60 Degrees Pharmaceuticals to Begin Phase II Clinical Trials in Dengue Fever Patients

WASHINGTON /PRNewswire/ — 60 Degrees Pharmaceuticals, (60P), a company focused on development of therapeutics for tropical diseases, and Singapore General Hospital (SGH) announced today that the Hospital has received a grant from Singapore’s National Medical Research Council to support a Phase II clinical trial among dengue fever patients.

Dengue fever, a painful, debilitating and potentially deadly mosquito-borne viral disease, infects an estimated 400 million people worldwide each year, causing 500,000 hospitalizations and creating a $12 billion annual burden. Instances of dengue, which cause flu-like symptoms and can develop into lethal severe dengue, have increased 30 fold over the past few decades.

Once believed to be only a “tropical” disease, there have been outbreaks in southern U.S. including Florida, as well as in France, Portugal and other European countries, which experts believe may expand in North Americaand Europe. In addition, scientists have discovered a type of dengue-carrying mosquito which can live in colder climates, meaning cases of dengue observed in the U.S. and Europe may increase substantially.

There are currently no FDA-approved vaccines or antiviral drugs for dengue virus infection and treatment has been limited to supportive and symptomatic treatment.

60P and SGH will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an antiviral, Celgosivir, and a disease- modifying agent, Modipafant, in the treatment of dengue.  Earlier animal studies suggest these drugs could prove effective in dengue fever patients. SGH and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School previously evaluated the efficacy of Celgosivir in dengue patients, establishing its safety.

60P and SGH have received approval from the relevant authority in Singapore and Institutional Review Board for the study, which is scheduled to start March 2016.

Hellmuth Karasek Reviews the 2016 IKEA Catalogue

The most printed book of our time, the IKEA catalogue, has been reviewed by a literary critic for the first time. And not just by anybody, but by Hellmuth Karasek, one of the most important and influential literary critics.

In 1951, Ingvar Kamprad sent the first catalogue to his customers. Its print run has been steadily rising ever since to some 220 million today. This makes the IKEA catalogue the most printed publication of current times, ahead of the Bible.

Karasek did not have to stick to any content requirements in his review. He reviewed the catalogue as he saw fit and according to the same criteria he applies to works of fiction.

One of Karasek’s criticisms, for example, is that the catalogue contains more pictures than active protagonists. He notes with some bewilderment that: “The people have to squeeze in between the furniture, they have very little to say and what they do say is hardly coherent – and yet the book is such a huge success.”

The five-minute online film is an unusual, affectionate and not entirely serious examination of the 2016 IKEA catalogue.

China Trade Mission Forges New Ties

SYDNEY /PRNewswire/ — On the completion of his first trade mission to Asia, Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres was pleased to see first-hand the demand for and interest in New South Wales (NSW) produce, services and technology.

Mr Ayres travelled to Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Shanghai to introduce the best of NSW to the Chinese market. He said the mission had strengthened bilateral ties.

A significant two-year agreement was reached between the NSW Government and Ctrip, China’s largest online travel agency. An MOU was signed which will deliver more marketing and promotional opportunities for Sydneyand regional NSW.

NSW will now export an additional $4 million worth of wine to China — including the first export of certified organic wine from NSW — alongside natural oats, baby formula, vitamins and other health products. Health and aged care, issues highlighted in the recent China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA), were also raised in a number of meetings.

International Slow Food Fest to Kick off in South Korea in October

NAMYANGJU, South Korea /PRNewswire/ — An international festival promoting the slow food movement as well as an all-round healthy lifestyle will take place in this provincial city in October, organizers said Thursday, providing a chance to enjoy farm-to-table foods and fun learning experiences.

Under the theme “Good Food, Good Life,” the Namyangju Slow Life International Festival will be held for 10 days starting Oct. 8 in the eponymous city located about 30 kilometers east of Seoul.

The festival encompasses three values — health, the environment and empathy — in order to create and share happiness, an organizing committee official said.

Delegates and tourists from some 40 countries along with those from throughout South Korea will take part in the festivities, during which various programs consisting of concerts, tasting sessions and other hands-on activities will be offered, according to the organizers.

A food show starring some of the most popular chefs from South Korea will be held during the festival, and visitors will also be able to appease their palates with traditional foods and beverages from a diverse mix of cultures.

The fair is the second of its kind to be held in Namyangju city, after it launched the Asio Gusto festival earlier in 2013. The city has since changed the name of the program and decided to make it a regular event to be run every two years.
