DHL Redefines Logistics with Opening of the S$160 million Advanced Regional Center

SINGAPORE  /PRNewswire/ — DHL Supply Chain, the global market leader for contract logistics solutions, today launched its Advanced Regional Center (ARC) in Singapore. Built at an investment of more than S$160 million[1], the new 90,000 sqm facility features an S$18.8 million multi-customer automation system featuring advanced robotics.

The pioneering system allows customers to enjoy the benefits of automation solution without the need for significant capital investment. The technological enhancement uses 130 robotic shuttles to pick and store products from 72,000 locations spread across 26 levels, improving picking efficiency by 20% and utilizing 40% less space than conventional warehousing operations.

This is the first of its kind deployed by DHL globally and creates a model for the future of warehousing in land-scarce countries and dense cities where land availability is limited and expensive.

Co-located within the ARC is the DHL Asia Pacific Innovation Center (APIC), DHL’s first innovation center outside ofGermany and a joint development with the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). Launched in 2015, APIC is the first dedicated center for innovative logistics services in the Asia Pacific region and showcases futuristic technologies.

As a multi-customer facility, the Advanced Regional Center also offers bespoke solutions to cater to specific industry needs. For example, the facility boasts clean rooms for Life Sciences & Healthcare businesses, specialized infrastructure for aerospace operations and customized storage solutions for managing service parts for technology customers.

Purpose-built to industry-leading standards, the ARC facility has been awarded ‘gold status’ for its energy and environmental design. The company has also implemented robust security measures that are in accordance with global TAPA standards.

Largest Ever Sea Japan Reflects Strength of Japanese Shipbuilding Industry

TOKYO /PRNewswire/ — Sea Japan, the flagship event for Japan’s maritime industry, was held on 13-15 April 2016 at Tokyo Big Sight exhibition centre with the highest ever number of exhibiting companies and visitors. Despite the weak state of global shipping markets, the mood in the exhibition halls was vibrant with positive sentiment. Japanese shipyards and marine equipment manufacturers are sitting on strong order-books and are not suffering the financial turmoil of their counterparts in China and Korea.

Japanese shipbuilders and marine equipment makers are at the forefront of commercializing smart ship technologies — ships that are highly fuel efficient and environmentally friendly. A total of 550 companies from 28 countries exhibited in the exhibition, an increase of 12% from the last edition and the highest number ever. APAC Companies May Face Physical, Reputational or Financial Damage Due to Inadequate Employee Screening

-Findings from 2016 HireRight APAC Employment Screening Benchmark Report

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — HireRight, a leading provider of global employment background checks, today released findings from its 2016 HireRight APAC Employment Screening Benchmark Report, which drew attention to risks companies may face if they do not conduct adequate screening of candidates or rescreen existing employees.

More than half (59%) of the organisations surveyed have uncovered discrepancies throughout their employee screening process that would otherwise have been missed. Commonly uncovered problems include inflating salaries and job titles, falsifying educational qualifications and making up reasons for resignations.

Importance of Rescreening Existing Employees

Most companies might assume background screening is only necessary for new hires. However, the report found that one of the most overlooked areas was rescreening of existing employees with four out of five (80%) companies stating they do not rescreen employees at promotion.

Some companies only initiate screening for senior employees which means people who work their way up the ladder might move into leadership positions without ever being background checked.

Steve Girdler, Managing Director of APAC and EMEA, HireRight, said, “Conducting background checks on candidates might be a norm for most organisations – but as they continue to gain increased access to talent pools across the world, potential threats grow too, making companies that much more susceptible to hiring risks and vulnerabilities. Screening International Employees

Businesses are embracing the access to an enlarged talent pool that is provided by a progressively connected world, in light of the recent establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which aims to reduce business costs and allow for seamless travel within the 10-country grouping, increasing the scale of talent exchanges within the region.

Specifically to Singapore, almost one in four (23.9%) of the Professional, Managerial, Executive and Technical (PMET) workforce in 2015 were foreigners, according to the Ministry of Manpower1.

However, despite this global workforce, less than half of organisations (42%) screen international candidates. This can pose a gap in an employer’s screening program as international moves can be a means by which candidates may try to escape negative records.

In addition, for locals who have been studying or working overseas before returning to their home country to work, only 29% of companies screen their international backgrounds, which can pose risks to organisations.

Additional Findings

  • Nearly two thirds (63%) of companies consider hiring, retaining and developing talent one of their most significant business challenges.
  • One in three (33%) of companies consider the use of technology and analytics to be one of their greatest challenges.

Taipei City Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs has also launched two urban design projects that visitors to the city might notice during their travels.

  • The Small Shop Signboard Manufacturer–organized in collaboration with Taipei-based culture promotion brand Archicake–is another project that connects small, family run businesses with designers. Designers consult with business owners to create signboards that highlight their shops’ unique character. Running since 2013, the project will this year focus on the creation of signboards for traditional market stalls in Taipei; by the end of 2016, the project hopes to celebrate the creation of the 100th signboard.

Asia Pacific Online Video Opportunity Forecast at US$35 Billion by 2021

HONG KONG, SINGAPORE and MUMBAI /PRNewswire/ — According to a new report published today by Media Partners Asia (MPA), Asia Pacific online video revenue is expected to reach US$35 billion by 2021, an average annual growth of 22% from US$13 billion in 2016. China will remain the largest market, accounting for 76% of Asia Pacific online video revenue by 2021. Japan, Australia, Korea and India will also be significant, in aggregate accounting for 17% of regional online video revenue by 2021.

The report, entitled Asia Pacific Online Video Distribution, covers 14 Asia Pacific markets, tracking the growth of advertising and subscription-based online video, as well as mobile and fixed broadband networks. Commenting on the report findings, MPA executive director Vivek Couto said:

“The growth of broadband, combined with slow but progressive change in content licensing, is driving demand for online video services. However, the distribution of driver local content online remains modest, especially outside of China, India and Korea. This is evident in Southeast Asia, where broadband penetration is growing rapidly but from a low base in most markets Telecom operators in these markets are investing in broadband networks and integrating with subscription-based online video platforms to help drive subscriptions. This allows online video operators to utilize carrier billing, overcoming market limitations in payment infrastructure. It’s a bet to drive online video consumption in the short term and ARPUs in the long term.”

Online video advertising accounted for less than 15% of Asia Pacific digital ad spend in 2015. This share will grow to 22% by 2021. Online video ad sales will reach approximately US$22 billion by 2021 versus US$9 billionin 2016, a 19% CAGR. China will represent more than 70% of the online video advertising pie by 2021.

In the online subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) segment, MPA expects total paying customers to grow from 177 million by 2016 to 360 million by 2021, with China contributing the majority. SVOD revenue will reach US$13 billion by 2021, a 28% CAGR from US$3.7 billion in 2016. China will again contribute the majority, representing more than 80% by 2021. The Southeast Asia SVOD opportunity will grow rapidly but from a low base, representing about US$200 million in revenue by 2021.

Asia Pacific fixed broadband subs will reach 345 million in 2016, and grow to 425 million by 2021. Average broadband household penetration will grow from 35% in 2016 to 41% in 2021. Mobile broadband will reach 79% of the Asia Pacific population by 2021, versus 46% in 2016.
