BOE Launches Gen 6 Line in Chengdu, Firmly Establishing the City as a Worldwide Base for the Photonics Display Industry

CHENGDU, China/PRNewswire/ the groundbreaking ceremony of  BOE Gen 6 LTPS/AMO-LED production line was held in Chengdu Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone (Chengdu Hi-tech Zone). The whole project is considered a milestone in the Chengdu electronic information industry which will attract an investment of RMB 22 billion (3.54 billion dollars).

BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd., founded in April 1993, is the world’s leading supplier of semiconductor display technologies, products and services. BOE’s display products are widely used in a broad spectrum of applications such as mobile phones, tablets, notebooks, monitors, TVs, vehicle displays and digital information displays.

According to BOE, the new production line is intended to produce high-end mobile phone panels and new displays for mobile devices. It has a design capacity of 45,000 glass substrates per month and involves a total investment of RMB 22 billion. The project will commence in the second quarter of 2015 and is expected to come into operation in the first half of 2017.

BOE and Chengdu Hi-tech Zone have enjoyed a partnership for many years. In 2007, BOE invested RMB 3.1 billion to build the Gen 4.5 TFT-LCD project in Chengdu and in 2011, BOE expanded the Chengdu LTPS TFT-LCD/AMOLED production line to offer over 30 different kinds of product. In 2013, Chengdu BOE Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd. achieved sales revenue of RMB 4.4 billion and export sales of 600 million dollars.

According to NPD DisplaySearch, the demand for LTPS panels will continue to grow with the popularity of high-resolution smart phones and increasing sizes of smart phone screens. In 2013, the demand for LTPS panels was 3.288 million m2 and that for AMOLED panels was 1.376 million m2. It is expected that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of demand for LTPS panels will reach 24.1% and that for AMOLED panels 40.7% in 2020.

Industry insiders comment that the new production line in Chengdu, once completed, will further increase BOE’s competitiveness in high-end displays of small and medium sizes. It means that the company will gain greater overall strengths in high-performance mobile phone panels and displays for mobile devices, a higher proportion of products with higher gross margins, and better capacity to withstand market fluctuations.

“As a leading city in Southwest China, Chengdu owns an integrated industrial chain of the electronic information industry, multiple talents and human resources, a massive market and favorable transportation and logistics infrastructures, which give it its competitive advantage in developing the photonics display industry”, says Liu Xiaodong, COO of BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. With the benefit of the Gen 6 production line, BOE will useChengdu as a base from which to expand into larger global markets, largely enhancing the competitiveness of its high-end display products.

For Chengdu, the vast amount of investment by BOE is the icing on the cake for strengthening the city’s global influence in the electronic information industry. According to Wu Kai, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Chengdu Municipal Committee; Party Secretary of CPC Chengdu Hi-tech Zone, the deeper cooperation with BOE will promote the structural optimization and sustainable development of Chengdu electronic information industry, while increasing its impact in the new-type display industry.

According to Kai, both the provincial and municipal governments have put the project high on the list of priorities. As the host for welcoming the project, Chengdu Hi-tech Zone has organized an interagency task team, responsible for tracking the process and “seamlessly connecting” with BOE. Now, the preliminary work such as recording of the project, setting up a regulatory plan, capital increase registration, entrusting loans and land transfer is progressing well. In addition, the task team and BOE have also made a comprehensive schedule for the construction and operation of the project in the next two to three years, in which some procedures are timed in days.

Besides BOE, both China National Building Materials Group Corporation and TIANMA Microelectronics Company, Ltd. have established manufacturing bases in Chengdu. In mid-August 2014, China Electronics Corporation announced it is to invest RMB 28 billion to build a Gen 8.5 Panel production line project in Chengdu, and to shape it into one of the most advanced and competitive LCD production lines in the future.

USAID and NI Collaborate to Enable Youth in Lower Mekong with Industry-Ready Engineering Skills and Tools

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) recently announced a new partnership with U.S.-based corporation, National Instruments (NI), to provide hands-on training to aspiring young scientists and engineers in the Lower Mekong sub-region and to empower them with technical skills to help grow the region’s workforce.

The United States is committed to developing essential skills in youth and creating an environment for youth – including women – to thrive in school and in the workplace.  This includes training in hard skills, but just as importantly work readiness skills, including team work, entrepreneurship, adaptability, and critical thinking,” said U.S. Ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Nina Hachigian during the launch of the partnership at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia last Friday. She added that the partnership gives future leaders the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to become innovative leaders and entrepreneurs.

Over the next five years, USAID and NI will work together to create learning centers at universities and vocational colleges to enable students and professionals to access NI’s embedded and measurement devices, including software, hardware, training and technical support. They can also acquire practical science and technology skills and use them to build solutions and, potentially, new companies. This partnership involves developing curricula, training instructors and supplying lab equipment to these schools, start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Contributing $4.5 million in-kind to the partnership, NI commits to provide access to its software and hardware technology platforms, product training materials, virtual and in-country support for multiple regional projects, including the USAID Connecting the Mekong Through Education and Training (USAID COMET) project and the USAID ASEAN Connectivity Through Trade and Investment (USAID ACTI) project.

NI and USAID previously collaborated through the USAID’s Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) science program to support scientists in developing countries. Since announcing the partnership in 2013, both organizations have worked together to bring scientific equipment, training and support to several research projects, which have also translated into knowledge transfer, patents and establishing new start-ups.

