Albright Stonebridge Group Announces The Passing Of Samuel R. Berger

leave a comment »

WASHINGTON /PRNewswire/ — With sadness, Albright Stonebridge Group (ASG) announces the passing of our dear friend, firm co-founder and co-Chair, Samuel “Sandy” R. Berger, following a courageous battle with cancer. He passed away early this morning, surrounded by his family.

In life, Sandy was passionate about many things, including baseball, but foremost were his family and international relations and his commitment to making the world a better place.  A truly accomplished man, with an extraordinary career in both the private and public sectors, Sandy treated ASG as an extension of his family. His door was always open, and he enjoyed serving as a mentor to his many colleagues who regularly sought him out for advice and conversation.

ASG co-Chair Madeleine K. Albright said, “Our country is stronger because of Sandy’s deep and abiding commitment to public service, and there are countless people whose lives he changed for the better. I am certainly one of them. He was one of my dearest friends and among the wisest people I have ever met. I will always treasure our decades-long partnership, both in and out of government, and I will be forever proud of what we accomplished together. All of us at ASG will continue to draw inspiration from his vision and leadership.”

“It was a joy to work alongside Sandy for so many years, at ASG, the White House, and Hogan & Hartson,” saidAnthony S. Harrington, Chair of ASG’s managing board. “We are all enriched by being part of his extraordinary life – one that truly made a difference in the world.”

Albright Stonebridge Group co-Chair Carlos M. Gutierrez said: “Sandy will be missed by all who knew him, in business and in government, across the political spectrum. Our clients admired his innovative drive, and I also admired his success in building an extraordinary and enduring global institution. He set the bar high, and we as a firm will continue to aspire to meet that standard every day.”

Before co-founding Stonebridge International and later ASG, Sandy had a long and distinguished career in both the public service and the law. From 1993 – 2001, he served as White House National Security Advisor and Deputy National Security Advisor to President Bill Clinton, where he led policy efforts across a range of global issues including the Balkans, Middle East and Northern Ireland peace processes, the fight against terrorism, and strengthening U.S. relationships with India, China, and other nations.  Prior to his service in the Clinton administration, he spent 16 years at Hogan & Hartson, where he led the firm’s international practice. Earlier in his career, Sandy held advisory positions in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Department of State, and with the mayor of New York City. He served on boards and in advisory positions of many organizations, the World Food Program USA, the International Crisis Group, and the Council on Foreign Relations.

This year, Sandy was presented with the prestigious Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, one of the highest awards bestowed by the government of Japan, for his significant contributions to strengthening the relations between the United States and Japan. Additionally, he was honored earlier this week with the inaugural Global Humanitarian Award by the World Food Program USA (WFP), which has also created the Samuel R. Berger Humanitarian Fund to focus on humanitarian responses to conflict, an issue Sandy was committed to for years.

Sandy is survived by his wife Susan Harrison Berger; his children Deborah Berger Fox, Alexander Berger, Sarah Berger Sandelius; his sons-in-law Nick Fox and Sonny Sandelius; daughter-in-law Susan Napier; and his five beloved grandchildren Eliza, Zachary, Estelle, Grace, and Astrid.

The thoughts and prayers of the global Albright Stonebridge Group family are with Susan and his family at this difficult time. Memorial contributions may be made to the Samuel R. Berger Humanitarian Fund at the World Food Program USA.
As the premier global strategic advisory firm, Albright Stonebridge Group (ASG) helps our clients succeed in international markets. We assess and manage risks, identify and seize opportunities, and solve political and regulatory challenges. ASG’s worldwide team of commercial diplomats has served clients in more than 100 countries and across all major industries.

SRO, Philips and SUTD Create an Unforgettable Christmas with Interactive Lighting Display

leave a comment »

-Partnering for the first time to illuminate the iconic Read Bridge, RIBbon features a combination of sound, motion and lighting technologies

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — This Christmas, Singapore River One (SRO), Philips and theSingapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) collaborate for the first time to bring a scintillating display of interactive lights to the Singapore River. Titled RIBbon, this eye-catching state-of-the-art installation interacts with pedestrians by translating movements and sounds into beautiful light modulations. The display stretches across the Read Bridge in Clarke Quay and promises to create new experiences for visitors from 4 December 2015to 3 January 2016 in celebration of Christmas by the River.

“SRO is excited and honoured to partner with both Philips Singapore and SUTD this Christmas for an amazing light feature,” said Mr. Wilson Tan, Chairman of Singapore River One. “The installation will definitely bring cheer and sparkle to visitors at the Singapore River this festive occasion. Visitors can also look forward to other fun-filled programmes apart from the interactive light and sound installation on Read Bridge and participate in the festive revelry. Come to the River — Where it all began!”

