JNA Awards 2016: Awards Categories

HONG KONG/PRNewswire/ — Celebrating its fifth anniversary next year, the JNA Awards, the jewellery and gemstone industry’s premier platform for recognising innovative and high-achieving individuals and enterprises, has announced changes to its award categories in 2016.

The organiser of the event, JNA (Jewellery News Asia), has made adjustments to a few award categories to encourage greater participation from more regions and, at the same time, consolidate some categories that are judged against a similar set of criteria. In 2016, the JNA Awards will have 11 categories, including the Lifetime Achievement Award the recipient of which will be selected by the organiser.

The award categories for 2016 are as follows:

  1. Lifetime Achievement Award
  2. Brand of the Year – Retail
  3. Industry Innovation/Sustainability Initiative of the Year
  4. Manufacturer of the Year – Cutting & Polishing
  5. Manufacturer of the Year – Jewellery
  6. Outstanding Enterprise of the Year – ASEAN/Korea
  7. Outstanding Enterprise of the Year – India
  8. Outstanding Enterprise of the Year – Greater China
  9. Retailer of the Year (450 outlets and below)
  10. E-tailer of the Year
  11. Young Entrepreneur of the Year (Age 40 and below)

Of the above-mentioned list, the two Manufacturer of the Year categories have been broadened to encourage wider stakeholder involvement from the manufacturing sector. The scope of the Outstanding Enterprise of the Year categories has also been expanded to inspire companies from regions outside of the ASEAN and Mainland China to join the awards.

Winning the 5G Innovation of the Year was Huawei’s 5G Unified Air Interface (UAI) which was revealed at Mobile World Congress 2015. IWK is responsible for providing sewerage services, operating and maintaining over 6,355 STPs and  a 17,551km network of sewerage pipelines which serve 22.3 million people except those in Kelantan, Sabah, Sarawak and Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru.

IWK’s Bunus Regional STP is one of the largest and most modern in Kuala Lumpur, encompassing a total sewerage catchment of 70km2 covering north-eastern Kuala Lumpur and Ampang-Ulu Klang areas including TAR College, Wardieburn Camp and Wangsa Maju.

The Bunus Regional STP is in the process of upgrading to increase its treatment loading capacity of sewage discharges from 373,000 population equivalent to 1.1 million. The upgrading work started three months ago and is expected to be completed within three years. “Currently, the treatment plant receives about 65,000 cubic meters of sewage water daily and processes between 20 and 30 cubic meters of treated sludge,” said its senior manager (operations), Ruzaini Ahmad.

New Study Released in Singapore Demonstrates Indoor Building Environment has Significant, Positive Impact on Cognitive Function

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — Improved indoor environmental quality doubled participants’ scores on cognitive function tests, according to a new study by researchers at the Harvard University T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s Center for Health and the Global Environment, SUNY Upstate Medical University and Syracuse University. The study was released in Singapore on December 4, 2015. The Impact of Green Buildings on Cognitive Function” study found that employees’ cognitive performance scores averaged 101 per cent higher in green building environments with enhanced ventilation compared to a conventional building environment.

“When it comes to the decision-making ability of green building occupants, intelligence is in the air,” said John Mandyck, United Technologies Chief Sustainability Officer. “We know green buildings conserve natural resources, minimize environmental impacts and improve the indoor environment, but these results show they can also become important human resource tools for all indoor environments where cognitive abilities are critical to productivity, learning and safety.

“The payback for improved indoor environmental quality far outweighs the investment, considering that more than 90 per cent of the costs associated with a building are related to the people who work within it once construction is completed,” he added.

“The results of this study signal that we should place equal importance on the improved indoor air quality provided by green buildings, not only for health reasons, but also to improve cognitive function and productivity,” said Tan Boon Kuan, group general manager, Carrier Singapore.

The double-blind study evaluated the cognitive performance of 24 participants who experienced conditions in a laboratory setting that simulate those found in conventional and green buildings, as well as green buildings with enhanced ventilation. Researchers measured cognitive function for nine functional domains, including basic, applied and focused activity levels; task orientation; crisis response; information seeking; information usage; breadth of approach; and strategy.

The largest improvements in cognitive function test scores occurred in the areas of crisis response, information usage and strategy.

