SEOUL, South Korea /PRNewswire/ — A new organic food expo is set to take place in South Korea’s central agricultural town of Goeson in September, bringing together two major organic food bodies for the first time, organizers said Wednesday.

Organic food expo to kick off in Goesan in Sept.

The 2015 Goesan International Organic Expo will kick off on Sept. 18 in the mountainous town in North Chungcheong Province, for a 24-day run under the theme “Organic Life, Science Meets the Public.

The upcoming expo is expected to help cement the inland province as “the new continent for organic foods” as well as “the Mecca for the organic industry.”

North Chungcheong Governor Lee Si-jong said the much-anticipated expo will help boost the province’s agricultural exports during a ceremony held earlier in the day in Seoul to promote the agricultural fair.

“The Goesan Organic Expo will serve as a spring board for North Chungcheong Province to promote its superb agricultural produce on the international stage and help the province to boldly use strategy to boost exports,” Governor Lee said.

The governor noted that the upcoming event will be first of its kind which will gather together the world’s top two organic food bodies, the International Society of Organic Agriculture Research and the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements.

“This will become a global festival which opens the door to a new world for organic foods,” he said.

The organizing committee is pushing to invite more than 250 local and foreign firms to join the fair with the goal of luring in 660,000 visitors, including 40,000 foreign visitors.

Governor Lee signed an agreement with Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon to solicit cooperation from the capital city.

“The province will try to appeal to the rich in China with its high-quality organic produce at a time when cheap imported agricultural goods are flooding the market,” Huh Kyung-jae, an official from the organizing committee, said. “This expo will lay the groundwork for that.”

Entrepreneurs will be a leading source of job creation this year

leave a comment »

— 47% of entrepreneurs expect to increase their global workforce this year
— Entrepreneurs increasingly confident in the global economy
— Strong entrepreneurial ambitions among young people – 65% want to run their own business “at some point”

MONACO /PRNewswire/ — Entrepreneurs are leading global job creation, with 47% of entrepreneurs expecting to increase their total global workforce this year. This is according to the EY global job creation and youth entrepreneurship survey 2015, a study into the impact entrepreneurship has on the global jobs market that asked 2,345 entrepreneurs about their hiring plans. The survey also asked 2,807 young people about their entrepreneurial ambitions and found that more than half of young people (65%) want to be entrepreneurs at some point in their careers.

Entrepreneurs lead job creation

While 47% of entrepreneurs globally expect to increase their total workforce in the next 12 months, this rises to 77% among those that have competed in EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year Program worldwide. These figures from entrepreneurs contrast strikingly with the hiring plans of senior executives at large corporates, with 29% of them expecting to create jobs in the next year, as reported in EY’s recently released Global Capital Confidence Barometer.

Mark Weinberger, Global Chairman & CEO of EY, says:

“The global economy is on the road to sustained recovery, but growth is slow. One often missed opportunity to fuel growth is empowering and supporting entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs continue to defy global trends in their levels of economic confidence and plans for workforce expansion, and this survey clearly shows that. Governments and business should work together with entrepreneurs to create the right ecosystems for success.”

Job growth driven by soaring confidence

The survey shows entrepreneurs have had a dramatic uptick in positive sentiment toward the economy, with 71% reporting confidence in the economic direction of their domestic market and 66% confident in the economic direction of the global economy (up from 46% in the 2014 survey).

There is, however, clear geographical deviation, with China (95%), India (90%) and Middle East/North Africa(MENA) (90%), showing the highest confidence in the global economy, and France (52%), Australia (51%) andJapan (49%) showing the lowest, which is a reflection of overall economic conditions in those geographies.

Despite rising confidence, entrepreneurs are mindful of the risks, citing negative market conditions as the top perceived business threat (31%), suggesting that global instability is still on the radar of the world’s businesses. In the UK (29%) and Germany (35%), red tape/bureaucracy is cited as the number one perceived threat, while in the US a skills shortage is singled out as the top business threat (27%).

