Oxitec Expands Vector Control Solution in Brazil

OXFORD, England /PRNewswire/ — Oxitec and Piracicaba City Hall have today finalized their multi-year expansion of the ‘Friendly Aedes aegypti Project’ to cover an area of 60,000 people in the center of the city of Piracicaba, Brazil.  Due to the large number of people who travel through this region, this project may also benefit neighbouring areas of the city. Additionally, the initial project, which has been deploying Oxitec’s OX513A solution in an area of 5,000 people in the CECAP/Eldorado district since April 2015, has been extended.

“Piracicaba’s decision to broaden the reach of our project demonstrates their confidence in our innovative vector control solution and is an important step forward in the effort to combat the dangerous Aedes aegypti mosquito, and the viruses it transmits, in a highly targeted and environmentally safe manner,” said Oxitec Chief Executive OfficerHadyn Parry.  “We have a cost-effective solution that is proven and ready to be deployed to make a real impact in saving lives and protecting economies.”

It is estimated that up to half of the world’s population lives alongside the dangerous Aedes aegypti mosquitoes which are the primary vector for dengue, chikungunya, and Zika virus — some of the most damaging arboviruses to public health and economies of nations. For Brazil in particular, this mosquito has become an increasing health risk given the significant incidence of dengue as well as the rise in Zika and chikungunya infections.  The Zika virus has been linked to birth defects such as microcephaly, and all three viruses cause a number of neurological disorders such as acute myelitis, meningoencephalitis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Efficacy trials of Oxitec’s genetically engineered OX513A mosquito across Brazil, Panama and the Cayman Islandsall resulted in a greater than 90% suppression of the wild Ae. aegypti mosquito population – an unprecedented level of control. Oxitec’s solution was recently recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for deployment in operational conditions, and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recently declared it will provide technical support for countries that wish to implement OX513A in the fight against this menacing mosquito.

Under the terms of the expansion/extension agreement, Oxitec will deploy its ‘Friendly Aedes aegypti control solution near the center of the city of Piracicaba for two years, and continue to protect people in the CECAP/Eldorado district for another year.  To support this growing program and to meet increasing demand for its proprietary vector control solution, Oxitec is building a new mosquito production facility in Piracicaba that will generate many jobs in the region.  This facility will have the capacity to produce 60 million Oxitec male mosquitoes a week to help protect over 300,000 people.

The Health Secretary of Piracicaba, Pedro Mello, commented, “It is with great joy that we signed this contract. It’s one more step we take towards making the city of Piracicaba the first in the world to rid itself of this mosquito that has caused so much harm to millions of people worldwide. From July 2014 to 2015, CECAP/Eldorado had 133 dengue fever cases.  From July 2015 to May 20th, 2016, the same neighborhood had only 7 confirmed cases.  Importantly we are doing this with a technology that is innovative, clean, environmentally friendly and sustainable.”

Fourth International FOOTBALL FOR FRIENDSHIP Forum Brings Together Young Footballers from Three Continents

Products Must Be Certified to Updated CCC Implementation Rules for Motor Vehicles and Safety Accessories by Year End

HONG KONG /PRNewswire/ — The Nanjing Branch of the China Quality Certification Centre (CQC) hosted a two-day training workshop on the updated China Compulsory Certification (CCC) implementation rules for motor vehicles and safety accessories on May 19-20. Qing Gu, Manager for Transport Services at TUV Rheinland Greater China (“TUV Rheinland”), served as the instructor for the international certification component of the training workshop. Nearly 100 participants from 60 companies took part in the workshop, which generated strong interest among participants who engaged in in-depth exchange with the instructors.

Ensuring successful transition for CoP control plans

To strengthen reforms and systematically implement the compulsory product certification system, CQC implementation rules for motor vehicles and safety accessories were revised by the Certification and Accreditation Administration of the People’s Republic of China (CNCA) and officially took effect on January 1, 2015. Products covered by the updated implementation rules include motor vehicle and safety accessories such as automotive interior accessories, automotive lighting, seat belts, door locks, fuel tanks, seats, and brake hoses. Companies involved with motor vehicles and safety accessories should submit Conformity of Production (CoP) control plans that conform to the new rules and requirements, and have them approved by December 31, 2016.

