The Festival, which ran from 9 to 26 January, included a mix of ticketed and free programming that captivated locals and visitors alike.
This year’s Festival included a renewed focus on classical music and large-scale visual arts projects. Two hugely popular installations wereSacrilege, Jeremy Deller’s inflatable Stonehenge, and Merchants Store, Leandro Erlich’s gravity-defying interactive artwork, which together attracted more than 120,000 active participants, as well as tens of thousands of onlookers. The new Festival Village in Hyde Park attracted more than one hundred thousand visitors with a program ranging from free family workshops to late-night circus cabaret shows.
Highlights in the ticketed program included both small- and large-scale projects, from intimate musical discoveries in our Spiegeltent early music series to the unique suburban spiritual tour The Calling, the centrepiece Baroque dance opera Dido & Aeneas and the world premiere of Black Diggers, a co-production with Queensland Theatre Company re-telling the stories of Indigenous soldiers who fought in World War One, directed by Wesley Enoch.
More than 1030 artists from 17 countries performed in 144 projects. The 2014 Festival achieved 124 sold-out performances and reached an audience of well over 500,000 visitors across its free and ticketed program. The smallest venue was the one-seater ‘folk-in-a-box’ stage, the largest was The Domain for two free open-air concerts on the opening and closing weekends.
“Our 2014 Sydney Festival was a true celebration of our city in summer through arts and entertainment,” said Festival Director Lieven Bertels. “A team of over 100 staff and 400 volunteers across 2160 shifts made this Festival one of the most enjoyable ever. Both the return to classical music and opera, and the opportunities created for Australian artists received critical acclaim and proved popular with our audiences. Over the last two Festivals, we have premiered 23 new Australian works, from fun kids’ concerts to theatre and dance productions of national importance such as Black Diggers and Am I. Combining these arts offerings with easily accessible touch points, including our large-scale visual art works and our new Festival Village, underlined our position as Australia’s leading summer festival.”

Far East Energy Announces Production Reaches 1.8 MMcf/d and Results of Additional Appraisal Wells

leave a comment »

HOUSTON, Jan. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Far East Energy Corporation (OTCBB:FEEC), the U.S. listed company that operates the Shouyang Block Coalbed Methane (CBM) Production Sharing Contract (PSC) in Shanxi Province, People’s Republic of China, announces a continued rise in gas production from the Shouyang Block since the latest release made on January 7, 2014.

Following its January 7th announcement that gas production at Shouyang had reached 1,676,518 cubic feet per day (1,677 Mcf/d), the Company is pleased to announce that as of January 20, 2014, production from the Shouyang Block has reached 1,797,499 cubic feet per day (1,797 Mcf/d).

This is up a further 7% from the production figure released January 7th, and up 143% from the 738 Mcf/d produced for the week ending November 12, 2013. Production growth continues to be seen from both new and older wells.

Commenting, CEO Mike McElwrath said, “Since mid-November, we have seen daily gas production increase by over 1 million cubic feet per day, and this steady and significant production growth is what we have been seeking with our diligent dewatering efforts. We believe a tipping point has been reached.”

The Company also announced that the testing of eight additional appraisal wells has yielded impressive results in terms of gas content with all wells showing good to exceptional permeability. The test results for the eight wells are: (1) SYS03 at 693 standard cubic feet per ton (scf/t) and 45 millidarcies (mD); (2) SYE06 at 701 scf/t and 11 mD; (3) SYSE09 at 667 scf/t and 20 mD; (4) SYE10 at 1,019 scf/t and 10 mD; (5) SYW11 at 637scf/t and 12 mD; (6) SYW13 at 577 scf/t and 85 mD; (7) SYE16 at 760 scf/ton and 40 mD; and, (8) SYE18 at 916 scf/t and 40 mD.

“These are exceptional gas content and permeability numbers,” McElwrath said, “which continue to verify our belief that the entire Shouyang block has significant potential.”

In response to questions asked at the recently held Credit Suisse E&P corporate day in Singapore, the Company’s Head of Asian Investor Relations, Huw Williams, said, “The recent strong growth in gas production confirms our view that Shouyang is a stand-out CBM Block in China, combining unique high-permeability coals, with a 20-year take-or-pay pipeline contract at $9 per Mcf. The extensive drilling, fracing and production program in 2013 has significantly de-risked the engineering and geological aspects of the project and paves the way for a strong 2014.”

