AP-Networks Looks at the State of Global Dry Docking Performance

The recently completed 2015 Dry Docking Performance Benchmarking Study provides eye-opening metrics on dry docking practices, and cost and schedule outcomes

The study involved ship management organizations based out of Southeast Asia and Europe. Participants provided detailed data on dry docking planning and preparation, execution, and performance outcomes. By reviewing this data, along with insights gained from in-depth face-to-face interviews, AP-Networks drew on its knowledge as Industry’s premier benchmarking and assessment firm to provide a comprehensive “state of the industry” report on dry docking practices and outcomes.

The final report, covered in an article by industry website Splash, looks at how individual participants compare to the Industry average across a diverse array of performance benchmarks. Additionally, the study examines where the dry docking practice area as a whole stands compared to other asset-intensive practice areas worldwide, such as offshore shutdowns and petrochemical turnarounds. Every element of the interface was reconsidered for Tableau 10 in order to maximise cognition and let people focus on their visual analysis. “October will be a defining month for the World Design Capital Taipei 2016,” says Pei-ni Beatrice Hsieh, Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Taipei City Government. “It is an opportunity both to reflect on the progress we have already made and to ignite international dialogue with other cities; to share experience and expertise. The International Design House Exhibition will be held at Taipei City’s historic Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, once home to a tobacco factory, from Thursday, October 13 to Monday, October 31. The Design House will bring together local and international designers, studios, and organizations to curate a series of thought-provoking exhibitions that will challenge visitors to reconsider their relationship with the urban environment and experience first-hand how design can radically change the world’s cities.

An exhibition curated by Agua Zhou of Taipei-based studio Agua Design in the historical North Tobacco Factory, will showcase the results of innovative WDC Taipei 2016 projects, including the International Open Call and Designer in Residence Taipei programs, and explore the impact of Taipei City public planning and design policies.

In Warehouse One, curator Li Wei-Lang, the Creative Director of Afterain Design (Taiwan), will mount an exhibition showcasing breakthroughs and innovation in Taiwanese design, particularly in the fields of science and technology, art and craft, and sustainability. In Warehouse Two, Page Tsou, celebrated visual artist and founder of Taipei-based studio, Auspicious Design, has invited renowned illustrators and visual artists from around the world to exhibit works that reflect on their impressions of Taipei.

Warehouses Three and Four will be home to an international roster of exhibitors, with some participants hailing from cities that are past or future holders of the World Design Capital designation. The exhibition will explore the WDC Taipei 2016 theme of “Sisheng: Life Quality and Health, Ecological Sustainability, Smart Living, and Urban Regeneration.” In Warehouse Five, renowned Taiwanese contemporary calligraphic artist Tong Yang-Tze will collaborate with up-and-coming Taiwanese fashion designers, and spatial and sound designers to create an interactive exhibition that will breathe new life into traditional Chinese calligraphy.

The International Design Policy Conference, which will be held on the weekend of October 15 and 16 at the Taipei International Convention Center, aims to explore how design thinking can be integrated into public policy. Policy experts, industry professionals, and academics will be invited to share their insights into and case studies on urban development through design.

The International Design Week Forum, which will be held on Monday, October 17 and Tuesday, October 18 at the Creativity Theater in Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, will bring representatives from various design weeks and festivals around the world to contribute their insights into how cities can support and harness the innovation of designers. The final International Signature Event in the October series is the invitation-only Network of Cities Meeting. New Managers at Borgward: Team of Experts Grows in Germany

Borgward has appointed Dr. Tilo Schweers, 53, its Chief Developer for Alternative Drive Systems and Powertrain Electrification. Schweers is an expert automotive engineer with a wealth of experience in this field. His main tasks will include bringing the hybrid and electric models that are planned for the European market to the series-production stage. After studying mechanical engineering (focus: automotive technology) at RWTH Aachen, Schweers worked as a senior engineer at the university’s Institute of Automotive Engineering, where he also earned his doctorate degree. After Schweers joined Daimler in 1996, he chiefly worked on the development of alternative drive systems.


He was born and grew up in the “Borgward city” of Bremen, where he came into contact with the company’s spirit at an early age. “I’ve come full circle,” he says. “When I was a child and teenager in Bremen, I was bitten by the Borgward bug early on, because you still saw many Borgward vehicles in the streets back then! What’s more, I walked past the Borgward Villa every morning on my way to school.”

