— First Club Now Open in Singapore; Hong Kong is Next

HASTINGS, Minn., Oct. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Anytime Fitness, the fastest-growing fitness club franchise in the world, continues its worldwide expansion – this time into Singapore. Nearly 2,300 Anytime Fitness clubs are now open in 16 countries on five continents worldwide. The first Anytime Fitness club in Asia opened in Japan in 2010. There are now nearly 30 Anytime Fitness clubs in Japan and more than 400 Anytime Fitness clubs outside of the United States.

“We believe that the Anytime Fitness concept is a perfect fit for consumers in Asia who are looking for a convenient, non-intimidating and value-oriented place to exercise,” said John Kersh, vice president of international development at Anytime Fitness. “Anytime Fitness also offers a unique and low-cost alternative for Asian entrepreneurs looking to enter this fast-growing industry.”

Anytime Fitness opened in Singapore October 6, with 200 members who joined during a “pre-sale” period. Several additional locations in Singapore are now in development, while the first location in Hong Kong is expected to open by the end of this year.

“I am so proud and grateful to be part of the continued growth of Anytime Fitness within Asia and to hear the roar of the Lion City in Singapore as it hosted the opening of its first Anytime Fitness,” said Maurice Levine, master franchisee for Singapore and Hong Kong. “It was a great honor to hold the scissors for the ribbon cutting ceremony. We vowed to our members that we will out-care our competition, create memorable membership experiences and live up to the Anytime Fitness vision of improving the self-esteem of the world, one member at a time.”

“Our members are real people looking for help to overcome barriers to a healthier lifestyle,” said Chuck Runyon, Anytime Fitness CEO and co-founder. “We know our business model will work in virtually any market, because our clubs provide personable service that helps our members achieve the results they’re seeking.”

Mr. Levine will lead the Anytime Fitness expansion team into other Asian markets in the coming years. The plan is to open about 100 gyms in both Singapore and Hong Kong.

Specific club locations include communities where the market for an Anytime Fitness club exists but where no health clubs are currently located. Similar to Anytime Fitness gyms in the U.S., the gyms in Singapore and Hong Kong will be approximately 4,000 square feet, feature a wide variety of cardio equipment and strength training machines, and accessible to members 24 hours a day.

Australia Invites the Youth Traveller to ‘Be Changed’

leave a comment »

SYDNEY /PRNewswire/ — Tourism Australia has released a short film entitled ‘Be Changed’ via YouTube aiming to inspire young international travellers and encourage them to embark on their own journey of discovery in Australia.
To view the multimedia assets associated with this release, please click:
‘Be Changed’ was created by Infinity Squared and features a poem that was written and voiced by Bravo Child after viewing a short film inspired by Tourism Australia’s recent ‘Best Jobs in the World’ competition.
Tourism Australia Managing Director Andrew McEvoy said its latest ‘Be Changed’ film aimed to amplify its ‘Best Jobs in the World’ campaign by demonstrating the transformational benefits of a young person’s working holiday in Australia.
“For the finalists, and certainly the winners, I think the ‘Best Jobs’ experience and the journey they’ve enjoyed along the way have been life changing. The spectacular imagery and Bravo Child’s beautiful words capture perfectly Australia’s power to change and will, I’m sure, inspire more young people around the world to follow in their wake and embark on their own unique journey of self-discovery,” Mr McEvoy.
The film director Rob Stanton-Cook said he wanted to create something authentic and unique with a human voice that was far removed from traditional tourism advertising.
“We aimed to replicate that unique sense of wonderment that one feels when travelling and exploring a new country. It’s that overwhelming sense of optimism and excitement (like anything could happen!) from the moment you step off a plane and are surrounded by new people, new culture, new sites and sounds,” Stanton-Cook said.
Poet Bravo Child was transported whilst watching the vision realising “destinations aren’t just inert postcards vistas; but vivacious playgrounds to engage with. Australia is a fertile bed of culture and adventure and once you get here, if you dare to really take it in, something shifts within you”.
Tourism Australia’s ‘Best Jobs in the World’ competition is part of a major international marketing push to promote tourism opportunities provided by Australia’s Working Holiday Maker (WHM) visa program.
Mr McEvoy said that the campaign was already delivering results, including a significant spike in international interest in and uptake of an Australian working holiday.

Singapore’s New Business Formation Data Shows Resilience, Reports Janus Corporate Solutions

leave a comment »

Janus Corporate Solutions released its third quarter report for 2013 providing statistical data and analysis of business formation trends in Singapore.

SINGAPORE, Oct. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The latest quarterly Singapore Business Formation Statistics Report released by Janus Corporate Solutions shows a total of 15,457 new business formations in Singapore during the third quarter of 2013. The figure represents an 8.45% increase from the prior year. This reconfirms the overall trend of continued growth from the past year even though the figures show a slight decline from the previous exceptionally robust quarter.

The report is available on Janus’s website at

The statistics published in the report show a largely stable breakdown with private limited companies continuing to take up majority of the business entity types at 8,809 formations, of which 84.48% were exempt private limited companies (EPC). The continued dominance of this entity type may be attributed to the tax incentives that are available to eligible EPCs.

For the first time, this quarterly report includes figures on the number of branch offices registered in Q3, which registered at a total of 55 formations. The addition of this entity type to the analysis reflects the rising number of foreign companies looking to expand their businesses to the region. With a strong reputation as the leading trade and investment hub in the region, Singapore continues to enjoy a high volume of new businesses engaged in wholesale trade and financial services. Similarly, the city-state’s strategic location, stable government, transparent economy and efficient infrastructures have instilled confidence in foreign investors and in turn saw an encouraging number of MNCs favouring Singapore as a base to set up regional presence.