P2i, Global Leader in Liquid Repellent Nano-Coatings, Marks Ten-Year Anniversary of Spin-Out From UK Ministry of Defence

leave a comment »

ABINGDON, England, Jan. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — P2i, the world’s most advanced nano-coatings company, today celebrates the 10th anniversary of its spin-out from the UK Ministry of Defence with the announcement of three key milestones:
P2i’s Splash-proof water-repellent coating has now been applied to 50 million electronic devices worldwide, including over 20 million mobile phones such as Motorola’s Moto X and Moto G, giving them significant protection from water damage
P2i’s Dunkable™ technology, offering cutting-edge enhanced water protection for electronic devices, will be made available on mobile phones for the first time in 2014
P2i recently opened its first dedicated office in China, in the global technology hub of Shenzhen
The origins of P2i lie in a PhD research project at the University of Durham undertaken by Dr Stephen Coulson, now Chief Technology Officer of P2i, between 1996-99. That project was to create clothing for soldiers that would effectively repel chemical warfare agents while allowing normal freedom of movement. Following further development within the Ministry of Defence, Coulson founded P2i, as its sole employee, on 29 January 2004.
Today P2i is the global leader in liquid repellent nano-coatings, helping companies around the world give their products life-span enhancing protection against damaging elements such as water, oil, sweat, and mud. Using a patented cold plasma process, P2i’s technology coats objects with an invisible protective coating 1/1000th the thickness of a human hair. Objects P2i has coated include a wide range of high-value products from mobile phones to clothing, footwear, hearing aids, medical devices, filtration systems and Formula 1 car nose cones.
Headquartered near Oxford in England, P2i’s market-leading technology is protected by over 175 granted patents. The company has roughly 100 employees and its nano-coating systems for high-volume processing are installed at over 100 of its customers’ manufacturing facilities, including at factories in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, the USA, China, South Korea, Indonesia and Germany. P2i has attracted over GBP 47 million from backers and earlier this month Tudor Brown, a founder and former president of ARM, joined P2i’s board.
Carl Francis, CEO of P2i, comments: “With our new Dunkable™ technology now rolling out, a global footprint, and very strong momentum particularly in our electronics division, we feel confident that our steady and sustainable growth will continue.”

Microsoft releases global survey revealing widespread belief in developing and developed nations that personal technology is transforming lives for the better

leave a comment »

— Findings: technology strongly impacts business innovation including starting new businesses; developing countries believe strongly that personal tech spurs job opportunities and eliminates harmful economic gaps, boosts education.

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — A new global survey of Internet users conducted by Microsoft Corp. reveals distinct regional findings and differing viewpoints between the developed and developing world. However, overwhelmingly the more than 10,000 people surveyed from 10 nations said they embrace personal technology, particularly in emerging markets, and see it as the foundation of innovation and economic empowerment.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)

Microsoft unveiled the results of its new survey today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in the report titled, “Views from Around the Globe: How Personal Technology is Changing Our Lives.”

Mark Penn, Microsoft Executive Vice President of Advertising and Strategy, presented the poll’s findings followed by a panel discussion moderated by award-winning journalist and author Maria Bartiromo. The panel included Marc R. Benioff, chairman and CEO, Salesforce.com; Maurice Levy, chairman and CEO, Publicis Group; Bill McDermott, co-CEO, SAP; Alan Murray, president, Pew Research Center; and former U.S. Treasury Secretary and current Charles W. Elliot university professor, Harvard University, Lawrence H. Summers.

“Whether you live in a world capital or a remote village, personal technology is seen as empowering and as a vehicle to individual economic growth,” Penn said. “Despite varying rates of personal technology adoption and cultural differences, there is an overwhelming sense globally that improvements are being experienced across the board.”

