National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Situated Near Imperial Palace, Introducing 20th-Century Japanese Art

TOKYO /PRNewswire/ — The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, isJapan’s first national art museum situated at the Kitanomaru Park adjacent to the Imperial Palace. The museum boasts a collection of over 12,500 art works, and introduces the history of about 100 years of Japanese modern art from the beginning of the 20th century.

In the spring of 2016, various masterpieces, mainly Japanese paintings, will be displayed. The museum is conveniently located for those who also visit the Imperial Palace, and a must-see place particularly in spring when cherry blossoms are in full bloom. You can view Japanese paintings acclaimed as masterpieces along with cherry blossoms, thereby enjoying Japan’s graceful spring.

The museum’s collection gallery displays about 200 works from its collection of more than 12,500 art works – mainly masterpieces of Japanese modern art, such as those designated as Important Cultural Properties. Many of the exhibits are replaced about four times a year. You can learn of the 20th-century history of Japanese art from works on display with English explanations.

From March 8 to May 15, the museum will hold an exhibition titled “MOMAT Collection Special Feature: Spring in Full Bloom: A Nihon-ga Festival,” displaying art works designated as Important Cultural Properties, including Kawai Gyokudo’s “Parting Spring” depicting cherry blossoms falling onto the surface of water. You have only one opportunity a year to view these works at a time. The museum will also hold a special exhibition titled “Yasuda Yukihiko: A Retrospective” from March 23 to May 15, featuring Yasuda’s masterpieces depicting historical figures and scenes.

Main attractions of the museum include the “highlight” corner, where the essence of its collection is condensed to allow visitors to enjoy art works in a short period of time, the Japanese painting section, and the observatory on the fourth floor. The observatory commands a panoramic view of the nature-rich Imperial Palace.

First-of-its-Kind Modular Hybrid Unmanned Ground Vehicle Unveils at the Singapore Airshow 2016

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — Milrem, an Estonian defence solutions provider specialising in military engineering, unveils the first-of-its-kind modular hybrid unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), THeMIS (Tracked Hybrid Modular Infantry System), today at the Singapore Airshow 2016.

A multi-mission vehicle platform that can assist and replace soldiers on the battlefield in complex and hazardous tasks, THeMIS is able to reduce operational risks and work as a force multiplier.

Together with Singapore Technologies Kinetics (ST Kinetics), Milrem developed the THeMIS ADDER which is a variant where THeMIS is equipped with ST Kinetics’ remote weapon station, the RWS ADDER. THeMIS ADDER will be exhibited at the Singapore Airshow 2016 at the Unmanned Solutions Demo Square at ST Engineering Pavilion, G01, Changi Exhibition Centre, from 1621 February 2016.

Unlike existing UGVs, THeMIS is a highly modular platform that allows different superstructures to be mounted and integrated onto the middle vehicular platform for complex missions such as rescue, transport, reconnaissance. The flexibility and versatile nature of the system not only increases efficiency, it also significantly reduces the life cycle costs of these complex unmanned systems with simplified maintenance and spare supplies.

Within the next 10 years, we will see smart ground systems complimenting the human troops during joint missions. Practical solutions will be tested in corporation with Estonian Defence Forces.

Milrem has successfully conducted initial running tests for the THeMIS prototype, and THeMIS will be ready for production by the end of this year.

MM&T Organisers Welcome Zimbabwean Tanners

HONG KONG /PRNewswire/ — The Organisers of MM&T 2016 are delighted to announce the presence of a new group pavilion at MM&T 2016. The pavilion will be from Zimbabwe and so far includes five companies that will exhibit their leathers and leather products at the trade fair. These enterprises are:

  • Wetblue Industries

MM&T boasted 27 national pavilions in 2015 and Zimbabwe will now join this number for the 2016 event. The fact that national associations — some supported by official (government) subsidies — opt to exhibit at MM&T as a unit, indicates the importance and reputation that MM&T has developed in the context of the international leather industry since its launch in 1984.

Zimbabwe will now be present for the first time as a national unit. It is interesting to note that the background to the decision to exhibit on the international stage offered by MM&T in Hong Kong has its roots in the United Nations.

Background and Information on Zimbabwe’s Leather Industry
The International Trade Centre (ITC), a UN agency, conducted in Zimbabwe during 2013 and 2014 a key development project called Trade and Private Sector Development Programme (TPSDP) funded by the European Union.

