said Ron Eisenstein, Assistant Vice President of Advancement Services at DePaul University. “It’s clear that every last detail, including colours, fonts and formatting was considered when building the new interface. As a result, visualisations look better, are more intuitive and are more likely to get people to pay attention.”

Empowering the Mobile Workforce with Data You Can Touch

Whether you are an executive during an airport layover or a pharmaceutical rep customising visualisations between meetings with doctors, the new improvements and features of Tableau Mobile 10.0 provide a one-tap access to get your real-time data and support multi-device visualisations for the enterprise.

Tableau 10’s new Device Designer allows you to create dashboards that automatically render the right size and views for a range of devices, including Android phones. It also gives you the option to further customise views in a single file so you can create several device specific views and just publish once. Offline snapshots refresh in the background while you are connected so the most up-to-date data is always at your fingertips.

Deploying Tableau Mobile across an organisation has gotten easier and more secure. With support for Mobile Device Management platforms, IT can ensure the data remains safe, regardless of which device you are accessing it from.

Bringing Data Together and Providing Deeper Analysis

“Connecting to your data wherever it lives is an ongoing part of Tableau’s mission to help people see and understand their data,” said Andrew Beers, Vice President of Product Development at Tableau. “We understand that organisations have data in multiple places. So we’ve made preparing and integrating data easier than ever in Tableau 10. And new connectors like Google Sheets, QuickBooks Online and Kognitio, among others, make it easy to connect to your data and start exploring in a few clicks.”

New features such as cross-database join help people bring together disparate data sources at the row level without the need to start up complicated integration projects. Cross-database filtering now allows a single filter to be applied to multiple data sources in your workbooks, saving time and getting to the answers faster.

Tableau 10 has a host of new analytics capabilities that make complex analysis more accessible. Drag and drop clustering automatically identifies patterns and group your data based on k-means. The new Custom territories feature allows you to do advanced geographic analysis with a few clicks. The data highlighter makes it easy to call particular insight while keeping the rest of the data visible for context. Improvements to bar charts, maps data, geographic roles and radial distance units make data storytelling more natural and intuitive.

Empowering the Everyone to Explore in a Trusted Environment – on the Web and in the Enterprise

Tableau 10 makes it easier to do more on the web, including new ability to create dashboards online. Publishing workbooks and data sources to Tableau Server and Tableau Online is faster with a new flow for publishing. For cloud-based analytics, you can now set a data refresh schedule right in the browser with Tableau Online.

Fostering creativity in your organisation starts with providing IT the tools they need to enable a true self-service and governed environment. We have added easier ways for administrators to manage their Tableau Server deployments. Tableau 10 gives IT visibility into the usage of Tableau Desktop licenses and IT can also control the login experience for multi-tenant deployments with site-specific SAML IdP configuration.

For developers, new APIs have been added to Tableau to enable them to write custom applications that leverage data or to embed business intelligence into virtually any app or website. There are endless opportunities for new integrations with Tableau.

Fueled by an Engaged Community

Tableau 10 was built with the help of more than 75,000 passionate community members, including 14,000 beta testers. Over 30 features are the direct result of requests in Tableau’s Community Ideas Forum, including the ability to filter across data sources, get notified on extract failures and to subscribe others to a workbook, to name a few.

STUTTGART, Germany /PRNewswire/ —

Dr. Tilo Schweers, Chief Developer for Alternative Drive Systems
Florian Herbold, Chief Engineer for Transmission Development and Integration
Borgward Group AG is continuing to strengthen its team of experts at its headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. Borgward has appointed Dr. Tilo Schweers, 53, its Chief Developer for Alternative Drive Systems and Powertrain Electrification. Schweers is an expert automotive engineer with a wealth of experience in this field. His main tasks will include bringing the hybrid and electric models that are planned for the European market to the series-production stage. After studying mechanical engineering (focus: automotive technology) at RWTH Aachen, Schweers worked as a senior engineer at the university’s Institute of Automotive Engineering, where he also earned his doctorate degree. After Schweers joined Daimler in 1996, he chiefly worked on the development of alternative drive systems.

He was born and grew up in the “Borgward city” of Bremen, where he came into contact with the company’s spirit at an early age. “I’ve come full circle,” he says. “When I was a child and teenager in Bremen, I was bitten by the Borgward bug early on, because you still saw many Borgward vehicles in the streets back then! What’s more, I walked past the Borgward Villa every morning on my way to school.”

Florian Herbold, 38, Chief Engineer for Transmission Development and Integration, is a real car guy who learned his profession from the ground up. After completing his training as a car mechanic, Herbold studied mechanical engineering at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences. A native of Kassel, he got his first professional experience as a research engineer at a renowned drive system specialist in Stuttgart. Herbold then switched to a company of the Daimler Group, where he worked in a variety of senior positons on the development and application of hybrid automatic transmissions.