“We are excited to announce this new alliance with USAID and contribute our technical expertise and products to accelerate the productivity and innovation in the Lower Mekong sub region.  Access to technical skills and flexible tools combined with the ideas of the young population in this region will enable them to leverage this talent and generate the local solutions needed to ensure the sustainable development of their countries. Two U.S. government projects — USAID COMET and USAID ACTI — will coordinate this partnership. Launched as one of the programs affiliated with the Young Southeast Asia Leadership Initiative (YSEALI) by President Obama in Burma in November 2014, USAID COMET plans to help 100 universities and vocational centers increase the number of skilled workers in ASEAN-targeted fields.

Under USAID ACTI, this partnership will focus on providing information and skills development training to SMEs. Emphasis will be on greater economic inclusion of women and young entrepreneurs to advance regional economic growth in the Mekong sub-region

The ASEAN Economic Community promotes a strong mobile and vibrant work force to help businesses become innovative and grow across the region. This is particularly important for the Lower Mekong countries as there is a high demand for scientists and engineers in the food processing, automotive manufacturing, electronics, construction and even tourism industries. Empowering young women in the workforce is also essential in the Lower Mekong sub-region. Currently, over 40 percent of employers report that the sex of an applicant affects their hiring decisions for skilled labor positions. As a result across this region, women participate in the labor force at rates much lower than men, despite high rates of women working in assembly and low-skilled manufacturing plants.

First Programmatic Marketing Conference Held in Hong Kong

HONG KONG/PRNewswire/ — iClick Interactive Asia (“iClick”), a leading integrated advertising technology company based in Hong Kong, organised the first industry conference on programmatic marketing in the territory on 8 May, 2015. The conference examined and discussed industry best practices in programmatic marketing and digital advertising trends.

More than 500 publishers, advertisers, marketers and agency executives attended the event. Headline speakers at the conference included senior executives from major publishers like Baidu, Tencent and Google.

The conference also unveiled the findings of an independent research study commissioned by iClick. The survey, conducted by a third party research company, Ipsos, shows that advertisers in Hong Kong plan to spend 20% more on digital advertising than they did last year.  A cross-channel approach is becoming common in digital advertising and encouraging the growth of the spending. Across all types of digital media, social media and search engine are the two most preferred channels for marketing campaigns.

Despite the growing popularity of cross-channel digital advertising, only 23% of advertisers have used an integrated platform to manage their cross-channel campaigns. The survey also shows that almost 60% of advertisers have an unhappy experience in cross-channel management. Tracking campaign effectiveness and integrating campaigns on various channels are the top two challenges that advertisers are faced with.

Speaking at the conference, founder and CEO of iClick, Sammy Hsieh, remarked that “Digital channels have become the primary information source for advertisers’ target audience. It is notable that the trend of advertising is moving away from traditional forms and the effectiveness of reaching consumers through digital channels has been increasing.”

Sales promotion and branding are the key marketing objectives in the digital advertising campaigns being conducted according to the survey.

The survey also shows that 86% of advertisers desired to have a single platform to manage their cross-channel digital marketing campaigns and most of them expect to obtain better data analysis and effectiveness measurement.

EMA Releases Draft Opinion on Two Patient-Reported Outcome (PRO) Measures for Evaluating New Treatments for COPD

BETHESDA, Maryland, May 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Evidera, a leading provider of evidence-based solutions for the healthcare industry, is pleased to announce the release of the European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) draft qualification opinion on the EXACT (Exacerbations of Chronic Pulmonary Tool) and E-RS (EXACT-Respiratory Symptoms), two patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures for evaluating treatment outcomes in COPD trials. The daily symptom diary that forms the basis for these instruments was developed as part of the EXACT-PRO Initiative, a multi-year, multi-sponsor project initiated and led by Evidera.

The EMA’s opinion, posted for public comment 13 April 2015, states that the evidence supports the use of the EXACT and E-RS as exploratory endpoints in COPD drug development trials. Referencing the EXACT, the opinion states “the suggested attempt to characterise COPD exacerbation events in terms of severity, duration and frequency in a highly-standardised and more symptom-driven manner can be considered a valuable contribution to the search for suitable efficacy endpoints in COPD trials.” EMA is accepting comments until 25 May 2015.

In 2014, the FDA released their draft qualification document for the EXACT, a first for PRO measures in the U.S., describing the EXACT as a “well-defined and reliable measure of symptoms of ABECB-COPD for use in phase 2 studies.” The E-RS is under review by the FDA.

“The release of qualification statements from the EMA and FDA are important milestones in patient-centered outcomes research,” said Nancy Kline Leidy, Ph.D., Principal Investigator of the EXACT-PRO Initiative and Senior Vice President, Evidera. “PRO measures not only represent the patient’s voice, but are instrumental to scientific progress. The EXACT and E-RS are being used in clinical studies to further our understanding of COPD and the efficacy of interventions to alleviate exacerbations and provide symptomatic relief for people with this condition.”

The EXACT-PRO Initiative was the first consortium convened to develop a standardized PRO instrument for use in drug development trials. The diary has been translated into 55 languages and used in over 65 clinical studies, including 24 trials testing new treatments for COPD.

The GripIt Fixing is an advanced new-to-market product, which offers high loading capabilities, ease of installation and consistent reliability to rival the traditional plasterboard fixing.

This is inserted in a hole of the same diameter drilled in the plasterboard, and tapped with a hammer to engage anti-rotation tabs. The locking wings are then turned using a screwdriver, and spread out behind the plasterboard, to keep the GripIt in place and provide high load-carrying capability. The fitting is then screwed into the GripIt. The fixings can be used on rendered or un-rendered cavity walls, double-thickness plasterboard, insulated plasterboard, or dot and dab walls.

RS is stocking the full range of GripIt Fixings, which are available in four sizes from 15mm diameter to 25mm. The fixings are colour coded according to diameter, and weight loading. The fixings auto adjust so are suitable for 9.5mm to 15mm thick plasterboard.
