New Yidan Prize set to Transform Global Education

leave a comment »

-World’s biggest education accolade to award annual prizes totaling HK$60 million (about US$7.6 million), half of which will fund ground-breaking education research and development initiatives across the world

HONG KONG /PRNewswire/ — The Yidan Prize today unveiled the world’s largest education awards scheme, and called for nominations across the world for the inaugural awards, with the winners to be announced in September 2017, and a ceremony and the Yidan Prize Summit to be held December the same year in Hong Kong.

To quantify the challenges and opportunities in expanding and improving access to education, furnishing students with the skills they need, and leveraging technology in education, The Yidan Prize commissioned the EIU to conduct research. As part of the series Yidan Prize Forecast, Education to 2030 identifies five global education indicators across 25 economies including 8 from Asia Pacific.

The indicators are public expenditure on education; the affordability of tertiary education; youth unemployment; the number of science, technology, engineering and mathematics graduates, also known as STEM, in the labor force; and internet access in schools.

Founded by the core founder of Tencent Holdings Ltd., Charles Chen Yidan, the Yidan Prize is the largest of its kind in monetary terms, with annual awards of HK$60 million (about US$7.6 million) divided between two categories – The Yidan Prize for Education Research and The Yidan Prize for Education Development. The Prize is financed and governed by a HK$2.5 billion (about US$320 million) trust. The endowment was made prior to the establishment of Yidan Prize.

The initiative recognizes outstanding individuals or teams of up to three people – teachers, researchers, academics, policymakers, and social activists, among others – and funds education initiatives across the world through impact investment.

Charles Chen Yidan, founder of the Yidan Prize, said: “The Prize recognizes and supports agents of change whose work transforms education in a sustainable way, and encourages innovative approaches to education research and development. It is intended to ignite constructive and inclusive dialogue around education. Through education, we can help tomorrow’s global citizens shine and create a better world.”

The Yidan Prize for Education Research recognizes outstanding research that makes a significant contribution to education, while the Yidan Prize for Education Development recognizes innovative ideas that tackle pressing education challenges.

Each prize totals HK$30 million (about US$3.8 million), with a cash award of HK$15 million (about US$1.9 million), and another HK$15 million (about US$1.9 million) impact investment, to be distributed in three installments over the three years to finance the winners’ research or projects. Gold medals will be presented to the winners at the inaugural Yidan Prize presentation.

Nomination process

The Yidan Prize will invite nominators, comprising government bodies, non-government organizations and professional associations, and thought leaders, to propose nominees.

Self-nomination is allowed in exceptional cases.

The two independent judging panels will screen valid nominations and select a candidate for each prize category.

Candidates will be assessed on four criteria.

Nominated research or projects must:

  • Be future-oriented;
  • Be innovative;
  • Be transformative; and
  • Achieve sustainable results.

The Judging Committee will then pass its selection to the Board of Directors for approval and endorsement.

The APC Group Expands into Africa

leave a comment »

GENEVA /PRNewswire/ —  Global plantation giant, the APC Group — a group of associated companies that includes the award‐winning Asia Plantation Capital — has now widened its global corporate presence to include Africa Plantation Capital in Kenya, with a major acquisition of land for the creation of high value bamboo plantations.

This new expansion is to facilitate the group’s major investment into a forestry plantation sector that could be crucial in meeting the challenges currently faced by the global timber and biomass industries, as well as driving the quest for sustainable manufacturing solutions.

Bamboo, the fastest growing plant on the planet, and known as the 'miracle plant'.
Bamboo, the fastest growing plant on the planet, and known as the ‘miracle plant’.

Bamboo has been identified as one of the most sustainable species in the world today, and presents a wide range of potentially lucrative commercial opportunities. The company has been developing commercial bamboo plantations in Thailand for several years, and has been managing them on behalf of private clients, along with its own inventory.

