BD and A*STAR’s Singapore Immunology Network Enter Research Partnership to Advance Cell Analysis Technologies

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — Becton Dickinson Holdings Pte Ltd (BD), a global leader in life science technologies, and the Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN) a research institute under Singapore’sAgency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), with expertise in immunology and flow cytometry, today announced a research partnership aimed at improving existing cell analysis technologies in order to advance immunology research and bring forth discoveries that can be translated into positive healthcare outcomes.

Under the collaboration, BD will provide SIgN with their novel Horizon Brilliant™ reagents which, combined with BD’s state-of-the-art flow cytometer, the FACSymphony™, will enable more identification and detailed analysis of cell populations than before. The BD FACSymphoy™ system can simultaneously detect up to 30 different markers at the single cell level, and offers high-speed analysis with detection rates of up to 40,000 events per second. SIgN is the first in Asia to employ the BD FACSymphony™ system. This game-changing technology will greatly increase the number of parameters that can be investigated simultaneously in a single cell, thereby enabling SIgN researchers to rapidly identify the components of the immune system that are most affected by aging, and accelerate the development of solutions to immunosenescence.

The all-new OUE Skyspace LA is California’s tallest open-air observation deck at almost 1,000 feet above downtown Los Angeles, and the premiere destination for 360-degree views of the city, stretching from the Hollywood Hills to the Pacific Ocean.

NUS Study: Intrusive Parents May Lead Children to Be Overly Self-critical

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — In a five-year study on primary school children in Singapore, researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) found that children with intrusive parents had a higher tendency to be overly critical of themselves and this tendency increased over the years. Children in the study who demonstrated high or increased level of self-criticalness also reported to have elevated depression or anxiety symptoms.

“When parents become intrusive in their children’s lives, it may signal to the children that what they do is never good enough. The child may become afraid of making the slightest mistake and will blame himself or herself for not being ‘perfect’. Over time, such behaviour, known as maladaptive perfectionism, may be detrimental to the child’s well-being as it increases the risk of the child developing symptoms of depression, anxiety and even suicide in very serious cases,” said Assistant Professor Ryan Hong, who led the study which was conducted by a team of researchers from the Department of Psychology at the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

The study looked at two aspects of maladaptive perfectionism: self-criticalness, and socially prescribed perfectionism, and examined how they develop in primary school children.

In the study, children who were seven years old were recruited from 10 primary schools in Singapore, and for each family, the parent more familiar with the child was involved in the study. The research was conducted from 2010 to 2014.

Parental intrusiveness was assessed in the first year of the study using a game played by the child, who was then seven years old, with the parent accompanying the child. In the game, the child had to solve puzzles within a time limit, and the parent was told that he or she could help the child whenever necessary. The purpose of this task was to observe whether the parent interfered with the child’s problem-solving attempts, regardless of the child’s actual needs.

The NUS research team observed the participants’ behaviours, and coded intrusive behaviours exhibited by the parents in the context of the game. Subsequent assessments on the children were carried out at ages eight, nine and 11. Children’s maladaptive perfectionism and symptom levels were obtained from the child and parent reports.

Analysis of the data collected from 263 children showed that about 60 per cent of them were classified as high and/or increasing in self-criticalness, while 78 per cent of the children was classified as high in socially prescribed perfectionism. Both aspects of maladaptive perfectionism tend to co-occur, with 59 per cent of the children having both self-criticalness and socially prescribed perfectionism.

“Our findings indicate that in a society that emphasises academic excellence, which is the situation in Singapore, parents may set unrealistically high expectations on their children. As a result, a sizable segment of children may become fearful of making mistakes. Also, because they are supposed to be ‘perfect’, they can become disinclined to admit failures and inadequacies and seek help when needed, further exacerbating their risk for emotional problems,” explained Asst Prof Hong.

Asst Prof Hong advised parents to be mindful of not pushing their children over the edge. “Children should be given a conducive environment to learn, and part of learning always involves making mistakes and learning from them. When parents become intrusive, they may take away this conducive learning environment,” he said.

The findings of study were published online in the Journal of Personality in March 2016.

Senior Executives in Asia More Likely to Favor a Team-focused Leadership Style than are Executives in Other Regions

TIANJIN, China /PRNewswire/ — Research by Heidrick & Struggles (Nasdaq: HSII), a premier provider of executive search, leadership consulting and culture-shaping services, indicates that senior business leaders based in Asia demonstrate team-focused leadership styles to a greater extent than their peers globally.

Analyzing data from the firm’s proprietary assessment tool, Leadership Signature®, researchers at Heidrick & Struggles found that significantly greater percentages of senior executives based in Asia favor the “Energizer” and “Harmonizer” leadership styles than did senior executives as a whole globally.

The leadership advisory firm announced the findings of its research at the World Economic Forum (WEF) “Annual Meeting of the New Champions” in Tianjin. Heidrick & Struggles is a strategic partner of WEF.