RIBbon uses more than 200 high-intensity full-colour Philips LED lights — Philips iColor Flex LMX LED — that are arranged in tubes to create a fluid and dynamic structure. Lined with motion sensors and microphones, the Philips LED lights pulsate in resonance with the festive music of the Singapore River, and glow with greater intensity as they detect more pedestrian traffic and interaction along the bridge.

This project has been conceptualized, designed and prototyped by  SUTD’s Professor Thomas Schroepfer, Associate Head of Pillar Architecture and Sustainable Design and Assistant Professor Suranga Nanyakkara from the Augmented Human Laboratory, along with ten students from the respective departments. To achieve a level of interactivity, an SUTD-built sensor was designed by fusing two technologies, the infrared camera and microphone. The combination of these technologies enables the processing of signals based on the energy of noise and movement on the bridge.

“The future of lighting is here. With connected LED light that goes beyond functional benefits, we now have infinite possibilities for beautifying cityscapes, creating safer cities and enhancing people’s lives. Through RIBbon, you will be able to witness the dynamics of integrated LED lighting on the Read Bridge in a way that showcases the best of Philips innovation and SUTD creative design,” comments Mr. Wee Shiang Ning, General Manager of Philips Lighting Singapore. “We are very honoured to be a part of the RIBbon project — one of the many ways in which we touch people’s lives through meaningful innovations.”

To add to the celebratory mood, there will be Christmas caroling on bumboats decked in Christmas decorations as they cruise down the river as well irresistible festive deals and promotions offered by participating restaurants along the Singapore River.

DBS to Invest S$10 Million in the Singapore Startup Ecosystem over Five Years

leave a comment »

-DBS HotSpot pre-accelerator to kick off multi-year programme to support Singapore startup community

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — DBS Bank will invest S$10 million in initiatives that will support the development of the startup ecosystem in Singapore over the next five years. These initiatives include DBS owned programmes, partnerships with accelerators and other startup programmes.

DBS HotSpot, the first pre-accelerator programme created by an Asian bank, kicks off the series of initiatives. The programme is designed to help very early stage startups develop their ideas by offering them a SGD 25,000entrepreneur award, workspace and access to industry mentors. Unlike other accelerators, DBS HotSpot does not require the startup to have an existing prototype or operating business. Importantly, DBS does not take an equity stake from the participating teams.

Neal Cross, Chief Innovation Officer, DBS Bank, said, “Singapore is becoming a thriving startup ecosystem and with our roots as the Development Bank of Singapore, we are keen to help grow the community. For many aspiring entrepreneurs, taking that initial plunge, leaving their stable jobs and following their startup dreams can be a daunting process. The DBS HotSpot is designed to support local startups in the very early stages of testing their ideas and getting them off the ground. Subsequently, we will continue to support them through later stage accelerators and industry programmes.”

During the three-month programme, DBS HotSpot participants worked with leading industry mentors including angel investors and DBS executives. The success of the programme has captured the attention of the startup community and interest in the second intake.

Max Tiong, DBS Innovation Group Startup and Ecosystems Lead, DBS Bank, added, “We discovered that there are many Singaporeans, from all walks of life, who have great business ideas — but an idea is just an idea unless you go out and do something about it! The first 11 DBS HotSpot startups have been through a rigorous programme of testing and refining their ideas to turn these into commercially viable products. This is just the start for them but they are now in much better shape to go to market and to attract future funding.”

The startups worked on ideas spanning social innovation to fintech, including:

  • Reducing poverty in Vietnam through bike production — BambooBike
  • Using gamification to motivate people to run — Mirri
  • Enabling consumers to shop online collectively and enjoy greater bargains — BeMex
  • Helping migrant workers remit funds home quickly — Nickel
  • Enabling SMEs to auction unpaid invoices for quick cash — InvoiceInterchange

Both Nickel and InvoiceInterchange have been accepted to Startupbootcamp FinTech FastTrack. Investors have also displayed keen interest in InvoiceInterchange.

Dennis Goh, founder of HungryGoWhere and partner at Wavemaker Partners is a DBS HotSpot mentor. “This experience takes me back to my early days of founding HungryGoWhere. It has been extremely rewarding over the last three months helping these young people develop their idea to the stage where they now have a number of sign-ups and potential business partners,” Goh said.

