Singapore Media Festival 2015 Returns with a Stronger Line-up for Global Media Players and the Public

-Following last year’s success, the Festival continues to be a key connector that brings together global media players in Asia and beyond

HONG KONG and SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — The second edition of the Singapore Media Festival (SMF) will run from 26 November to 6 December 2015, with a stronger line-up of events featuring a new constituent event “Digital Matters”. More than 17,000 are expected to attend the SMF, including members of the public and media professionals such as filmmakers, producers, programme buyers, digital content creators and celebrities.

SMF will bring together five constituent events this year: Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), Asia TV Forum & Market (ATF), ScreenSingapore (SS), Asian Television Awards (ATA) as well as the latest addition to the festival — Branded Ltd.’s Digital Matters. These events firmly establish the SMF as a key connector for global media players in Asia and beyond.

At the media briefing this morning hosted by the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA), event partners and the Chairman of the SMF Advisory Board shared their vision and goals for the Festival.

New focus on digital content

The second edition of the SMF will have a stronger focus on digital content. Recognising that digital content is the way forward to reach out to a global audience, SMF has included Branded Ltd.’s Digital Matters as one of its new constituent events. With a combined reach of almost 10 million subscribers, YouTube stars Alfie Deyes and Marcus Butler will be heading the cast at Digital Matters. They will be joined by leaders in the online entertainment and brand marketing space including: Bing Chen, Chief Creative Officer from Victorious; Josh Black, Chief Executive Officer of GroupM Entertainment; and Susana Tsui, Chief Executive Officer of PHD Asia Pacific.

For SGIFF, the Festival will launch a new The Future of Cinema forum series, focusing this year on digital distribution. The forum will explore how independent filmmakers now have increased access to new platforms that allow them to premiere their works and reach wider audiences. Director of Audience Development and Content Operations at Vimeo, Peter Gerard (USA), heads the panel of speakers, along with filmmakers James Lee(Malaysia), Christian Lee and Jason Chan (Singapore). The forum is moderated by Singapore filmmaker and SGIFF Board Member Tan Pin Pin.

ATF’s pre-market conference will also be helmed by notable business leaders who will shed valuable insights on the Asian content industry including digital content trends and evolving business models in content creation and consumption.

Greater opportunities for investment into the region

This year, the SMF will open up more avenues for strategic partnerships, creative collaborations and investment opportunities into the region. ATF will host several TV masterclasses for producers, including sessions by Melodie L. Shaw, from the Writers Guild of America, and Dave Winnan, Executive Producer, International Formats from ITV Studios. Those in the film business will also benefit from ScreenSingapore’s new partnership with the Southeast Asian Audio-Visual Association (SAAVA) to run the Southeast Asian Film Financing Project Market, where 10 in-development fiction and non-fiction feature film projects will partake in the project market. They will be matched with commissioner, investors and co-production partners to bring their project to fruition.

Celebrating and showcasing the best of regional talent and beyond

The SMF will continue to showcase quality works from Singapore and the region on an international stage. The SGIFF will pay tribute to acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf with an Honorary Award, and a special retrospective of five of his works.  Makhmalbaf’s films have featured regularly in the Festival over the years, each reflecting his unyielding perseverance and conviction to convey the stories of Iran and its people through film. In recognising his lifelong dedication and contribution to cinema, the Festival hopes that Makhmalbaf’s efforts will inspire future filmmakers in Singapore and the region to continue telling the Asian story in profound ways.

The spirit of celebrating the best talent and content from the region also remains a key element of SMF. The ATA will unveil a series of “Firsts” for the prestigious awards. For the first time, ATA will be broadcasted “live”, expanding the reach of the awards to more than 80 million households across Asia. The ATA will also award the achievement award this year to Mr. Liu Changle, founder, Chairman and CEO of Phoenix Satellite Television, to honour and celebrate his contributions. Under his charge, the group has gone on to own six Satellite TV Channels and merged many business fronts, including new media, outdoor LED, weekly magazine, publishing, radio broadcasting and education, covering over 180 countries and regions. SMF offers exciting line-up for the public

The public can expect to see an exciting showcase of the best talent and content from Singapore and the region at the SGIFF and ATA. As part of the SGIFF’s key role in the discovery of independent cinema, members of the public can look forward to a quality line-up of screenings. The international premiere of Taiwanese indigenous film, Panay, is set to open the Festival on 26 November, while two iconic films of Singapore cinema — Eric Khoo’s Mee Pok Manand Yonfan’s Bugis Street Redux — have been included as part of the Classics segment, both marking their 20thanniversaries this year with special cast reunions. ATA’s celebrity line-up will feature some of Asia’s most outstanding acts and individuals. The star-studded show will include performances from Indonesia’s very own gem Anggun, and see Allan Wu, Joey Mead King, Max Loong and Stephanie Carrington join as hosts for the evenings.

Digital Matters will showcase the future of online entertainment by mixing content industry professionals and leading social media influencers together with their followers in a conference setting. With an eye firmly on developing future talent, Digital Matters will also introduce a slew of teen-focussed creative workshops and meet-and-greet sessions with online stars.

Extra Space Asia Partners with LYS Energy to Go Green

-Extra Space to be the first self-storage company in Singapore to partially rely on solar energy for its electricity consumption

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — Extra Space Asia, a leading self-storage provider headquartered inSingapore and with operations in five Asian countries, today announced its partnership with LYS Energy, aSingapore-based Independent Power Producer (IPP), on an initiative to rely on solar energy for a portion of the company’s electricity consumption in two of their seven storage facilities in Singapore. This alliance makes Extra Space the first self-storage company in Singapore to use solar energy for some of its energy needs – via the installation of solar panel systems on the roofs of its Kallang Way and Boon Keng facilities.

