Technology a compelling factor behind Chinese outbound travel surge

leave a comment »

More travel, higher spending, greater independence fuelled by online and mobile, the latest report reveals

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — The latest™ Chinese International Travel Monitor (CITM), published today, reveals just how much technology has become a powerful element in the decision-making mix of this critical sector, following another record year for travel and spending[1].

For the first time, more than half of the Chinese travellers surveyed say they now book their hotel accommodation either via the web or mobile apps, up from 45 per cent in 2013. Just under half use online accommodation websites and online reviews sites to research their trips and a third check social media. Eighty-four per cent share their photos and experiences on social media during and after an international trip. The provision of free Wi-Fi is chosen as the most important service in a hotel by 59 per cent.

Surveying more than 3,000 Chinese international travellers and 3,000 hoteliers around the world, the third annual CITM reveals significant insights into all aspects of the changing behaviour of Chinese travellers and how the global hotel industry is adapting to maximise the benefits of this new market.

With 97 million Chinese travelling abroad in 20131, up 14 million on 2012, more than half of the hoteliers surveyed say that they have seen an increase in the number of Chinese guests in the previous 12 months while 36 per cent believe that the influx of Chinese tourists is one of the factors that will have the most impact on their business in the next 12-24 months.

With internet penetration in the country climbing to 45.8 percent, China ended the year with 618 million internet users, 500 million of these choosing to access the web via a mobile device[2], according to the China Internet Network Information. More than 90 per cent of internet users reportedly have a social media account.

Abhiram Chowdhry, Vice President and Managing Director APAC of the brand, said: “There are many factors driving the desire of the Chinese people to explore the world. The rising affluence of the growing middle class with higher disposable incomes, the upward trend in the numbers of repeat travellers, more relaxed visa conditions and improved local infrastructure are all dovetailing to expedite this growth. However, our report quantifies another factor: the rate at which technology is transforming the landscape of Chinese overseas travel.”

There is also a growing confidence shown by these new travellers, particularly amongst the young. Two-thirds of the Chinese consumers questioned say that they now prefer to travel independently, up five percentage points on 2013, while more than 60 per cent of hoteliers have seen a boost in the number of independent travellers in the last two years. This is the clearest indication yet of the move away from the previous preference for group travel.

Strong Demand for Ambi Climate Beta Units

leave a comment »

HONG KONG /PRNewswire/ — Ambi Climate – the delightful add-on upgrade that simplifies your comfort and optimises your home’s air conditioning (“AC”) – has officially accepted its first beta testers. Ambi Labs CEO Julian Lee announced the upcoming beta during Echelon 2014, Asia’s Largest Tech Conference, which was recently held in Singapore. Response from the audience was extremely enthusiastic, with the beta test units set aside for this occasion snapped up in less than 2 hours.

Ambi Climate simplifies your AC comfort
Ambi Climate simplifies your AC comfort

“We thank the organisers, e27, for the opportunity to present at Echelon 2014. It was the perfect platform for us to recruit beta testers from across Asia,” stated Julian. “We are also heartened by the fact that our message resonated so strongly with the audience!”

Attendees at e27 were active not just in signing up as beta testers, but they also voted overwhelmingly for Ambi Climate in the People’s Choice Award — one of only 3 prizes awarded to the 10 finalists, who were in turn handpicked out of over 400 startups that applied to Echelon 2014. “We are humbled and grateful to the Echelon attendees for their support. This validates our research into a common pain point amongst consumers in Asia,” said Julian after the event.

Echelon 2014 attendees who registered for the beta trial were also encouraged to state how Ambi Climate would help them, with the largest category of responses related to comfort. “I’m sick of adjusting my AC temperature every 30 mins!” read one, and “I hate waking up [at] night to [turn] off my aircon” stated another. Some saw an opportunity to care for their loved ones: “So that my wife can stop switching the AC on and off throughout the night.” Others wanted Ambi Climate to help with their AC’s energy consumption: “[I am a] big believer in reducing energy waste at home, especially during the night when AC might not be always required. Plus it would save loads on energy bills!”