Since 2010, DBS has focused on building an innovative culture, encouraging greater collaboration between FinTechs and the bank. Through DBS HotSpot and other programmes, DBS also plays a key role in building a robust startup ecosystem in the region. Applications for DBS HotSpot 2016 will open in Q1 2016. Wendy Lee, Operations Director Asia Pacific at Priority Pass, part of the Collinson Group said: “We’re delighted that the Louis Tavern CIP First Class Lounge in the International Terminal at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport has been recognised as the Asia Pacific region winner of these prestigious awards for a second time. This impressive lounge offers travelers impeccable customer service and its modern interior design and relaxing ambience were rated highly by Priority Pass Members. The Asiana Business Lounge at Seoul Incheon International Airport and the More Premium Lounge at Taipei’sTaoyuan International Airport were both Highly Commended in the Asia Pacific region Lounge of the Year Awards 2015. The Emperor Lounge at Auckland International Airport was Highly Commended in the Global Award for Best Attitude & Service from Lounge Staff.

Priority Pass’ focus groups and member data highlight how travelers are increasingly less prepared to pay a premium to upgrade their plane seats, preferring to enhance their travel with benefits such as lounge access, concierge services and exclusive experiences at their destinations. Many members see lounges as a valued refuge from increasingly busy airports and a benefit they enjoy sharing with friends, family and colleagues as guests.

This is particularly true amongst a young, affluent and culturally diverse group of ‘Conspicuous Consumers’ who appreciate the convenience and status of airport lounges and expect everything, including airline tickets and exclusive membership services, to be available digitally 24/7. The new Priority Pass Digital Membership Card and smartphone apps particularly resonate with this audience.

Lee adds: “Each of the winning lounges is accessible through the Priority Pass smartphone apps and the Digital Membership Card, something that serves to highlight just how important the digital experience has become for frequent flyers.”

Over 100,000 votes were cast by Priority Pass members in this year’s Lounge of the Year Awards, up from 84,000 votes last year, making it the highest volume of votes since the awards began. Members vote on a set of criteria covering overall lounge quality, including refreshments, staff, business facilities and ambience. The new Priority Pass app and website now make it even easier for Members to rate lounges that they are guests in, so we are confident that we will have even more data for next year’s awards.

Silent Circle Unleashes The Software And Cloud-Portion Of Its Enterprise Privacy Platform

leave a comment »

LONDON /PRNewswire/ —

  • New Silent Manager web-service capabilities deliver enterprise compliance and auditing for call detail and text
  • New Silent Phone app is re-engineered to include enterprise-specific features, as well as peer-to-peer encrypted calling, video, text and file transfers
  • Silent Phone app is now available in two subscription levels – basic and plus – for any Android or iOS device
  • Silent World calling capability delivers expanded coverage to secure global, enterprise communications
  • Platform built specifically for enterprises to ensure security and privacy while mitigating against data leakage from smartphones

Logo –

Silent Circle today announced the official release of its Enterprise Privacy Platform: a revolutionary set of secure software, services and devices designed to deliver privacy to business and government organizations of all sizes.

Building on the momentum of our Blackphone 2 launch, I’m proud to unleash all the work we have done on rebuilding our software and cloud-based Enterprise Privacy Platform,” said Bill Conner, President and CEO of Silent Circle. “Our platform delivers unprecedented secure communications with the enterprise management controls necessary for auditing and general oversight.” Conner continued: “Now governments and global enterprises have a new choice in secure communications that didn’t exist before, across any Android or iOS device.

The new Silent Manager gives designated administrators a simple and easy way to oversee their organization’s use of the Silent Circle platform through a web-based management interface. It provides at-a-glance overviews of current users, groups, and plans, as well as a newsfeed showing relevant Silent Circle information like updates to Silent Circle apps. “With the web management capability, administrators can add or remove users individually or in multiples – making Silent Circle accounts easy to deploy as needed,” said Conner. Silent Manager also allows for the creation of subscription codes, which can be used to distribute services outside of email or traditional business environments.

The company’s Silent Phone app, which encrypts VoIP and messaging services for any iOS or Android device, is now available in two subscription levels – Basic and Plus. Silent Phone Basic allows unlimited member-to-member encrypted voice calling and text messaging for an annual membership fee of $5.  Silent Phone Plus provides full functionality to include conference calling, file transfers, attachments, voice mail and direct customer support for$9.95 per month.

Silent Phone is available at the Apple App store and Google Play.

Silent World – a new type of calling capability – is a feature of Silent Phone that provides enhanced security and flexibility on any mobile device (iOS or Android). It extends the reach of Silent Phone’s encrypted calling to regular mobile and landline numbers to 439 destinations, allowing for private conversations to effectively anyone in the world – even to people who don’t currently use Silent Phone.