One of the various beneficiary industries was the leather industry. The main purpose was the improvement of Zimbabwean hide quality, particularly focused on skinning and conservation techniques. Ralph Arbeid, the ITC consultant, developed in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Leather Development Council (ZLDC), which is the focal point of the Zimbabwean leather industry’s Small & Medium Enterprises (SME’s), two training booklets. These were published in English and translated into the local Shona and Ndebele languages of which some 1,500 copies were distributed throughout the country to butcheries, abattoirs and traders.

In addition, Ralph held four training workshops in rural areas and donated 200 professional flaying knives purchased inSouth Africa from Jarvis, and then distributed by the ZLDC to rural butcheries, who provide for the majority of hides in the country.

The whole project was coordinated directly with private enterprises without Government intervention making it as efficient as possible. The first results are now emerging with a Chinese buyer recently visiting Zimbabwe and Turkish technicians assisting the tanneries to improve the tanning quality.

Difficulties to overcome
The coordinator of the EU-ITC programme is Bruno Van Eeckhout. He is aware of the great losses suffered by the sector in Zimbabwe, which are still making it difficult for the companies to remain operational and competitive.

The leather sector is valued at about US$450 million per year according to statistics from the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) but with many companies operating at capacities of between 40% and 70%, it is difficult to realise even this estimated value. There are 49 footwear manufacturing companies which use leather, and that are now at operational capacities of 25% to 40%.

The programme has been assisting the sector by organising workshops as well as implementing a national hides and skins grading system, aimed at improving the quality of the raw materials for leather goods. Training is also being provided to farmers, butchers and traders in improved animal husbandry, better flaying techniques and improved conservation techniques for cattle hides.

The EU funding can help ameliorate all these characteristics of the leather sector in Zimbabwe but can do little or nothing to break the drought caused by El Nino climate phenomenon that has plagued southern Africa over the last year, killing crops and livestock. In the Zimbabwean province of Matebeleland South the national livestock department estimates that so far 350,000 head of cattle have perished due to lack of pasture and water, out of a national herd of 5.3 million animals.

Nevertheless, the El Nino phenomenon is expected to cede by June / July this year and the returning  rains will be much welcomed not only in Zimbabwe but also in other regional latitudes hit by drought.

The steps forward being taken by Zimbabwe’s leather industry with the advent of international aid plus the presence of the country’s main tanneries on MM&T’s trade platform in March / April will place the country firmly on the map of the international leather business and start generating badly needed foreign exchange for the economy over the coming months and years.

Expanding Military Budget Prompts Philippines Defence Procurement Event

-Upcoming presidential elections in Philippines and a 9.2% increase in the country’s defence budget sees National Coast Watch Council Secretariat, Office Of The President partnering with IQPC Asia to host the inaugural Maritime Security & Coastal Surveillance Philippines in June 2016.

SINGAPORE/PRNewswire/ — In conjunction with the Philippine Government and the National Coast Watch Council Secretariat (NCWCS), IQPC Asia, will be hosting the inaugural Maritime Security & Coastal Surveillance Philippines conference on the 9-10 June 2016 in The Manila Hotel, Philippines.

The conference will follow on from the presidential elections taking place in May, where senior government officials, political decision makers and organisational heads from the Philippines and Southeast Asia will gather to discuss the current challenges and strategies to enhance maritime security and surveillance in the region.

In an official letter of agreement signed by Undersecretary Jose Luis M Alano, the conference welcomes international and regional Navies, Coast Guards and maritime government organisations to the event. Set to deliver over 200 delegates, the Undersecretary underscored the importance of the timing of the event which will showcase the operational and technological requirements of various organisations in the Philippines.

Issues including maritime security, illegal immigration, the smuggling of illicit goods and arms, piracy, human trafficking, anti-terrorism, illegal fishing and border protection are expected to dominate the agenda of the two-day conference.

“Given the opportunity to collaborate with the prestigious NCWCS, this conference acts as an ideal regional platform for Navies, Coast Guards, Air Force and all government defence bodies to engage in constructive dialogue over all pressing concerns in the changing maritime security environment. We’re looking forward to positive discussions from all defence bodies on their technology requirements as they make procurement decisions at the event,” adds Maya Sivamany, Head of the Defence and Government Portfolio at IQPC Asia.

Enhancing Maritime Security & Coastal Surveillance In The Philippines And The APAC Region Through The Effective Use Of Surveillance And Cutting-Edge Technologies” is the theme of the conference, and will allow local government organisations including the Philippine Navy, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Air Force, NAMRIA, Department of Transport and Communications, Department of National Defense, Bureau of Fisheries and more to highlight and search for the latest technological solutions to meet operational requirements.

In addition, the conference will feature VIP one-to-one meetings and bilateral visits between Philippine, regional government organisations, and key industry players in a bid to promote inter-agency cooperation and enhanced networking opportunities.
