New Brainboxes Ethernet to DIO module enables process engineers to communicate in any environment, from any location
SINGAPORE, Feb. 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc(LSE:ECM), the world’s leading high service distributor of electronics and maintenance products, is stocking the new ED-588 industrial specification input/output (I/O) module from Brainboxes, a leading developer and manufacturer of PC communication cards.
The ED-588 is a remote Ethernet to digital I/O (DIO) device featuring eight non-isolated digital input channels and eight digital output channels, with an integral DIN rail mount and slim shape (22.6mm wide) that uses minimal space. The module contains a powerful ARM 80 MHz 32-bit CPU, offering robust, intelligent control capability to enable system interface on the factory floor. The ED-588 has a gateway RS485 serial port that can be used to connect to industry-standard NuDAM, eDAM and ADAM modules – a staple of process control systems.
A wide range redundant dual power input (+5VDC to +30VDC) accommodates variation in the +24VDC factory floor supply and allows alternative power sources. A second power supply can be fitted as a back-up to prevent down time should one power source fail. Power can also be sourced using 5 Volt power from any computer USB port for configuration away from the installation site. A watchdog feature allows independent known good states to be set for power up, comms link watchdog, and hardware watchdog. Programmable time range allows full control. Removable, individually numbered colour coded blocks and ports ease installation and simplify wiring.
Capable of driving high current and high voltage loads, the ED-588 is ideal for inductive, capacitive and resistive loads such as CNC machines, stepper motors, heating ventilation and air conditioning. Operating at an extended temperature range of between -30ºC and +80ºC enables the device to cope with extreme changes of temperature in harsh environments. The CPU temperature and power supply status can be monitored via the web interface or programmatically through ASCII commands.
The ED-588 is implemented using a Microsoft® Windows® COM port driver that is compatible with industry standard software packages such as LabView, MATLAB®, and Agilent VEE, and supports a range of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) including Microsoft .NET – C#®, Visual Basic®, C++ and JavaScript. Drivers are available for the latest operating systems including Windows® 8, and the user interface enables monitoring and control from Android devices.
Eamonn Walsh, Managing Director of Brainboxes, said, “Brainboxes started in the industry making DIO cards, and they are so reliable we have customers still using them nearly 30 years on. We are returning to our roots in offering solutions for Digital In/Out, keeping the same reliability and quality of build but with new features that meet the needs of the modern process and control environment. The ED-588 is the first of many products in our upcoming range of remote I/O devices.”
“The ED-588 will benefit process control engineers who need real-time status updates of devices in the field. It is simple to use, can be installed in minutes, and meets the increasing demand for devices that are capable of remote monitoring and control via a network using any device,” said Kevin Shield, Global Head of Automation and Control, RS Components.
The ED-588 is available to purchase from RS Components direct from stock for same-day despatch.

Zensorium Unveils Tinke for Android

leave a comment »

