Senior Leaders Say Big Data, Misaligned Incentives and Bureaucracy Lead to Bad Decision Making

leave a comment »

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia /PRNewswire/ — Senior leaders are struggling to make the right decisions, with 72% of organisations admitting to at least one strategic initiative failing in the last three years because of flaws in their decision making process, according to a research from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA).  Information overload, excessive bureaucracy, lack of trust and incentives that are not aligned with goals were all cited as contributors to poor decision making in businesses globally.

The ‘Joining the Dots: Decision making for a new era’ report surveyed board-level executives at large organisations from 16 countries. It revealed that not only do executives admit to poor decision making, more than three quarters (80%) say flawed information has been used to make strategic decisions, with 42% admitting their organisation has lost competitive advantage because of slow decision making.

The top causes of poor decision making identified in the report are:

  • Information overload: 36% say their organisation is not coping with information overload, and 32% say big data has actually made things worse, while 37% say it has helped. For those that can gain greater mastery of big data, there is a significant opportunity to gain a competitive advantage. Among high performing organisations, 86% are already assessing the management information they need by focusing on the key value drivers of the business model.
  • Bureaucracy: Nearly a third, 29%, say the single biggest barrier to more effective decision making is coordination problems caused by organisational silos and bureaucracy.
  • Trust and collaboration: 43% say their level of trust in fellow executives needed improvement and 57% saymore active collaboration is required to improve decision making.
  • Incentive structures: 61% of bosses admit their organization’s incentive structures aren’t encouraging right decisions for short, medium and long-term value.

Charles Tilley, Chief Executive of CIMA, commented: “Organisations need to treat decision making as a business-critical process to be professionalised then continually improved. Leaders need to think in an integrated way, meaning to have a clear and defined business model and relate all decisions back to it; quickly gather andanalyze all relevant information from all parts of the business; and focus on key performance indicators rather than gut instincts or hearsay.”

Siam Piwat Introduces Revolutionary Retail Concept to Thailand – New ‘Siam Discovery’ Opening Q2/2016 As Thailand’s First Hybrid Retail Store

leave a comment »

— Invests US$112 million in stunning new building and interior by ‘nendo’
— Aims to reinforce position as ‘thought leader’ in retail development

BANGKOK  /PRNewswire/ – Siam Piwat Co., Ltd., the owner and operator of prestige retail developments such as Siam Paragon, Siam Center, Siam Discovery, and Paradise Park, as well as the joint venture partner of ICONSIAM, today, announced that it is introducing a revolutionary new retail concept toThailand with the opening of the new Siam Discovery retail destination in the second quarter of 2016, after aUS$112 million re-build.

Mrs. Chadatip Chutrakul, Chief Executive Officer of Siam Piwat Co., Ltd. said: “The new Siam Discovery is the first hybrid retail destination in Thailand. We have created a venue where thousands of lifestyle brands are brought together under a single universal concept that puts customers at the centre. That means everything presented at Siam Discovery is not organized by brand, or category, as in traditional retailing, but by visitors’ interests, because our purpose is no longer just to sell products but to provide an extraordinary and emotional experience that allows visitors to discover and express themselves.

“We then enhance that experience by adding a very strong story-telling component. As visitors move through the various parts of Siam Discovery, they are immersed in the intangibles of a brand and a category. They are also drawn into stories relevant to their interests, their beliefs, as well as trends, rather than just being presented a selection of products.

“These experiences are highly interactive and with lots of opportunities for visitors to personalize their purchases. We also empower visitors to make statements about their life preferences, whether it be about sustainability or a love of nature, and to support those preferences through their purchases, and through occasions to interact with like-minded people and communities. And then we further enhance those experiences through the power of the most advanced digital technology. It’s a totally new and an extraordinarily exciting way of presenting products and their associated lifestyles,” she said.

“Our role as a retailer has advanced to another level and become one of managing visitors’ experiences and emotions, rather than just one of managing products, categories and displays,” she said.

“We target all genders and age groups, and estimate doubling Siam Discovery’s per-square-metre sales within a year,” Mrs. Chutrakul said.