“Over the past few years, globalization and disruptive technologies have changed the skills required to be an effective leader. At Heidrick & Struggles, we have moved beyond assessing leaders by their personality type and past achievements. We also look at their leadership styles, cultural fit and agility, using a data-driven, scientific approach,” said Steve Mullinjer, Regional Leader of Heidrick & Struggles Asia Pacific.

The Energizer and Harmonizer leadership styles are two of the most team-centered among eight primary styles identified in the firm’s proprietary Leadership Signature® methodology:

  • Energizer — Executives demonstrating this leadership style energize others through their personality and clear articulation of strategic vision and meaning.  They inspire performance in others, bring people together toward a common purpose.
  • Harmonizer — Executives demonstrating this pattern of leadership create positive environments and recognize the efforts of others. They tap into the areas of knowledge and expertise in those around them in ways that enable efficient execution.

For this study 1,440 executives currently based in Asia were compared with more than 5,900 executives globally in the Leadership Signature® database.

Notably, among leaders currently based in Asia, Heidrick & Struggles found that those executives who grew up in the region showed a significantly higher tendency toward the Energizer and Harmonizer styles than those who grew up elsewhere. Executives born on other continents who are now based in Asia have a similar distribution of leadership styles as executives as a whole globally.

“Our research supports the idea that country of origin predicts, to a certain extent, how people lead,” said Karen West, Partner, Global Leadership Consulting Practice at Heidrick & Struggles. “Those who were raised in Asia and currently work there are much more likely to tend toward the Harmonizer and Energizer leadership styles. To a large extent, their style of leadership reflects cultures that focus on the good of the group as opposed to individual performance.”

Gender does not appear to be a significant factor in predicting leadership style among executives in Asia. Heidrick & Struggles found no significant difference in the distribution of leadership styles of senior executives who are male compared to their female counterparts.

“It’s important to note that there is no such thing as a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ leadership style, and in fact individuals are likely to be able to access every style to a varying degree,” West said.

In addition to the analysis within the Leadership Signature® database, Heidrick & struggles surveyed 311 senior executives in Asia, including 215 at Senior Vice President level or above. Among the findings from that study:

  • More than three-quarters (76%) of the Asian-based executives have expanded the scope or complexity of their jobs twice or more over the past five years, underscoring the region’s highly dynamic business landscape.
  • More than one third (37%) of senior executives in Asia have moved to a different country to start a new role at least three times during their career.

During today’s official inauguration ceremony, Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela and Panama Canal Administrator and CEO Jorge L. Quijano spoke to a crowd of more than 25,000 jubilant Panamanians, Canal employees, heads of state and dignitaries from around the world, Canal customers, shipping and trade executives, and nearly 1,000 journalists. This is the first expansion of the waterway since its original construction.

“More than 100 years ago, the Panama Canal connected two oceans. Today, we connect the present and the future,” said Mr. Quijano speaking to the people of Panama. “It is an honor to announce that what we did it together: providing this great connection to the world. This is the beginning of a new era.”

“Canal users can be assured that we’ll continue to support the Panama Canal Authority and our port operators to provide them a world class service and strengthen our logistics system by creating the necessary incentives and conditions to give added value to our inter-oceanic route,” said Panamanian President Varela.

The inaugural transit began with the passage of Neopanamax vessel COSCO Shipping Panama through the Agua Clara Locks on the Atlantic side of the country and concluded with its transit through the Cocoli Locks on the Pacific side. The ship is en route to Asia.

Considered and analyzed with more than 100 studies, the Expansion will provide greater economies of scale to global commerce. It will introduce new routes, liner services, and segments such as liquefied natural gas (LNG).

“We are thrilled that we currently have 170 reservations for Neopanamax ships, commitments of two new liner services to the Expanded Canal, and a reservation for the first LNG vessel, which will transit in late July,” Mr. Quijano added. “Our customers care that their supply chain is reliable and that they have a diversity of shipping options. And the Canal has always been reliable; today, we offer the world new shipping options and trade routes.”

The Expansion Program is the Canal’s largest enhancement project. In 2006, more than 75 percent of Panamanians approved the project in a nation-wide referendum, and, in 2007, construction of the $5.25 billion project began. It included the construction of a new set of locks on the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the waterway and the excavation of more than 150 million cubic meters of material, creating a second lane of traffic and doubling the cargo capacity of the waterway.

In 2015, the original Canal set a tonnage record, transiting 340.8 million PC/UMS. It will continue to operate, transiting Panamax-sized vessels or smaller. While the Expansion’s locks are 70 feet wider and 18 feet deeper than those in the original Canal, they use less water due to water-savings basins that recycle 60 percent of the water used per transit.

COSCO Shipping Panama set sail June 11 from the Greek Port of Piraeus carrying 9,472 TEUs and measuring 299.98 meters in length and 48.25 meters in beam. Originally named Andronikos, the vessel was renamed to honor and pay respect to the country of Panama and the Canal.