  • Crisis response scores were 97 percent higher for the green environment and 131 percent higher for the green environment with enhanced ventilation and lower carbon dioxide levels compared to the conventional environment.
  • Information usage scores for green and enhanced green environments were 172 and 299 percent higher than in the conventional environment, respectively.
  • For strategy, green and enhanced green scores were 183 and 288 percent higher than the conventional environment.

The Center for Health and the Global Environment at the Harvard Chan School and SUNY Upstate Medical are launching a second phase of research, which will move from the lab into real buildings across the United States. This research will also be supported by a gift from United Technologies.

Leading Thailand Farmer Group NCSSSA Commends Government on Biosafety Bill Progress

BANGKOK /PRNewswire/ — With recent news that the Biosafety Bill has been met with cabinet approval, leading Thailand farmer group National Confederation for Safe, Secure and Sustainable Agriculture (NCSSSA) voiced their strong support today for the government’s action. The bill, which would introduce a regulatory framework for potential GMO crop cultivation in Thailand, was proposed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) and now moves to the National Legislative Assembly for consideration.

Joining NCSSSA in today’s announcement is prominent Thai farmer Sukan Sangwanna, a provincial member of the National Farmers Council.

“The farmers of Thailand are among the finest in the world, and our position as a leading food exporter proves it,” said Sangwanna.  “But with the increasing number of challenges they face, and the growth of modern agriculture in the region and world — our farmers are at risk of being left behind. On behalf of Thai farmers, I would like to commend our nation’s cabinet for putting our farmers first.”

Estimates indicate the world’s population will exceed nine billion inhabitants by the year 2050.  Asia alone is projected to have roughly one billion more people calling it home. Within just 10 short years, an additional 60 million men, women and children will be living in the Southeast-Asian region. To meet these demands, growers in Thailandand around the world will need to produce more food – as much as 70% more than today.

Due to the impact of less available water and arable land, the growing threat of pests and disease, and a changing climate to confront, Thailand farmers are increasingly being asked to do more with fewer resources — in turn, threatening their livelihood and the food security of our nation.

The technological advancements of plant science (including GMO or plant biotechnology) are a critical tool in the collective efforts to eliminate food insecurity in Thailand and hunger in many countries around the world. According to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA), plant biotechnology increased crop yields 22% and increased farmer profits 68% during the 20-year period of 1995 to 2014.

Cyber Security Knowledge Gap in Vietnam Could Be Putting Users at Risk, Reports ESET

  • Vietnam has lowest levels of cybersecurity awareness when compared with six other Asia-Pacific markets
  • 87% of respondents worry about online threats

ESET®, a global pioneer in proactive protection for more than two decades, has released the ESET Vietnam Cyber-Savviness Report 2015 showing that users in Vietnam have low cyber security awareness and do not take adequate preventive measures, which could make them vulnerable to cyber threats. The findings show that while 87 percent of users in the country worry about online threats, only 32 percent take the right steps to protect themselves – the lowest in the Asia-Pacific region.

The survey polled 500 respondents in Vietnam to gain insights into attitudes, knowledge and user behavior there when it comes to cybersecurity. The findings were released at the 18th Association of Anti-Virus Researchers International Conference 2015 in Danang, Vietnam.

When compared with the results of the ESET Asia Cyber-Savviness Report 2015, which covered six other Asia-Pacific markets, Vietnam came last in terms of cyber-savviness behind Malaysia, Singapore, India, Thailand, Hong Kong and Indonesia, in that order. Cyber-savviness is based on factors such as users’ knowledge or ability to understand activities that are likely to make them vulnerable online, risky behaviors while surfing the web, and the proactive steps they can take to protect themselves online.

“As Internet use surges in Vietnam, the country relies more and more on data, electronic communications and information technology to drive innovation and efficiency, resulting in increased exposure to cyber security risks,” said Parvinder Walia, Sales and Marketing Director, ESET Asia-Pacific. “The ESET Vietnam Cyber-Savviness Report 2015 highlights that although Internet users in Vietnam know certain actions can put them at risk or make them more vulnerable when online, it is not enough to stop them from making these mistakes. The gap between knowledge and action is a worrying trend as hackers tend to look for the path of least resistance. If users don’t take it upon themselves to ensure that they’re adequately protected, they might unwittingly become the victim of a cyber-attack.”

Key survey results show that a majority of Vietnamese Internet users have misconceptions about common cybersecurity issues with people being unable to correctly answer questions such as the dangers of using free public Wi-Fi (59% think it’s safe) and creating passwords using personal details (70% think it’s safe). Sixty-two percent of users also believe in the myth that a PC is more likely to be hacked than a mobile device, further highlighting a lack of awareness.

