The pioneering system allows customers to enjoy the benefits of automation solution without the need for significant capital investment. The technological enhancement uses 130 robotic shuttles to pick and store products from 72,000 locations spread across 26 levels, improving picking efficiency by 20% and utilizing 40% less space than conventional warehousing operations.

This is the first of its kind deployed by DHL globally and creates a model for the future of warehousing in land-scarce countries and dense cities where land availability is limited and expensive.

“As an organization, our spirit thrives on a hunger for new knowledge and innovations that we can bring to customers to meet the challenges of Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution.  We see the Asian region as a swift adopter of technologies for enhanced productivity and efficiency. By 2020, Asia will constitute 30% of our total revenue. Facilities like the Advanced Regional Center offer a ready model of innovations that reduce complexity, improve accuracy and maximize opportunities for productivity gains,” said Dr. Frank Appel, Chief Executive Officer, Deutsche Post DHL Group.

Co-located within the ARC is the DHL Asia Pacific Innovation Center (APIC), DHL’s first innovation center outside ofGermany and a joint development with the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). Launched in 2015, APIC is the first dedicated center for innovative logistics services in the Asia Pacific region and showcases futuristic technologies.

“We are witnessing a pivotal chapter in the transformation of the Singapore logistics industry, as these best-in-class supply chain practices exemplified by DHL’s Advanced Regional Center start to take off in Singapore. DHL’s decision to locate their first innovation center outside of Germany in Singapore is another testimony to Singapore’s commitment to promote supply chain innovation. It is also a vote of confidence that Singapore is well-placed to support companies in their efforts to explore and create new businesses here to serve Asia. These developments are significant milestones in DHL’s partnership with Singapore,” said Mr Kelvin Wong, Assistant Managing Director of the Singapore Economic Development Board.

Singapore: A Base for Regional Logistics Hubs

As a multi-customer facility, the Advanced Regional Center also offers bespoke solutions to cater to specific industry needs. For example, the facility boasts clean rooms for Life Sciences & Healthcare businesses, specialized infrastructure for aerospace operations and customized storage solutions for managing service parts for technology customers.

Purpose-built to industry-leading standards, the ARC facility has been awarded ‘gold status’ for its energy and environmental design. The company has also implemented robust security measures that are in accordance with global TAPA standards.

“We’ve seen swift take up from multinational companies using the Advanced Regional Center (ARC) as their regional or global logistics hub. It also includes a multi-customer automated solution – solutions like this have previously shown within DHL to provide a space optimization of up to 40% and substantial productivity improvements, and are especially useful for customers with high value, fast moving goods which need to be processed in high volumes on a daily basis, ensuring speed, accuracy and security. By providing this solution in a multi-customer environment, it uniquely opens these types of solutions and advantages to a wider customer base. The system is modular in design and can be expanded depending on customer needs,” said Oscar de Bok, Chief Executive Officer, Asia Pacific, DHL Supply Chain.

“The ARC is at the cutting-edge of supply chain innovation and employs in excess of 1,000 colleagues across the Country Office, Operations and Regional Office. In addition, we also operate an award-winning regional contact center which operates 24 hours every day, offering customer support in 10 languages. When advanced technology meets great customer service, that’s the winning formula we bring to our customers,” said Jason Goh, Managing Director,Singapore, DHL Supply Chain.

Infoteria to Partner with Dragonfly Fintech

leave a comment »

-Simplifying solution implementation and user operation through integrated products

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — Infoteria Corporation (IC), a company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and Singapore Fintech startup, Dragonfly Fintech (DF), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to pursue a partnership to develop solutions that will enhance payment, clearing and settlement solutions for the financial services industry. The key area for collaboration will be in applying IC’s ASTERIA middleware product to create a more user friendly abstraction of DF’s Transaction Ecosystem Platform Solution (TEPS).

IC’s ASTERIA is an optimum product for non-coding development for users in a wide array of industries. It is designed with the broadest range of users in mind, and is not limited to expert coders. Data flows can be created with drag and drop icons and property settings so that existing databases, file systems, a variety of business operation systems, and each category of Cloud services can be easily integrated and connected. Installation periods can be greatly shortened, thanks to a non-coding environment in which realistic, operational processes can be created with designs used in typical development and work flows similar to actual practice. These strengths have won ASTERIA No. 1 market share in Japan as a data integration middleware.

