Economic Expectations for Europe Strongly Influenced by Greek Crisis

Results of GfK Consumer Climate Europe for the second quarter of 2015

The lengthy negotiations between Greece and its creditors have clearly influenced the mood of consumers in most European countries in the second quarter of this year. Particularly in Eastern European countries, however, the crisis between Russia and the Ukraine is also playing a major role. Nevertheless, the GfK Consumer Climate EU28 has increased by 1 point overall since March, to 10.8 points. These are results for the GfK Consumer Climate forEurope from 15 European countries.

The Greek crisis largely set the mood for European consumers in the second quarter of this year, and the economic expectations in several individual countries has stagnated or decreased as a result. At the time of the poll, which was carried out in the first two weeks of June, the negotiations between Greece and its creditors had increasingly come to a head. The recent climax (the projected failure of the negotiations, potential closure of Greek banks, the referendum and then the last minute agreed deal) is therefore not reflected in this survey.  It is assumed that the mood of the people in Europe, primarily within the Monetary Union, may deteriorate even more significantly over the summer, depending on the Greek outcome. This applies, in particular, to countries like Germany, Italy, France, andSpain, which either bear a high share of Greece’s debts or are also struggling with a difficult economic situation.

The developments of the income expectations as well as the propensity to buy vary among the different countries. Country-specific influences in the second quarter were stronger here than the possible effects of Greece’s exit from the European Monetary Union. Nevertheless, the GfK Consumer Climate EU28 has increased by 1 point overall since March to 10.8 for the second quarter.

Malaysian Scientists Publish the Very Latest Results on Colorectal Cancer Screening Using the M2-PK Rapid Test in the Renowned Journal PLOS ONE

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia /PRNewswire/ — Scientists from the Department of Medicine at the University of Malaysia have recently presented the very latest data from a study on colorectal cancer screening using the M2-PK stool test in the renowned publication PLOS ONE. These latest results for the M2-PK test from the cancer specialist Professor Khean-Lee Goh – one of the most renowned experts in Asia on this subject – and his colleagues confirm once again the exceptionally high capability and accuracy of the M2-PK test for colorectal cancer screening.

Professor Goh investigated the enyzme biomarker M2-PK in a patient group with 100 colorectal cancer cases and a population-based control group of 200 healthy people. The M2-PK test detected 93% of colorectal cancers. Furthermore, it recognized 97.5% of the control group as truly healthy. The positive predictive value for colorectal cancer was 94.9% and the predictive value to exclude colorectal cancer (negative predictive value) was 96.5%. The overall accuracy of the M2-PK test was 96%.

The investigators also made two additional important findings. Firstly, the M2-PK test has a very high detection rate (sensitivity) for right-sided (85.7%) as well as for left-sided colorectal cancers (94.2%). This result is especially important because right-sided colorectal cancers are more often missed than left-sided with conventional screening methods.

Secondly, M2-PK had almost the same very high rate of detection (sensitivity) across all four tumour stages (stage 1 = 94.1%; stage 2 = 88.9%; stage 3 = 96.4%; stage 4 = 90.3%).

McGraw-Hill Education Acquires Equity Stake in busuu, Global Mobile Language Learning Platform

A joint venture of Disney and its partner Shanghai Shendi Group, Shanghai Disneyland is designed to appeal to Chinese guests – taking the best of Disney and delivering it in a way that is created especially for this audience. It will extend the 60-year legacy of Disney Parks around the globe.

Hotels and Airlines have minimal representation amongst the most popular travel apps finds Strategy Analytics

-OTAs account for more than 30% of the 25 most popular travel apps with Airbnb and leading the way

BOSTON /PRNewswire/ — New data from the June Travel Analytics’ Monthly iPhone Travel App Tracker  covering 150 individual countries  indicates severe regionality of travel apps which are most popular in Europe accounting for 5.5% of the most popular free applications whereas the category accounts for just 1.6% in Africa.

The data should help travel companies create more targeted global distribution strategies with appeal to local markets. One key facet, however, is nearly universal across the globe – travel apps are seen as a local-first apps. The most popular apps are navigation – Maps.ME appeared in 100% of countries each week in June. Other popular apps include Uber, Yelp and Foursquare  all appearing the most frequently across the 150 countries analyzed. For hotels and airlines competing to reach connected travelers the lack of momentum placed on their apps should be concerning as ever more resources are invested in developing applications.

In fact, of the 25 most popular apps 8 were OTAs (Airbnb,,, Expedia, Kayak, trivago, Hotel Tonight and momondo), 2 were airline apps (Lufthansa, United) and 0 were hotel apps. The dominance of OTAs, combined with the lack of branded hotel and airline apps demonstrate how iPhone owners want to book travel experiences and are putting OTAs in a position of power on the mobile device. This will be exploited as more consumers in more countries begin using mobile devices for travel bookings.

Asia Plantation Capital Launches Tree Eye Monitoring

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — After several years of detailed research into the best and most efficient methods available to monitor the growth and provide additional security to its high value plantations,Singapore-based Asia Plantation Capital has applied for a patent on a new system which is based on computerised aerial drones, linked to a central control system and programmed to monitor their plantations.

This new system has been successfully tested over the last nine months on plantations in Thailand and is now set for implementation on all the company’s high value plantations and installations.

“Over the last few years, we have tested and installed various systems on our plantations as part of our constant policy of research and development. This includes remote sensors for soil temperature, rainfall, nutrients, tree growth sensors and humidity which are supplied by Singapore-based Bio machines,” says CEO Barry Rawlinson. “Real time camera monitoring has always been proven to be problematic on large scale plantations that stretch over substantial areas.”

The use of these latest aerial camera drones, which are equipped with GPS tracking and the function to set pre-determined flight paths, allows for consistent coverage of plantations, delivery of valuable real-time growth and photographic data to management teams on the ground.

Asia Plantation Capital is working on developing this into a web portal application to allow clients and tree owners to regularly receive updated aerial images of trees on the plantations. Previous systems have proved unreliable due to extremities of climate and the remote nature of many plantation sites, causing fixed cameras to fog up and relay poor images.

Additionally, drones can cover huge areas in minutes, and also allow Asia Plantation Capital’s trained operators to zoom in on the areas they want, even individual trees. The added security benefits include being able to patrol large scale plantations in minutes, at any time of day and night, with night vision cameras being a massive benefit.

First developed in-house by Asia Plantation Capital’s IT departments and forestry managers, the company intends to further develop this technology for commercial usage by other plantation and agricultural companies under the Asia Plantation Capital brand.

Major uses of the Tree Eye System include monitoring work progress, harvest processes and providing physical security measures. In addition, the system brings, to daily operations, an entirely new monitoring facility with the ability to reach inaccessible areas in minutes. Some of the species grown on plantations, like agarwood, teak and palm oil, have extremely high values. Ensuring the safe delivery from plantation and processing to the end product is always a principle concern of plantation owners — one which Asia Plantation Capital puts to rest.