Users in Vietnam worry most about the safety of sensitive information on their personal devices and protecting their devices from viruses. Worryingly, only approximately 30 percent of users surveyed recognized the serious risks posed by common threats such as unsecured applications, spam emails and banner advertisements, highlighting another serious knowledge gap that could be making them vulnerable to attack.

Risky online behavior widespread in Vietnam, especially amongst younger users

Users in Vietnam commit basic mistakes like connecting to unsecured public Wi-Fi (71%), setting easy to remember passwords (70%), keeping passwords unchanged for a long time (66%), keeping accounts signed in at all times (59%), and downloading files from unofficial sources (49%).  The results also show that, on average, over 68 percent of 18-24 year olds in Vietnam engage in risky online behavior.

Mr Walia added: “It is critical that we boost awareness about online security and bust common myths around this issue. Users across Vietnam are still taking unnecessary risks when online, partly due to a lack of awareness and partly due to the misconception that their personal accounts and online activities are not a target for hackers. This is a shame because taking simple steps like regularly changing passwords would dramatically reduce their risks of being hacked, helping them to be safe and confident while surfing the web.”

Guwahati International Airport in Assam will host the first GARD programme to be held in India from 8-11 December 2015.

During the GARD workshop, participants will brainstorm and develop action plans on how to better prepare airport personnel for emergencies caused by natural disasters. This includes being able to address the often high volumes of emergency relief aid, incoming goods and passengers in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.

Participants include a mix of staff from the airport’s terminal management team, including cargo handling, operations, communications, navigation services, electric, civil and electric engineering, fire and security services, immigration, customs and district officials. Organizations involved in disaster relief such as the National Disaster Management Authority, Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the Indian Air Force and the International Organization for Migration are also participating in the workshop.

As disasters pose unique situations and logistical challenges for airports, disaster management planning, preparedness and capacity building of airport staff and other stakeholders is of paramount importance.

“Guwahati International Airport received 2.2 million passengers between 2011 and 2012. In the event of a disaster, the airport will play a crucial role in relief efforts undertaken. Realizing the increasing frequency and threats of disaster in civil aviation, Airport Authority of India (AAI), in partnership with UNDP and DHL, initiated Get Airport Ready for Disaster (GARD) programme as a preparedness measure to ensure the airport remains functional during and after disasters,” said RK Srivasatava, Chairman, Airport Authority of India.

About the GARD Program

GARD was developed by Deutsche Post DHL Group in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with the aim of preparing airports in disaster-prone areas to handle the surge of incoming relief goods after a natural disaster occurs. It also enables the various organizations and aid agencies to better understand the processes at the airport in the aftermath of a disaster, which will help facilitate relief efforts and enhance overall coordination.

GARD trainers and materials are provided free-of-charge by DPDHL Group while UNDP leads the project implementation and facilitate the coordination with the government authorities. GARD training workshop arrangements and logistics costs are fully covered by UNDP with funding contribution by the government of Germany.

Deutsche Post DHL Group’s disaster management programme

The GARD concept complements the disaster management program of Deutsche Post DHL Group, including the DHL Disaster Response Teams (DRT). DRTs step in to organize the logistics at airports following a disaster and this has been implemented at over 30 airports since its launch in 2005. The DRTs, which work free-of-charge and in close cooperation with the United Nations, help keep the flow of incoming relief goods moving at disaster-site airports. Both GARD and DRT form GoHelp, part of the Group’s Corporate Responsibility Program “Living Responsibility”. Both programs are conducted in partnership with the United Nations on the basis of a voluntary engagement.

To this date, GARD has been implemented at over 30 airports in Indonesia (2009, 2011), Nepal and Bangladesh(2010), Lebanon and Turkey (2012), El Salvador, Panama, Philippines, Armenia (2013), Peru, Philippines, Jordan,Dominican Republic and Sri Lanka (2014), as well as Macedonia and Dominican Republic (2015).

Since 2002, UNDP has partnered with the Ministry of Home Affairs in India in empowering communities to manage disaster risk in urban and rural areas. Pilot interventions with communities across India have been instrumental in strengthening community-based preparedness to tackle the onslaught of disaster across India.  UNDP’s programmes from 2002 to 2008 reached out to approximately 300 million people living in areas vulnerable to multi-hazards.