Hiring is increasingly international

Entrepreneurs are increasingly looking abroad to expand their workforces, with 47% expecting to do so in the next year. Emerging markets lead the way, with global hires most likely in MENA (74%), China (68%) and India(63%). Young entrepreneurs are more likely to hire abroad than older ones, with 69% of those under 35 expecting to hire globally in the next year. This is despite a lack of access to funding (43%) and negative economic factors (43%) that were reported as key barriers by our youth respondents.

The sectors most likely to hire internationally in the next year are cleantech (75%), followed closely by biotech/pharma (74%), with professional services (26%) and transportation, travel and tourism (15%) the least likely.

Maria Pinelli, EY’s Global Vice Chair of Strategic Growth Markets, says:

“Entrepreneurs have always been pioneers looking for new opportunities, pushing the boundaries of what is possible and helping the global economy work better through their innovations and drive.

“Their appetite to hire abroad, especially among younger entrepreneurs, shows that today’s marketplace is a global one, and creates huge opportunities for entrepreneurs with the right ideas, the right support and the determination to grow. It’s clear that entrepreneurs aren’t the only ones who benefit when they start a business, so it’s vital that governments, corporates and entrepreneurs work together to create an environment that encourages and nurtures the entrepreneurial job creators of tomorrow.”

Entrepreneurs are focused on leaving a legacy

The survey finds that entrepreneurs are driven by more than financial gain. Thirty-eight percent cite leaving a positive legacy behind as the “top driver for starting a business outside of goals relating to turnover and profitability”. Other key motivations include making a positive contribution to the wider community (36%) and inspiring others to follow their aspirations (32%).

Entrepreneurs also show a strong commitment to supporting and nurturing young people.

Forty-one percent are providing internships and apprenticeships, peaking at 61% in China. Entrepreneurs that have competed in the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ Program worldwide are ahead of the curve in this respect, being almost twice as likely to mentor young people, or provide internships and apprenticeships compared to the rest of the world’s entrepreneurs.

Young people have entrepreneurial ambitions, but need support

For the first time this year, we talked to 2,807 young people aged 18 to 25 in education or involved in the jobs market, to get an idea of their career aspirations and find out how entrepreneurship fits into their plans. Many have entrepreneurial ambitions, with 65% planning to run their own business at some point in their careers, 27% immediately and 38% after working for someone else first. Indeed, one in four (25%) of young people have already started drawing up a business plan.

Notably, what young people with entrepreneurial ambitions most value is guidance and support from today’s entrepreneurs. A “hands-on” internship and mentoring from a leading entrepreneur are seen as the most likely to help them fulfill their goals (39%). It is striking therefore that only 36% say they feel they get enough support from local entrepreneurs, despite 79% of entrepreneurs feeling they do enough to support young people.

At EY, we support youth with entrepreneurial ambitions, through the alliances and initiatives we partner with around the world such as Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, Endeavour and Youth Business International, and the 40,000 young people a year we hire and train.

Funding is the biggest barrier to success

In forging ahead with their business aspirations, young people are very much aware of the challenges they face. Topping the list of barriers that could prevent young people from fulfilling their ambitions is a lack of access to funding and negative economic factors (both 43%). Other barriers include competition (25%) and lack of self-belief (25%).

Weinberger concludes: “With an estimated 75 million unemployed young people around the world, we must harness the ambition and optimism displayed by youth or we risk a lost generation of young people, with long-term personal and economic costs. There is an urgent need for business leaders, entrepreneurs and policy-makers to offer young people the support they need to fulfill their potential, through funding, but also through hands-on support, mentoring, job opportunities and on-the-job training.”

Facebook Building A YouTube Of News Publishers says Strategy Analytics

leave a comment »

— Bild, Spiegel, BBC, Guardian, NBC and New York Times among early publishers

BOSTON /PRNewswire/ — Strategy Analytics sees Facebook’s newly launched hosted news publishing platform, Instant Articles, as a first step to a new business model to deliver news, and a shift of power between the news publishers and social networks.

Logo –

A new report from Strategy Analytics’ Wireless Media Strategies (WMS) service, titled “Instant Articles: YouTube for News Publishers?” examines the operation of Facebook’s Instant Articles platform and its potential significance on the news publishing industry and social networks, hitherto its channel partners.

