1 in 10 “completely satisfied” with their looks

leave a comment »

— Over half of people internationally are fairly satisfied or completely satisfied with their personal looks
— Teenagers only slightly more likely to be dissatisfied than older age groups
— Japanese are the most self-critical, with over 1 in 10 “not at all satisfied’

NUREMBERG, Germany, May 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — With summer fast approaching the northern hemisphere and consumers preparing to be ‘beach ready’, GfK has released findings on how satisfied people internationally are with their personal looks.

Across all 22 countries surveyed, over half (55 percent) of consumers aged 15 and over say they are satisfied with their looks, which includes over one in ten (12 percent) who go as far as saying that they are completely satisfied. In contrast, only 16 percent claim any dissatisfaction with how they look, including three percent who state that they are not at all satisfied. The remaining 29 percent are neutral.

Latin American countries are happiest with their looks

Complete satisfaction with personal looks is highest in Latin America, with Mexico, Brazil and Argentina all appearing in the top five for the percentage of population claiming this. When we widen this to include those who say they are fairly satisfied, as well as those who are completely satisfied, Mexico remains on top, standing at nearly three quarters (74 percent), closely followed by Turkey at 71 percent. Brazilians and Ukrainians come next at 65 percent each, then the Spanish at 64 percent, with Germans and Argentinians tying at 62 percent. The Japanese are the most critical of their own looks, with 38 percent not too satisfied or not at all satisfied, followed by the British at 20 percent, then Russians, South Koreans, Swedes and Australians all at 19 percent.

These findings are key for businesses in the fashion, beauty and personal grooming sectors in identifying how messaging can be refined to resonate more strongly with specific markets or target groups. In countries like Japan, UK and Russia, significant numbers will respond to marketing based around ‘improve or change your look’, while consumers in Mexico and Turkey are more likely to respond to offers around ‘refine and maintain your look’.

View infographic showing 22-country ranking:

Teenagers only slightly more critical about their looks

While there is some lean towards teenagers being most self-critical about their looks, it is not as heavy as might be expected – and comes almost wholly from those who are a little bit dissatisfied rather than entirely so. Overall, 16 percent of 15-19 year olds say they are “not too satisfied” with their looks, compared to 12-13 percent for the age groups between 20 and 59 years old. And this difference disappears almost completely when we look at those saying they are not at all satisfied with their looks. Here, all the different age groups stand at either 3 or 4 percent. Overall, people aged 60 and over are least self-critical, with just nine percent being not too satisfied with their looks and three percent not at all satisfied.

Men and women are almost equal

Comparison of the male and female responses also sheds new light on the assumption that women are more critical of their looks than men. Both genders run equal in the percentage that are happy with their looks – each standing at 43 percent saying they are fairly satisfied and 12 percent completely satisfied. However, men are more likely to be neutral about this question than women (31 percent versus 27 percent). When it comes to being dissatisfied with their looks, women creep ahead of the men, but only by a few points – 14 percent being not too satisfied, compared to 11 percent of men, and 4 percent being not at all satisfied, compared to 3 percent of men.

Vanessa-Mae Launches Cruelty Free International as New Global Ambassador

leave a comment »

LONDON/PRNewswire/ — International superstar violinist, Vanessa-Mae, has announced her new role as global ambassador to the world’s leading organisation campaigning to end animal experiments. The launch of Cruelty Free International took place today at a news conference in London and was attended by Vanessa-Mae who spoke passionately about her commitment to ending animal suffering.

Vanessa-Mae stated: “As the new global ambassador for Cruelty Free International, I am dedicated to using my passion to stand up for animals in laboratories. It is heart-breaking that over 100 million animals suffer and die in experiments around the world every year. But we can make the difference. Please join me in calling on the world’s leaders to have the courage to do the right thing for animals. Together, we can make the world cruelty free.”

Michelle Thew, Chief Executive stated: “Cruelty Free International is delighted to welcome Vanessa-Mae as our global ambassador. We estimate that on average at least 115 million animals are used and killed in experiments worldwide every year so the need for a global organisation working solely on this issue has never been greater.”

Cruelty Free International is widely respected as an authority on animal testing and combines award-winning campaigning, political lobbying, pioneering investigations, scientific and legal expertise and corporate responsibility to be the voice for animals in laboratories across the globe. The organisation’s remit includes exposing the reality of life for animals in laboratories, challenging decision-makers to make a positive difference for animals, and championing better science and cruelty free living.

June 1st marks the coming together of BUAV and Cruelty Free International under one name to increase our reach to be the voice for animals in laboratories worldwide. The BUAV is one of the world’s oldest animal protection organisations. With a history rooted in the early social justice movement, the organisation was established in the UK in 1898 by women’s rights campaigner and philanthropist, Frances Power Cobbe.

During its 117 year history, the organisation has successfully campaigned to:

  • Ban animal testing for new cosmetics and those sold in the UK and the EU.  Since 2013, its global campaign to end cosmetics tests on animals is rapidly gaining momentum.
  • Launch the Leaping Bunny programme – the internationally recognised no animal testing certification for cosmetics, personal care and cleaning products – which certifies leading household names including Marks & Spencer, The Co-operative, Waitrose, Superdrug and over 600 other companies.
  • Ban the cruel LD50 oral toxicity tests in the UK, in which animals could be force fed chemicals until 50% of them died.
  • Ban the use of wild-caught monkeys in UK laboratories. The organisation has been instrumental in exposing the international trade in primates for research.
  • Save thousands of animals from testing under REACH, Europe’s chemical testing regime.
  • Inspire generations of politicians, decision-makers and compassionate people to make a difference for animals in experiments.

