There is a fresh market for novel business models such as over-the-top video services, business and home applications of broadband services, and machine to machine (M2M) and payment applications in mobile networks. In effect, operators are offering a combination of low-priced services for the untapped segments, and premium solutions for increasing the average revenue per user.

“The deployment of 3G, Long-Term Evolution and fiber-optics networks make available higher bandwidth and throughput, and open up markets for additional applications and services in the consumer and business segments,” said Frost & Sullivan Digital Transformation Industry Analyst Carina Gonçalves. “Besides, with the rise of small cable TV associations and Internet service providers, untapped markets such as Pay TV and broadband could also witness heated competition.”

On the flip side, the intense competition could diminish margins, as can the revised tariff regulations on the prices of traditional telecommunications services such as voice and basic connectivity. Furthermore, the high taxes on telecom services and spectrum, and costs limitations on broadband services can constrict the profits of operators.

The Government and the national telecommunications regulator, Anatel, play important roles in implementing and revising the National Broadband Plan and improving regulation policies as well as aggregating operators’ interactions and contributions. In order to stimulate broadband and connectivity services growth, the regulator must encourage infrastructure sharing, since there is not enough space for new transmission structures, especially in the metropolitan areas.

In the current scenario, telecommunications operators are investing heavily in the deployment of their own networks, which limits their ability to slash prices as their business plans restrict profitability.

“All fixed operators are focusing on enhancing data capacity and expanding geographical coverage of their networks to enrich quality of service and expedite return on investment in a progressively connected environment,” noted Gonçalves. “In this context, over-the-top services and Internet neutrality are becoming increasingly relevant and will be vital to the business plans of telecommunication service providers in Brazil.”

China’s Lubricants Industry Transitions to “New Normal”

HONG KONG /PRNewswire/ — After a decade of rapid growth, China, the world’s largest lubricants market and Asia’s growth engine, has started to slow down. “We expect a flat growth trajectory — 6.8% in 2016 versus 6.9% in 2015 — as China digests prior credit excesses and transitions to a new growth model,” says Jeff Ng, ASEAN economist at Standard Chartered Bank.

Chinese lubricating oil demand peaked in 2012, and in recent years has continued to grow but at a slower rate, as the speed of China’s economic growth has gradually declined, according to Nie ShiChun, deputy general manager for Sinopec Lubricant (Singapore) Pte Ltd.

As China’s economic model transitions to a “new normal,” lubricant industry profits will weaken, says Nie. “While well-established enterprises are expanding their market, small- to medium-sized enterprises are struggling to survive,” he says.

Western Union Responds with Support for Relief Efforts to the Victims of Super Cyclone Winston

SYDNEY /PRNewswire/ — The Western Union Company and The Western Union Foundation today jointly announced a multi-faceted response program that will provide support for disaster relief efforts that target the families and communities most affected by Cyclone Winston in Fiji Islands. The program includes grant funding from The Western Union Foundation and a consumer zero-fee* activation initiative, as well as Western Union employee and retail Agent giving elements.

International Consumer Activation

For the benefit of consumers sending money to family and loved ones in Fiji Islands, Western Union activated a zero-fee money transfer transaction program from participating Agent locations in the USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Isles, from March 1 through March 31, 2016. While a CAD$1 money transfer fee* for consumers sending money to the Fiji Islands from participating Agent locations in Canada was also activated for the same time period.

Reaching 184 mph, the strongest recorded storm to hit the southern hemisphere, Cyclone Winston lashed through the island nation of Fiji causing severe damage. The Category Five tropical cyclone made landfall onFebruary 20 killing at least 42 people and leaving more than 51,000 in shelters.** According to the Fiji Broadcasting System, the damage report includes the local schools which have suffered a minimum of US$2.3 million worth of damage.