DF’s TEPS is a pioneering leading edge private blockchain solution that runs on the NEM powered, Mijin fast transaction engine. The key differentiator of the NEM Blockchain solution as opposed to others is that it is specifically tailored for the financial industry. It does not require these financial institutions to do massive changes to their core banking system. As a platform, TEPS is an enabler that allows all ecosystem players such as financial institutions, service providers, merchants and businesses, and end users to make use of as a new means of payment, clearing, and settlement. Existing clearing and settlement solutions rely on a settlement institution to provide the trust for settlement. Blockchain technology is trust-less. It takes away much of traditional method of clearing and settlement, and cut short the entire complicated process. Further, it is a disruptor in that, it changes the landscape for payment, clearing and settlement into a B2B2C2C solution, covering the entire spectrum of Digital Money transaction.

The proposed partnership will allow TEPS to fast track the development of value added Business Intelligence (BI) analysis, operation automation, as well as using it as a tool for Anti-Money Laundering (AML) analytics for a holistic offering. It takes away the need to understand the steep learning curve of the blockchain technology and jumpstart the use and integration of TEPS into core banking systems.

About Dragonfly Fintech

Dragonfly Fintech Pte Ltd, is a Singapore start-up financial technology company. The founder is Lon Wong, a serial technopreneur, and inventor of a patent-pending fintech business method. Lon Wong is a core team member of the open source NEM Blockchain technology project initiative.

About Infoteria Corporation

Infoteria Corporation was established in 1998 by President and CEO Yoichiro Hirano and Executive Vice President and CTO Yoshiyuki Kitahara. Back in 1998, the internet use among enterprises had just begun to take off. Mr. Hirano and Mr. Kitahara envisioned a future in which businesses would leverage the internet and related technologies to connect systems inside and outside the company and accomplish various work-related tasks. The new XML technology had just been created in 1998 as a common computer language for these tasks, and these two men’s belief in the huge possibilities of XML is the reason they started Infoteria.

TOKYO /PRNewswire/ — Sea Japan, the flagship event for Japan’s maritime industry, was held on 13-15 April 2016 at Tokyo Big Sight exhibition centre with the highest ever number of exhibiting companies and visitors. Despite the weak state of global shipping markets, the mood in the exhibition halls was vibrant with positive sentiment. Japanese shipyards and marine equipment manufacturers are sitting on strong order-books and are not suffering the financial turmoil of their counterparts in China and Korea.

Japanese shipbuilders and marine equipment makers are at the forefront of commercializing smart ship technologies — ships that are highly fuel efficient and environmentally friendly. These and other advanced technologies were on display in the Japanese Maritime Industry Cluster pavilion in the center of the exhibition.

A total of 550 companies from 28 countries exhibited in the exhibition, an increase of 12% from the last edition and the highest number ever. In addition to a large Japan pavilion there were group pavilions from Germany,Denmark, Holland, Korea and China. Exhibits included marine engines, electronics and communications systems, safety equipment and environmental protection equipment.

Running in parallel with the exhibition was a full programme of conferences and seminars covering shipping market analysis, technological development, emission reduction and offshore and deep sea exploration. Keynote speakers included Mr. Tadaaki Naito, President of NYK Line, Japan’s largest shipping company, and Ms Dilek Ayhan, Vice Minister of the Norwegian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries.

Christopher Eve, Managing Director of UBM Japan, the organizer of the exhibition, commented, “The positive mood at this year’s Sea Japan reflects the continued confidence of Japan’s maritime industries. Japanese shipbuilders offer the highest quality and most technologically advanced ships in the world. This allows them to remain competitive even in difficult market conditions.”

Mr. Shigeru Murayama, Chairman of the Shipbuilders’ Association of Japan, remarked, “the holding of Sea Japan helps to stimulate discussion of the topic of protection of the global environment and serves as a platform for understanding the important contribution that Japanese shipbuilders are making with their cutting-edge technologies.”

APAC Companies May Face Physical, Reputational or Financial Damage Due to Inadequate Employee Screening

leave a comment »

-Findings from 2016 HireRight APAC Employment Screening Benchmark Report

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — HireRight, a leading provider of global employment background checks, today released findings from its 2016 HireRight APAC Employment Screening Benchmark Report, which drew attention to risks companies may face if they do not conduct adequate screening of candidates or rescreen existing employees.

