Frost & Sullivan Commends Mazaro for Offering a Radically New Way of Transmitting Engine Power with its RVT Technology

LONDON /PRNewswire/ — Based on its recent analysis of the automotive transmission market, Frost & Sullivan recognises Mazaro with the 2015 European Frost & Sullivan Award for Visionary Innovation Leadership. Mazaro’s patented reversible variable transmission (RVT) is a highly innovative technology that offers the benefits of a continuous variable transmission (CVT) without its limitations. Its advanced design delivers superior fuel economy, low CO2 emissions, quick throttle response, continuous operation at maximum power, and no torque dip.

Despite the profusion of transmission technologies, there is a need for a transmission that is much more internally efficient, and always keeps the engine at the right rotations per minute (rpm) for the conditions. Mazaro addresses this need with its RVT, which features wheels that move without a drilling motion and with a slippage as low as 0.2 percent.

“In peer technologies, the rolling surfaces suffer drill-slip, but the RVT’s rolling surfaces simply roll over each other, as in the case of cones with coinciding tips,” said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Arun Chandranath. “When the surface speeds of both cones are equal at one point, the surface speeds are equal at every point on the contact line, resulting in a pure rolling motion. This system eliminates energy-consuming drill-slip and oil heating.”

Furthermore, the RVT facilitates a change in driving direction from forward to reverse and back, in one fluent continuum, without clutches or synchromeshes. The RVT’s speed ratio is 60 percent higher than an 8-speed automatic transmission’s (AT’s) or other CVTs’, which translates to the most efficient use of engines. Indeed, the combination of an RVT and flywheel can recover all kinetic energy due to its capability to change the speed ratio from 0 to high overdrive without losing energy in a slipping clutch.

Meanwhile, Mega Trends such as urbanisation, the rise of metropolitans and megacities, and innovating to zero are creating new opportunities as well as challenges in the global market. Mazaro has fully leveraged the urbanisation trend with its RVT, which has emerged as a practical answer to a wide variety of power transmission needs.

The RVT’s design and its electronic controller allow the engine to operate continuously at its highest overall efficiency, once the driver issues an acceleration, deceleration, or cruising command via the throttle pedal. Effectually, it reduces fuel consumption and emissions by up to 26 percent, operates with minimal noise, and uses fewer parts than  than any other transmission system.

“The RVT boasts exciting dynamics, with a claimed throttle response of 60 ms,” noted Chandranath. “The RVT’s immediate response to the throttle’s commands can give the driver an engaging driving experience.”

All current transmissions, besides CVT, only provide a limited number of distinct gear ratios to select from. To improve fuel economy, manufacturers tend to include more gears; however, this principle has practical and financial ramifications. Yet, in spite of the additional gears, all current transmissions have low efficiency while changing their ratio. In contrast, the RVT has continuously high efficiency, even while changing ratios.

Mazaro is now focusing on making the RVT production-ready for specific applications, through meticulous design and calculation of mechanical aspects, physical models, and controls software.

SK Telecom Unveils Be-Me Platform and Eggo-Mate at MWC 2015

BARCELONA, Spain /PRNewswire/ — At the Mobile World Congress 2015 being held inBarcelona, Spain, SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) has introduced for the first time its ‘Be-Me Platform,’ an intelligent platform that provides smart personalized services by analyzing the user’s situation, and ‘Eggo-Mate’ (tentatively named) a personal digital assistant service developed upon this platform.

  • Be-Me Platform

Be-Me Platform is an intelligence platform that provides users with personalized service in a timely manner by collecting and analyzing users’ diverse situation information. Built with an intelligence algorithm developed by SK Telecom, the platform determines daily patterns of a smartphone user by collecting and analyzing 1) data gathered via smartphone sensors (e.g. ambient light sensor, motion sensor, barometric sensor, etc.), 2) location information acquired via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or base stations, and 3) data on user’s smartphone app usage. For instance, if the user’s smartphone is left unmoved for a long time, the platform learns that he is ‘asleep’, and the place such activity takes place routinely and repetitively is determined to be ‘home.’ In a similar way, the platform recognizes the user’s workplace, commuting route and means of transportation.

Be-Me Platform can thus lead to the creation of diverse services that offer truly personalized values to customers. For example, when a person leaves home to work, the estimated time of arrival of bus he takes every morning is automatically sent to his smartphone. Then, it recommends nearby restaurants according to his usual lunch break time, frequently visited places and other preferences. Also, on his way home after working long hours, it suggests a list of soft and sentimental music to help him relax. The platform becomes more accurate with time through repetitive data analysis and interpretation, and corrects errors intermittently by checking with the users.

Moreover, SK Telecom plans to open up the Application Programming Interface (API) of the platform to third party developers in June 2015 to encourage the creation of diverse intelligence services.

SK Telecom expects great synergies to be created once the Be-Me Platform is converged with technologies and information related to Internet of Things (IoT). Combined with IoT, the platform will serve as the basis for a much wider range of services including smart home and commerce.