Ambi Climate harnesses machine learning and big data techniques to solve these problems. It is the world’s first system that learns not just your preferences, but also predicts how conditions in your home will change. Ambi Climate’s patent pending algorithms build up a holistic picture of your home, and are able to adjust your AC settings to ensure your comfort, no matter the time of the day, or outdoor weather patterns. Ambi Climate also provides deep, data-driven insights into the conditions in the user’s home, and the impact of their usage behaviour. This knowledge helps users to take control of their AC usage, allowing them to understand the tradeoffs between comfort and energy consumption.

Want to sign up as a beta tester? Ambi Climate beta devices will soon be available to a wider audience via a crowdfunding campaign. Sign up for the mailing list at and be notified as soon as they launch their campaign.

Ambi Labs is also announcing an “Ambi-A-Day” video contest. From 16 July to 22 July, contest entrants who submit a video to the Ambi Climate Facebook page detailing why they want an Ambi Climate in 15 seconds or less will have a chance to win a free device. The video with the most votes each day wins a production Ambi Climate device. For further details and Terms and Conditions, visit the official contest page:

Newly-Published Study Confirms Stretta to be Valuable GERD Treatment

leave a comment »

-Radiofrequency (RF) Therapy Fills Gap Between Medications and Surgery

NORWALK, Conn. /PRNewswire/ — A newly published peer-reviewed paper concludes that Stretta therapy is a safe, effective and durable treatment for gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD). The paper states that Stretta addresses a significant unmet need where patients receive inadequate control from PPI therapy and find surgery an undesirable option. The paper was authored by George Triadafilopoulos, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and was published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology.

Dr. Triadafilopoulos states, “Today, more than ever, clinicians will benefit from the addition of Stretta to the treatment armamentarium for their GERD patients.” The comprehensive review examines the more than 35 studies published on the procedure, including a recent 10-year follow up study, and concludes that Stretta is a highly valuable middle treatment option between PPI’s and surgery.

Other conclusions reached:

  • Stretta treatment does not result in any tissue destruction, nor does it create scar tissue
  • Symptom control is consistent among Stretta patients who were previously PPI dependent or poorly controlled by PPI
  • Functional improvements occur post-Stretta, including improved acid sensitivity and decreased tissue compliance
  • Stretta is “exceedingly safe, durable and reproducible”

GERD is the most frequent outpatient diagnosis in the United States. Although most patients are treated with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), up to 40 percent of patients have incomplete control of reflux symptoms on PPIs.  Stretta is a non-surgical treatment, and involves the delivery of radiofrequency energy to the muscle of the lower esophageal sphincter and gastric cardia. Stretta doesn’t alter the anatomy or implant any foreign material and does not preclude further steps with more invasive procedures if indicated. According to the author, Stretta is the least expensive alternative to medical therapy.

Stretta Therapy is a non-surgical treatment for GERD that is an effective option for patients who do not respond well to medications. Recently, Stretta has been the subject of multiple studies, including eight and 10-year follow-up, and has received the strongest grade recommendation from the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).

Mederi Therapeutics manufactures Stretta and Secca – innovative medical devices that deliver RF energy to treat digestive diseases. Mederi therapies are available worldwide. Mederi is located in Norwalk, CT.

Dmitry Medvedev Presented BIOCAD the First National “Industry” Award

leave a comment »

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia /PRNewswire/ — On July 9 Prime Minister of the Russian FederationDmitry Medvedev, presented Russia’s first national “Industry” award to a biopharmaceutical company BIOCAD. The Company is developing a unique project called MabNext. Within the scope of MabNext project BIOCAD develops a number of innovative drugs based on monoclonal antibodies for treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases. The ceremony took place at the International Exhibition “Innoprom 2014” in Ekaterinburg.

According to the Russian Ministry of Health, in the last 12 years the number of new cases of malignant tumors has increased by 11%. The steady increase in the number of cancer patients is a global trend. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, in the next 20 years the number of new oncology patients in the world will reach the figure of 22 million cases per year.  Therefore, Russia and the rest of the world are so desperately in need of new effective drugs that will help to overcome serious illnesses and save millions of lives.

BIOCAD is developing a wide portfolio of innovative products based on monoclonal antibodies for treatment of diseases such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.