As the national certification organization, CQC has followed the new implementation rules for new product certification applications since January 1, 2015. For products that were already certified before the new implementation rules took effect, CQC is allowing them to transition to the new certification through certificate renewal, standard update, product modification and annual inspection.

The CQC Nanjing Branch can now process CoP conversion applications from automotive parts companies withinJiangsu Province. This training workshop was held by CQC Nanjing Branch to ensure that companies with existing certifications can successfully complete the transition process for their control plans. Training is intended for certification application personnel, quality directors, technical quality or production management staff. Content of training covered the submission process and issues in the motor vehicle and safety accessories CoP control plan, annual inspection and reporting requirements under the new rules, one-stop solutions for CCC and international certification, and other common issues.

TUV Rheinland the international leader in automotive parts approval and testing

During the workshop, Qing Gu provided a detailed introduction to the international certification rules, process and issues for automotive parts. He also mentioned the services offered by TUV Rheinland in this field. According to Gu, as a leading international certification organization, TUV Rheinland can now provide E-Mark and multi-region certification (e.g. certification for Taiwan, India, Middle East, Brazil and Africa) for automotive parts (e.g. car lights, rear view mirrors, car horns, tires, glass, child safety seats, seats, safety belts, electronic and electrical products). TUV Rheinland currently has more than 30 experts in the field and its testing laboratories include accredited national and corporate laboratories. TUV Rheinland is also an accredited technical services organization with transportation authorities in many countries. Key certification channels include the following transport authorities: KBA (E1 – Germany), RDW (E4 – the Netherlands), NSAI (E24 – Ireland), SNCH (E13 – Luxembourg) and CSDD (E34 – Latvia).

New Data on Stretta Therapy for GERD Shows 10-Year Effectiveness in Challenging Patient Populations

NORWALK, Connecticut /PRNewswire/ — Mederi Therapeutics Inc., manufacturers of Stretta Therapy for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), announced the presentation of new data at last week’s Digestive Disease Week® (DDW) 2016 in San Diego. This new 10-year data shows efficacy of Stretta in three specific types of non-classical GERD patients: those with high BMI, those with respiratory symptoms of GERD, and those suffering from recurring GERD after anti-reflux surgery. DDW activities also included the launch of the new Stretta RFT3 system, and four presentations by international Stretta expert physicians.

10-Year Data
The data, presented by Dr. Mark Noar (The Heartburn and Reflux Study Center, Towson, MD), examined challenging GERD patient subsets that were included in his published 10-year study, and demonstrated that each of these patient populations achieved the primary outcomes of long-term symptom relief, reduced medication use, and patient satisfaction.

  • Stretta is effective in the treatment of medically refractory GERD, independent of BMI. 73 patients comprising three subpopulations of BMI (Normal, Overweight, and Obese) were studied. At 10-year follow-up, regardless of BMI, all parameters demonstrated statistically significant improvement.
  • Stretta is effective in laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). 99 refractory LPR and non-LPR patients were studied. At 10-year follow-up, all parameters demonstrated statistically significant improvement across the entire respondent cohort.
  • In patients with refractory GERD after a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication (LNF), Stretta results in sustained improvement with near equivalence and slightly better outcomes than the non-LNF cohort. 18 refractory LNF (RLNF+S) and 81 standard refractory GERD patients were studied. At 10-year follow-up, both patient subsets demonstrated statistically significant improvement in primary outcomes.

About 30% of adults suffer from chronic GERD. Many of these patients are dissatisfied with the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or are concerned about the risks associated with long-term PPI use. Many wish to avoid invasive surgery. Stretta provides a non-surgical, middle option for this patient.

At DDW, Mederi unveiled new aesthetic, functional, and material improvements to further facilitate ease of use and optimize the delivery of the clinically proven Stretta therapy.
