Albright Stonebridge Group Announces The Passing Of Samuel R. Berger

WASHINGTON /PRNewswire/ — With sadness, Albright Stonebridge Group (ASG) announces the passing of our dear friend, firm co-founder and co-Chair, Samuel “Sandy” R. Berger, following a courageous battle with cancer. He passed away early this morning, surrounded by his family.

In life, Sandy was passionate about many things, including baseball, but foremost were his family and international relations and his commitment to making the world a better place.  A truly accomplished man, with an extraordinary career in both the private and public sectors, Sandy treated ASG as an extension of his family. His door was always open, and he enjoyed serving as a mentor to his many colleagues who regularly sought him out for advice and conversation.

Albright said, “Our country is stronger because of Sandy’s deep and abiding commitment to public service, and there are countless people whose lives he changed for the better. I am certainly one of them. He was one of my dearest friends and among the wisest people I have ever met. Before co-founding Stonebridge International and later ASG, Sandy had a long and distinguished career in both the public service and the law. From 1993 – 2001, he served as White House National Security Advisor and Deputy National Security Advisor to President Bill Clinton, where he led policy efforts across a range of global issues including the Balkans, Middle East and Northern Ireland peace processes, the fight against terrorism, and strengthening U.S. relationships with India, China, and other nations.  Prior to his service in the Clinton administration, he spent 16 years at Hogan & Hartson, where he led the firm’s international practice. Earlier in his career, Sandy held advisory positions in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Department of State, and with the mayor of New York City. He served on boards and in advisory positions of many organizations, the World Food Program USA, the International Crisis Group, and the Council on Foreign Relations.

This year, Sandy was presented with the prestigious Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, one of the highest awards bestowed by the government of Japan, for his significant contributions to strengthening the relations between the United States and Japan. Additionally, he was honored earlier this week with the inaugural Global Humanitarian Award by the World Food Program USA (WFP), which has also created the Samuel R. Berger Humanitarian Fund to focus on humanitarian responses to conflict, an issue Sandy was committed to for years.

Sandy is survived by his wife Susan Harrison Berger; his children Deborah Berger Fox, Alexander Berger, Sarah Berger Sandelius; his sons-in-law Nick Fox and Sonny Sandelius; daughter-in-law Susan Napier; and his five beloved grandchildren Eliza, Zachary, Estelle, Grace, and Astrid.

The thoughts and prayers of the global Albright Stonebridge Group family are with Susan and his family at this difficult time. Memorial contributions may be made to the Samuel R. Berger Humanitarian Fund at the World Food Program USA.

SRO, Philips and SUTD Create an Unforgettable Christmas with Interactive Lighting Display

-Partnering for the first time to illuminate the iconic Read Bridge, RIBbon features a combination of sound, motion and lighting technologies

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — This Christmas, Singapore River One (SRO), Philips and theSingapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) collaborate for the first time to bring a scintillating display of interactive lights to the Singapore River. Titled RIBbon, this eye-catching state-of-the-art installation interacts with pedestrians by translating movements and sounds into beautiful light modulations. The display stretches across the Read Bridge in Clarke Quay and promises to create new experiences for visitors from 4 December 2015to 3 January 2016 in celebration of Christmas by the River. 

“SRO is excited and honoured to partner with both Philips Singapore and SUTD this Christmas for an amazing light feature,” said Mr. Wilson Tan, Chairman of Singapore River One. “The installation will definitely bring cheer and sparkle to visitors at the Singapore River this festive occasion. Visitors can also look forward to other fun-filled programmes apart from the interactive light and sound installation on Read Bridge and participate in the festive revelry. Come to the River — Where it all began!”

RIBbon uses more than 200 high-intensity full-colour Philips LED lights — Philips iColor Flex LMX LED — that are arranged in tubes to create a fluid and dynamic structure. Lined with motion sensors and microphones, the Philips LED lights pulsate in resonance with the festive music of the Singapore River, and glow with greater intensity as they detect more pedestrian traffic and interaction along the bridge.

This project has been conceptualized, designed and prototyped by  SUTD’s Professor Thomas Schroepfer, Associate Head of Pillar Architecture and Sustainable Design and Assistant Professor Suranga Nanyakkara from the Augmented Human Laboratory, along with ten students from the respective departments. To achieve a level of interactivity, an SUTD-built sensor was designed by fusing two technologies, the infrared camera and microphone. The combination of these technologies enables the processing of signals based on the energy of noise and movement on the bridge.

