Perfect World signs MOU with Columbia University

leave a comment »

BEIJING /PRNewswire/ — On the afternoon of September 30, Perfect World, a leading developer and operator of interactive entertainment products in China, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York. This was the result of in-depth discussions between Perfect World and Columbia University on the applications of interactive digital entertainment in medical rehabilitation and the role it plays in social development.

On the morning of the same day, a delegation led by Perfect World CEO Xiao Hong visited Columbia University’sDepartment of Computer Science as well as the neuroscience and environmental health science laboratories at the university’s Mailman School of Public Health, where they gained further insight into Columbia University’sachievements in public health. Then, in the afternoon, Perfect World executives held in-depth discussions on how interactive digital entertainment can be used in healthcare with a group consisting of more than ten scientists from the Mailman School of Public Health. Eric Kandel, a winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine, shared his research findings and was actively engaged in the discussions.

According to Xiao Hong, from wearable devices, amusement and fitness equipment to transportation and medical rehabilitation facilities, extending on to educational products, public consumption channels and man-machine interaction platforms, anything and everything can become a vehicle for digital interactive entertainment and inspire new thinking across a variety of sectors.

At this year’s ChinaJoy, Xiao Hong noted that in the future the game industry will enter into and converge with the healthcare, consumer goods, education, communications, IT and finance sectors, in a move to enhance day-to-day life for an ever larger segment of the population, as games come to symbolize and represent a healthy approach to life.

The cooperation between Perfect World and Columbia University underscores this trend. The combination of games and medical rehabilitation can give full play to game technologies. Games allow patients to interact with objects through a variety of sensory stimuli naturally in a virtual environment, while rehabilitation software built with virtual reality technology exhibits more patience than a human trainer and delivers a more uniform quality of treatment, significantly reducing risks associated with human error. At the same time, this form of rehabilitation therapy will not only take the boredom out of the entire process but even put the patient into a better mood, going a long way in improving rehabilitation effects.

The combination of Perfect World’s international cutting-edge game research and development with Columbia University’s profound knowledge of neural medicine will drive the development of a new approach to medical rehabilitation that integrates the discipline with the concept and technologies of games. This creative and meaningful cooperation across disciplines opens up broader development prospects for the game industry and even the entire interactive entertainment sector.

In the future, the rapid development of scientific technologies will open up more possibilities for the game industry. It is anticipated that games will gradually become an integral part of daily life. Areas such as medical rehabilitation, wearable devices, amusement and fitness equipment, transportation facilities, medical rehabilitation facilities, educational products and facilities, public consumption channels as well as the man-machine interactive experience will become the new directions for the industry. Games will not only be for entertainment and relaxation, they and the technology that drives them will become part and parcel of every aspect of a global user’s life.

PanelPilotACE Available from RS Components Slashes Development Time and Cost for Advanced Displays

-Complete hardware and software solution enables creation of customised industrial or commercial displays via ‘drag-and-drop’ design tools

SINGAPORE, Oct. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — RS Components (RS), the trading brand ofElectrocomponents plc (LSE: ECM), the global distributor for engineers, has announced global stock of PanelPilotACE, a new hardware and software display platform created by Lascar Electronics that enables the rapid development of fully customised industrial and commercial user interfaces and panel meters. PanelPilotACE’s combination of a multifunctional touch-screen colour display with simple drag-and-drop design software removes the need for any coding, cutting development time by months for even the most advanced displays.

PanelPilotACE
PanelPilotACE

The PanelPilotACE Design Studio software provides a number of building blocks to allow users to easily add elements to their project. From background images to text elements, analogue and digital style meters, touch-screen navigation elements and even complex logic statements, users can rapidly build up sophisticated multi-screen interfaces without needing to write a single line of code.

When complete, designs are uploaded to the first PanelPilotACE compatible display hardware, the SGD 43-A, via USB. This display features multiple standard inputs and interfaces, providing the flexibility for users to implement touch-screen navigation, measurement and display of analogue, digital and bus inputs, as well as control of outputs and alarms.

The free to download PanelPilotACE Design Studio software comes with a library of pre-defined elements, but users can also create or import their own elements to allow plenty of scope for creativity — enabling the display to be tailored for almost any industrial or commercial application.

The SGD 43-A is designed to be panel mounted, making it easy to integrate into a range of industrial and manufacturing applications and processes, but can just as easily be adapted for other commercial uses — as a touch-screen control panel in medical devices, for monitoring in scientific research, or even as an information display in museums or other public buildings.

The low-profile display features a 4.3″ capacitive touch-screen with an ARM 9 processor running embedded Linux. The display is powered either from USB or a 5V to 30V DC supply and offers users a wealth of hardware interfaces including four 16-bit bi-polar analogue inputs, eight digital input/output pins, two alarm outputs (max current sink 10mA) and four PWM outputs.

Users can test software on emulated hardware before uploading the designs quickly and easily via USB.

PanelPilotACE is available to purchase direct from stock at RS Components globally.