He sums up his reasons for joining Borgward Group AG as follows: “I was literally electrified when I read that Borgward was planning to play a technologically leading role like it did in the 1950s and enter the European market with plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles. With my experience and ideas, I can help to make the brand’s rebirth a success!”

Automotive Software-Defined Cockpits See Proprietary and Open Source Solutions Battle for Design Wins

leave a comment »

-ABI Research Forecasts More Than 143 Million Cockpit OSes Will Ship in 2021
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. /PRNewswire/ — With autonomous driving inching closer, cars are incorporating digital user interfaces, in-car LTE, and data utilization through cloud services. ABI Research forecasts more than 143 million operating system (OS) solutions will ship in 2021 to support the software-defined car cockpits, or automotive head units that support cluster displays and in-vehicle infotainment. As the competitive landscape widens, both proprietary and open source solutions providers, including Google’s Android, Intel’s Wind River, and Blackberry’s QNX, continue to battle for design wins.

“Increasingly, OEMs and software companies are collaborating directly to create automotive software solutions,” says Susan Beardslee, Senior Analyst at ABI Research. “Alibaba and SAIC’s recent car demo using the Alipay system shows just how involved OEMs now are in the sourcing and development of OS and software solutions. Some are even developing expertise in-house to drive ownership of the software stack and provide greater leverage, brand value, user experience, and ultimately, value-added services.”

Google’s Open Automotive Alliance won over nearly 50 automotive OEMs, all of which joined a partnership promoting Android integration. The GENIVI Alliance open source software architecture for infotainment includes a number of compliant solutions from automotive Tier 1s like Aisin, Continental, Delphi, Harman, Magneti Marelli, and Visteon. Qualcomm recently partnered with Google and unveiled plans for an Android Nougat-based car platform. Though still in the developer preview stage, the open source solution is working its way deeper into the car, with potential body and information system support creating a new dynamic for software-defined models.

It will be Android’s first “turn-key platform”, capable of common vehicle operations. Yet, though car OEMs like Audi, BMW, Kia, and Toyota Motor, currently use Google’s Android Auto technology for search, map, and other functions, ABI Research predicts Android N will likely not appear in cars before 2020.

“The connected car solutions form a fragmented competitive landscape, with established players like QNX Green Hills and Mentor Graphics already well-positioned in this space,” concludes Beardslee. “There are security concerns with any open source solution, such as potential threats from hackers compromising mission-critical operations, like a car’s brake or acceleration function. As proprietary and open source solutions continue to duke it out for design wins, there will be a continual need for collaboration and business models conducive to the diversity of customer needs and evolving use cases.”

These findings are from ABI Research’s Automotive OS and Software Trends (https://www.abiresearch.com/market-research/product/1024879-automotive-operating-systems-and-software-/). This report is part of the company’s Automotive, Smart Mobility, & Transportation sector (https://www.abiresearch.com/market-research/practice/autonomous-driving-location-tech/), which includes research, data, and analyst insights.

Lucrative Waste Heat Recovery: Concrete-based Thermal Storage Increases Industrial Efficiency

leave a comment »

OSLO, Norway /PRNewswire/ — Industrial operations require significant energy, with large amounts of this energy disappearing as waste heat after use. EnergyNest’s thermal energy storage now ensures that this widely untapped energy reserve can be converted effectively. Once stored, the time-shifted waste heat can be used in a variety of ways – e.g. to provide process steam, to generate own power or to stabilise entire power grids. It comes with many advantages, but the main one being a significant increase in resource efficiency. Consequently, industrial operations become environmentally friendlier. Industrial retrofits not only lead to a better energy balance, moreover such projects have short project paybacks making it economically very attractive.

One element of this new technical solution is the HEATCRETE® – a high performance concrete, which is composed of 75% quartz aggregates and 25% additives. A steel carrier structure encloses HEATCRETE®-embedded carbon steel pipes, through which a heat transfer fluid is charging and discharging the storage system at a pressure of up to 160 bar. A single module, fitting into a standard 40-foot container, provides an energy capacity of up to two megawatt hours thermal. Due to its modular structure, this system can be scaled up into the gigawatt hour range.

It is by far cheaper compared to other energy storage technologies – at around 20-25 US dollars per kilowatt hours: a fraction of battery costs. Due to its rigid structure and no moving parts, the storage system works virtually maintenance-free, so that operating costs are a fifth of what other storage systems require. The potential for own power generation via time shifted waste heat is tremendous. Companies can for example avoid peak price tariffs with their own waste-heat-to-power installation.