With connected LED light that goes beyond functional benefits, we now have infinite possibilities for beautifying cityscapes, creating safer cities and enhancing people’s lives. Through RIBbon, you will be able to witness the dynamics of integrated LED lighting on the Read Bridge in a way that showcases the best of Philips innovation and SUTD creative design,” comments Mr. Wee Shiang Ning, General Manager of Philips Lighting Singapore. “We are very honoured to be a part of the RIBbon project — one of the many ways in which we touch people’s lives through meaningful innovations.”

DBS to Invest S$10 Million in the Singapore Startup Ecosystem over Five Years

-DBS HotSpot pre-accelerator to kick off multi-year programme to support Singapore startup community

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — DBS Bank will invest S$10 million in initiatives that will support the development of the startup ecosystem in Singapore over the next five years. These initiatives include DBS owned programmes, partnerships with accelerators and other startup programmes.

DBS HotSpot, the first pre-accelerator programme created by an Asian bank, kicks off the series of initiatives. The programme is designed to help very early stage startups develop their ideas by offering them a SGD 25,000entrepreneur award, workspace and access to industry mentors. Unlike other accelerators, DBS HotSpot does not require the startup to have an existing prototype or operating business. Importantly, DBS does not take an equity stake from the participating teams.

Neal Cross, Chief Innovation Officer, DBS Bank, said, “Singapore is becoming a thriving startup ecosystem and with our roots as the Development Bank of Singapore, we are keen to help grow the community. For many aspiring entrepreneurs, taking that initial plunge, leaving their stable jobs and following their startup dreams can be a daunting process. The DBS HotSpot is designed to support local startups in the very early stages of testing their ideas and getting them off the ground. Subsequently, we will continue to support them through later stage accelerators and industry programmes.”

During the three-month programme, DBS HotSpot participants worked with leading industry mentors including angel investors and DBS executives. The success of the programme has captured the attention of the startup community and interest in the second intake.

The startups worked on ideas spanning social innovation to fintech, including:

  • Reducing poverty in Vietnam through bike production — BambooBike
  • Using gamification to motivate people to run — Mirri
  • Enabling consumers to shop online collectively and enjoy greater bargains — BeMex
  • Helping migrant workers remit funds home quickly — Nickel
  • Enabling SMEs to auction unpaid invoices for quick cash — InvoiceInterchange

Both Nickel and InvoiceInterchange have been accepted to Startupbootcamp FinTech FastTrack. Investors have also displayed keen interest in InvoiceInterchange.

Ryzodeg(R) Delivers Significantly Lower Rates of Hypoglycaemia and Nocturnal Hypoglycaemia in a Broad Range of Type 2 Diabetes Patients

New analyses demonstrate that Ryzodeg® (insulin degludec/insulin aspart) achieved successful glycaemic control with significantly lower rates of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) and nocturnal hypoglycaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes versus BIAsp 30 and/or a basal-bolus regimen of insulin degludec and insulin aspart[1][3]. These findings were presented today at the 23rd World Diabetes Congress of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).

The analyses of pooled data from five clinical studies highlighted that these benefits were delivered to patients irrespective of baseline HbA1c, disease duration or body mass index (BMI)[1][3]. The results also revealed that Ryzodeg® versus both comparators resulted in statistically significant reductions in fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and a lower insulin dose with significant differences in patients with BMI ≤ 30 or a disease duration longer than 10 years[1][3].

“Managing hypoglycaemia while also achieving optimal glycaemic control are important considerations when selecting a treatment regimen,” commented Dr. Helena Rodbard, presenting author of the analyses. “These findings are especially relevant in the era of personalised medicine, and provide valuable assistance to the clinical use of Ryzodeg® in patients with type 2 diabetes.”

These data are from the analyses of five 26-week treat-to-target phase 3a/b clinical trials in people with type 2 diabetes.

About the analyses

The post-hoc pooled analyses evaluated the efficacy and safety of Ryzodeg® in controlling glycaemic parameters and rates of hypoglycaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes stratified according to baseline HbA1c, disease duration and body mass index (BMI). End of trial HbA1c, FPG, insulin dose and confirmed and nocturnal confirmed hypoglycaemia were analysed in the aforementioned patient categories, according to baseline characteristics stratification: HbA1c (<7.5%, ≥7.5-<8.5%, ≥8.5-<9.0%, ≥9.0%), FPG (<5.5, >5.5-<7.0, >7.0-<10.0, >10.0 mmol/L), disease duration (≤10 or >10 years) and BMI (≤30 or >30 kg/m2)[1][3].