“Now the country is undergoing fundamental changes regarding availability of modern drugs for its people. Thanks to the support of Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Economic Development, Russian pharmaceutical companies are creating a powerful technologic basis for the production of innovative products and are competing successfully on the global pharmaceutical market. Of course, our foreign colleagues are not happy with this. However, now we can deliver innovative medicines that have no analogues in the world. The project MabNext is a bright example of this,” said Dmitriy Morozov, CEO of BIOCAD.

The main advantage of products based on monoclonal antibodies, is that they affect only selected cells or molecules, in other words, these are targeted therapies.  Only relevant targets are neutralized without affecting the healthy cells.

BIOCAD has more than 10 of such innovative products based on monoclonal antibodies at different stages of development. One of the most noticeable ones is an antibody specific for interleukin 17. Clinical trials of this drug will begin in 2014. The drug has no analogues on the market and its characteristics are superior to anti-IL17 antibodies being developed by foreign companies. This product has huge potential when it comes to the treatment of socially significant diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.

If we talk about cancer – the company is at the stage of developing original products based on monoclonal antibodies against targets such as PD-1, HER3, Ang-2 and others. Antibodies for PD-1 increase ability of patient’s immune system to recognize and destroy tumor cells.

Asia Plantation Capital Patchouli Oil Achieves Premium Grade

leave a comment »

SINGAPOREJuly 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Asia Plantation Capital has been developing sustainable, organic, Patchouli oil production on its plantations for the last year. Patchouli oil is extracted from the leaves of the perennial patchouli bush (which regrows) allowing the leaves to be harvested, sustainably, every 3 to 4 months.

The recent harvest and production of Patchouli oil, by Asia Plantation Capital, on its plantations in Sri Lanka has been certified as premium grade by independent analysts at the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), Colombo.

When analysed via mass spectrometry by the ITI, samples of our oil tested positive for the major compounds of Patchouli oil.

Of these compounds, Patchouli alcohol is the main constituent which determines the quality of the oil. Consequently, the price of the Patchouli oil strongly depends on the ratio of Patchouli alcohol present in the oil.

Spectrometry results clearly indicate the high content of patchouli oil (0.53%) and patchouli alcohol (54.56%) in the oil sample which was taken after the distillation process. A patchouli alcohol content of over 30% is considered excellent quality.

These results show that the cultivation of patchouli for commercial oil extraction in Sri Lanka is a viable proposition.

This is a significant breakthrough for Asia Plantation Capital in Sri Lanka. We already cultivate Patchouli inThailand and are now gearing up to follow our success in the production of high quality Oud oil with large scale production of Patchouli; for Sri Lanka, this can be particularly beneficial as it can create a new, high quality crop to boost exports and the rural economy.

Lalith Ganlath, Attorney for Asia Plantation Capital in Colombo, says, “It’s a pleasure to see the hard work of the Sri Lankan, Asia Plantation Capital team paying off in Sri Lanka, on the back of plantation projects which the Company operates in other parts of South East Asia, and helping to contribute research and innovation to the country’s agricultural export markets. I am very keen to help promote this project and encourage out-growers to cultivate the Patchouli, which can become part of their existing agroforestry incomes. It will also help maximise land use and returns for rural farmers, with Asia Plantation Capital agreeing to buy back the dry leaves which can be harvested every 3 months.”

Asia Plantation Capital already has its own distribution offices, retail shops and warehouses in the Middle East,EuropeAsia and the USA, supplying the industry. It is well set to become a major supplier of sustainable Patchouli oil, traceable to the source of production  Patchouli oil is one of the most widely used oils in theinternational Fragrance industry and has a forecast industry value of over $46 billion in 2018 (Source: Industry Analyst’s Inc.). Interestingly, Patchouli oil is one of the few natural essential oils which cannot be reproduced in any high quality, synthetically, for use in perfumes; making the demand for this excellent oil relatively assured.