Florian Herbold, 38, Chief Engineer for Transmission Development and Integration, is a real car guy who learned his profession from the ground up. After completing his training as a car mechanic, Herbold studied mechanical engineering at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences. A native of Kassel, he got his first professional experience as a research engineer at a renowned drive system specialist in Stuttgart. Herbold then switched to a company of the Daimler Group, where he worked in a variety of senior positons on the development and application of hybrid automatic transmissions.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. /PRNewswire/ — With autonomous driving inching closer, cars are incorporating digital user interfaces, in-car LTE, and data utilization through cloud services. ABI Research forecasts more than 143 million operating system (OS) solutions will ship in 2021 to support the software-defined car cockpits, or automotive head units that support cluster displays and in-vehicle infotainment. As the competitive landscape widens, both proprietary and open source solutions providers, including Google’s Android, Intel’s Wind River, and Blackberry’s QNX, continue to battle for design wins.

“Increasingly, OEMs and software companies are collaborating directly to create automotive software solutions,” says Susan Beardslee, Senior Analyst at ABI Research. “Alibaba and SAIC’s recent car demo using the Alipay system shows just how involved OEMs now are in the sourcing and development of OS and software solutions. Some are even developing expertise in-house to drive ownership of the software stack and provide greater leverage, brand value, user experience, and ultimately, value-added services.”

Google’s Open Automotive Alliance won over nearly 50 automotive OEMs, all of which joined a partnership promoting Android integration. The GENIVI Alliance open source software architecture for infotainment includes a number of compliant solutions from automotive Tier 1s like Aisin, Continental, Delphi, Harman, Magneti Marelli, and Visteon. Qualcomm recently partnered with Google and unveiled plans for an Android Nougat-based car platform. Though still in the developer preview stage, the open source solution is working its way deeper into the car, with potential body and information system support creating a new dynamic for software-defined models.

It will be Android’s first “turn-key platform”, capable of common vehicle operations. Yet, though car OEMs like Audi, BMW, Kia, and Toyota Motor, currently use Google’s Android Auto technology for search, map, and other functions, ABI Research predicts Android N will likely not appear in cars before 2020.

“The connected car solutions form a fragmented competitive landscape, with established players like QNX Green Hills and Mentor Graphics already well-positioned in this space,” concludes Beardslee. “There are security concerns with any open source solution, such as potential threats from hackers compromising mission-critical operations, like a car’s brake or acceleration function. As proprietary and open source solutions continue to duke it out for design wins, there will be a continual need for collaboration and business models conducive to the diversity of customer needs and evolving use cases.”

Lucrative Waste Heat Recovery: Concrete-based Thermal Storage Increases Industrial Efficiency

OSLO, Norway /PRNewswire/ — Industrial operations require significant energy, with large amounts of this energy disappearing as waste heat after use. EnergyNest’s thermal energy storage now ensures that this widely untapped energy reserve can be converted effectively. Once stored, the time-shifted waste heat can be used in a variety of ways – e.g. to provide process steam, to generate own power or to stabilise entire power grids. It comes with many advantages, but the main one being a significant increase in resource efficiency. Consequently, industrial operations become environmentally friendlier. Industrial retrofits not only lead to a better energy balance, moreover such projects have short project paybacks making it economically very attractive.

One element of this new technical solution is the HEATCRETE® – a high performance concrete, which is composed of 75% quartz aggregates and 25% additives. A steel carrier structure encloses HEATCRETE®-embedded carbon steel pipes, through which a heat transfer fluid is charging and discharging the storage system at a pressure of up to 160 bar. A single module, fitting into a standard 40-foot container, provides an energy capacity of up to two megawatt hours thermal. Due to its modular structure, this system can be scaled up into the gigawatt hour range.

It is by far cheaper compared to other energy storage technologies – at around 20-25 US dollars per kilowatt hours: a fraction of battery costs. Due to its rigid structure and no moving parts, the storage system works virtually maintenance-free, so that operating costs are a fifth of what other storage systems require. The potential for own power generation via time shifted waste heat is tremendous. Companies can for example avoid peak price tariffs with their own waste-heat-to-power installation.
