“We are pleased to join hands with SK Telecom in the smart home business to assure the potential of the open ecosystem,” said Choi Seong-ho, Senior Vice President and Head of Smart Business Center at LG Electronics. “We hope this collaboration will become a role-model for both electronics and telecommunications companies to achieve mutual growth.”

DHL Records Double-digit CO2 Efficiency Improvement in Asia Pacific in 2014

leave a comment »

— Region improves CO2 efficiency by 12 per cent in 2014 over 2013, with star performer Malaysia achieving 21 per cent

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — DHL Express, the world’s leading cross-border express services provider, has improved its carbon efficiency year-on-year inAsia Pacific despite a growth in volume of about 10 per cent. In 2014, CO2 efficiency improvement over 2013 registered 12 per cent[1] across Asia Pacific with outstanding performance from Malaysiawhich registered a 21 per cent improvement, India at 15 per cent and Taiwan at 14 per cent.

Going Green in 2014 the DHL Way
Going Green in 2014 the DHL Way

To date, Deutsche Post DHL Group, the parent company of DHL, has achieved a 23 per cent improvement in its carbon efficiency against its 2007 baseline. This marks a continuous improvement in the area of carbon efficiency and yet another big step towards achieving the Group’s goal of improving the carbon efficiency of its operations (and that of its transportation subcontractors) by 30 per cent by the year 2020 as compared to 2007. With its GOGREENservice, which was developed as part of its GoGreen program focusing on environmental protection, DHL sent about 2.12 billion climate-neutral shipments in 2014 which led to the offset of 248,570 tons of CO2 through contributions to climate protection projects.

Jerry Hsu, CEO, DHL Express Asia Pacific, said: “Our GoGreen program is deeply integrated into our business’ overarching corporate strategy to achieve a 30 per cent CO2 efficiency improvement by 2020, compared to 2007. We are pleased to have achieved continued carbon efficiency improvements in Asia Pacific for six consecutive years through the development and introduction of innovative solutions. The 12 per cent CO2 efficiency improvement in 2014 was a result of our GoGreen initiatives such as deploying our ‘green’ fleets in the region, installing more energy efficient lighting systems in our facility, and increasing the use of renewable energy where it is available, among others, to further improve the carbon efficiency of our ground operations.

“As the global leader in logistics, we are well on our way in our efforts to reach this target. We remain committed to our GoGreen program and will continue to make a significant difference to the planet and to our customers by upholding our responsibility to the environment,” he added.

In Asia Pacific, modernizing transport fleets to employ new vehicles with cleaner technology and better fuel efficiency continues to yield CO2 efficiency success particularly in mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysiaand Taiwan. In Japan, DHL Express introduced a ‘green’ fleet of electric commercial vehicles in Tokyo’sMarunouchi district for pickup and delivery services as part of its GoGreen environmental program, while mainlandChina, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand and India expanded and upgraded its fleet of trucks, vans and scooters which operate on cleaner technology, alternative fuel and more energy efficient units such as Compressed Natural Gas/Liquefied Petroleum Gas, hybrid and electric powered variants.

2014 marked an exemplary year with DHL Express Taiwan testing the ‘Zero-emission transport system’, a fleet of electric scooters which are charged via a solar charging station, a one-of-its-kind innovation in the logistics industry – unlike electric scooters which are charged with conventional grid power which emits CO2. The station needs no connection to local utilities, drawing its entire power needs from its own array of solar panels.

Other top performers with notable CO2 efficiency improvement in Asia Pacific are Australia (13 per cent), Thailand(13 per cent), and mainland China (13 per cent).

DHL Express Asia Pacific started the assessment of its carbon footprint from energy consumption in real estate and ground transport to measure and improve carbon efficiency through abatement programs. This program was first introduced by DHL Express in 2008 and now covers over 1,000 facilities in over 30 markets across Asia Pacific.

Includes Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Scope 1 & 2 CO2 emissions on the ground, but excludes all aviation CO2emissions.

Multi-platinum selling artist Sam Smith has co-written the title song, “Writing’s On The Wall,” with fellow GRAMMY® Award winner Jimmy Napes. It is the first James Bond theme song recorded by a British male solo artist since 1965. Smith’s debut album In The Lonely Hour launched at No. 1 in the UK and bowed in at No. 2 in the US, and has since earned five No.1 UK singles, four GRAMMY® Awards, three Brit Awards, six MOBO Awards, Q and AMA Awards.

