Eversheds Opens Seventh Middle East Office in Kurdistan Region

leave a comment »

Global law firm Eversheds has announced today an expanse of its Middle East operations with the opening of a second office in Iraq, located in Erbil, Kurdistan Region.

LONDON, Oct. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The opening of the Erbil office will mark the opening of Eversheds’ seventh office in the Middle East. The firm already has a strong foothold across the region with existing offices located in Amman (Jordan), Abu Dhabi and Dubai (the United Arab Emirates), Baghdad (Iraq), Doha (Qatar), and Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).

The decision to open in Erbil follows a real demand from Eversheds clients, as the Kurdistan Region becomes an increasingly important hub for international business. In the first half of 2012 alone, the Kurdistan Region drew in $3.4 billion worth of foreign investment. Since the region’s Investment Law was passed in 2006, the Kurdistan Region has attracted $21 billion in foreign and domestic private sector investment, $12.5 of which has gone to Erbil.

The new Erbil office will operate in association with highly experienced local lawyers.

Nasser Ali Khasawneh, Managing Partner Middle East, comments:

“Eversheds is the only global law firm to have offices in both Baghdad and Erbil; a real testament to the firm’s investment in the Middle East. As a client centred law firm, we are keen to be able to service the demands of our clients wherever in the world they want to do business. The opening of an office in Kurdistan is a real response to client demand as we continue to set precedents across the globe.”

Tawfiq Tabbaa, managing partner of the firms Iraq practice, comments:

“Our operations in this region have seen exponential growth over the last 12 months with many of our major global multinational clients looking to move into this emerging market. Opening an office in Erbil, will allow us to deliver high quality services on the ground to the large number of major global companies looking to invest in the region.”

S. Korean Netizens Seek to Change English Name for ‘Palman Daejanggyeong’

leave a comment »

SEOUL, South Korea, Oct. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — A group of South Korean netizens are campaigning to change the official English name for a Korean collection of Buddhist texts carved on more than 80,000 wooden blocks.

Tripitaka Koreana, or Palman Daejanggyeong in Korean, is considered the most comprehensive set of Buddhist scriptures found to date. The Haein Temple, where the texts are kept in Hapcheon, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The netizens filed a petition on the “Agora” bulletin board of the local Internet portal Daum with the Cultural Heritage Administration on Monday, demanding the English name of the item be changed to “Goryeo Daejanggyeong” or “Palman Daejanggyeong” as Koreans call it. The petition has so far gathered more than 100 signatures since it was issued on Monday.

They argued that the current name undervalues the Korean collection that is a far more complete and comprehensive set of Buddhist texts than India’s Tripitaka, a Sanskrit word meaning “three baskets.”

Tripitaka is the traditional term used by Buddhist traditions to describe three main categories of teachings — the Sutra, the sermons of the Buddha; the Vinaya, the precepts and rules of monastic discipline; and the Abhidharma, commentaries and explications of the teachings.

The move comes after a similar opinion was raised during an international symposium held in Seoul earlier this month as part of the 2013 Tripitaka Koreana Festival. The 45-day festival opened in Hapcheon, 354 kilometers south of Seoul, to increase the world’s awareness of the Korean cultural property.

The Korean netizens also noted that the name is a rare exception from UNESCO’s tradition of using names being used by indigenous people on its world heritage lists.

The Haein Temple; the government of South Gyeongsang Province, where the temple is situated; and the organizing committee of the Tripitaka Koreana Festival said they will consider formally requesting for a name change with UNESCO through the central government if the online petition gathers a large number of proponents.

Standard Chartered Bank offsets record CO2 emissions in 2012 and signs up to DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral serviceuntil 2016

SINGAPORE, Oct. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, offset over 1,900 tonnes of CO2 emissions for Standard Chartered Bank in 2012. The bank, which was the first global financial services company to deploy DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral service across its network back in 2011, has renewed its contract with DHL for a further 3 years.

DHL commits to its GoGreen efforts

Standard Chartered Bank uses the carbon neutral service DHL GOGREEN in 21 countries that together represent over 90 percent of the bank’s total international shipments across its network. Carbonemissions from the bank’s courier shipments are offset by an environmental protection investment project. DHL’s carbon management program invests in projects around the world such as a biomass power plant in India and Brazil, and a wind farm in China.

Jerry Hsu, CEO, DHL Express Asia Pacific: “DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral Service has become a positive asset for Standard Chartered Bank which pioneered its adoption in theinternational financial service sector. As the world’s leading logistics company, DHL has a responsibility to address the environmental challenge and help our global customers achieve their sustainability objectives. Multinational customers need scalable programs and DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral service has proved itself to be an innovative sustainable solution that can be rolled out to all business units across a complex international network to meet the global needs of customers such as Standard Chartered Bank.”

Standard Chartered Bank, the first bank to adopt DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral service globally, has renewed its worldwide contract until 2016. Its courier shipments are carbon neutral in major markets such as mainland China, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, UK, US and many more.

DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral service is annually verified by an independent certifying body — the Swiss-based Societe Generale de Surveillance, a United Nations independent auditor, to ensure accountability and transparency. Customers receive certification from DHL stating the total amount of CO2 offset on their behalf during the year. Customers can choose to send all or a selection of their international shipments using the DHLGOGREEN Carbon Neutral service. For a surcharge, DHL will offset the carbon emissions for international air express shipments.

DHL Express’ internal GoGreen programs have made it the industry leader in terms of sustainable logistics and the group has achieved outstanding improvements in carbon efficiency in Asia Pacific for four consecutive years. Last year, it managed an improvement of 7.4 percent despite a 15 percent growth in business. In total, Deutsche Post DHL, parent company of DHL Express, has now achieved a 16 percent improvement in its carbon efficiency since the launch of the GoGreen program in 2008 and is over halfway to meeting its target of a 30 per cent CO2-efficiency improvement (benchmarked to 2007 levels) by 2020.[1] The improvements are largely due to efficient ground operations, investments in energy efficient buildings and air fleet modernization, and employee dedication to growing a sustainable business.

DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral service was launched in 2008 to offer companies a more environmentally-responsible shipping option by calculating carbon emissions generated by transporting each shipment point to point. Emissions are offset by reinvesting in certified carbon management programs such as alternative vehicle fuel technology and reforestation projects. In 2012, more than 2.4 billion GOGREEN shipments were sent and about 180,000 tons of CO2were offset for customers — this is about 30 percent more than 2011 and over three times as much as 2009, when the total was 704 million shipments.

[1] Reduction is for the Group’s own operations and those of its transportation subcontractors, compared to 2007 levels

DHL Crowned Global Express Provider of the Year

leave a comment »

  • Subsidiary Blue Dart wins Regional Express Provider of the Year
  • Payload Asia awards DHL with highest accolade for second consecutive year & Blue Dart for the first time

SINGAPORE, Oct. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — DHL Express, the world’s leading cross-border express services provider, has been named Global Express Provider of the Year for the second year in row by Payload Asia magazine. Its subsidiary Blue Dart scooped the title of Regional Express Provider of the Year. DHL was voted top by Payload Asia readers from a shortlist compiled by a panel of experts for its customer growth, development strategy, operational performance, customer service and product innovations, and overall growth for the year 2012.

Jerry Hsu, CEO, DHL Express Asia Pacific, says, “To win this award for the second time is a double honor because, as well as recognizing that DHL’s products provide customers with added value to their business, it shows that we consistently deliver exceptional services year after year. Over the past year, DHL has made significant investments in facilities and fleets including the launch of the North Asia Hub in Shanghai and an ‘around the world’ flight. Our revenues in 2012 increased by almost 16% (Note 1) to EUR4.3 billion with customers sending over 11% more Time Definite International shipments than in 2011. As a result, we extended our position as Asia leader with a market share of 40%. The region now generates a third of our global revenue.”

Payload Asia’s Global Express Provider of the Year award evaluates a number of criteria including customer growth, development strategy, operational performance, customer service and product innovations. DHL’s award win demonstrates that continued investments for enhanced customer benefits such as faster and broader access to international markets, customized logistics solutions and commitment to sustainability make DHL their preferred logistics partner and a facilitator of trade. DHL serves 42 countries and territories in the region.

Blue Dart pioneered express services in India over 30 years ago and continues to set the benchmark for logistics services including products, technology, network and alliances that now cover the whole continent. Blue Dart is the clear market leader in air express with almost half of the market (Note 2), and business is growing in both value and volume. It has a 13% market share of the competitive organized ground segment and 49% of the organized air express segment. Recently, Blue Dart launched Critical Express for mission critical shipments and other technological and automation initiatives such as OTM (On-The-Move) Handheld Scanners, Smart Truck – an ‘intelligent’ pickup and delivery vehicle and MPOS (Mobile Point of Sales) a mechanism that uses mobile device based GPRS connectivity to facilitate debit/credit card payments for Cash on Delivery shipments.

~Growth, Innovation and Leadership APAC 2013: The Journey to Visionary Innovation~

SINGAPORE, Oct. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Frost & Sullivan’s flagship community of visionaries, innovators and leaders, GIL Global, held its 2013 Asia Pacific congress on 17 October 2013 at the St. Regis Hotel, Singapore. This year’s annual gathering focused largely on how CEOs and their management teams can uncover growth opportunities for the present and future by learning how to leverage innovation as a resource to address global challenges.

Through the continuous flow of new ideas and fresh perspectives amidst a culture of learning, sharing and engagement, participants were inspired to make a difference as they gained exposure to proven best-practices, tools and strategies

Mr. Manoj Menon, Partner & Managing Director for Asia Pacific Frost & Sullivan presented his keynote address on The Journey to Visionary Innovation – Disrupt, Collapse & Transform. Mr. Menon discussed the new trends that are creating widespread disruption, collapsing industries, and transforming spaces to give context to the opportunities ahead for growth.

“Unlike any other, the GIL experience is unique because it embodies the best of what is necessary – innovation, to progress in an ever changing business landscape fraught with global challenges,” said Mr. Menon.

Participants also had the opportunity to listen in on an innovative panel discussion that followed in which top CEOs shared their views on how these issues will affect companies, markets and industries in Singapore. Panellists include Tay Woon Teck, Managing Director, Asia Pacific, RSM Ethos, Pang Hee Hon, CEO, Keppel T&T and Saw Phaik Hwa, Group CEO, Auric Pacific Group Limited.

Following this, Mr. Kavan Mukhtyar, Partner for Frost & Sullivan spoke on the new game changers to help companies thrive in emerging markets. In his presentation, Mr. Mukhtyar provided a unique perspective on emerging markets and how they are helping the transition with the right positioning for the “game changing” future.

“Geographic expansion is one of the most important growth processes. Corporations are holding on to cash and with uncertain economic times, all roads lead to emerging markets. At the same time, a significant shift in the competitiveness of countries in the globalisation game is occurring,” says Mr. Mukhtyar.

This year’s congress also featured a segment where thought leaders shared valuable insights and industry outlook in key areas such as Automotive, Healthcare and ICT, namely Future of the Car, Connected and Preventive Healthcare; and The Internet of Things and ICT-Driven Industry Transformation.

This year’s GIL 2013: Asia Pacific concluded with GIL BYTES from visionaries, innovators and leaders where they shared Golden Nuggets of Ideas, Insights and Inspirations.