She added that over 5,000 international and local brands are offered, and include everyday products, sustainability products, trend products, as well as collaboration and limited edition collections.

Mr. Oki Sato, the founder of ‘nendo’ and one of the world’s top designers who was voted as among the ‘100 Most Respected Japanese’ by Newsweek Magazine, provided the overall design inspiration for the new Siam Discovery. It is nendo’s largest project, ever, and his first in Thailand.

Mrs. Chutrakul said, “Siam Piwat looks at the future from a global perspective rather than just the potential of the Thai market. In line with our growth strategy, we are creating destinations that can compete with the best of the world and which support Thailand in becoming a retail and entertainment paradise. The new Siam Discovery will reinforce Bangkok’s appeal as the retailing capital of the ASEAN Economic Community.”

She expects the new Siam Discovery to attract, in the first year, 100,000 visitors a day, with around 35% being international visitors.

-Leading APAC Telco Deploys Darktrace’s Self-Learning Technology for Stronger Cyber Defence

SINGAPORE  /PRNewswire/ — Darktrace, the leader in Enterprise Immune System technology, announces its partnership with leading Asia Pacific telecommunications company, Telstra. The company has selected Darktrace’s next-generation, cyber-threat detection technology to strengthen its internal security and defence strategy.

Headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, Telstra is the leading telecommunication services provider in the Asia Pacific region. It builds and operates telecommunication networks and markets a variety of products, including broadband internet, fixed and mobile phone lines, network services, digital television and other entertainment products.

With an annual revenue of more than 25 billion Australian dollars, a global workforce of more than 36,000 people and a large customer base, the company considers cyber security to be a key strategic challenge and opportunity. It wanted to embrace the latest technological innovations in the cyber security industry to benefit from an enhanced understanding of its networks and for better defence against emerging cyber-threats, both internal and external.

Telstra decided to deploy Darktrace’s award-winning Enterprise Immune System across its enterprise network because of its unique capability to spot abnormal behaviours in real-time within the organisation. Powered by machine learning and mathematics developed at the University of Cambridge, UK, Darktrace detects in-progress cyber-threats and then alerts the organisation. In addition, Darktrace’s Threat Visualizer enables prompt investigations, triages, response and risk mitigation, allowing Telstra to keep pace with today’s dynamic business environment.

Darktrace appliances have been installed across Telstra’s enterprise data network. The Telstra discovery and security teams will use the distributed Darktrace Enterprise Immune System to achieve greater visibility of unusual behaviours and movement within its online environment. The company will now be able to investigate, respond and reduce the time to triage, whilst minimising potential impact.

“We are delighted to join forces with Darktrace to bring new, innovative technology to the cyber security challenge that all organisations are faced with,” said Mike Burgess, CISO Telstra. “Darktrace’s technology is unique in its ability to rapidly detect anomalous activity, irrespective of whether the behaviours are ‘known’ or ‘unknown’, as well as being able to visualise all network activity. By reducing the time taken to detect potential threats, Darktrace is strengthening Telstra’s internal security.”

“Darktrace and Telstra share a common vision for the future of cyber defence, based on understanding and knowing your organisation better than your adversary and using next-generation machine learning to automate the process of subtle threat detection,” said Nicole Eagan, CEO, Darktrace. “We are proud to work with Telstra to further this goal, and bring adaptive, immune system defence to more sectors across Asia Pacific.”

HSINCHU  /PRNewswire/ — MediaTek and Ericsson today announced successful testing to enable Wi-Fi calling across advanced MediaTek powered mobile devices and Ericsson’s mobile network. The collaboration will bring the advantages of Wi-Fi calling to a significantly larger base of devices and end-users.

The comprehensive suite of testing between a MediaTek based mobile device and the Ericsson Evolved Packet Core and Ericsson IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) included registration, idle and active call mobility – for example between Wi-Fi and LTE – SMS, voice and video calling and emergency services Wi-Fi calling.

These features, already available on Ericsson’s mobile network solution, are now also offered on MediaTek helio X and P series SoC’s — starting from helio P10 — and on all new 4G LTE smartphone SoC platforms from MediaTek.