Commenting on the announcement, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, the producers of SPECTRE, said, “Sam and Jimmy have written the most inspirational song for SPECTRE and with Sam’s extraordinary vocal performance, ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time.”

Smith said, “This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”

The 23 previous James Bond theme songs make up some of the most memorable movie music of all time. The previous Bond theme song, “Skyfall,” was performed by Adele, and was honored with the Academy Award® and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, the Brit Award for British Single of the Year, and the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond (Daniel Craig) on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Bellucci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as SPECTRE.

Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), the new head of the Centre for National Security, questions Bond’s actions and challenges the relevance of MI6, led by M (Ralph Fiennes). Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) and Q (Ben Whishaw) to help him seek out Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux), the daughter of his old nemesis Mr White (Jesper Christensen), who may hold the clue to untangling the web of SPECTRE. As the daughter of an assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot.

As Bond ventures towards the heart of SPECTRE, he learns of a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks, played by Christoph Waltz.

Sam Mendes returns to direct SPECTRE, with Daniel Craig reprising his role as 007 for the fourth time. SPECTREis produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. The screenplay is by John Logan and Neal Purvis & Robert Wade and Jez Butterworth, with a story by John Logan and Neal Purvis & Robert Wade.

SPECTRE is set for release in the UK on October 26, 2015, and in the US on November 6, 2015.

Ahead of the UN Special Summit: Industrialized Nations are at Risk of Missing the new Sustainable Development Goals

BERLIN  /PRNewswire/ —

Most industrialized countries in the OECD are not yet ready for the international community’s new sustainability pledge. Many are nowhere near achieving the global policy objectives that are to be adopted by the heads of state or government at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit this month. Indeed, there is the danger that the targets for many indicators will be missed entirely. The greatest deficits of the industrialized nations lie in their less-than-sustainable production and consumption behavior. In addition, in many cases their economic systems also exacerbate the trend toward social inequality.

This is the result of a comparative study of all 34 OECD states conducted by Germany’s Bertelsmann Foundation on the basis of 34 indicators for the 17 future Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. The study is the first one in the world to systematically investigate the present status of each of these countries, both individually and in comparison with one another. This snapshot additionally identifies countries that can serve as role models with regard to particular Sustainable Development Goals, while also pointing out where substantial deficits still exist. Thus the study provides a blueprint for the attainment of the SDGs in the next 15 years.

According to the study, the countries best positioned to achieve the new UN goals are the four Scandinavian nations Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland, with Switzerland following in fifth place. The nations with the lowest ranking are the USA, Greece, Chile, Hungary, Turkey, and Mexico.

Aart De Geus, Chairman of the Bertelsmann Foundation, puts it in clear terms: “Our investigation is the first stress test for the industrialized countries. The analysis shows us where we, too, have to do our homework. And it shows us where the industrialized states are already at risk of missing the new Sustainable Development Goals.”

The investigation further reveals major differences between the individual countries with respect to various goals. Social inequality, especially, has now reached record levels in industrialized nations and continues to rise. In 23 OECD states, the wealthiest 10 percent of the population now earns at least as much as the poorest 40 percent. The earnings of the richest 10 percent in the USA are even 1.7 times as great as those of the poorest 40 percent and in Chile they are 3.3 times as great. In countries such as Slovakia, Slovenia, Norway, the Czech Republic, andDenmark, income is considerably less concentrated, proving that inequality is not an inevitable development.

Great differences are also apparent in, for example, environmental pollution. Countries like Australia, Canada,Poland, and Mexico discharge over six times as much carbon dioxide per unit of economic output as does Swedenor Norway. The share of renewable energy also varies considerably between countries. South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands use less than 4 percent of renewable energies. By contrast, Iceland, Norway, andSweden have already achieved a share of over 47 percent, which they are steadily expanding without hindering economic growth.

In his foreword to the study, Kofi Annan, the spiritual father of the Millennium Development Goals, calls for greater efforts on the part of the world’s wealthy countries: “I am thankful to the Bertelsmann Foundation for highlighting this issue in such elaborate detail. This study will hopefully spark reform debates on sustainability and social justice in many high-income countries. We owe it to our planet and its people.”