– Innovative sensory device for managing personal fitness and wellness is now available for Android smartphones –
SINGAPORE, Feb. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Due to popular demand, Tinke (pronounced tink), the innovative sensory device for smartphones that helps users manage personal fitness and wellness with the touch of a finger, is now available for use on Android, the world’s most widely-used smartphone platform. After successfully launching in 2013 for use with iOS devices, Tinke has seen massive success and consumer demand, with global sales to more than 30 countries.
Tinke for Android
Tinke for Android
“Our goal is simple: to empower individuals to be mindful of fitness and wellness and lead healthier lives,” said Juliana Chua, Principal of Zensorium’s Business Innovation Group. “We’re excited that Tinke can engage with more people now that it’s available for use with Android devices.”
Tinke uses optical sensing technologies to quantify fitness and relaxation levels for easy understanding and comparison. By placing a fingertip on the sensing platform, Tinke measures and quantifies four key health parameters within seconds: heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygen levels and heart rate variability.
The first three parameters, heart rate, respiratory rate and blood oxygen level, establish a close relationship for measuring cardio-respiratory fitness. The fourth parameter, heart rate variability, caters to the assessment of an individual’s autonomic nervous system, detecting levels of stress for wellness management. Today more than ever, stress is an overlooked aspect of health, but if kept in check, it can reduce the onset of many physical and mental health issues. By understanding the functions of their bodies better, Tinke users can take steps towards improving their fitness and wellness.
The result of over three years of R&D, the simplification and compactness of Tinke’s design is made possible by overcoming the challenges of signal processing and architecture design. Tinke for Android connects via Bluetooth and is powered by a Lithium-ion polymer batter that requires charging approximately once per month.
Tinke’s social media integration features allow users to easily share measurements and results online across the Tinke network or Facebook. By sharing their data through the Tinke network, users can update friends of their progress and inform healthcare providers of their latest results. With Tinke’s global comparisons feature, users can also see where they rank against others in the Tinke network around the world.
Pricing and Availability: Tinke for Android is available in over 30 countries at US$129 in grey and orange.
About Zensorium: Headquartered in Singapore, Zensorium is committed to empowering individuals in elevating their quality of life through the use of innovative sensing devices. Their flagship product, Tinke, is an optical sensor that monitors fitness and wellness with the touch of a finger.
In January 2014, at the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) Innovations Design and Engineering Awards in Las Vegas (USA), Zensorium was named a finalist in the Mobile Apps Showdown and was an honoree in the Health and Fitness category at the CES Innovations Design and Engineering Awards.

Showbox Introducing Lock Screen Advertising (LSA) in Singapore

leave a comment »

SINGAPORE, Feb. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Showbox Group Pte Ltd., a Singapore based start-up, has developed an Android application called Showbox.
Showbox delivers advertisements to smartphone lock screens and pays users for unlocking their phones. Each time a user wakes their phone, a full-screen advertisement will be displayed, replacing the default Android lock screen.
This invention revolutionises the mobile ads industry, changing the way how advertisements are presented to consumers.
“Showbox enables you to make easy money by just unlocking your phone!” commented John Zhou, founder and CEO of Showbox Group. “An average user will glance at the phone at least 50 times a day, making the lockscreen one of the most valuable uncharted territories in mobile advertising.”
Showbox allows brands to connect with consumers each time they unlock their phones. Users can instantly engage with the advertisement that they like by simply doing a left slide on the screen.
Showbox has drawn attention from popular brands such as DBS, OSIM and Reebonz. The benefit to the users is that they get paid by simply unlocking their phone — something they do all the time, every day.
The beauty of Showbox is that it puts the latest promotions and product information at a user’s fingertips. There is no doubt that traditional banners and pop-up advertisements annoy. Showbox seeks to bridge this gap by presenting beautiful full screen advertisements to users with minimal disruptions, along with a monetary incentive.
Users are granted different levels of credits each time they unlock the lockscreen. When the credits accumulate to a certain amount, users can exchange the credits for vouchers, pay their phone bills, or simply cash out.
Showbox believes they have a social obligation to fulfil. They have collaborated with Community Chest to help the less fortunate, incorporating a feature that allows users to donate their points to a charitable cause, helping children in need. “Every child deserves an equal opportunity to reach his fullest potential and enjoy life just like any of us,” shared John.
Showbox beta launched on 7 February 2014 in Singapore. It can be downloaded from Google Play Store and is available for all android mobile devices.

“Mobile Health” Shows Big Potential from Small Beginnings

leave a comment »