With the new platform, Facebook will host on its own servers the news stories contributed by partners to deliver a better and smoother reading experience on smartphones. If the publishers sell the advertising inventory by themselves they keep all the advertising revenue; or they take 70% if they decide to sell advertising through the ad network Facebook Audience Network.

“With a superior user experience and a strong lineup of partners, such as The New York Times, the BBC and the Spiegel of the world on board, Instant Articles is carrying much stronger momentum than Facebook’s earlier initiative Social Reader,” says Nitesh Patel, Director of Wireless Media Strategies. “Publishers can control what articles are hosted by Facebook while partnership with comScore ensures that Instant Article traffic is measured as the traffic on publishers’ own sites. These terms ensure that publishers retain control and can pull back if they wish.”

“However, longer term, with publishers relying more and more on social networks like Facebook, there is the danger that publishers are relegated to suppliers to a one-stop-shop, not too dissimilar to the video channels on YouTube,” says Wei Shi, Analyst of Wireless Media Strategies. “This will happen if Instant Articles becomes a must-have feature for the news reading population on Facebook and if the traffic generated through Facebook’s hosted service becomes an indispensable ad revenue channel.”

— GC7000-XS VX brings high-performance, programmable real-time vision processing to mobile and embedded platforms

SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Vivante® Corporation announces that its GC7000-XS VX is the first vision IP solution to achieve compliance with the OpenVXTM 1.0 specification — a major achievement that comes only seven months after the introduction of OpenVX and emphasizes the cutting-edge technology available in the GC7000-XS product line with the addition of vision acceleration to a core that already has photorealistic 3D rendering capabilities.

Logo –

“Vivante is working with leading industry partners to deliver high-performance, real-time, intelligent vision image processing solutions in mobile, automotive and smart security products through our OpenVX and OpenCL® based Vivante GPUs,” said Wei-Jin Dai, CEO and President of Vivante. “This innovative design enables SoC vendors to use the same processing core for embedded vision acceleration and photorealistic 3D rendering, while limiting power consumption to mobile levels.”

Vivante’s OpenVX compliant GC7000-XS VX allows high-level deeply-embedded devices to optimize their real time performance for minimal power consumption by allowing continuous sensory vision processes to function without fully powering on the GPU.

OpenVX can be used directly by applications or to accelerate higher-level middleware, including the popular OpenCV vision library, which is often used for application prototyping. It is also an ideal foundation for use in production systems, with extensive conformance tests to complement a focused and tightly defined specification for consistent and reliable operation across multiple vendors and platforms. Like other Khronos™ specifications, OpenVX is extensible to meet individual customer needs before an extension is integrated into the core specification.

“I am excited to see Vivante release the first of what we believe will be many IP solutions leveraging the power of OpenVX,” said Victor Erukhimov, CEO of Itseez and Chairman of the Khronos OpenVX working group. “Performance and area-optimized OpenVX GPUs such like Vivante’s will enable the next generation of computer vision processing in embedded and real-time applications, including face, body and gesture tracking, smart video surveillance, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), object and scene reconstruction, augmented reality, visual inspection, robotics and more.”

FIBA and Wilson Sporting Goods Co. Enter Global Partnership for FIBA 3×3

leave a comment »

MIES, Switzerland /PRNewswire/ — Wilson Sporting Goods Co., and FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, announced today they have entered into a four-year agreement for FIBA 3×3. As part of

Photo –

Wilson will supply FIBA with a new basketball designed and engineered by its Wilson Labs innovation team that responds to the speed of the game and enhances shooting, ball handling and grip for players.

“3×3 is a truly exciting game that is open and accessible to anyone who enjoys basketball. We are excited to extend our expertise and experience in basketball into a discipline being played by millions around the world,” said Alan Davenport, Global Commerical Director of Wilson Basketball.  “We look forward to combining our technology and FIBA’s leadership to make the game even more dynamic to play and watch.”

“Wilson is an ideal partner for us as we look to support the tremendous growth of 3×3 basketball on the international stage and into Olympic contention,” said FIBA 3×3 Director Alex Sanchez. “Continually improving the game experience for our players, who live and play all around the world, is important. We want to give them the most advanced technology available so their game can reach new heights. Wilson has an innovative approach that will open a new era in how 3×3 basketball is experienced.”

