CPI Solutions Help SpareBank 1 Achieve Desired PUE with

leave a comment »

BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, England /PRNewswire/ — Using what they call “The Lego® Approach,” SpareBank 1, a Norway-based alliance of banking, insurance and holding companies, was able to improve its data center infrastructure and lower its Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) thanks to Chatsworth Products’ (CPI) flexible and innovative data center solutions.

SpareBank 1 teamed up with CPI and Coromatic, a vendor of data center solutions, to design a state-of-the-art data center tailored specifically to its organizational needs. The alliance wanted a solution that would fit into its existing environment and accommodate 200 kW of power and cooling to maintain the continuity of its operations.

To meet this unique installation requirement and to create the most efficient solution possible, SpareBank 1 selected CPI’s Hot Aisle Containment (HAC) Solution, Two- and Four-Post Racks, Evolution® Cable Managementand Accessories. This solution was chosen to help the alliance achieve its desired PUE goal of 1.3. CPI’s HAC Solution completely isolates hot exhaust air from IT equipment and removes it from the room, resulting in more efficient cooling units.

“For the design of the solution, I like the interoperability of CPI products. I can pick and choose and assemble a solution,” stated Magnus Askautrud, Business Development Manager for Coromatic.

SpareBank 1’s new data center not only supports the 1,000 people located in the building, but also 6,300 more employees at 352 additional branches across Norway, and online banking and insurance systems for the alliance’s 1.9 million customers.

Milestones of Innovation: In 1949, the Hansa 1500’s Pontoon Body Put BORGWARD Way Ahead of its Competitors

leave a comment »

STUTTGART, Germany /PRNewswire/ — In 1949 BORGWARD pulled ahead of its competitors when the Hansa 1500 set completely new standards for body design. The saloon was the Bremen-based automaker’s first new development after World War II. It helped to promote the rapid spread of a body design that had previously been unknown in Germany and the rest of Europe: the pontoon shape. Whereas all of the competitors’ post-war vehicles resembled pre-war products, BORGWARD had dared to make a clean break with the past. From that moment on, things like flared wheel arches and separate lamps were history. All of the company’s competitors were instantly relegated to the sidelines, and they feverishly tried to catch up. With the new design, the BORGWARD plants clearly forced the European automotive industry to take action. The Fiat 1500 (1950), the Ford 12 M (1952), the Opel Olympia (1953) and the Mercedes-Benz 180 (1953) were all latecomers produced by automakers that had been downright blind to this pioneering new trend in body design.

It’s no longer possible to determine how Carl F. W. Borgward came up with the new design. In an interview he stated that he had been inspired by the integrated wings of the Hanomag “Kommissbrot”, a small car from 1927 with a rear-mounted engine. Other sources suspect that he had seen initial photos of the new Kaiser K 100 and K 101 while he was an American prisoner of war from September 1945 to March 1946. These four-door models ushered in the inexorable advance of the pontoon body shape in the United States.

No matter where Carl F. W. Borgward got his idea from, he was clearly impressed by the new design’s obvious benefits for the customer. Pontoon bodies were unbeatable in the way they utilised space for the benefit of passengers and the boot. By reducing the size of the front surfaces without sacrificing internal space, pontoon bodies substantially improved aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. This was a particularly important issue for BORGWARD, which focused on aerodynamics early on. In addition, the pontoon shape provided designers with completely new opportunities for showcasing an automobile’s elegance. Thanks to Carl F. W. Borgward’s pioneering spirit, the new shape continued its triumphal advance throughout Europe. Pontoon styling is also known as three-box design, because the vehicles have separate “boxes” for the engine, the passenger compartment and the boot. Other American designers called the new styling a “greenhouse” design.

A far more important concern for the Bremen-based company after World War II was that the Hansa 1500 not only was the first new post-war product but also had a completely new look. Lacking any kind of “baroque” ornamentation, this plain saloon very convincingly combined aesthetics and customer utility. What’s more, the Hansa 1500 contained many other pioneering innovations such as electric direction indicator lights fitted as standard – a first for a German automobile.

The rigor with which Carl F. W. Borgward continued to develop the new pontoon styling at his company is also demonstrated by the Lloyd 300, which appeared only one year after the Hansa 1500 and systematically transferred the three-box design to a much more compact vehicle class. The styling was very compelling here as well.