NUREMBERG, Germany /PRNewswire/ — Mobile connected health devices, such as blood pressure monitors and personal weighing scales, are showing strong increase in sales in European countries, despite still being a minority market.
According market data from GfK, the number of mobile-connected blood pressure monitors purchased last year rose by 42% across Great Britain, Germany, France and the Netherlands, compared to 2012, while connected personal weighing scales rose by an enormous 88%.
Despite this strong growth, connected devices account for only a small percentage of the overall market at present. Last year, connected devices made up 5.5% of the total value of blood pressure monitors sold across these four countries, up from 3.7% in 2012, and 3.3% of connected personal scales, up from 1.8%. Looking at individual countries, however, connected personal scales already represent 6.3% value share in Germany and a very respectable 12.1% in the Netherlands. And, in France, connected blood pressure monitors claim a huge 17.4% value share.
Udo Jansen, a Global Director at GfK, believes that the connected devices market could offer significant market opportunities, saying, “Consumers are willing to pay around 100EUR more for a connected personal scale and 50EUR more for a connected blood pressure monitor, compared to the non-connected models. With 2014 being the year of ‘mobile health’ as well as wearable technology devices, the popular media buzz around these topics is likely to have a positive effect on consumers’ awareness of the potential benefits on offer. Consumers today expect to receive immediate answers and information just by running a quick check through their smartphone or tablet. This also includes their personal health condition and activity level. Fitness Trackers in this context represent the next big trend, as we are currently experiencing.”
Health & Fitness Trackers are a new product group that GfK is now auditing, which track a person’s daily activity level by counting steps, distance, calories burned and sometimes even the hours of sleep. They are not only a personal control instrument, but also a lifestyle product – and more and more of these fitness gadgets are entering the market from well-known manufacturers in different industries.
GfK will be sharing more market data and insight on this and other mobile topics at the World Mobile Congress 2014 in Barcelona, 24-27 February. Visit GfK at stand F50 in Hall 8.1 App Plant, or contact Arndt Polifke on M +49 1 718 643 257 / Arndt.Polifke@gfk.com

TriReme Medical Signs Distribution Agreement with Cordis Corporation

PLEASANTON, California and SINGAPORE/PRNewswire/ — TriReme Medical LLC, a subsidiary of Singapore based QT Vascular Ltd., announced today that it has signed a broad distribution agreement with Cordis Corporation for the exclusive distribution of its unique Chocolate® PTA Balloon Angioplasty Catheter, with an option for additional TriReme portfolio products. This agreement will expand TriReme’s commercial footprint and allow the company to focus on its promising development pipeline.
“Cordis has an unparalleled track record in creating and building new and innovative product categories that have dramatically changed and improved clinical practice. We are honored to partner with Cordis and look forward to our collaboration,” said Dr. Eitan Konstantino, President and CEO of TriReme.
The Chocolate® PTA Balloon Catheter, approved in the U.S. in December 2011, is a unique PTA balloon that is designed to allow for atraumatic dilatation in treating peripheral artery disease (PAD). The Chocolate® PTA Balloon Catheter is indicated for balloon dilatation of lesions in the peripheral vasculature, including the iliac, femoral, ilio-femoral, popliteal, infra-popliteal and renal arteries. Not for use in the coronary or cerebral vasculature. Its unique nitinol constraining structure creates uniform “pillows” that make contact with the vessel and “valleys” that allow for plaque modification and are designed to relieve stress upon inflation.
Data from the first 350 patients in the CHOCOLATE® BAR Registry were recently presented at the 2014 Leipzig Interventional Course (LINC) earlier this month. In this all-comers study that included many patients suffering from advanced atherosclerotic disease in their legs and patients at high risk of amputation (Rutherford 5 and 6, total occlusions, long and calcified lesions), the use of the Chocolate® PTA Balloon Catheter was associated with high rates of treatment success and limb preservation and very low rates of dissections and bail-out stenting.
“We are delighted to see TriReme gain this level of global recognition,” stated Mr. Michael Kleine, board member of QT Vascular and former CEO of Biosensors International. “TriReme management has been building a valuable business by driving strong market adoption for its products backed with excellent clinical data.”
About Peripheral Arterial Disease
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is caused by the build-up of fatty substances that collect and adhere to the linings of the arteries, in a process known as atherosclerosis. The build-up causes the internal lining of the artery to thicken, narrowing the artery and limiting blood flow to vital tissues and organs. Commonly affected arteries include those located in the legs, arms, neck and kidneys. The vast majority of patients with PAD also have significant concomitant coronary artery disease (CAD) and a high proportion of morbidity and mortality in these patients is related to myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke or cardiovascular death. PAD is estimated to affect 202 million people worldwide.1