More than half (59%) of the organisations surveyed have uncovered discrepancies throughout their employee screening process that would otherwise have been missed. Commonly uncovered problems include inflating salaries and job titles, falsifying educational qualifications and making up reasons for resignations.

Importance of Rescreening Existing Employees

Most companies might assume background screening is only necessary for new hires. However, the report found that one of the most overlooked areas was rescreening of existing employees with four out of five (80%) companies stating they do not rescreen employees at promotion.

Some companies only initiate screening for senior employees which means people who work their way up the ladder might move into leadership positions without ever being background checked.

Steve Girdler, Managing Director of APAC and EMEA, HireRight, said, “Conducting background checks on candidates might be a norm for most organisations – but as they continue to gain increased access to talent pools across the world, potential threats grow too, making companies that much more susceptible to hiring risks and vulnerabilities. These threats appear both in terms of the authenticity of candidates and the potential threat they pose to a company’s employees, customers, intellectual property, and reputation.”

Screening International Employees

Businesses are embracing the access to an enlarged talent pool that is provided by a progressively connected world, in light of the recent establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which aims to reduce business costs and allow for seamless travel within the 10-country grouping, increasing the scale of talent exchanges within the region.

Specifically to Singapore, almost one in four (23.9%) of the Professional, Managerial, Executive and Technical (PMET) workforce in 2015 were foreigners, according to the Ministry of Manpower1.

However, despite this global workforce, less than half of organisations (42%) screen international candidates. This can pose a gap in an employer’s screening program as international moves can be a means by which candidates may try to escape negative records.

In addition, for locals who have been studying or working overseas before returning to their home country to work, only 29% of companies screen their international backgrounds, which can pose risks to organisations.

Additional Findings

  • Nearly two thirds (63%) of companies consider hiring, retaining and developing talent one of their most significant business challenges.
  • One in three (33%) of companies consider the use of technology and analytics to be one of their greatest challenges.

The 2016 HireRight APAC Employment Screening Benchmark Report is based on surveys conducted with more than 3,000 human resources, recruiting, compliance, and management professionals worldwide, with a sample size of close to 500 in Asia Pacific, to provide a view of the current hiring landscape, indicate market trends, and identify common gaps in employers’ screening and hiring processes. The full report can be downloaded from the HireRight APAC website here.

Taipei City invites travelers and businesses alike to become their own tour guides with a bilingual, user-friendly app launched in April 2016 to celebrate the opening of the Creative Expo Taiwan, the island’s largest lifestyle design trade show.

Part of an inaugural CET Fringe Shops program, the travel app interprets city neighborhoods as experiential spaces for creativity, and highlights exceptional design and innovation around the city. With 250 stores, cafes, restaurants, and cultural centers at their fingertips, visitors will discover first-hand why Taipei has been named World Design Capital 2016.

The app guides people through the neighborhoods that surround the three major exhibition sites of the 2016 edition of Creative Expo Taiwan, which officially opens on Wednesday, April 20. These neighborhoods includeSongshan Cultural and Creative Park, Huashan 1914 Creative Park, and the Expo Dome. The app features several useful functions to help travelers design their own tours, including news, maps, visitor information, events, and a list of hand-picked Fringe Shops.

Pioneering Design at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park

Renowned for promoting pioneering Taiwanese design, Songshan Cultural and Creative Park is a fitting home for the Taiwan Design Museum, which holds exhibitions of local and international design year round. Using the app’s map function, travelers can quickly locate must-see homegrown design stores in the vicinity, such as minimalist furniture showroom Mountain Living, handmade shoe shop O’Ringo, eyewear brand Classico, and a host of fashion labels such as Just In Case, Groovy Store, and A Room Model.

Inspiring Craft at Huashan 1914 Creative Park

The successful urban regeneration project that transformed an abandoned wine-making warehouse into today’s Huashan 1914 Creative Park has resulted in an upwelling of creative projects and workshops in and around the venue. Visitors can wander through the neighborhood and visit the iconic 24-hour Eslite Spectrum Bookstore, which holds much more than books within its cavernous interior. Others may prefer to rummage through the treasure trove of magazines, creative Taiwanese products, and vintage memorabilia at VVG Thinking, or the stylish contemporary art, fashion, and lifestyle brands on display at Mano Select Shop.