The next step in the further development of the Hansa 1500 was also a pontoon-shaped two-door car. It is still considered one of the world’s most beautiful automobiles: the BORGWARD Isabella.

NI Drives Down Cost of Wireless Production Test

leave a comment »

-New PXI-based Wireless Test System optimized for speed, multiplies throughput on the production floor

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — NIWeek  NI (Nasdaq: NATI), the provider of platform-based systems that enable engineers and scientists to solve the world’s greatest engineering challenges, released theWireless Test System (WTS), a solution that dramatically lowers the cost of high-volume wireless manufacturing test. Although faced with the rising complexity of wireless test, companies can confidently reduce test costs and multiply throughput on the production floor with a system optimized for measurement speed and parallel test.

“Megatrends, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), will push more devices to include RF and sensor functionality, which has traditionally been expensive to test. But test cost shouldn’t limit innovation or the economic viability of a product,” said Olga Shapiro, program manager for measurement and instrumentation at Frost & Sullivan. “To remain profitable in the future, companies will need to rethink their approach for wireless test and embrace new paradigms. Because the WTS is built on the industry-proven PXI platform and backed with the market expertise of NI, we expect it to have significant impact on the profitability of the IoT.”

The WTS combines the latest advances in PXI hardware to offer a single platform for multi-standard, multi- DUT and multi-port testing. When used with flexible test sequencing software, such as the TestStand Wireless Test Module, manufacturers can significantly improve instrument utilization when testing multiple devices in parallel. The WTS integrates easily into a manufacturing line with ready-to-run test sequences for devices that use chipsets from suppliers like Qualcomm and Broadcom as well as integrated DUT and remote automation control. With these features, customers are seeing considerable efficiency gains from their RF test equipment and further reducing their cost of test.

“We tested multiple wireless technologies ranging from Bluetooth to WiFi to GPS and cellular all with the same equipment using the NI Wireless Test System,” said Markus Krauss, HARMAN/Becker Automotive Systems GmbH. “The WTS and NOFFZ’s RF test engineering expertise helped us significantly reduce test time and the time it took to get our test systems up and running.”

The WTS is the latest system from NI built on PXI hardware and LabVIEW and TestStand software (see theSemiconductor Test System launched in 2014). With support for wireless standards from LTE Advanced to 802.11ac to Bluetooth Low Energy, the WTS is designed for manufacturing test of WLAN access points, cellular handsets, infotainment systems and other multi-standard devices that include cellular, wireless connectivity and navigation standards. Software-designed PXI vector signal transceiver technology inside the WTS delivers superior RF performance in the manufacturing test environment and a platform that can scale with the evolving requirements of RF test.

-HVAC technologies for the built environment to take centre stage at Singapore Green Building Week as Italian show debuts in Asia

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — The Mostra Covegno Expocomfort (MCE) Asia exhibition will hold its inaugural international show in Singapore from 2 to 4 September at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre this year. Held outside of Milan, Italy, for the very first time, the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) exhibition will be focused on the Cooling, Water, Renewable Energy and the Heating sector.

“We have been experiencing extremities in the weather for the past couple of years now and demand for HVAC equipment is set to grow exponentially globally over the next few years,” said Pierini Massimiliano, Business Unit Director of MCE Italy. “There is a need for us to provide a sustainable solution, particularly in Asia which is experiencing rapid urbanization and development. We need to constantly innovate and create new technologies for HVAC equipment to be more environmentally friendly. With a platform like MCE, we hope to be able to create a one-stop business exchange of latest information within the HVAC industry.

Visitors to this year’s MCE Asia can expect to be exposed to adiverse mix of local and international companies such as RubinetterieBresciane, Itap,Galletti Group, CimberioValve, COES Company, Daikin Airconditioning Singapore and Panasonic Appliances Air-conditioning Systems. It will bring together more than 114exhibiting companiesfrom27 countries and regions to showcase the latest technologies in the HVAC sector, positioning itself as one of the leading business platforms for insights exchange on HVAC technology.