The Wilson Labs innovation team and FIBA 3×3 collaborated to construct a new and state-of-the-art game ball that would enhance player performance on the court. The new Official FIBA 3×3 Game Ball is now the same size as an intermediate basketball, also known as a size 6 basketball. However, it weighs as much as an official game basketball, known as a size 7.

The smaller circumference of the game ball offers improved ball handling for players of any size and at any skill level. The smaller ball is also better suited to the quick pace and fast scoring action of a 3×3 game. The heavier weight of the ball maintains the level of effort a player needs to shoot (as a player would need with a traditional basketball) and is expected to be less affected by the wind, which is a common factor on outdoor courts.

The new Wilson Official FIBA 3×3 Game Ball also features the Company’s patented Wave Triple Threat Technology for superior control. This patented technology places 24 additional channels, or grooves, on the ball which allows for better grip and ball handing on all types of courts and court conditions. Additionally, the ball showcases a vibrant FIBA 3×3 graphic design in bold blue and yellow to reflect the sun and sky — the outdoor conditions in which 3×3 is traditionally played.

Exciting, urban and innovative, 3×3 is inspired by several forms of streetball played worldwide and is considered the world’s number one urban team sport. Steered by FIBA, games see two teams of three players face off on a basketball half-court.

It was played successfully for the first time in international competition at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games inSingapore and since then has benefitted from the launch of a yearly city-based FIBA 3×3 World Tour ( and national-team world championships.

BANGKOK /PRNewswire/ — Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MCHP), Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions, has announced from Computex Taipei the first USB 3.0 Smart Hub that enable host and device port swapping, I/O bridging, and various other serial communication interfaces. The USB5734 and USB5744 feature an integrated microcontroller, that enables new functionality for USB hubs while lowering overall BOM costs and reducing software complexity.  The USB5734/44 family is USB-IF logo certified (TID 330000058) and features best-in-class signal integrity enabling more robust PCB designs and reducing sensitivities to cable, connector and layout variations.

Microchip USB5734 and USB5744 USB3.0 Smart Hubs
Microchip USB5734 and USB5744 USB3.0 Smart Hubs

To learn more about Microchip’s USB5734 and USB5744, visit And, view a brief presentation, here:

A Smart Hub is a USB hub that integrates system-level functions typically associated with a separate MCU or processor.  Microchip’s new USB 3.0 Smart hubs enable the upstream host controller to communicate to numerous types of external peripherals beyond the USB connection through direct bridging from USB to I2C™, SPI, UART and GPIO interfaces.  This integrated functionality can greatly reduce the complexity of system design by eliminating the need for additional external microcontroller, while providing improved control from the USB host hardware.

Microchip’s patented FlexConnect technology provides the USB5734 Smart Hub the unique ability to dynamically swap between a USB host and a USB device through hardware and/or software system commands giving the new USB host access to downstream resources.  This same FlexConnect technology can also switch common downstream resources between two different USB hosts.  Incorporating FlexConnect into a system simplifies the overall software requirements of the primary host, as class drivers  and application software stay local to the Device-turned-Host.

System developers can easily configure ports and choose application settings with low-cost resistor bootstraps.  If more advanced functionality is required, the USB5734/44 can be configured and programmed with Microchip’s configuration tool, ProTouch2.

The USB5734 and USB5744 USB 3.0 controller hubs serve a wide range of applications in the computing, embedded, medical, industrial and networking markets.  Examples of end applications include HDTV, tablets, notebooks, eReaders, cameras, docking stations, monitors, handheld devices, point-of-sale equipment, ATMs, set-top boxes, break-out boxes, motion sensors, among others.  Available 56-pin, 7 X 7mm package, the USB5744 is the industry’s smallest USB 3.0 Hub for applications where board space is important.

Studies Confirm TRXE-009 Crosses the Blood-brain Barrier

leave a comment »

— Crosses the BBB in a proprietary lipid construct
— Potential to treat both primary and secondary brain cancers

NEW YORK /PRNewswire/ US-Australian drug discovery company, Novogen Limited (ASX: NRT; NASDAQ: NVGN) confirms that a lipid formulation of TRXE-009 dosed intravenously to animals was able to deliver therapeutic concentrations of TRXE-009 to brain tissue. This confirms that the drug is able to cross the blood-brain barrier.