Established initially for the production of bamboo shoots for the food industry in Asia, the company has invested heavily in research and development, ultimately discovering multiple new (and in some cases ground-breaking) end uses for bamboo pulp and fibre.

Working with experts in the industry, alongside its own award-winning Scientific Advisory Board comprising some of Asia’s leading academics from universities and scientific bodies, Asia Plantation Capital now believes that it has developed an unrivalled husbandry programme for commercial bamboo plantations that includes multiple, fully vertically integrated end products. This embraces the core values and the abiding ethos of Asia Plantation Capital and its associated companies, and brings the full ‘from Soil to Oil to You’ story into a new sector.

One of bamboo's many end products – the Plantation Capital Group's 'Boo Bike'.
One of bamboo’s many end products – the Plantation Capital Group’s ‘Boo Bike’.

Bamboo has been described as the ‘miracle crop’, and the APC Group intends to follow its award-winning success in other plantation sectors — such as agarwood — by developing the commercial prospects and maximising the potential of the global bamboo industry. Bamboo is widely considered to be part of the solution to numerous environmental issues, and has, to date, been commercialised on a very small scale.

Bamboo luggage will soon be seen on many conveyor belts at airports around the world.
Bamboo luggage will soon be seen on many conveyor belts at airports around the world.

“Bamboo has been a subject that has fascinated us at APC for many years,” said Gary Crates, CEO, The APC Group, Geneva. “Not only because of its never ending and growing list of end commercial uses, but also for what it brings to the table in terms of the environment. It’s the fastest growing plant on the planet — able to reach commercial viability as a food source in less than a year — and is a wonderful alternative to the type of timber and biomass that usually takes between 20 and 50 years to grow and reach maturity. Bamboo also releases more oxygen into the atmosphere than any other plant species, given the respective timescales.”

Crates continued, “Its description as the ‘miracle plant’ is appropriate, in my opinion. We still needed to spend years researching and testing the species, to prove that it would work from a commercial aspect and on a commercial scale. The next, logical step was to develop large scale sustainable plantations that can produce an extraordinary range of end products.”

“We’ve done much the same with other species, and we believe that we have now developed an unbeatable business model for bamboo that fulfils all the criteria that we look for when we invest heavily in a sector. The only thing slowing us down,” Crates concluded, “is the multitude of end uses to which bamboo can be put. Food, biomass, charcoal, engineered construction boards, bio char, activated carbon, paper, luxury fabrics, tissue paper, flooring, kitchen and home appliances, bicycles, even luggage; these are just off the top of my head. The last three years spent evaluating the potential of bamboo and turning the remarkable plant into a commercial reality has been a fascinating and rewarding period for me.”

One of the biggest challenges for the APC Group team in its quest to secure a viable, commercial future for bamboo, has been to establish the best and most secure regions in which to develop and operate large scale plantations. Accessibility to important markets has been key, while soil and climatic conditions are also crucial.

Kenya, with its near perfect climate, rich agricultural land and established agricultural industry — not to mention the excellent logistical infrastructure — was the perfect choice.

Africa Plantation Capital's bamboo estate is located in the prime crop belt, close to the strategic port of Mombasa, Kenya.
Africa Plantation Capital’s bamboo estate is located in the prime crop belt, close to the strategic port of Mombasa, Kenya.

The group has now established Africa Plantation Capital, and secured the purchase of land for its initial development in Kenya.

“We have been involved in various agricultural projects in Africa for a number of years,” said Crates, “but this is the first time we have actually invested in our own land. We are very excited to be developing the sustainable bamboo industry in Africa, starting our operations in Kenya under Africa Plantation Capital, and we see huge potential for the country and the continent. This venture represents an initial investment into Kenya of aroundUS$30 million in the first 1,000 acres and its associated infrastructure.”