“As global temperatures continue to climb, there is the need for air conditioners to be both eco-friendly and efficient,” says Swen Tan, Consultant Sales Manager of Daikin Airconditioning Singapore. “Fortunately, the rapid pace at which technology is progressing, together with greater investments in green technology, allow for constant innovation to take place.  Looking forward to sharing our Smart Energy Saving technologies, we strongly believe that MCE Asia’s position as a knowledge-sharing platform will play a part in our collective efforts towards green innovation.”

Set against a backdrop of US$2.5 trillion to be spent on renewable technologies in Asia Pacific region by 2030[1], the MCE Asia exhibition will tie together the dual concept of energy saving and efficiency via innovative technologies or integrated systems with enriched living comfort through optimised indoor environment quality. The exhibition is targeted at specialised building professionals within the residential, commercial, industrial, institutional and hospitality sectors, and professionals who are concerned with the above evolving trends.

“We are continuously looking to provide a holistic platform for the exchange of green ideas that will engage our visitors. We are honored that MCE is partnering with us for their first foray outside of Italy. Greening in the HVAC industry has received huge amounts of attention over the last couple of years, and this is the opportune time to steer the conversation to ideas of sustainability. We hope that through creating conversations on this topic, we are encouraging companies that have the ability and technology to share their experience and solutions,” saidLouise Chua, Project Director of BEX Asia 2015 and MCE Asia 2015.

Walking the Green talk

The effects of climate change in Singapore are evident in its bouts of high temperatures as well as erratic thunderstorms. 2014 also saw the month that Singapore experienced its longest dry spell[2]. In the face of coping with more extreme temperatures and weather, there has been an increasing emphasis on energy-efficient chillers. The wide adoption of this technology, along with other green building features, saw an average of 25-30% energy savings in 2013. [3]

“In keeping up with urban planning and development, green building technology needs to be well-rounded, and be able to meet current and future needs of the community,” said Chua. “This requires constant innovation from developers, and every player plays a part in helping the green industry move forward.”

“In 2015 alone, we have experienced a series of blistering heat waves in Singapore and around the world. The demand for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment is set to grow exponentially,” saidSamuel Castrejon, International Sales Manager of Sumner Manufacturing, one of the exhibitors this year. “We have a responsibility to develop environmentally-friendly solutions to ensure that we do not further contribute to greenhouse gas emission and global warming. Through a platform like MCE Asia, it helps facilitate a global exchange of ideas and solutions, helping companies reduce their carbon footprint on the earth.”

At MCE Asia 2015, visitors can look forward to MostraXchange, a three-day seminar where a rich lineup of speakers will address pressing topics and research findings, ranging from the use of energy-saving valves in humid climates, to embracing cooling tower elimination in chillers, as well as the design and construction of energy efficient buildings. Bahnfleth, ASHRAE Presidential Member (2013 – 2014), Jay Egg, President of EggGeothermal Consulting, Man Kit Leung, Director of Sustainable DesigninRonald Lu & Partners as well as Marc Thuillard, Head of Research of Belimo Automation.

LONDON /PRNewswire/ — Kerry Logistics Network Limited (“Kerry Logistics”; Stock Code 636.HK), a leading logistics service provider in Asia, has secured a contract with Debenhams, a leading British multinational retailer, to support the department store’s growing export market in the Middle East.

Kerry Logistics will handle all airfreight from Debenhams’ distribution centre (DC) in Peterborough, UK, to various destinations in the Middle East, including Dubai, Bahrain, Qatar, Egypt, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

“We are delighted to have Kerry Logistics on board as our air export logistics provider. Kerry Logistics is able to offer us innovative supply chain solutions that support an important growth area of our business as we expand our stores internationally. Their people and network coverage give us complete confidence that we are partnering with someone who will continue to add values to our export operations,” said Steve Bowkis, Director of Imports and Exports, Debenhams.

Kerry Logistics will provide value-added services at origin including garment re-labeling, tagging and quality control.

“We offer a flexible and innovative approach, as well as a competitive value proposition, and have solid experience of working in the region. Other logistics providers are committed to a strict hub-and-spoke system and are dependent on Heathrow, where space is getting more limited, but we can be flexible and can work around our clients’ requirements,” said Emma Rowlands, UK Sales Director, Kerry Logistics.

The Middle East is a key growth market for Debenhams, which trades out of 246 stores, across 28 countries, and is available online in 70 countries.