“As the discussions around sustainable energy come to the forefront in Singapore, it’s necessary for business leaders to incorporate ‘green’ strategies and move towards business models that prioritise sustainability,” saidKenneth Worsdale, CEO at Extra Space Asia. “We’re pleased to be working with LYS Energy on our solar panel initiatives for two of our facilities, and reduce our carbon footprint. We hope to be a part of Singapore’s push for a more sustainable future.”

The Kallang Way and Boon Keng storage facilities are fully outfitted with solar panels and are expected to be fully operational from this month. Once operational, the solar panel system is expected to deliver an estimated 169MWh of clean energy annually, covering upwards of 10 percent of electricity consumption for the Boon Keng storage facility, and 15 percent of the Kallang Way facility. This is roughly equivalent to the amount of energy required to power 43 homes for one year. Both solar systems will offset 73 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to nine cars being taken off the road for one year, or planting an additional 3,000 trees.

The initial project, which commenced in July 2015, is expected to be the first of further solar panel projects for Extra Space Asia. According to the Energy Market Authority (EMA), the use of solar power as an energy source inSingapore now contributes more to Singapore’s fuel mix than in previous years, and is expected to increase over the next five years.

Spearheading Construction Productivity through Transformative Technologies and Materials at BuildTech Asia 2015

-Breakthrough technologies, new initiatives and high-tech materials among highlights at this year’s show

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — BuildTech Asia 2015, the region’s leading trade show for the built environment, concluded after an immersive three-day showcase that explored the latest game-changing smart construction technologies and building materials from across the region. Organised by Sphere Exhibits and hosted by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), the annual trade show was held on 13-15 October, in conjunction with Singapore Construction Productivity Week (SCPW).

At the opening ceremony of SCPW, BCA announced SGD$2.6 million funding for research programmes to drive Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) across the sector and additional funding for Virtual Design and Construction (VDC). In line with this push towards technology adoption and Asia’s growing demand for building and construction technology, BuildTech Asia 2015 displayed a myriad of technologies and materials to help industry stakeholders from across the value chain maintain their competitive edge through higher productivity.

Over 5,200 visitors from across the region were treated to an impressive array of advanced construction technologies and smart materials, brought to life through live demonstrations, product displays and workshops by close to 150 exhibiting brands. An international turnout of exhibitors, trade associations and business delegations from over 13 countries and regions including Austria, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan,Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam, visited BuildTech Asia 2015.

Rolling out smart technologies and materials to the built environment sector

Several breakthrough technologies were introduced by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) to help Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the built environment sector enhance their productivity. One of these technologies is smart drones for safety management, introduced by Singapore-based drone developer Avetics. Drones reduce the need for workers to work at height and allow site surveys to be conducted in days compared to manual methods that take months.

The Foreign Construction Worker Directory System (FCWDS) was launched by Intercorp Solutions in partnership with Singapore Contractors Association Limited (SCAL) and supported by the Ministry of Manpower and IDA. The FCWDS is an online platform that supports the retention of skilled workers in the built environment sector and allows firms to better source workers with relevant skill sets.

Other key exhibits were the Drywall Prefabricated Bathroom Units (DPBU) displayed by Singapore construction and interior firm Tong Hai Yong and Eastern Pretech, a pioneer of PBU in Singapore; a series of innovative boom lifts capable of operating within tight space constraints showcased by Spiderlift Asia; and Concrete Canvas, a flexible fabric that hardens to form a concrete layer when hydrated, showcased by the Scott Vickers Group. Snorkel had also launched ‘Snorkel Guard’, a secondary guarding device for machine operators, as part of their ongoing continuous improvement initiatives for operator safety.

Advanced materials such as glued laminated timber (glulam), exhibited by Woodsfield Engineered Wood Systems and CW Construction Australia, and cross laminated timber (CLT) were among the highlights of this year’s show. The Skilled Builders Project brought glulam and CLT live to the audience at BuildTech Asia, where visitors witnessed the construction of a mid-rise commercial building structural module on the show floor. The Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB), a statutory body responsible for the development of Malaysia’s timber industry, conducted an educational session on glulam, sharing knowledge with industry stakeholders, buyers and sellers on the benefits and sustainability of glulam and its applications in construction.

Fostering and reinforcing relationships on a knowledge-based platform

Besides exploring the latest technologies and materials, delegates and exhibitors fostered new business relationships as well as commercial partnerships on the show floor. Various industry players announced new initiatives and partnerships aimed at elevating construction productivity in Singapore and the region:

  • FINALCAD announced a new partnership with leading construction and civil engineering contractor Woh Hup, marking its commitment to advancing the digital transition of the construction industry in Southeast Asia
  • Local construction and civil engineering company Tiong Seng signed an MOU with international firm PERI, the world’s largest formwork supplier, to build knowledge and skill-sets in advanced formwork technology

The inaugural Workplace Health & Safety Conference, themed ‘Zero in on Safety’, attracted close to 100 industry stakeholders who came together from across the region for informative sessions on the latest trends and developments in construction safety.

Allan Low, EHS Manager from Teambuild Engineering & Construction and part of a delegation of eight attendees, said: “The conference sessions were both educational and enriching. We gained insights on the use of smart technologies in construction such as the use of 3D and BIM technology for construction safety. These are extremely relevant for firms as the adoption of technology to boost productivity continues to gain popularity industry-wide.”
