Global businesses turn to wind power

leave a comment »

— Global Wind Day is celebrated on 15 June

BRUSSELS /PRNewswire/ — As the global climate crisis deepens, and political attention to climate increases in the run up to the Paris Climate summit in December, on Global Wind Day we celebrate the fact that more and more companies are turning to clean, reliable and cost-effective wind energy to power their businesses. Global Wind Day is a worldwide event that occurs annually on 15 June. It is a day for discovering wind energy, its power and the possibilities it holds to reshape our energy systems, decarbonise our economies and boost jobs and growth.

Wind energy has become fully mainstream and is today one of the fastest growing industrial sectors in the world, attracting $100 billion in investment in 2014. This shows that wind power doesn’t only make sense environmentally and socially, but it is also cost-competitive. Onshore wind power is now cheaper than conventional energy sources in an expanding number of markets worldwide.

“Wind energy has become the favoured solution for large companies who need a reliable and consistent energy flow to power factories, operations and data centers,” said Malgosia Bartosik, Acting CEO of the European Wind Energy Association. Earlier this month Swedish furniture giant IKEA announced a EUR 1 billion commitment to wind, solar and climate action. Other companies running their businesses increasingly on wind power include BMW, General Motors, Nissan, Honda, CEMEX, Heineken, LEGO, IKEA, Facebook, Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Apple.

“Climate change is happening faster than expected, but so is the transition to renewable energy. As businesses become increasingly aware of the progress in technology and falling costs we are seeing a rapid change in investment patterns,” said Steve Sawyer, Secretary General of the Global Wind Energy Council. “Companies like IKEA pave the way for a fossil free future and give an important example for others to follow,” Sawyer concluded.

leave a comment »

— IBM Joins Spark Community, Plans to Educate More Than 1 Million Data Scientists

ARMONK, N.Y., /PRNewswire/ — IBM (NYSE:IBM) today announced a major commitment toApache®Spark™, potentially the most important new open source project in a decade that is being defined by data. At the core of this commitment, IBM plans to embed Spark into its industry-leading Analytics and Commerceplatforms, and to offer Spark as a service on IBM Cloud. IBM will also put more than 3,500 IBM researchers and developers to work on Spark-related projects at more than a dozen labs worldwide; donate its breakthrough IBM SystemML machine learning technology to the Spark open source ecosystem; and educate more than one million data scientists and data engineers on Spark.

As data and analytics are embedded into the fabric of business and society –from popular apps to the Internet of Things (IoT) –Spark brings essential advances to large-scale data processing. First, it dramatically improves the performance of data dependent apps. Second, it radically simplifies the process of developing intelligent apps, which are fueled by data.

To further accelerate open source innovation for the Spark ecosystem, IBM is taking the following actions:

  • IBM will build Spark into the core of the company’s analytics and commerce platforms.
  • IBM’s Watson Health Cloud will leverage Spark as a key underpinning for its insight platform, helping to deliver faster time to value for medical providers and researchers as they access new analytics around population health data.
  • IBM will open source its breakthrough IBM SystemML machine learning technology and collaborate withDatabricks to advance Spark’s machine learning capabilities.
  • IBM will offer Spark as a Cloud service on IBM Bluemix to make it possible for app developers to quickly load data, model it, and derive the predictive artifact to use in their app.
  • IBM will commit more than 3,500 researchers and developers to work on Spark-related projects at more than a dozen labs worldwide, and open a Spark Technology Center in San Francisco for the Data Science and Developer community to foster design-led innovation in intelligent applications.
  • IBM will educate more than 1 million data scientists and data engineers on Spark through extensive partnerships with AMPLabDataCampMetiStreamGalvanize and Big Data University MOOC.

“IBM has been a decades long leader in open source innovation. We believe strongly in the power of open source as the basis to build value for clients, and are fully committed to Spark as a foundational technology platform for accelerating innovation and driving analytics across every business in a fundamental way,” said Beth Smith, General Manager, Analytics Platform, IBM Analytics. “Our clients will benefit as we help them embrace Spark to advance their own data strategies to drive business transformation and competitive differentiation.”