Over the next year, the Company aims to establish over 5,000 acres of Patchouli fields using a combination of their own lands in South East Asia and out grower schemes in Sri LankaThailand and Malaysia. All production for the plantations will be supplied with Certificate of Origin, Certificate of Analysis (CofA), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for exports and Flow of Processing and Product Specification. In addition, the oil will be packaged under the Group’s perfume brand, “Fragrance Du Bois” and branded, “Patchouli Du Bois” as a further stamp of guaranteed quality — which has been a key to the success in globally marketing the Company’s other essential oils such as Oud (agarwood) and also infected wood chips.

Their focus is on multicultural and diverse plantation projects which are geared to the domestic and commercial demands of the countries in which they operate. Working closely with and supporting local communities is an underlying, core principle of the APC business. Since its founding in 1986, NHR has become a strategic partner to more than 10,000 customers worldwide, spanning Global 1000 enterprises, small and mid-sized businesses, telecommunications service providers, financial institutions, government entities, educational institutions, and healthcare organizations. In the last 28 years, the company has partnered with clients to consistently offer the best IT solutions to meet business needs, this has resulted in the transformation from a basic reseller of pre-owned Cisco equipment-to a leading, independent supplier of vendor-agnostic IT infrastructure and operations services. Curvature is uniquely positioned to help CIOs regain control of how they procure, maintain and upgrade multi-vendor IT infrastructure.

According to Mike Sheldon, President and CEO of Curvature, the new name reinforces a long-standing commitment to offering customers choices and solutions that allow them to excel in meeting ever-increasing business and technology demands. “We firmly believe that our customers need to be in charge of their own IT destiny and not feel forced to depend solely on OEMs to guide crucial lifecycle management decisions. We chose the name Curvature because it represents a change in direction from the norm. The cornerstone of our approach has always been in allowing our customers to dictate their own terms in their IT purchases. However, in doing so, our value and services offering had long surpassed our former name-Network Hardware Resale.”

Debunking the Five-Year Equipment Refresh Myth

Curvature’s approach to services and equipment offerings is an essential proof point in debunking the myth that customers should upgrade their equipment every three-to-five years. With Curvature’s NetSure services, the company gives customers an opportunity to extract more value from their IT infrastructures by extending timelines for equipment upgrades and IT refreshes.

In a recent commissioned Forrester Consulting study, entitled “Challenging the Status Quo on Maintenance Contracts and Refresh Cycles to Lower Costs,”1 research revealed that businesses miss an opportunity for significant cost savings when they buy into accelerated refresh cycles guided by OEMs.

Key findings of this survey include:

  • Up to 79 percent of those polled reported refreshing their wired networking infrastructure every five years, based on industry averages guided by OEMs;
  • 81 percent of the respondents bought maintenance from their OEM, yet cited little value; responses around the biggest challenges with their existing services were motivated by misrepresentation of cost savings, new fees and inflexible pricing schedules; and
  • 80 percent of survey respondents would look to third-party maintenance options.

Delivering Greater Value with Hybrid Support Services

According to Forrester, the total economic impact of acquiring new network hardware, pre-owned network hardware, and maintenance contracts from Curvature can yield hardware, maintenance and warranty cost savings; improve service efficiency; reduce network downtime and provide asset recovery revenue.2 Curvature’s NetSure customers can deploy hybrid network services to augment and/or replace OEM maintenance at up to 50-to-90 percent cost savings.

In “Challenging the Status Quo on Maintenance Contracts and Refresh Cycles” Forrester Consulting indicated, “In today’s economic conditions, businesses highly prioritize expense management, placing continual pressure on departments to maintain or reduce operating budgets….After surveying 304 IT decision makers, Forrester found that even though IT budgets are under constant scrutiny, businesses have defaulted to vendor influence, which has blinded them to the rewards of extending hardware life cycles and third-party maintenance solutions.”

For a leading financial services firm, maintaining aggressive support with stringent Service Level Agreements (SLAs), hot spares, and field support in remote locations are key to ensuring the highest levels of network redundancy. In order to safeguard equipment that is no longer covered under SMARTnet as well as support gear slated for removal or upgrade during its contracted maintenance period, the company added Curvature’sNetSure™ technical services to complement their existing SMARTnet support. The resulting hybrid services model has produced a multitude of benefits, thanks to Curvature’s responsive customer service, investment in quality processes, speed of equipment delivery and cost-effective field support.