As a further part of the group’s commitment to securing innovative, sustainable, commercial solutions and new technologies, the group is supporting Boo‐Tex Industries, who, as well as developing a new range of luxury bamboo fabrics for the fashion and sportswear industries, is also supporting a project to build the world’s first fully sustainable supercar. Codenamed the ‘ECOO7’, the car is being built using next generation technologies including a monocoque chassis made from engineered bamboo fibre, with the entire car body and framework made from the same bamboo fibre composites. Bamboo has a tensile strength that is three times stronger than steel; doesn’t rust, and is lighter than carbon fibre. This makes it an ideal solution for the global car industry, and it would be no surprise to see James Bond driving a car of this ilk in the next instalment of the universally recognised film franchise.

With a global plantation footprint now covering Asia, Africa and the United States of America, it’s clear that the APC Group and its local companies (Asia Plantation Capital, Africa Plantation Capital and America Plantation Capital) are now firmly established as major players in the industry. The group is now all set to dominate the bamboo industry as a whole, and take its place as a preeminent, vertically integrated grower, manufacturer and distributor of bamboo end products.

Key Takeaways from PR Newswire’s Media Coffee Event: Delivering Experience and Partaking in Rich Dialogues are Essential to Audience Engagement

leave a comment »

SINGAPORE,  /PRNewswire/ — PR Newswire held its first 2016 Media Coffee event on April 28 in Singapore. With the topic “Emerging Trends in SEA: How Best to Engage and Communicate with Your Audiences, the event examined ways that communications professionals and marketers can improve on their storytelling efforts for both digital and traditional media. It was attended by more than 100 marketers and communicators who underwent a valuable sharing session with Karen Lim, acting editor of AsiaOne, and Michelle Martin, radio broadcaster at Mediacorp Pte Ltd. Both speakers shared insights on strategizing content to engage target audiences and pitching media with relevant content that resonates with their audience. In an effort to centralize all the online discussions around the topics presented, an event hashtag #MediaCoffeeSG was created for the first time for attendees to interact with each other and share comments on Twitter.

Deliver an Experience to the Readers

With the influx of content publications that are feeding readers with new content on a daily basis, content marketers need to know how to present content that stands out from the rest. Karen Lim kicked off the event by providing an overview of how a typical newsroom creates and presents content to its readers.

Some of Lim’s key highlights of the presentation include:

  • The content producer is usually a multitasker, who is involved in organizing events and workshops, conducting customer research and creating visually compelling content to engage readers.
  • Infographics, photo galleries, videos, graphics, charts, social media posts, polls and quizzes help to engage readers and allow them to better understand the story.
  • Editors are now breaking away from traditional storytelling by delivering real-life experiences, for example, creating viral videos of them skydiving for the first time or conducting online debates.
  • As technology is constantly evolving, content marketers should constantly experiment with different ways to present their content.

Radio Rests on the Fundamentals of Rich Dialogues

Michelle Martin shared what it takes to put together a great radio talk show. Her key highlights include:

  • Radio talk shows rely heavily on recursive dialogues. Like any kinds of media, the radio landscape is also changing rapidly and increasingly becoming more social. However, in terms of news coverage, pitching to radio is no different from other media. The fundamental question of “why should the people care” still needs to be answered.
  • Technology has impacted the way radio producers review pitches. Key considerations include the ability to translate into other content formats, such as video or whether it is shareable on social media.
  • Tips to ensure that journalists read the press releases that are emailed to them include using words such as “exclusive” in the subject heading, and personalize the email to each and every journalist with his or her name.

Ultimate Heights: #project360 Conquers Mount Everest

SEON, Switzerland and KATHMANDU, Nepal /PRNewswire/ —

First Documentation of the South route with a 360° camera for Mammut’s #project360.