Spark Drives Business Transformation for IBM Clients

Spark has grown quickly in popularity among developers and data scientists as an essential platform for helping organizations more easily integrate Big Data into applications, and is quickly gaining momentum with IBM clients looking to transform business decision-making:

  • Real-time transportation planning software from Optibus is changing the way public transport is organized. “Spark, together with IBM, provides a highly scalable platform for Optibus, making it easy for us to expand our software as a service offering into new markets, and helps us simplify deployment, maintenance and application development for transportation companies worldwide,” said Amos Haggiag, Optibus CTO and Co-Founder.
  • Findability Sciences, a global consulting and contextual data technology solutions company, is using IBM Analytics and Spark to help clients tap into the power of Big Data. “Apache Spark with IBM BigInsights has given us tremendous capacity for our implementations for small and medium businesses, where MapReduce was not efficient. With Spark, the performance has improved multi fold. We’re now able to process streaming data from IoT devices and offer analytics for data in motion for things like traffic, commuters and parking,”saidAnand Mahurkar, CEO of Findability Sciences.
  • Independence Blue Cross (IBC) is the largest health insurer in the Philadelphia area, serving more than two million people in the region and seven million nationwide. It’s using Spark to help drive product innovation and develop new services. “Apache Spark is quickly maturing into a power tool for development of machine-learning analytic applications. It allows our IBC researchers and academic partners to work together more seamlessly, which means we can get new claims and benefits apps up and out to customers much faster,” said Darwin Leung, Director of Informatics at Independence Blue Cross.
  • IBM, NASA, and the SETI Institute are collaborating to analyze terabytes of complex deep space radio signals using Spark’s machine learning capabilities in a hunt for patterns that might betray the presence of intelligent extraterrestrial life. “With Spark as a Service on Bluemix, we’ll be able to work with IBM to develop promising new ways to analyze signal data as we hunt for evidence of intelligence elsewhere in the cosmos. This is an exciting example of synergy in the service of science,”said Dr. Seth Shostak, Senior Astronomer and Director of the Center for SETI Research.

IBM is one of four founding members of the UC Berkeley AMPLab, where Spark was first invented in 2009, and as a result participates in multi-day research retreats, provides advice and real-world insight, and interacts closely with AMPLab researchers on projects of mutual interest. “As a sponsor of the AMPLab, IBM contributes to the greater Spark community and provides guidance for the continued evolution and improvement of the Berkeley Data Analytics Stack, the open source platform of which Spark is a key component,” said Professor Michael Franklin, Director of the UC Berkeley AMPLab.

Spark is agile, fast and easy to use. And because it is open source, it is improved continuously by a worldwide community. Over the course of the next few months, IBM scientists and engineers will work with the Apache Spark open community to rapidly accelerate access to advanced machine learning capabilities and help drive speed-to-innovation in the development of smart business apps. By contributing SystemML, IBM will help data scientists iterate faster to address the changing needs of business and to enable a growing ecosystem of app developers to apply deep intelligence into every thing.

— New 17-day service links Zhengzhou to Hamburg twice weekly
— Eastbound service from Hamburg to Zhengzhou runs twice weekly from July 2015
— Full container and Less-than-container load options available

SHANGHAI /PRNewswire/ — DHL Global Forwarding, leading provider of air, sea and road freight services in Europe and Asia, is further expanding its pioneering multimodal services in China with a new twice-weekly service betweenZhengzhou and Hamburg via Poland. The new 17-day service will offer customers the flexibility of DHL Railconnect, the less-than-container load (LCL) service, as well as a full-container option, DHL Railline. DHL now offers three regular multimodal rail services between China and Europe from Zhengzhou, Suzhou and Chengduwhich span across central, eastern and western China. The three strategic Chinese cities rank within China’s top 10 provinces in GDP last year, amounting to CNY 12.9 million[1] (EUR1.85 million).

DHL Multimodal Network
DHL Multimodal Network

DHL’s multimodal rail solution offers customers delivery time reductions of between 10 and 21 days compared to sea freight, depending on origin and destination pairs. In addition, customers seeking environmentally friendly solutions can also expect a fall of CO2 emissions of up to 90% compared to airfreight.