The blood-brain barrier is a defence mechanism intended to protect the brain from the unwanted toxic effects of drugs and food chemicals. It serves to prevent some 98% of all drugs used in humans from reaching the brain. This, plus the inherent resistance of primary brain cancers to chemotherapies, is the reason behind the poor survival prospects of adults and children with brain cancer.

Eleanor Ager PhD, Novogen GBM Program Manager, said, “TRXE-009 shows remarkably potent killing in the test tube against a wide range of cancer types, but it has been its particularly potent activity against brain cancers including glioblastoma and DIPG that has marked it as a potential treatment of primary brain cancers in both adults in children. These are tumors that show high levels of resistance to standard of care drugs, so even if it was possible to get those drugs into the brain, they may not offer clinical benefit.”

“We know TRXE-009 kills these highly resistant cancer cells in vitro, with toxic effects on normal brain cells only occurring at very high doses of the drug. So a vital step forward for us was to see whether we could get the drug to cross the blood-brain barrier. Today’s data shows that it does. The next key step is to confirm that the drug is effective against brain cancer cells growing in the brain.”

Graham Kelly, Novogen Group CEO, said, “TRXE-009 is already on its way into the clinic early next year in the form of Trilexium, a proprietary dosage form of TRXE-009 utilising the compound’s potent general anti-cancer activity. What marks this agent as particularly exciting is its particular ability to kill the full range of cells within a tumor, including the tumor-initiating or cancer stem cells. Cancers such as malignant melanoma and metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer are in our sights.”

“Today’s data is important in showing that the compound now will also be able to proceed into the clinic for testing as a therapeutic for brain cancer, and where others in this field are focusing on the development of treatments just for cancers that arise in the brain, the much larger problem is cancers that arise elsewhere in the body and spread to the brain, so-called secondary brain cancers. About 25% of all malignant cancers that spread within the body, metastasize to the brain. This includes cancers such as cancers of the lung, breast, kidney and bladder, and melanoma, leukaemia, lymphoma and sarcomas. This is a significant problem that is not currently addressed with currently used therapeutics.”

“When you consider the broad anti-cancer activity of TRXE-009, combined its ability to kill cancer stem cells, and now combined with its confirmed ability to get it across the blood-brain barrier, TRXE-009 in our view represents an exciting drug prospect and a breakthrough in the search for an avenue of treatment for the large unmet clinical need of both primary and secondary brain cancer,” Kelly added.

About TRXE-009

TRXE-009 is a super-benzopyran compound that demonstrates cytotoxicity against cancer cells, but particularly activity against cancer cells with stem-cell like activity. TRXE-009 demonstrates potent killing against a range of neural cancers (glioblastoma multiforme and diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma), neuro-endocrine cancer (neuroblastoma) and other forms of cancer (melanoma, prostate cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer). TRXE-009 is highly cytotoxic to glioblastoma stem cells. The putative molecular target is an NADH oxidase involved in regulation of the trans-membrane electron transfer mechanism and up-regulated in cancer cells. Inhibition of this pump mechanism induces a range of pro-death signals leading to caspase-induced apoptosis.

About Trilexium

Trilexium is the name given to a proprietary parenteral formulation of TRXE-009 developed for its ability to maximize systemic drug delivery and effectiveness in pre-clinical rodent models of human non-neural cancers.

About Novogen

Novogen is a public, Australian-US drug development company whose shares trade on both The Australian Securities Exchange (NRT) and NASDAQ (NVGN). The Novogen group includes US-based, CanTx Inc, a joint venture company with Yale University. Novogen has two drug technology platforms yielding drug candidates that are first-in-class with potential application across a broad range of degenerative diseases. In the oncology field, the ultimate objective is to see both drug technologies used in combination as first-line therapy across most forms of cancer, with the objective of preventing tumor recurrence. This objective is based on a strategy of achieving comprehensive destruction of the full hierarchy of cells within a tumor with the super-benzopyran technology platform killing the tumor-initiating cells and the anti-tropomyosin technology, combined with vinca alkaloids, to deliver a potent chemical debulking effect on their daughter cells.