– Cross reference: Picture is available at AP Images ( –

A new milestone in virtual mountaineering was celebrated, as the two Nepalese mountain guides Lakpa Sherpa andPemba Rinji Sherpa with the support of their colleagues Ang Kaji Sherpa and Kusang Sherpa became the first men in the world to document the whole South route to the summit of Mount Everest with a 360° camera rig for Mammuts #project360. The full route is now online and can be seen at

(Photo: )

(Photo: )

The Everest expedition was spearheaded by virtual reality expert and technical director of the project, Matthias Taugwalder. He initiated the #project360 with mountain sports brand Mammut in collaboration with Heye Grid two years ago. “#project360 started out when we captured the full ascent of the Eiger North face for the first time. For that, we developed a special camera system with a backpack and a cube of six Go Pro cameras that record 360 images and videos in regular intervals. Since then we have captured more than 40 routes in the Alps and worldwide and now Mount Everest is the highlight of this project.”

For Mammut it was clear from the beginning that Sherpas would be the only appropriate candidates for this challenging summit endeavor. Lakpa Sherpa, the lead guide of the #project360 Everest expedition, underlined that he was proud to carry one of the cameras to the roof of the world. “I feel lucky to join this great project because it shows both the beauty and dangers of climbing Mount Everest.” For the climb he roped up with mountain guide colleague Pempa Rinji Sherpa. Two experienced Sherpas and climbers, Kusang Sherpa and Ang Kaji Sherpa, supported them on their ascent to the top.

The four Sherpas climbed from Basecamp at 5380 meters of altitude to the summit at 8848 meters, passing all iconic route highlights: through the unpredictable, constantly moving Khumbu Icefall, the Western Cwm that is notorious for its changeable weather conditions, up through the steep, icy Lhotse Face, reaching the summit by passing the technical cruxes of Yellow Band, Geneva Spur and the infamous Hillary Step.

After many days of acclimatizing and climbing Lakpa Sherpa, Pemba Rinji Sherpa, Kusang Sherpa and Ang Kaji Sherpa reached the summit and became the first mountaineers that managed to capture the whole route to the summit of Mount Everest with a 360° camera rig.

A personal success for the committed Sherpa team and the virtual mountaineering highlight to Mammut’s #project360.

DARMSTADT, Germany /PRNewswire/ —

The information contained in this release is not appropriate for audiences in the USA and Canada.

  • International survey reveals the remaining need for raising awareness about thyroid disorders
  • International awareness campaign tackles the problem of untreated thyroid disorders in children by urging parents to catch the butterflies and spot the symptoms of thyroid disorder

Merck, a leading science and technology company, today announced its support of the 8th International Thyroid Awareness Week (ITAW) May 23 to 29, 2016. This year’s ITAW campaign addresses undiagnosed or untreated thyroid disorders in the millions of children across the world, who could be unknowingly living with the conditions.[1],[2],[3] A recent international survey commissioned by Merck revealed that 84% of mothers could not correctly identify the most common symptoms of thyroid disorders which, if left untreated, can have a detrimental effect on a child’s growth, brain development and general well-being.[4],[5],[6]

Supported by Merck in partnership with Thyroid Federation International (TFI), ITAW 2016 is titled Catching the butterflies: spotting the symptoms of thyroid disorders in children‘. The aim of the campaign is to help parents recognize the most common symptoms of thyroid disorders by bringing them to life through two ‘Thyroid Butterfly’ characters:

Hypo, a slow growing, tired and sluggish blue butterfly representing the symptoms of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland).

Hyper, a thin, overly active, fidgety pink butterfly, representing the symptoms of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland).

Simon Sturge, Chief Operating Officer at Merck’s Biopharma business said: “Merck is delighted to once again partner with TFI for International Thyroid Awareness Week 2016. Together we are working to ensure that the right information is available in a format that is easy for parents to digest, and ultimately that children who display the symptoms get tested. If parents suspect their child is suffering of a thyroid disorder, they should visit a physician and ask for their child to be screened with a simple blood test.”

Campaign materials can be accessed via the updated ITAW website (at to provide information on thyroid disorders in children. Available materials include a brochure for parents, an interactive quiz to test their knowledge and a storybook to tell the tale of Hypo and Hyper.

