ViaSat Broadband System Terminal Deliveries Reach 2 Million

leave a comment »

— Includes one million second generation residential terminals

CARLSBAD, Calif., March 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — With installations in North America, Europe, and the Middle East ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq: VSAT) has delivered over 2 million of its Ka-band broadband satellite terminals, making it the leading choice for Internet by satellite. The two million terminal total includes over one million second generation broadband terminals, which are part of the Exede satellite services network that features the world’s highest capacity satellite, ViaSat-1.

Logo –

Customers and partners are using the family of satellite broadband terminals for consumer, enterprise, on-the-move, and portable applications because the ViaSat Broadband System changes the economics and performance of satellite communications for a number of markets:

Residential Internet that has enabled satellite to overtake all ISPs in delivering promised speeds, transforming satellite broadband from last-resort to a great Internet alternative.
Live event communications with sufficient capacity to supply thousands of spectators, vendors, sponsors, broadcasters and organizers with HD video streaming and high-speed data simultaneously, at virtually any location.
Faster in-flight Internet that can provide a guaranteed service level to everyone onboard, encouraging much higher take rates and engagement among passengers.
Economics that enable the real-time broadcast of big moments in life such as weddings, local sports, and graduations.
Portability that enables an office-like, enterprise-level broadband connection virtually anywhere with multiple simultaneous Internet connections.

“The applications – residential Internet, newsgathering, in-flight Internet, and enterprise – are familiar, but the service performance, ability to serve millions of users with high-speed services, and operation with the highest capacity Ka-band satellites are what distinguishes ViaSat broadband from other systems that may be labeled high throughput satellite,” said John Zlogar, VP of ViaSat Commercial Networks.

The new delivery milestones continue the success of SurfBeam®, the first satellite networking system designed from the ground up for economical, mass-market broadband networking. The ViaSat Broadband System combines the terminal integration, data speeds, network scale, and management systems needed to deliver a fast web experience that enables satellite service to compete effectively against terrestrial alternatives such as DSL and terrestrial wireless.

Malaysia’s largest shopping mall operator introduces a first-of-its-kind loyalty programme and system

SELANGOR, Malaysia, March 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — In conjunction with its 40th anniversary, Sunway Group, Malaysia’s leading property developer, realty group and the largest shopping mall operator in Malaysia, launched a new point-based loyalty programme powered by Fusionex, an international software provider specialising in Analytics and Big Data.

The launch of the Sunway Loyalty Programme (Sunway Pals) was held at the Blue Concourse of Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall on Friday, February 28th, and was officiated by YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO, Founder & Chairman of Sunway Group.
Evan Cheah, Executive Director – President’s Office & Information Technology witnessing the occasion where YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO, Founder & Chairman of Sunway Group, is presented with an Honorary Loyalty Card by Ivan Teh, Fusionex Managing Director, at the Loyalty Programme Sneak Preview for Merchants
Evan Cheah, Executive Director – President’s Office & Information Technology witnessing the occasion where YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO, Founder & Chairman of Sunway Group, is presented with an Honorary Loyalty Card by Ivan Teh, Fusionex Managing Director, at the Loyalty Programme Sneak Preview for Merchants

The Sunway Group has become one of Malaysia’s biggest success stories, with more than 10 business units and 40 locations worldwide, and is parent to various successful business units including:

Sunway Property, one of the anchors of Sunway Group with an extensive portfolio of award-winning properties on Malaysian soil as well as abroad. Its success spurs market expansion to other countries such as China, India, Cambodia, Vietnam and Singapore. Sunway Property also recently acquired 691 acres of land in Medini Iskandar, Johor,
Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway Group’s healthcare provider. Sunway Medical Centre was established in November 1999 and boasts of the first private hospital to perform Deep Brain Stimulation for the management of Parkinson’s disease. Another noteworthy achievement would be the healthcare provider’s implementation of The Cochlear Implant Programme to treat profound hearing loss,
Sunway Lagoon Theme Park, the internationally famed award-winning theme park that currently houses the world’s largest water ride, The Vuvuzela,
Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall, Malaysia’s first ever themed shopping and entertainment hub,
Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, which forms part of Sunway Group’s Hospitality range boasting of five star hotels with world class convention, meetings and exhibition facilities, luxurious villas, serviced apartments, four and three star range of hotels to technical services, franchise management as well as hotel marketing affiliation services,
Sunway Education Group which consists of amongst others; Sunway University, Sunway College, Monash University Sunway Campus and Le Cordon Bleu, Malaysia.