Among the key findings of the study are these:

A majority of the people surveyed around the world believe that personal technology has the most positive impact on innovation in business and empowering people to start a new business.
People surveyed in developing countries — especially Brazil, Russia, India and China — believe that personal technology is creating job opportunities and helping bridge economic gaps.
People in China say that personal technology has positively impacted personal freedom more than people in any other country surveyed.
Those in developing countries — especially India — say that personal technology is improving education, health and healthcare.
In Brazil, people say that personal technology had a strong impact on arts and culture.
In China and India, they say their quality of life has improved due to personal technology.

Although personal technology was seen overwhelmingly as a positive force in both developed and developing countries, there were concerns that focused on personal safety and security, family bonds, and, most significantly, privacy. Interestingly, the survey found that the developing countries are more willing to trade privacy for security. Despite privacy concerns, however, nearly three-quarters of parents around the world want their children to have more, not less, access to personal technology. This is particularly true in developing countries, where parents are especially supportive of increased access to technology. Opinions are mixed in developed countries, where more parents feel there should be limits to technology access.

About the poll
The Microsoft poll was conducted between Dec. 26, 2013, and Jan. 3, 2014, and surveyed 10,009 Internet users in the United States, France, Brazil, Russia, China, India, Japan, Germany, Mexico and Turkey. The results were then weighted based on the size of the Internet populations in each of the 10 countries. The full survey findings and comprehensive analysis of the poll can be found at http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_blog/archive/2014/01/23/personal-technology-is-changing-lives-around-the-world-what-we-learned-from-talking-to-10-000-people-in-10-countries.aspx.

Frost & Sullivan Applauds Flexera Software for Extending its Market Share Lead in the Software-Enforced Software Monetization Market

leave a comment »