“With China’s ‘One Belt, One Road’ strategy focusing on enhancing connections between Asia and Europe and promoting international trade, DHL is extending its lead in the ChinaEurope rail freight market by developing additional routes,” said Kelvin Leung, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding Asia Pacific. “Our multimodal network covers a wide geographical area between Asia and Europe, offering seamless connections with solutions that ensure complete supply chain visibility and a faster-to-market option for our customers.”

In addition to the westbound ZhengzhouHamburg service, the eastbound HamburgZhengzhou service will also be available to customers moving cargo from Europe to Asia. A true door-to-door service, DHL’s multimodal solutions connect China to Europe by picking up goods from any location in China for delivery to Europe – and vice-versa.

Steve Huang, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding China said: “Zhengzhou, Suzhou and Chengdu are key economic centers of trade and development in China. Their strategic locations with close proximity to main Chinese cities of economic importance such as Shanghai, Nanjing, Dalian and Shenzhen are integral to a successful multimodal network spanning China to Europe. Offering multiple loading points across China has created business opportunities for customers in many industries and we are investing to expand our network to further increase these opportunities.”

Zhengzhou, a hub for finance, commerce and resource distribution in central China, is fast becoming one of the largest economic centers in China with its increasing international and domestic investment. Suzhou, one ofChina’s foremost cities for foreign investment due to its proximity to Shanghai and lower operating costs, has always enjoyed a strong economy based primarily on its large manufacturing sector. Chengdu is the country’s western center of logistics, commerce, finance, science and technology, as well as a hub for transportation and communication. It is also an important base for manufacturing and agriculture. Together, the provincial GDP of the three cities make up 20% of China’s GDP last year.

The new ZhengzhouHamburg service complements DHL Global Forwarding’s established multimodal network. The first is a weekly scheduled block train service along the trans-Kazakh West Corridor rail service that originates from Chengdu, a hub for high tech goods, automotive and other industries, and the main distribution center for Western China, to Lodz in Poland. The second — also weekly — via the trans-Siberian North Corridor serves the manufacturing and commercial centers of Shanghai, Suzhou and surrounding areas and runs from Suzhou to Warsaw.

In 2014, DHL pioneered the first temperature-controlled ChinaEurope rail service, providing customers with temperature-sensitive products year-round access to this cost-effective shipping route regardless of the weather. DHL also launched a sea connection last year that links Japan into the network which provides more customers in North Asia an additional alternative to sea and airfreight, and access to benefits such as reduced transit times, costs and CO2 emissions.

Green Forest Product & Tech Pte. Ltd.’s two Exclusive Suppliers Of Mangrove Timber Products Obtained FSC(R) 100% Forest Management Certificates

leave a comment »

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — Green Forest Product & Tech Pte. Ltd. today announced that two of its exclusive suppliers of mangrove timber product, PT Kandelia Alam (PT KliA) and PT Bina Ovivipari Semesta (PT BiOS), based in Kubu Raya, West Kalimantan, have obtained the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) 100% Forest Management (FM) certification on 18/05/2015.

This is a historical achievement, as it is a first for any “Natural” Forest Management Enterprise in South East Asiathat serves the pulp and paper industry. This is also the first FSC® 100% FM certification ever awarded to a Mangrove Forest management enterprise worldwide. FSC® 100% FM certification requires the most stringent sustainability principles to be met, and obtaining this certification helped verify PT KliA and PT BiOS forest management practices. Both companies supply mangrove woodchips for the pulp and paper Industry through PT Bina Silva Nusa (PT BSN) chipmill of Kubu Raya, West Kalimantan, that has previously obtained the FSC® Chain of Custody certification. PT BiOS also produces high grade mangrove “binchotan” charcoal to export to Japan.

“We congratulate PT Kandelia Alam and PT Bina Ovivipari Semesta for their achievement. This also proves that it is possible for mid-size FMEs to achieve our stringent criteria for FSC® 100% FM certification,” said Hartono Prabowo, Representative for FSC® Indonesia.

Both companies, with a combined total of 28,220 hectares of land, were certified with the help of Asia Pacific Consulting Solutions (APCS) acting as a group manager and WWF/GFTN as a partner, with funding from The Borneo Initiative. Green Forest was actively involved in various facets of the certification process.