To commemorate Sunway’s 40th anniversary and the launch of Sunway Pals, and in line with the pioneering theme of the Sunway Pals Programme and the system powering it, a number of the Sunway Group’s earliest and forefront customers were invited to attend the event. These include the first buyers of properties launched by Sunway Property, the family members of the first infant that was delivered at the Sunway Medical Centre, the first Sunway Lagoon customer who signed up for the theme park’s membership card, the first few tenants of Sunway Pyramid, the first guests of Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, as well as two generations of individuals within the same family who studied at Sunway Education institutions.

As a mark of gratitude and appreciation, these selected individuals were presented with a preloaded Sunway Pals loyalty card and those interested were also guided on the steps to download the app which allows users to ‘go card-less’ where the Sunway Pals Programme is concerned.

Under the Sunway loyalty programme — called Sunway Pals — members will earn one point for every dollar spent in participating merchants’ stores with additional points available on special offers. Every 100 points accumulated will translate into a dollar which is then redeemable at participating merchants’ stores.

The software system powering Sunway Pals Loyalty Programme is a unique innovation among retail loyalty programmes and is designed to suit any merchant and any member. In addition to the many features available, the system not only allows for the conventional card system and EDC terminal support, but also comes with card-less capabilities — a move that is expected to resonate well with consumers. Members can opt to use a Sunway Pals App downloaded on their smartphone for points awarding and redemption.

“The Sunway Pals programme is the Sunway Group’s flagship loyalty programme, it offers free membership, both a card as well as card-less option, with fuss-free earning of Sunway loyalty points, the equivalent of cash rebates,” said Evan Cheah, Executive Director – President’s Office & Information Technology and one of the main drivers behind Sunway Pals programme. “Fusionex is our exclusive loyalty program provider and has deployed for us its own cutting-edge proprietary technology with Big Data capabilities. I am happy to have Fusionex and their world-class leadership team as a key partner in our Sunway Pals program, and we are committed to delivering a continuously evolving loyalty programme; one that gives strong value to our customers and society, and is vastly different from any other programme in Malaysia.”

“Sunway is undoubtedly a highly reputable group and its diversified business units has an excellent track record of contributing to the society and touching lives within communities,” said Ivan Teh, Fusionex Managing Director. “They continuously look at innovation and methods to better serve their customers and ecosystem. The Sunway Pals Programme powered by Fusionex brings about a manifestation, a unique breakthrough in the field of customer loyalty and Big Data. We are very privileged and would like to thank the Sunway Group for its confidence in selecting Fusionex’s technology for its Loyalty Programme, which confidence was instrumental in making this initiative a reality.”

YBhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, AO, Founder & Chairman of Sunway Group, officiating the Sunway Pals Programme Launch in conjunction with the Sunway Group’s 40th Anniversary

The Sunway Pals App has been launched in Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall as well as Sunway Lagoon Theme Park, and is expected to be implemented nationwide across Sunway’s diversified business units over the course of the next few months. Sunway is confident that the Sunway Pals Programme will be a revolutionary move which will drive consumer convenience and satisfaction to a whole new level in its bid to improve the community experience wherever Sunway is involved.

Global Maritime Designs Offshore Fish Farm

leave a comment »

OSLO and HOUSTON, March 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ —

Global Maritime has performed the technical design and engineering (FEED) of an offshore based fish farm for Ocean Farming AS in Norway, a subsidiary of the SalMar Group. The new design combines the best of existing technology and solutions from the Norwegian fish farming industry and the offshore oil and gas sector.