Further analysis by Janus Corporate Solutions reveal that 66% of new businesses had only Singapore-based shareholders, proving the effectiveness of the Singapore government’s persistent efforts to promote local entrepreneurship through attractive schemes and grants.

“The steady growth in number of business formations despite the continued struggles of the global economy is a testament to Singapore’s economic strength,” said Ms. Jacqueline Low, Chief Operating Officer of Janus Corporate Solutions. She added that, “Looking at the recent statistics released by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the high year-on-year growth of 5.1% in the third quarter is indicative of the country’s positive economic outlook in spite of volatility in global markets.”

Political stability, pro-business policies, low tax rates, and efficient infrastructures are some of the key attributes highlighted by Ms. Low that have set Singapore apart from and ahead of other business hubs. In addition, she observed that, “The concerted efforts by the Singapore government to increase productivity and innovation amongst small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have cultivated a vibrant entrepreneurial environment.”

Airbus Calls on Aviation Industry to Set a New Standard for Long Haul Comfort

leave a comment »

LONDON/PRNewswire/ —
Airbus proposes 18 inch (45.72cm) seat width as the standard for future long haul economy air travel
Today Airbus reveals new research into the impact seat width makes to levels of passenger comfort on board long haul economy flights; calling on the aviation industry to set a minimum standard of 18 inches (45.72cm) in order to improve the future comfort of long haul air travel.
(Photo: )
(Photo: )
The groundbreaking research conducted by Harley Street medical practice The London Sleep Centre, using polysomnography* to record every standard physiological sleep measurement – including monitoring brainwaves, eye, abdominal, chest and hip leg movement – on a selection of passengers, revealed that a minimum seat width of 18 inches improved passenger sleep quality by 53% when compared to the 1950s 17 inch standard.
Dr Irshaad Ebrahim MBChB MRCPsych of The London Sleep Centre commented: “The difference was significant. All passengers experienced a deeper, less disturbed and longer night’s sleep in the 18 inch seat. They went from one sleep stage to the next as you would expect them to do under normal circumstances. Whilst in the narrower 17 inch seat the passengers were affected by numerous disturbances during sleep – which meant they rarely experienced deep restorative sleep. When it comes to flying long haul in economy, an inch makes a huge difference on passenger comfort.”
Air transport has changed significantly over the last 50 years. There are more passengers, flying further for longer distances. In the last five years alone the number of flights over 6,000 nautical miles (13+ hours flight time) has increased by 70% from 24 to 41 daily flights. In 1998 no flight over 7,000 nautical miles had ever taken place. In the next 15 years passenger traffic will double and by 2032, the world’s airlines will take delivery of more than 29,220 new passenger and freighter aircraft.
Kevin Keniston, Airbus’ Head of Passenger Comfort, comments: “If the aviation industry doesn’t take a stand right now then we risk jeopardising passenger comfort into 2045 and beyond – especially if you take into account aircraft delivery timetables combined with expected years in service. Which means another generation of passengers will be consigned to seats which are based on outdated standards.”
Airbus has always maintained a standard of 18 inch (45.72cm) minimum in its long haul economy cabins. However, other manufacturers are eroding passenger comfort standards by going back to narrower seat widths from the 1950s in order to remain competitive. Changing Body Mass Index (BMI) and perspectives on personal space have encouraged other industries, such as leisure and automotive, to re-think seat width. And recent research conducted into long haul economy passengers across international airports revealed that seat comfort is now the most important criteria when booking a long distance flight in economy, even over the schedule of the flight.
Kevin Keniston adds: “Our research reveals that not only does seat width make a dramatic impact on passenger comfort but there is now a growing cohort of discerning economy passengers who are not prepared to accept long haul 17 inch crusher seats and instead will choose airlines that offer better seat comfort, often turning to social media or specialist websites to determine true seat value. Thankfully passengers these days have a choice and they are choosing to put comfort first. We are encouraging them to be aware of the difference an inch makes in long haul economy.”
For more information on Future by Airbus go to #AirbusComfort
More on the research
*The full polysomnography recorded every standard physiological sleep measurement on a selection of passengers, including brainwaves, eye, abdominal, chest and hip leg movement. The study design followed established principles of clinical study – this was a cross-over study to assess the impact on sleep variables by two different seat sizes – 17 and 18 inches in a small sample of six healthy adults who had been previously screened for the presence of medical and sleep disorders. The cabin environment was structured to simulate as close as possible the true flight environment from the start including lighting to replicate sunset and sunrise, aircraft take-off and background sounds, in-flight entertainment and catering. (October 2013)
All participants in the study were of average BMI with no record of health or sleep issues and were kept blind to the purpose of the study. Each completed a series of nights sleep in flight simulations re-creating long haul economy passenger experience, all variables were kept constant apart from the width of the seat which changed between 17 and 18 inches.
Objective (Scientific Data) – Improvement in Sleep Quality variables by up to 53%
The time it took to fall asleep (also called Sleep Onset Latency) showed an improvement of 14.7% (6 minutes) on the 18 inch seat;
The number of awakenings after falling asleep (Wake After Sleep Onset – WASO) showed an average reduction of 28 minutes on the 18 inch seat
Arousal Index – the most sensitive measure of SQ – measures number and frequency of disturbances to the brain waves during the course of the night – showed an average 53% improvement on the 18″ seat