Creative License at Expo Dome

The Expo Dome, situated among some of Taipei’s most important art galleries and museums, will play host to theImages of Art display, exhibiting culturally significant art pieces from such institutions as the National Palace Museum and the National Museum of History. Visitors can enjoy a visit to the nearby Taipei Fine Arts Museum,a shining example of contemporary museum architecture. Next door to the Expo Dome, MAJI Square is a vibrant market of vintage and contemporary fashion and accessories, while farther afield, Everyday Ware flaunts beautifully designed homeware.

“This is the first time Taipei City has harnessed the power of modern technology to provide an immersive experience of the city’s lifestyle design. We hope that travelers from near and far will be inspired, and leave with a deeper understanding of innovative Taipei design and Taiwanese culture,” says Commissioner Pei-ni Beatrice Hsieh of the Department of Cultural Affairs (Taipei City).

Visitors to Taipei can download the app here: https://goo.gl/MQGz62 (iOS) and https://goo.gl/4YkVjc (Android). For more information on CET Fringe Shops, go to: http://cetmap.tw/. Taipei City Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs has also launched two urban design projects that visitors to the city might notice during their travels.

  • In collaboration with City Yeast, a local social enterprise organization, the New Color for Transformer Boxes project (part of the wider Urban Landscape Planning project) will make Taipei’s electrical transformer boxes, cycling paths, and public squares more aesthetically and environmentally appealing. With the support of Taipei Power Company, to date 62 pairs of transformer boxes along five major roads have been earmarked for a revamp. The public is encouraged to help select final color schemes via the official Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/taipeiworlddesigncapital/.
  • The Small Shop Signboard Manufacturer–organized in collaboration with Taipei-based culture promotion brand Archicake–is another project that connects small, family run businesses with designers. Designers consult with business owners to create signboards that highlight their shops’ unique character. Running since 2013, the project will this year focus on the creation of signboards for traditional market stalls in Taipei; by the end of 2016, the project hopes to celebrate the creation of the 100th signboard.

The Creative Expo Taiwan (CET) has been organized by the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan and run by the Taiwan Design Center since 2010. CET 2016 operates under the theme “Savoring the Rich Eastern Culture” and the 2015-2017 core concept “The City is the Exhibition; the Exhibition Displays Life,” values that feed into the World Design Capital Taipei 2016’s focus on “Adaptive City–Design in Motion.” For more information, including dates, locations, and special events, go to: https://creativexpo.tw/en/.

The report, entitled Asia Pacific Online Video Distribution, covers 14 Asia Pacific markets, tracking the growth of advertising and subscription-based online video, as well as mobile and fixed broadband networks. Commenting on the report findings, MPA executive director Vivek Couto said:

“The growth of broadband, combined with slow but progressive change in content licensing, is driving demand for online video services. However, the distribution of driver local content online remains modest, especially outside of China, India and Korea. This is evident in Southeast Asia, where broadband penetration is growing rapidly but from a low base in most markets Telecom operators in these markets are investing in broadband networks and integrating with subscription-based online video platforms to help drive subscriptions. This allows online video operators to utilize carrier billing, overcoming market limitations in payment infrastructure. It’s a bet to drive online video consumption in the short term and ARPUs in the long term.”

Online video advertising accounted for less than 15% of Asia Pacific digital ad spend in 2015. This share will grow to 22% by 2021. Online video ad sales will reach approximately US$22 billion by 2021 versus US$9 billionin 2016, a 19% CAGR. China will represent more than 70% of the online video advertising pie by 2021.

In the online subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) segment, MPA expects total paying customers to grow from 177 million by 2016 to 360 million by 2021, with China contributing the majority. SVOD revenue will reach US$13 billion by 2021, a 28% CAGR from US$3.7 billion in 2016. China will again contribute the majority, representing more than 80% by 2021. The Southeast Asia SVOD opportunity will grow rapidly but from a low base, representing about US$200 million in revenue by 2021.

Asia Pacific fixed broadband subs will reach 345 million in 2016, and grow to 425 million by 2021. Average broadband household penetration will grow from 35% in 2016 to 41% in 2021. Mobile broadband will reach 79% of the Asia Pacific population by 2021, versus 46% in 2016.