Vacheron Constantin Unveils the New “Harmony” Collection Watchmaking Sculpture

leave a comment »

GENEVA/PRNewswire/ —

Vacheron Constantin is celebrating 260 years of uninterrupted history and is proud to present the first seven models of a new collection called Harmony. Issued in limited editions, these highly contemporary timepieces feature a new cushion shape and a design inspired by one of its heritage wrist chronograph.

Once again demonstrating the dual nature of its horological expertise – in both visual design and technical innovation – Vacheron Constantin has devised a new construction of the cushion shape that has been part of its range for almost a century. A curved case middle, a square bezel and a round watch glass meet and mingle in an elegant reinterpretation of the monopusher chronograph with pulsometric scale presented by the manufacturer in 1928. While the inspiration derived from the original model is immediately perceptible, each detail has been completely rethought, right the way through to the specific ways in which light reflects off the case. The result is a unique and unprecedented shape which offers optimal comfort. In the same way, each element of the dial and hands on the original watch face has been reinvented to guarantee perfect readability.

The Harmony collection is completely in keeping with its watchmaking heritage while benefiting from cutting-edge technologies. Stemming from seven years of research and development, the three new monopusher chronographs presented in the Harmony collection are driven by calibers entirely developed and produced by Vacheron Constantin. A first version equipped with a split-second function sets slimness records with its ultra-thin self-winding movement measuring just 5.20 mm thick, while a second model stages a fascinating tourbillon and the third variation is equipped – like the original – with a pulsometric scale. Featuring elegant horological complications that are some of the most highly sought after and most complex to produce, the monopusher chronograph models are complemented by a ladies’ double-pusher chronograph. A trio of dual-time watches housing a new in-house movement rounds off this unique range of timepieces. Like the other recent creations from Vacheron Constantin, these seven special editions all bear the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva.

leave a comment »

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif./PRNewswire/ — K-Swiss Global Brands (KSGB), also known as K-Swiss Inc., a division of E.Land Group, is pleased to announce its acquisition of ONE-Distribution, a leading skate-inspired apparel and footwear manufacturer and parent company of KR3W Denim Co. (KR3W) and SUPRA Footwear (SUPRA). KSGB acquired the Fountain Valley, CA-based firm from a group of shareholders including Bertram Capital, a San Mateo, CA-based private equity firm, and a small group of private investors including ONE-Distribution Founders Scott VanDerripe, Angel Cabada and Scott Bailey. The price was not disclosed.

Concurrently, KSGB has announced the appointment of Robert ‘Cape’ Capener as the Brand President of both Supra and KR3W, reporting to Larry Remington, President and CEO of KSGB.  Cape has enjoyed a storied career within the athletic apparel, footwear and action sports industries, both launching new products and building brands. Cape founded the Above the Rim and Heaton brands, and has held senior positions at Adidas, Reebok and No Fear.

“Having formed KSGB just two years ago, we are on an aggressive track to become one of the world’s leading multi-brand companies,” said KSGB President and CEO, Larry Remington. “SUPRA and KR3W are brands that meet the distinctions we are looking for in our portfolio: authenticity, strong brand awareness, a track record of product innovation and opportunities for long-term, global growth. We are excited to join forces with the ONE-Distribution team and to lay a foundation for the future.”

This acquisition brings the KSGB portfolio to a total of six globally distributed brands, including K-Swiss,Palladium, PLDM, OTZ Shoes, KR3W and SUPRA Footwear. KSGB is a division of E-Land Group, a $10 billiongroup of companies with over 200 brands, 10,000 retail stores and business across apparel, footwear, retail, hotels, leisure and entertainment. The KSGB and ONE-Distribution leadership teams will work quickly over the following weeks to develop integrated plans for the company and its newest entities.

Founded in 2006, SUPRA quickly became one of the largest and most successful independent sneaker brands through innovation and style.  Inspired by passion, SUPRA fuses fashion, music, skateboarding, art and street to bring classic silhouettes to those who demand unique designs.  Famous for its game-changing Skytop shoe, SUPRA has evolved as a globally relevant lifestyle brand. Today, SUPRA operates flagship stores in Santa Monica, New York City, Paris, Mexico City and Tokyo and distributes to over 60 countries through a network of select skate shops and high-end boutiques.

KR3W, an apparel brand born from skate culture, began in 2003. The brand is influenced by the diverse Southern California culture and inspired by the pursuit of never settling. The brand made its name in denim, and changed the young men’s denim paradigm with the introduction of its K Slim Denim Jean using an innovative stretch fabric and a narrow profile. KR3W has since expanded its apparel range, successfully blurring the lines between skate and fashion, while maintaining its ‘Dark Americana’ aesthetic.

ONE-Distribution currently has offices in Fountain Valley, CA, Barcelona, Spain, Sydney, Australia andDongguan, China.
