USAID Joins Nespresso and TechnoServe to Support South Sudan’s Coffee Farmers

-$3.18 million investment will accelerate development of the country’s coffee market

NEW YORK /PRNewswire/ — Nespresso and TechnoServe, a development non-profit organization, are pleased to announce a new partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to strengthen efforts to rebuild the coffee industry in the new country of South Sudan and improve coffee farmer livelihoods. USAID will invest $3.18 million during three years in the project, which has already helped revive South Sudan’s coffee industry, diversify its export market and raise the household incomes of smallholder coffee farmers.


Since 2011, Nespresso and TechnoServe have worked directly with local farmers to revive high-quality coffee production in South Sudan, while developing commercial channels to enable its sale and export. Nespresso has already invested over $2.5 million in the project. The country’s coffee industry was decimated after years of civil war, and oil now comprises 99 percent of its exports.

To date, more than 700 farmers have been integrated into the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program, which provides support, training and technical assistance to improve sustainability and productivity, while maintaining the highest quality coffee. South Sudan’s first wet mills (equipment to process coffee cherries into coffee beans) have been established, and the first coffee export was sold as a Nespresso Limited Edition in Francelast year.

“This new partnership with USAID will be instrumental to accelerate the progress Nespresso and TechnoServe have already made, working directly with South Sudanese farmers,” said Jean-Marc Duvoisin, CEO of Nestlé Nespresso. “This funding injection will allow us to scale up the project and help an even greater number of farmers grow and sell high quality coffee for international export at a higher price, thus creating a better quality of life for farmers and their families.”

The poverty is reducing, and you will have a better life. So we advise that everyone should plant coffee for the future to uplift the nation.”

USAID’s contribution will help expand the existing initiative to support a thriving and inclusive coffee sector in South Sudan by increasing scale and ensuring lasting impact. The funding injection will also allow the program to be extended to new communities, allowing more farmers in South Sudan to benefit from the revival of South Sudan’scoffee industry.

The initiative aims to triple coffee incomes and improve household resilience. By 2019, the program will have trained 1,500 South Sudanese farmers, of whom at least 25 percent will be women, and helped establish nine cooperative-owned wet mills.

“In a severely conflict-affected country like South Sudan, it’s important that we invest in people to help improve livelihoods, reduce extreme poverty and give people hope about the future,” said USAID Assistant Administrator for Africa Linda Etim. “By helping expand the success that Nespresso and TechnoServe have already achieved in improving the livelihoods of South Sudan’s coffee farmers, USAID is planting seeds of hope at a very fragile and uncertain time for the people of South Sudan. We’re encouraged to see a company like Nespresso investing in long-term growth in South Sudan and look forward to working together to expand economic growth and opportunity in the country.”

Through its focus on improving smallholder livelihoods, this partnership also complements the goals of the U.S. Government’s global hunger and food security initiative, Feed the Future, helping to reduce poverty and malnutrition through agricultural development.

Nespresso has also launched its Nespresso Sustainability Innovation Fund, which has been established to facilitate investment from Nespresso in coffee origin revival and coffee supply chain resilience projects that go beyond the usual business operations of the company. Nespresso is committing an initial $10 million in specific innovative coffee value chain initiatives in the coming three years (2016-2018).

Merck and Sysmex Inostics Receive CE Mark Approval for Liquid Biopsy test for Colorectal Cancer Patients

Merck, a leading science and technology company, today announced that a new liquid biopsy RAS biomarker test, which they are co-developing and commercializing with Sysmex Inostics, has been granted CE Mark approval. This test will now be made widely accessible for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) in Europe, Asia andAustralia. The testing technology, OncoBEAM® RAS CRC assay, has been shown to have a similar performance to that of conventional tissue-based testing[13] and can be used to determine which patients would benefit from anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (anti-EGFR) therapies, such as Erbitux® (cetuximab), as demonstrated by recent data.[4][8]

The liquid biopsy RAS biomarker test is a comprehensive 34-mutation panel that is based on the BEAMing (Beads, Emulsion, Amplification and Magnetics) technology. The test only requires a small blood sample (10 ml), rather than a tissue biopsy, to determine the mutation status of tumors.[9] The test has the potential to provide mutation status results within days, which can help guide quicker treatment decisions.[9]

“As the first test center to use the liquid biopsy RAS biomarker testing technology we have seen firsthand how this technology has advanced treatment decision-making,” said Professor Josep Tabernero, Director Head of the Medical Oncology Department of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, Spain. “The speed at which the test results become available has helped us initiate effective treatments faster, which has led to improved patient outcomes.”

Merck and Sysmex Inostics entered into an agreement to co-develop and commercialize the liquid biopsy test onMay 19, 2014 and opened the first test center, for research use only, at the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology inBarcelona, Spain on February 20, 2015. Now with the CE Mark, the liquid biopsy RAS biomarker testing technology is expected to be widely implemented across Europe, Asia, Latin America and Australia by the end of 2016.

About Erbitux

Erbitux® is a highly active IgG1 monoclonal antibody targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). As a monoclonal antibody, the mode of action of Erbitux is distinct from standard non-selective chemotherapy treatments in that it specifically targets and binds to the EGFR. This binding inhibits the activation of the receptor and the subsequent signal-transduction pathway, which results in reducing both the invasion of normal tissues by tumor cells and the spread of tumors to new sites. It is also believed to inhibit the ability of tumor cells to repair the damage caused by chemotherapy and radiotherapy and to inhibit the formation of new blood vessels inside tumors, which appears to lead to an overall suppression of tumor growth.

GenieATM Chosen by a Tier-1 Service Provider in Europe for DDoS Attack Mitigation

TAIPEI, Taiwan /PRNewswire/ — Genie Networks, a technology leader in traffic visibility and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection, today announced a world-class telecommunications service provider in Europe has chosen Genie Networks’ GenieATM solution to strengthen its network security.

Several powerful DDoS cyberattacks were reported in Europe recently. The attacks caused not only websites and servers to become paralyzed but also noticeable effects on the regional Internet speed. Businesses and end users tend to hold their service providers responsible for it. So the striking rise in the frequency and size of DDoS attacks drove a top telecom in Europe to look for an effective solution to address the pressing DDoS challenge. After a careful and lengthy evaluation, the joint solution of Genie Networks and its technology partner was chosen for its robust features and ability in mitigating massive DDoS attacks.

The GenieATM deployment at the tier-1 telecom continuously monitors the network and detects network anomalies. Upon detection, GenieATM automatically triggers on-demand traffic scrubbing by diverting the anomaly traffic to a DDoS scrubbing platform provided by a Genie’s technology partner. The scrubbing platform then filters malicious traffic from the off-ramped traffic, and re-injects the cleaned traffic back to the original destinations. In this way, the attacks are mitigated with application layer precision with minimum impact to the legitimate user traffic, because only the suspicious traffic identified by GenieATM is rerouted. The detection and cleaning details are correlated and presented through GenieATM’s Web GUI, allowing a range of actions including initiating/stopping a mitigation action manually or performing real-time troubleshooting and incident forensics.