– The strong synergies of its interrelated product lines give Flexera Software added brand value and competitive heft
MOUNTAIN VIEW, California /PRNewswire/ — Based on its recent analysis of the software monetization market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Flexera Software with the 2013 Global Frost & Sullivan Market Share Leadership Award for capturing the highest market share by revenue in the software-enforced segment of this industry and for continued strong growth despite flat revenues in the software markets it serves.
Flexera Software increased its share in the software-enforced market segment from nearly 45 percent revenue share in 2011 to more than 48 percent in 2013. Flexera Software has a particularly strong presence in the North American market, but continues to grow within Europe and Asia as well. Similarly, while it is the strongest in the B2B segment, it is carving out a bigger share of the pie in the embedded and cloud segments.
“The FlexNet Producer Suite is a proven technology in the traditional desktop software markets; it is also increasingly relevant in embedded use cases where Flexera Software manages intellectual property and feature editions in software-powered appliances and devices,” said Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Avni Rambhia. “The suite enables a comprehensive set of supported business models, entitlement features, use cases and back-end integration capability with customer relationship management and enterprise resource planning systems.”
In addition to its FlexNet Producer Suite, the company offers Software License Optimization solutions to enterprises to streamline and optimize the use of their software licenses from such vendors as Microsoft, IBM, Symantec, SAP, and Oracle. It also offers Application Readiness solutions such as AdminStudio Suite and App Portal, to help enterprises confidently discover assess compatibility, model, manage and package applications for reliable deployment on premise, to virtualized and cloud-based environments and mobile devices. Flexera Software’s InstallShield is a widely used software installation product.
FlexNet Licensing is popular across many segments of the desktop software industry. For example, FlexNet Licensing continues to be the monetization system of choice for protecting popular plug-in-based platforms, where the base application and most plug-ins leverage FlexNet Licensing and FlexNet Operations for their entitlement management needs. This not only contributes to existing market share, but provides added entry barriers to competing solutions, as enterprise customers prefer their entire application suite to use a single software monetization solution.
“Offering license management solutions for the enterprise users of software serves to complete the software license supply chain, and provides insights that are used to reinforce and enhance the licensing solutions for software vendors,” noted Rambhia. “On the product portfolio side, Flexera Software has chosen to maintain its software technology approach, relying on hardware specialists to provide dongles while maintaining its core competency in higher-margin software solutions.”
Flexera Software employs a value-based pricing model, wherein it charges a small percentage of the total software revenues as a licensing fee rather than a fixed per-unit fee. This is particularly effective in cases where vendors sell only a few thousand licenses per year of software that require highly expensive licenses. It also enables relatively small software vendors to deploy Flexera Software’s monetization solutions at relatively risk-free price points. By incentivizing vendors to purchase multi-year subscriptions of their monetization technology, Flexera offers further value, while itself gaining stable revenue streams.
Flexera Software has achieved its enviable market position on the strength of its established product and brand, effective industry outreach, and significant and successful execution of strategic growth initiatives through both acquisitions and organic growth. As the use of software monetization technologies in the embedded sector becomes more widespread and cloud-based opportunities mature, Flexera Software is expected to enjoy a long run at the helm of the software-enforced software monetization market.
Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis, and extensive secondary research in order to identify best practices in the industry.
About Flexera Software
Flexera Software helps application producers and enterprises increase application usage and the value they derive from their software. Our Application Usage Management solutions are essential to ensure continuous licensing compliance, optimized software investments and to future-proof businesses against the risks and costs of constantly changing technology. Over 80,000 customers turn to Flexera Software as a trusted and neutral source for the knowledge and expertise we have gained as the marketplace leader in licensing, installation and compliance for over 20 years and for the automation and intelligence designed into our products. At the Mobile World Congress 2014, Sensirion AG is presenting its latest humidity and temperature sensor SHTW1, which opens up new possibilities in the wearable and mobile market with its chip-scale packaging technology. This global innovation combines minimal size with maximum performance to define the latest generation of humidity and temperature sensors, enabling unprecedented opportunities. Sensirion creates space for new ideas – there is no limit to the range of possible uses of the tiny SHTW1.
With its size and low energy consumption, the new SHTW1 humidity and temperature sensor meets the exacting expectations of the consumer electronics industry. Like all Sensirion sensors, SHTW1 is based on CMOSens® Technology, which integrates the sensor component and the evaluation circuit on a single semiconductor chip. Sensirion is the first company to use wafer-level chip-scale packaging technology in humidity and temperature sensors. This means SHTW1’s package is no larger than the CMOSens® Chip itself, yet the SHTW1 has the same functionality as conventional digital humidity and temperature sensors. So when it comes to usability, space is no longer a concern.
With miniature dimensions of just 1.3 x 0.7 x 0.5 mm, SHTW1 will revolutionize the market and create the foundation for an endless array of applications. SHTW1 could soon give glasses, watches, articles of clothing or cell phones the ability to sense temperature and humidity, making it possible to integrate the measurement of our environment into every facet of our lives.
The operating voltage of 1.8V and the low power consumption of just 2 microwatt at 1 measurement per second provide an optimal basis for using the sensor in small, mobile devices. As the specifications demonstrate, performance was not sacrificed to achieve the tiny size: it measures relative humidity across a range of 0% to 100% RH, with a typical accuracy of +/-3% RH. The temperature measurement ranges from -30 degrees C to 100 degrees C with a typical accuracy of +/- 0.3 degrees C. The completely calibrated sensor features an I2C interface and is reflow solderable.
With millions of sensors already in use, Sensirion’s years of experience and the competent application know-how it offers its customers are invaluable in the successful integration of the sensor in complex solutions. It has once again developed the smallest sensor with the biggest performance on the market with the SHTW1 humidity and temperature sensor. Combined with first-rate implementation support, Sensirion is undoubtedly a step ahead of the competition.
Visit us at the Mobile World Conference 2014 in Barcelona in hall 5 booth 5D70.

Frost & Sullivan: How to Deal with BYOT, or the Shadow IT Your Employee Brings to Work Everyday

leave a comment »

— Frost & Sullivan’s senior-level IT event, ConNEXTions 2014, explores the IT trends driving innovation and market transformation

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — The “bring your own technology” (BYOT) trend is evidence of a climactic shift in technology’s discovery and adoption. Every day, employees use more of their own technology at work, including devices, services and applications, instead of employers being the first to establish new technology at the office. Frost & Sullivan explores these trends and others during the 2nd Annual ConNEXTions 2014: A Frost & Sullivan Executive MindXchange, taking place Feb. 9-11, 2014 in San Francisco, Calif.