“From the management of PT KliA and PT BiOS, we would like to thank TBI, APCS, and WWF/GFTN for the tremendous amount of money and technical resources. Without them, we would not be able to accomplish this. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our customer, Green Forest Product & Tech, for driving us and believing we can achieve this landmark certification,” Ir Fairus Mulia, President Director of PT KliA, stated.

Wim Ellenbroek, Programme Director of The Borneo Initiative, commented, “Our mission is to promote certified forest management as a way to end forest degradation and deforestation. This cooperation with PT BiOS and PT KliA is proof that sustainable production and nature conservation can be combined to preserve range area for endangered species such as proboscis monkeys. We greatly respect the tremendous effort that the management of PT BiOS and PT KliA put into certified forest management, thereby preserving range area for the endangered proboscis monkeys, one of the high conservation values in Borneo that we hope to protect with our funding program.”

WWF Indonesia has engaged both companies since 2011, first through the proboscis monkey population identification within the mangrove forest under both PT KliA’s and PT BiOS’ concessions. Afterward, support has been given by WWF Indonesia through the Global Forest Trade Network (GFTN) program in helping implement the best management practices that encompass forest planning, the High Conservation Value Forest assessment and its management plan with extensive monitoring of biodiversity, especially on the endangered proboscis monkey. Joko Sarjito, GFTN Indonesia Manager, added, “We have proven that conservation management to protect the proboscis monkey habitat can be an integral part of mangrove harvesting activities. By obtaining the FSC® 100% FM certificate, the forest management system on both concessions is sustainable and can support and protect the endemic habitat of the proboscis monkey.”

“As a buyer and the largest exporter of mangrove products for the last 45 years, we are very proud to see that our suppliers were able to meet such a difficult challenge to ensure sustainable utilization of this wonderful resource and its relevant ecosystem. With FSC® 100% FM certification, we hope to enlarge the market for mangrove products worldwide. The economic gain from sustainable use can be invested back into protecting the mangrove forest and ensuring the survival of endangered species,” Muljadi Tantra, CFO and Deputy Managing Director, commented.

Mangrove related products have been undervalued and perceived by many to be environmentally unfriendly. This is largely due to the bad practices in the 1960s and 1970s, where most concessions clear-cut the forest without any consideration for regeneration or ecological impact. There were around 15 mangrove FMEs inIndonesia in the late ’70s. Today, only 3 mangrove FMEs still exist in Indonesia, all under the exclusive supply agreement with Green Forest.

The two concessions proved that mangrove forests can be sustainably utilized, and they have achieved such a high accolade in the form of this FSC® 100% FM certificate.  There is hope that a policy toward sustainable natural forest utilization will be encouraged, as opposed to unsustainable conversion to aquacultures or plantations that were the primary cause of mangrove deforestation throughout South East Asia. Indonesia still has approximately 3 million hectares of highly productive mangrove forest left, some of which play an important role in providing ecosystem services. It should be in everyone’s interest to maintain or even enlarge mangrove areas through rehabilitation, sustainable use, combined with the right conservation polices, while avoiding unsustainable conversion altogether.

IAPH World Ports Conference in Hamburg Shows: The Port of the Future is Smart and Inspired by Other Industries Like Aviation

leave a comment »

HAMBURG, Germany, June 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ —

More than 900 guests spend the first week of June in Hamburg to discuss the future of international ports. There are only few places where the various actors in logistics meet at such close quarters as in ports. Maritime shipping, rail and road must be linked in a logistics hub that is as efficient as possible. For instance impulses came from the world of air transport. “Only smart ports will be able to meet the growing demands for efficiency, economy, safety and environmental compatibility,” says Bernd Appel, Managing Director of Lufthansa Industry Solutions.

The Port of Hamburg is one of the most modern and efficient ports in the world and already today a showroom for the “Port of the Future” and “Industry 4.0”:

“smartPORT is more than just a word – it is a long-term strategy involving firm projects. We aimed with the conference, not just to display visions to our visitors, but to present specific projects,” said Jens Meier, Chairman of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) Management Board.

