MLxAC (pronounced “Melinda Looi and Amber Chia”, or “ML and AC”) is one of the most exciting fashion collaborations this Chinese New Year.
The MLxAC Chinese New Year collection promises something for any personality or lifestyle requirement, and is versatile enough to be worn all year round.
The MLxAC Chinese New Year collection promises something for any personality or lifestyle requirement, and is versatile enough to be worn all year round.

Jointly designed by accomplished Malaysian fashion designer Melinda Looi and top celebrity model Amber Chia, the collection, titled Yuan: The Beauty of Serendipity, was inspired by the Chinese concept of yuan, described as “the “binding force” that links two people together in any relationship”.

“People tend to associate Chinese New Year with wealth, health, and prosperity. It’s easy to forget that good fortune also refers to the abundance of wonderful people in our lives; hence this collection celebrates the beauty of friends and relationships,” said Melinda.

It was also yuan that brought Melinda and Amber together. The duo, who are now considered fashion industry veterans, have known each other since the early stages of their respective careers in year of 2000.

MLxAC goes beyond typical Chinese New Year offerings while still adhering to cultural traditions with combinations of bright, auspicious colours and a variety of fabrics and textures to represent the many faces and personalities of people that touch our lives.

From traditional and elegant qipao, youthful dresses with an Oriental touch, and roomy A-lined blouses to modern structured vest and pants suitable for the office, MLxAC promises something for any personality or lifestyle requirement. There is also a range of Oriental inspired polos available for men and women — perfect for couples on the hunt for complementing Chinese New Year attire, or pragmatists who prefer not to sacrifice comfort for style.

Melinda and Amber designed the collection with the lifestyle of modern day ladies in mind. “Today’s women are looking for pieces that can be worn with existing items in their wardrobes. For example, I have a Chinese jacket that I wear all the time for events. Because it is so versatile, I don’t just limit myself to wearing that jacket for Chinese New Year. This is the concept we had in mind when designing the MLxAC collection,” said Amber.

Further evidence of the magical yuan and how it brings people together — Zalora is the exclusive online partner for the MLxAC collection, which will be the first designer/celebrity Chinese New Year collection to be made available at the online retailer’s websites in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Brunei.

“We hope that everyone wearing our pieces will enjoy them as much as we loved designing the collection,” said Melinda and Amber.

Melinda Looi started her journey on a scholarship at the La Salle School of Fashion in Montreal, Canada. It was her graduation collection in 1995 that catapulted her into the spotlight, earning her the Malaysia Young Designer Award 1995 in Kuala Lumpur.

Melinda has also been involved in various stage productions in Malaysia, as well as the television and film industry in Canada. She has consistently proven her ability and creativity through many awards locally and internationally, especially the prestigious Designer of the Year Award, in 2004 and 2006 at the Malaysian International Fashion Awards, and once again in 2009 at the Mercedes Benz STYLO Fashion Awards.

Melinda’s latest accolades include the nomination for Fashion Designer of the Year at the 3DPS Awards 2013 in London, UK. She will also be presenting Malaysia at the World Fashion Awards and World Fashion Week to be held in Paris in 2014 as well as showcasing one of her couture creations as part of World Fashion Exhibition, at various international fashion weeks.

Today, Melinda Looi has three distinct brands to her name, which are: Melinda Looi Couture, Melinda Looi Pret-a-Porter, and MELL Basics, consisting of must-have basics made from certified Organic Cotton – the first in Malaysia.

Besides working on her own fashion labels, Melinda is also involved in numerous and very diverse collaborations reaching from charities and eco-friendly events to art projects, as well as collaborations with international brands and corporates such as L’Oreal , Levi’s, Nando’s, and many others.

POSCO E&C Wins $350M Cement Plant Project in East Timor

leave a comment »

– The largest private investment project in East Timor, the newly independent state
– Infrastructure and oil projects expected to be won thanks to the successful entry into the cement market
SEOUL, South Korea, Jan. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — POSCO E&C (Vice Chairman & CEO, Chung Dong-Hwa) announced on the 3rd of December that it won a cement plant project worth 350 million dollars, equivalent to approximately 370 billion won, from East Timor’s TL Cement (Timor-Leste Cement is a special purpose corporation wholly owned by BGC, the largest construction company in Western Australia).
The new project is to construct a cement plant with the annual capacity of 1.5 million tons in Baucau in northeastern East Timor. Construction is expected to take a total 34 months from the signing of the contract.
With regard to this, there was an LOA (Letter of Award) delivery ceremony in Perth, Western Australia, which was attended by the project owner TL Cement, BGC, POSCO E&C and others.
East Timor, which became a nation in its own right when it declared its independence from Indonesia in 2002, is a small country with a total population of only 1.1 million people. The East Timor government has sought in recent years to expand its infrastructure establishment project in accordance with Timor-Leste’s Strategic Development Plan 2011-2030.
As the largest private investment project of any large-scale industrial plant project being pushed ahead by the East Timor government, this project is the subject of great expectations from the government.
What played a crucial role in winning this project was, in addition to the active support of the East Timor government, the trust POSCO E&C had established while working together with BGC on various projects in Australia over the past 2 years.
POSCO E&C is planning to implement this project on an EPC basis (Engineering, Procurement and Construction), covering everything from planning to engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning.
POSCO E&C expects that it will be able to leverage an advantageous position in the market from its success in this project to win future infrastructure and oil development projects from the East Timor government, including for road, harbor, airport and desalination facility projects.

GUILFORD, Maine, Jan. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Puritan Medical Products, the largest manufacturer of single-use specimen collection devices, has announced two new Japanese patents for their revolutionary high-performance flocked swabs.
The patents for the HydraFlock® swab (No. 2012-522818) and PurFlock Ultra® swab (No. 2012-522817) are the ninth and tenth international patents Puritan has received. Puritan also has device and method patents in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia for their line of flocked swabs, with patents pending in China.
“As our high-performance devices and proprietary methods continue to distinguish Puritan in the industry, we’re expanding into a greater number of international markets,” said Timothy Templet, Puritan’s Executive Vice President of Global Sales. “Japan’s patent awards speak to our growing recognition as one of the most trusted manufacturers of single-use medical products worldwide.”
Puritan’s HydraFlock® and PurFlock Ultra® swabs represent a pioneering evolution in flocked swab manufacturing technology. They are the only swabs on the market with a unique three-dimensional microstructure design resulting from specially developed fibers and a proprietary flocking process.

HydraFlock® and PurFlock Ultra® swabs may be purchased individually, or as a part of Puritan’s viral or bacterial transport systems. HydraFlock® flocked swabs, combined with Puritan’s liquid amies bacterial transport systems, are uniquely engineered to provide superior performance and versatility in the collection and transport of clinically significant bacteria.
PurFlock Ultra® flocked swabs are used with Puritan’s UniTranz-RT™ universal transport medium systems for the collection, preservation, and transport of viruses, chlamydia, mycoplasma, and ureaplasma specimens at room temperature (RT) or long-term freezer storage. Both kits are compatible with standard and automated laboratory equipment.