Ashok Bhaseen, President of TFI, said: “We’re really proud to have created Hypo and Hyper, to facilitate education around thyroid disorders in a way that resonates with children and their parents. Although thyroid disorders in children are relatively rare, the condition can be very serious if it is allowed to develop unchecked. Whereas in the hands of a healthcare professional thyroid disease can be managed.”

The importance of raising awareness of childhood thyroid disorders among mothers was recently reinforced by results of an international survey commissioned by Merck. Data from 1,600 mothers in 16 countries revealed gaps in awareness in three key areas: testing for thyroid disorders, knowledge of the most common symptoms, and communication between mothers and their child’s physician.

Key findings from the survey show that almost two-thirds (63%) of all mothers surveyed said that their child had not been tested for a thyroid disorder, rising to 85% among mothers who had no family history of the conditions.[4] Most mothers were not aware of the symptoms of thyroid disorders, with an average of 84% of those surveyed unable to identify the most common symptoms of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.[4]

When presented with a list of the most common symptoms, an average of one in five mothers (20%) reported spotting these in their child.[4] However, almost half of the mothers that spotted these symptoms (49%) did not discuss them with a physician.[4]

Overall, almost two thirds (58%) of mothers surveyed said that they had not spoken to a physician about thyroid disorders.[4] This percentage rose steeply to 84% among the mothers who had no family history of thyroid disorders.[4]

ITAW is now an established and highly regarded global awareness campaign endorsed by the American Thyroid Association (ATA), the European Thyroid Association (ETA), and the Chinese Society of Endocrinology (CSE). For more information visit the ITAW website,

About thyroid disorders in children

The thyroid gland plays an important role in regulating a child’s metabolism and is essential for brain development and growth.[7],[8] The thyroid gland also helps to maintain vital functions of their body such as breathing, circulation and digestion and ensures all organs in their body function properly.[5],[9]

Sometimes the thyroid gland can stop working properly and become overactive, producing too many thyroid hormones (a condition known as hyperthyroidism), or underactive, producing too few thyroid hormones (a condition known as hypothyroidism).[5],[10]

Testing is simple and children benefit greatly from early diagnosis and treatment.[5],[11] Thyroid disorders can, in most cases, be successfully managed and with proper treatment, children should be able to control the symptoms and lead normal, healthy lives.[7],[11],[12]

How common are thyroid disorders in children?

  • Congenital hypothyroidism (present from birth) occurs in about 1 in every 2,000 – 4,000 babies[1]
  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the most common cause of acquired hypothyroidism in children affects 1% – 2% of adolescents globally[3]
  • Hyperthyroidism occurs in 8 of every 1,000,000 children less than 15 years old and in one in every 1,000,000 children less than 4 years old[2]

About the international survey

The survey was commissioned by Merck in February 2016 to identify mothers’ awareness and understanding of thyroid disorders in children. 100 mothers per country were surveyed by Opinion Health, a market research company, across 16 countries. The total sample was 1,600 mothers.

The sample consisted exclusively of mothers above 18 years, with children aged 0-15. The countries covered by the survey are below:

Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Turkey, Russia

South East Asia

Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore

Central/South America

Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico

Middle East

Saudi Arabia

South Africa

About Thyroid Federation International (TFI)

Thyroid Federation International first convened in Toronto at the 11th International Thyroid Congress in September 1995. Diana Meltzer Abramsky, who in 1980 founded the Thyroid Foundation of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, first advocated the vision of a world thyroid patient organization to deal with the problems of thyroid disease in a global perspective. Since then the Federation has grown to include thyroid organizations in many parts of the world, including Europe, North and South America, Australia and Japan. TFI is an independent, worldwide network of patient-support organizations. The Federation works together for the benefit of those affected by thyroid disorders by providing information and raising awareness, by encouraging and assisting the formation of patient-oriented groups, and by working closely with the medical professions. TFI has a Medical Advisory Board, which consists of some of the most eminent thyroid specialists in the world. For more information, please visit