CISCO and T-Systems launched in cooperation with HPA, Europe’s first smartRoad in the Port of Hamburg, using Internet-of-Everything technology. NXP Semiconductors inducted an intelligent traffic light, to avoid traffic jams in the port. Short before the conference opening, Becker Marine System’s LNG Barge supplied for the first time low-emission power for a cruise ship.

Along with intelligent solutions for port traffic and freight flows, other topics of discussions and debates included the compatibility of the environment and the port business, legal questions related to the port industry, opportunities for and/or derived from the cruise sector, and Clean-Air.

DUBLIN, June 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ —

Circa USD469 million investment

A consortium led by global wind and solar company Mainstream Renewable Power was today awarded Preferred Bidder status by the Department of Energy in South Africa for two large-scale wind energy projects with a total generation capacity of 250 megawatts. The award was made under the fourth round of the South African Government’s Renewable Energy Procurement Programme and the two wind farms represent an investment of approximately USD469 million. The date for financial close has not yet been released by the Department of Energy.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130606/618541 )

Mainstream has been awarded a total of 848 megawatts of wind and solar projects under this programme since the first award in 2011, which is more than any other developer. In addition to the projects awarded today Mainstream is currently constructing three wind farms in South Africa’s Northern Cape, totalling 360MW which it was awarded under Round 3 of the programme. Last year the company delivered three wind and solar facilities into commercial operation in South Africa under the first round of the programme.

Commenting on the announcement Mainstream’s Barry Lynch, Managing Director Onshore Procurement, Construction and Operations said: “Mainstream is delighted that the South African Government has, once again, placed its trust in us to deliver more large-scale renewable power plant into commercial operation. Here in South Africa we have already demonstrated this capability by delivering three world-class wind and solar farms into commercial operation safely, on time and on budget last year, and we currently have a further three wind farms under construction in the Northern Cape.”

He continued: “Renewable energy ticks three important boxes for South Africa’s energy needs. Firstly, the cost of these projects is now cheaper than new coal-fired generation. Secondly, they can be brought into commercial operation at the speed required and thirdly, they meet the scale needed to address the country’s growing electricity demand. Dissatisfaction in Atopic Dermatitis Treatment Revealed; Clear Opportunities for New Entrants

NUREMBERG, Germany, June 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ —

Over four out of 10 physicians and six out of 10 patients are not satisfied with the level of control achieved for moderate to severe adult patients treated with high potency topical steroids.
91 percent of moderate to severe adults receiving high potency topical steroids are expected to repeat this same treatment.

Latest results from GfK Disease Atlas, a real-world evidence program linking physician- and patient-reported treatment data, reveals major gaps in satisfaction levels for the treatment of atopic dermatitis.

The international survey of physicians and patients shows that 43 percent of physicians treating moderate to severe adult atopic dermatitis patients with high potency topical steroids are not satisfied with the level of control achieved. And dissatisfaction among the patients themselves stands at 66 percent.

Worse yet, patients expect to be dissatisfied: 92 percent agree that their doctor explained to them what to expect from this treatment.

Results also reveal repeated use of high potency topical steroids among moderate to severe adult patients, with 91 percent receiving this therapy set to repeat this treatment, according to the prescribing physician.

These same patterns are seen with another common therapy for moderate to severe atopic dermatitis: oral steroids, with similar high dissatisfaction levels amongst physicians and patients, and similar repeat use.

“The lack of new therapies for atopic dermatitis means that patients are often cycled through the same old treatment options, such as topical steroids and oral steroids,” said Alison Rose, Immunology & Dermatology Therapy Director at GfK. “But the low satisfaction level with these habitual treatments that we are seeing among both doctors and patients indicates huge potential for any players entering this market with new therapy options.”

GfK will be sharing further insights on dermatology at the World Congress of Dermatology June 8-13 in Vancouver, Canada, via a Feature Poster on “Analysis of physician and patient perceptions of chronic hand eczema – a global survey.”

About the research survey

GfK Disease Atlas for atopic dermatitis covers eight countries, delivering patient level data from over 4,000 pediatric and adult atopic dermatitis patients, together with insights from over 800 physicians. Similar programs are also available for acne, psoriasis or rheumatology.