The release of the Enterprise Privacy Platform comes shortly after the highly successful launch of Silent Circle’s Blackphone 2, a smart-phone built from the ground up to be private by design and protect communication and data everywhere – not just inside company walls. “Blackphone 2 combines an enhanced Android operating system – Silent OS – and comes with the Silent Phone app pre-loaded. It’s designed to keep your enterprise and personal information secure,” adds Conner.

Cyber security – and in particular the threats posed by data leakage from mobile devices – has become a critical issue for enterprise as organizations face persistent threats to the privacy and security of mobile communications” said Conner. “With escalating network surveillance and monitoring combined with sophisticated eavesdropping across global networks, the increased use of mobile devices in a business setting provides great opportunities but also great risk.  Your company’s information is likely to be compromised when mobile devices are used without sufficient consideration for privacy and security.

Andrew Pinder CBE, who was recently appointed to the company’s Board Of Directors said “Silent Circle has matured into the world’s most trusted solution for mobile and enterprise privacy – serving individuals, businesses and governments around the world with a truly revolutionary ecosystem of software, services and devices.

Learning from the lessons of the attack on Sony, traditional security solutions have failed global enterprises,” Pinder explained. “What’s more, these breaches have evolved to have a much greater potential impact. They now put every customer, employee and partner at risk and are rapidly eroding the trust people have in enterprises. That’s why Silent Circle has developed a platform with a range of powerful solutions – allowing any business to apply the combination of solutions that works best for them.

Details of new, enterprise specific features for simple and near-immediate privacy deployment to your organization – with no hardware, maintenance or training required:

Enterprise Privacy Platform Capabilities:

    • Silent Manager now includes Active Directory Single Sign-On and LDAP integration
    • Customer-specific compliance requirements for auditing purposes
    • Compartmentalization of groups within an organization

    • Secure Video and Conference Calling
    • SMS invitations to non-members
    • More economic options to interconnect businesses and allow them the privacy they need to mitigate risk and maximize success. Silent Phone is now available at two subscriptions levels – Basic and Plus

New analyses demonstrate that Ryzodeg® (insulin degludec/insulin aspart) achieved successful glycaemic control with significantly lower rates of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) and nocturnal hypoglycaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes versus BIAsp 30 and/or a basal-bolus regimen of insulin degludec and insulin aspart[1][3]. These findings were presented today at the 23rd World Diabetes Congress of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).

The analyses of pooled data from five clinical studies highlighted that these benefits were delivered to patients irrespective of baseline HbA1c, disease duration or body mass index (BMI)[1][3]. The results also revealed that Ryzodeg® versus both comparators resulted in statistically significant reductions in fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and a lower insulin dose with significant differences in patients with BMI ≤ 30 or a disease duration longer than 10 years[1][3].

“Managing hypoglycaemia while also achieving optimal glycaemic control are important considerations when selecting a treatment regimen,” commented Dr. Helena Rodbard, presenting author of the analyses. “These findings are especially relevant in the era of personalised medicine, and provide valuable assistance to the clinical use of Ryzodeg® in patients with type 2 diabetes.”

These data are from the analyses of five 26-week treat-to-target phase 3a/b clinical trials in people with type 2 diabetes.

About the analyses

The post-hoc pooled analyses evaluated the efficacy and safety of Ryzodeg® in controlling glycaemic parameters and rates of hypoglycaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes stratified according to baseline HbA1c, disease duration and body mass index (BMI). End of trial HbA1c, FPG, insulin dose and confirmed and nocturnal confirmed hypoglycaemia were analysed in the aforementioned patient categories, according to baseline characteristics stratification: HbA1c (<7.5%, ≥7.5-<8.5%, ≥8.5-<9.0%, ≥9.0%), FPG (<5.5, >5.5-<7.0, >7.0-<10.0, >10.0 mmol/L), disease duration (≤10 or >10 years) and BMI (≤30 or >30 kg/m2)[1][3].

About Ryzodeg®

Ryzodeg® is a combination of two distinct insulin analogues (insulin degludec and insulin aspart in the ratio of 70% and 30%) making it the first combination of a basal insulin with a long duration of action and a well-established mealtime insulin in one pen for people with type 2 diabetes[4][6]. Ryzodeg® delivers a simple regimen with fewer injections than basal and bolus therapy[7].

Ryzodeg® received its first regulatory approval in December 2012, and has since been approved in more than 60 countries globally. Ryzodeg® was most recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on 25 September 2015 for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in adults and is currently commercially available in India,Mexico and Bangladesh.