As a preview to ConNEXTions 2014, Frost & Sullivan introduces a six-step strategy for dealing with the consumerization of IT in your organization:

Define the mobile workers and strong collaborators in your organization
Identify the consumer technology currently in use
Assess which tools have a business benefit
Determine what technology to upgrade or deploy
Evaluate where benefits and savings lay
Set policies and procedures for the use of consumer services and devices

“Historically, employees were introduced to new technology at the office, and adopted it at home only when its value to their personal lives became clear, and prices went down,” said Frost & Sullivan Enterprise Communications and Collaboration Research Vice President Melanie Turek. “Our research finds the tables are turning. And there’s a reason so many employees are using their personal smart phones and tablets, services and applications — they enable their own productivity, making it easier to stay in touch with colleagues and customers, and up-to-date on company news and information.”

Turek and co-presenters will further evaluate this trend and others during their session, “Keeping Pace with Technology and Market Directions” at ConNEXTions 2014. The event brings together senior-level IT and telecommunications executives to build an action plan to capture and create more value from IT investments, now and in the future. The event closes with the 2014 CIO Impact Awards Gala (www.frost.com/cioawards), recognizing CIOs whose teams had the most positive impact on their enterprises’ strategic innovation, and who delivered a significant competitive advantage.

“CIOs and technology leaders should take advantage of BYOT for many reasons, but the biggest is its impact on innovation,” concluded Turek. “As employees embrace mobility, collaboration and social media in particular, they are using these tools at work to share expertise, knowledge and data — in real time, with people within and outside the organization. This leads to better processes, faster outcomes, improved customer experiences, and new products and services — in a word, innovation.”

Hong Kong property is first hotel in Asia to be honoured at global awards ceremony
HONG KONG /PRNewswire/ — Hotel ICON was among the honourees at the prestigious United Nation’s World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Awards for Excellence and Innovation in Tourism 2013, an annual event acknowledging tourism leaders from around the world.
Hotel ICON
Hotel ICON
Hotel ICON was one of the four finalists in contention for the UNWTO Ulysses Award for Innovation in Enterprises, a prize launched in 2003 honouring the world’s most sustainable and profitable tourism initiatives. Marking a first for the competition, Hotel ICON is the only hotel in Asia to receive this honour. Further enhancing its reputation as a ground-breaking property, in 2013 Hotel ICON was the sole candidate from Greater China and also had the distinction of being the only hotel to earn a nomination. The 13 finalists across four categories comprised mainly non-governmental organisations involved in conservation, and government-sponsored tourism initiatives.
A 262-room luxury hotel, Hotel ICON earned a place among the finalists for its commitment to integrating teaching, learning and research. Located in the Tsim Sha Tsui tourism district, Hotel ICON has always been a hotel with a distinct purpose – to become the global centre of excellence in education and research in hospitality and tourism. Providing interactive and dynamic learning environment, Hotel ICON serves as a valuable resource centre, offering hoteliers, students and members of the public invaluable trade insights and industry knowledge, as well as fostering innovation in the hospitality industry. With this latest recognition from UNWTO, this unique business model and collaboration, supported by the Hong Kong government, and implemented by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has been endorsed by one of the most prestigious organisations in tourism industry.
The UNWTO Awards, created by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), are the flagship awards for the global tourism sector. Every year, they are conferred by the UNWTO and the UNWTO Knowledge Network to highlight and showcase innovation and application of Knowledge in Tourism.
At the UNWTO Awards Ceremony in Madrid, Spain, Hotel ICON was named second runner-up in its category. “We are honoured to have received the UNWTO Ulysses Award for Innovation in Enterprises,” said Richard Hatter, General Manager of Hotel ICON. “Hotel ICON is an important facility in training the next generation of hoteliers. It is hoped that the 2,000 students educated here annually will go on to benefit Hong Kong’s hotel industry.” The credibility of the school, he says, will be measured by the reality of making the hotel commercially viable, with profits being invested into further education.
“To further facilitate research, three prototype guestrooms under the themes of design, innovation, and well-being have been built for experimentation of advanced concepts and creative ideas. A crucial learning experience, these prototypes could be where the guestroom of the future is conceived. This award validates our vision to create a commercially viable, and industry-leading, hotel that is admired by hospitality experts from the world.”