DHL Launches Freight Capacity Management Program in the Light of Rapidly Increasing Trade Volumes

leave a comment »

— Carrier rates climb as global exports and freight volumes rise
— DHL Global Forwarding secures freight capacities to ensure reliable service for customers
— Increase in demand leads the way for Asia Pacific trade recovery

SINGAPORE, Oct. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — DHL Global Forwarding, the air and ocean freight specialist within Deutsche Post DHL, is responding to global trade growth with freight capacity initiatives designed to support customers in a challenging market environment. These include securing sufficient long term capacity on some of the world’s busiest trade lanes such as, to and from Asia Pacific, where carrier rates are climbing as a result of shortfalls in freight capacity.

Roger Crook, CEO DHL Global Forwarding, Freight said, “As global trade picks up — fueled by spiking demands in technology — DHL is seeing customer volumes increase on many trade lanes, especially in Asia Pacific. In this scenario, where capacity is tightening and demand is rising, upward pressure on prices is virtually unavoidable. DHL’s capacity program is targeted to meet customers’ crucial shipping needs across all industry sectors against the backdrop of rising demand.”

Recent data shows that global exports are on the increase. According to IHS, exports are up 4.4 percent in the third quarter of 2014 compared to 2013[1]. Asia Pacific is showing the most marked trade improvement compared to other regions. Trade activity among Asia’s emerging markets rebounded from low growth in the first quarter of 2014 and has been on an upward trend ever since.

In Asia Pacific, air freight carriers are registering a 7.1 percent rise in Freight-Tonne-Kilometer (FTK) in July 2014compared to 2013. In mainland China, market demand is picking up, yet the capacity supply remains tight. HSBC’s Manufacturing PMI[2] shows that this sector in mainland China, India, Korea and Taiwan expanded in August, withTaiwan signaling the strongest improvement since April 2011.

“Market indicators and recent developments in global trade give cause for optimism, especially in the Asia Pacificregion. By taking the initiative in terms of capacity protection for large volumes and continually seeking solutions to the market challenges faced by our customers, DHL is well-positioned to face peaks in business head-on as well as maintaining the highest level of global service for our customers,” commented Kelvin Leung, CEO Asia Pacific, DHL Global Forwarding.

Asia Pacific Mining Limited Announces Successful Approval of the Historic AP-4 Exploration License, Myanmar

-First Western-led mining development company to be granted an exploration license in the high-potential mineral province of Myanmar

HONG KONG, Oct. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Asia Pacific Mining Limited (“APML” or “the Company”) is pleased to announce the full approval of its AP-4 mineral exploration license in Shan State, Myanmar.

Approval of APML’s AP-4 license application was granted today by the Myanmar Ministry of Mines, represented by the Department of Geological Survey & Mineral Exploration, constituting the final step in approval and finalization. This historic approval represents the first grant of a 100%-owned exploration license to a Western-led mining development company in Myanmar.

“The finalization of the AP-4 license marks the culmination of years of cooperation between Asia Pacific Mining Limited, Myanmar’s Ministry of Mines and the Department of Geological Survey & Mineral Exploration,” saidAndrew Mooney, Chief Executive Officer of APML. “The fact that this emerging mining superpower has selected us as their first recipient of a modern exploration license granted to a Western-led firm speaks highly of the quality of professionals and work to date on both sides.”

The AP-4 license covers 649 square kilometers northwest of the town of Namtu, Shan State — itself located approximately 40 kilometers northwest of the major regional center and airport at the city of Lashio.

The AP-4 license was advanced by APML to cover lands surrounding the historic Bawdwin zinc-lead-silver mine — one of the largest producers of these metals in the world during its period of peak output when built and operated by British interests at the turn of the 20th century. Since 1951, production from Bawdwin totaled over 8.1 million tonnes of ore grading an average of 4.5% zinc, 8.8% lead and 0.18% copper. This includes 5.5 million tonnes of ore produced from underground workings, which carried an average silver grade of 7.9 troy oz/t (246 g/t). This data does not capture reported production of associated nickel, antimony and gold.

APML believes that historic exploration in the Bawdwin area has been minimal — thus raising strong prospects for additional discoveries here of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits similar to the Bawdwin lodes. The AP-4 license area covers ground stretching from the Bawdwin mine to historic underground workings in the northerly Mohochaung area, where past production of zinc, lead and silver has been widely reported.

The Company now plans to begin fieldwork at AP-4 on October 9. A number of target zones for Bawdwin-style mineralization have already been identified across the project based on past geological and geochemical surveys — copies of which are held in APML’s proprietary geological library and database covering Myanmar. APML has supplemented this data with modern analysis of satellite imagery and other sources in order to prioritize first areas of investigation for the AP-4 project.

Initial fieldwork at AP-4 will consist of field mapping, sampling and geochemical surveys aimed at better defining drill targets for subsequent testing. Based on APML’s knowledge of the geology at the Bawdwin mine and across the region, the Company believes the AP-4 project holds potential for discovery of zinc-lead-silver deposits at world-class size and grade.

At the same time as APML is advancing the AP-4 project, the Company is also moving forward with exploration license applications for copper-gold porphyry targets in Sagaing Division, central Myanmar (applications AP-8, AP-9 and AP-10). These applications are also based on proprietary data from APML’s unique countrywide library and database, and are designed to cover targets similar to the Monywa copper mine — which contained an original Measured and Indicated Mineral Resource of over 1 billion tonnes grading 0.40% copper in Sagaing Division. More updates on these projects will be released over the coming months.