  • Eggo-Mate

Along with Be-Me Platform, SK Telecom is also showcasing Eggo-Mate(tentatively named), an intelligent assistant service built on the platform. The company demonstrates three main features of Eggo-Mate, including 1) schedule management, 2) life log, and 3) remote smartphone management.

Eggo-Mate can schedule a meeting on behalf of the user. Upon approval from users, one user’s Eggo-Mate will communicate with Eggo-Mates of other users to exchange users’ schedule and preference to come up with a list of available meeting date/time and venues. It also helps users preserve special moments of their lives by automatically detecting out-of-routine activities and keeping a record (i.e. photo, location, SNS, etc.) of them. Moreover, it allows users to remotely manage their smartphones via PC, identifying the phone’s location and checking missed voice calls and messages. SK Telecom plans to commercialize Eggo-Mate in September 2015after upgrading a number of features.

UNICEF Ambassador Mahmoud Kabil Joins Public Board of Factor GMO Project – World’s Largest Study on GMO and Pesticide Safety

The ‘Factor GMO’ Public Board will include members with different points of views regarding GMO safety, however all members will agree on the need for precautionary science.

The Public Board will also support the public, corporate and government funding process for ‘Factor GMO’ and future precautionary science projects. However, the Public Board will have absolutely no involvement in the scientific study.

The ‘Factor GMO’ study will investigate the health effects of a genetically modified (GMO) crop (a variety of GM Maize) that has been in our food and animal feed supplies for many years. It will answer the question: Is this GMO food and associated pesticide safe for human health?

Farmers, retailers, governments, scientists and consumers have been involved in a heated international debate since GM foods were introduced in 1994. However, there has never been a scientific study that is comprehensive enough to give them a clear answer regarding the safety for human health of any one GM food – until now.

‘Factor GMO’ will be the largest and most detailed long-term experiment ever conducted on a GM food and its associated pesticide. It will add invaluable data of unprecedented power to enable regulators, governments and the general public of every country to answer the question: Is the GM food and associated pesticide really safe at real world levels of consumption/exposure?

The study will also establish a new, higher standard for the rigorous testing of the safety of GM foods and their associated pesticides that will be applicable world-wide.

Paul G. Allen Locates Sunken Japanese WWII Battleship Musashi

PHILIPPINES /PRNewswire/ — Philanthropist and entrepreneur, Paul G. Allen, has located the Musashi, one of the two largest and most technologically advanced battleships in naval history. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II, and the finding of the battleship is a significant milestone in the annals of naval history.


Mr. Allen and his team of researchers began their search for the Musashi more than eight years ago. Using historical records from four countries, detailed undersea topographical data and advanced technology aboard his yacht, M/Y Octopus, Mr. Allen and his team located the battleship in the Sibuyan Sea on March 1, 2015.

Despite numerous eyewitness accounts, the exact location of the ship was unknown. The team combined historical data with advanced technology to narrow the search area. Mr. Allen commissioned a hypsometric bathymetric survey of the ocean floor to determine the terrain. This data was used to eliminate large areas for the search team and also resulted in the discovery of five new geographic features on the floor of the Sibuyan Sea. InFebruary 2015, the team set out to conduct the final phase of the search using a BlueFin-12 Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). Because the search area had been so narrowly defined by the survey, the AUV was able to detect the wreckage of Musashi on only its third dive. A Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) with a high-definition camera confirmed the identity of the wreckage as Musashi.

“Since my youth, I have been fascinated with World War II history, inspired by my father’s service in the U.S. Army,” said Mr. Allen. “The Musashi is truly an engineering marvel and, as an engineer at heart, I have a deep appreciation for the technology and effort that went into its construction. I am honored to play a part in finding this key vessel in naval history and honoring the memory of the incredible bravery of the men who served aboard her.”

Commissioned in 1942, the Musashi was the largest battleship in naval history, weighing in at 73,000 tons fully loaded. It featured eighteeninch armor plating and was armed with nine eighteen-inch guns, the largest ever mounted on a warship. Utmost secrecy was maintained by the shipyard in Nagasaki during the construction; the entire length of the ship was hidden from view to prevent the Allied Forces from learning of its construction. Active in several battles, including the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the Musashi was eventually sunk by an estimated 19 torpedoes and 17 bombs on October 24, 1944 in the lead up to the Battle of Leyte Gulf.  Of Musashi’s 2,399 crew members, nearly half lost their lives including the Commander Vice Admiral Toshihira Inoguchi. Even today, the Musashi and her sister ship, the Yamato, are considered to be unparalleled feats of naval design and construction.

Mr. Allen and his research team are mindful of the responsibility related to the wreckage of the Musashi as a war grave and intend to work with the Japanese government to ensure the site is treated respectfully and in accordance with Japanese traditions.

M/Y Octopus is regularly used for exploration projects, scientific research initiatives and rescue missions. In 2012, Mr. Allen and the Octopus underwater teams participated in the exploration of the wreck of the HMS Hood, in conjunction with the British Navy.