(Photo: )

The facility is a permanently moored semi-submersible structure with favourable motion characteristics, suitable for operation in exposed locations with water depths between 100 to 300 meters, where the aqua biological conditions are more ideal for aquaculture on “the fish’s terms”. The project is based on proven technology developed for optimal fish farming.

According to Ocean Farming AS, this is a great example of combining Global Maritime’s expertise from the oil and gas sector, with their own, within fish farming. Also Global Maritime’s project manager views the cooperative nature of the project as a key benefit: “The concept has been developed with Ocean Farming, and we have applied established regulations, design principles and methods from our rig design portfolio, in a new field of operation.”

Feasibility studies started in 2012. During spring 2013, Ocean Farming presented a conceptual solution that is suitable for installation and operation in exposed ocean (offshore) areas. The facility combines construction and streamlined/automated operations to create competitive production costs. Ocean Farming has received grants from Innovation Norway to develop this project.

A basin model test has been performed by MARINTEK (Sintef), which confirms suitable performance of the facility during harsh weather conditions, as documented in the design by Global Maritime.

Canada and the United Kingdom join forces to tackle climate change in Africa and Asia

leave a comment »

NAIROBI, Kenya, March 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) have announced today the selection of four multi-partner research initiatives aimed at tackling the impacts of climate change in Africa and Asia. Funded under the Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA) program, a seven-year, $70 million research initiative, this work takes a fresh approach to understanding climate change and adaptation in some of the most vulnerable regions of Africa and Asia.

Organized around four multi-regional consortia, CARIAA will focus on three global “hot spots,” namely semi-arid regions in Africa and South and Central Asia; deltas in Africa and South Asia; and the Himalayan River Basins, with a view to contributing to effective policies and action on the ground. The program straddles countries, regions, and sectors, using the hot spot itself as a lens for research. In Africa, CARIAA will address two hotspots: semi-arid regions in East, West, and Southern Africa and the Volta and Nile river Deltas.

“The research will produce practical advice for policymakers and local decision-makers. It will help business leaders, economic ministries, and regional economic communities develop policies and investment strategies that reduce poverty while strengthening adaptation,” said IDRC President, Jean Lebel. “It will also shed light, for example, on how firms can respond to new market opportunities and threats created by climate change and other key drivers in semi-arid lands, and how governments can support them in adapting to climate change impacts on their production and value chains.”

“CARIAA’s focus on developing a robust evidence base for what works and what doesn’t in assisting some of the most vulnerable communities in the world to build resilience to extreme weather events and adapt to climate change is very welcome,” said Virinder Sharma, Climate Change Advisor, DFID Kenya. “I am particularly encouraged to see that the programme aims to work at all levels, and plans to engage stakeholders from local to national, regional and international levels from the outset. Particularly significant is the focus of this programme on bridging research to policy and practice. This process of collaborative development will be important in ensuring the evidence is useful to the relevant decision makers”

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report that will be released this March projects that the world’s dry regions will become even drier due to global warming. These already harsh environments will face higher temperatures and shrinking water sources, putting further stress on those who depend on natural resources for their livelihoods, such as in farming, fishing, or forestry.

By mid-century, average summer temperatures across large portions of Africa could exceed the hottest temperatures on record, leading to water shortages and crop failures. The length of the growing season may decline by up to 20 percent across parts of the West African Sahel, Southern Africa, and Eastern Africa, the report adds.

Climate change is also expected to affect coastal regions such as the Nile Delta, which is highly vulnerable to seal level rise and soil salinization, leading to the potential displacement of around 1.3 million people by 2050. Similar impacts are projected in major deltas in India and Bangladesh, where more than 100 million people may be affected.

The stress of these climatic changes is compounded by development pressures in areas that are already fragile. Kenya’s Rift Valley, for example, is experiencing erratic rains, with alternating droughts and floods affecting people, livestock, rangelands, wildlife, and infrastructure. Unplanned land-use changes and unstable patterns of land tenure are adding to these climate stresses. Farmers and pastoralists with little access to capital are most at risk. But the changes underway will affect both urban and rural people. If high-end projections for climate change come to pass, by the second half of this century entire livelihoods systems may need to be transformed in these semi-arid lands.
