The Philippine Genome Center Opens its DNA Sequencing Core Facility with a genetic analysis workflow system by Life Technologies

SINGAPORE, Oct. 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Life Technologies Corporation today announced that the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) has launched its DNA Sequencing Core Facility equipped with a genetic analysis workflow system by Life Technologies, including the 3730xl DNA Analyzer, Ion PGM™ and Ion Proton™ Systems for sequencing genes to genomes, Ion AmpliSeq™ Gene Panels and a 7500 Fast Real-Time PCR System and auxiliary products.

PGC’s state-of-the-art facility, which is located on the University of the Philippines (UP), Diliman campus, will use the entire product line to provide DNA sequencing and bioinformatics services to clients, as well as pursue research in human health and agriculture. The PGC has already started on a project to improve sugar cane varieties by enabling farmers to genetically differentiate plants of interest against others, and another project to introduce a new variety of sugar cane. The PGC is also working to re-populate the country’s dwindling coconut tree population by identifying genetic markers for the best coconuts that will fit the countries’ environment and needs.

CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct. 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Life Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: LIFE) today announced that its GlobalFiler™ Express Kit has been approved by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation for use by laboratories generating DNA profiles for inclusion in the National DNA Index System (NDIS) CODIS Database. NDIS manages the Federal CODIS forensic DNA database, which facilitates the electronic comparison and exchange of DNA profiles between participating local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and forensic laboratories.

The GlobalFiler™ Express Kit is the first NDIS approved, fully validated 6-dye system, which can be utilized for the rapid analysis of forensic DNA samples, delivering sample-to-answer in two hours. Introduced in the fall of 2012, the GlobalFiler™ Express Kit provides the ability to increase the number of genetic markers obtained from forensic samples by more than 30 percent to 24, with a processing time that’s five times faster than other solutions currently on the market.

Renault-Nissan Alliance Continues Progress in Closing the Global Gender Gap

DEAUVILLE, France, Oct. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The Renault-Nissan Alliance continues to make progress in closing the gender gap, and in the past year the organization has particularly accelerated recruitment and advancement of women in key growth markets.

Russia and Brazil are among Renault-Nissan’s most successful regions for female recruitment and advancement into management positions. In Russia, Renault’s third-largest market, women account for 19% of the workforce and 25% of managers. In 2013, 40% of all new Renault recruits in Russia were women, up from 35% in the previous year.

At Nissan, women account for 15% of the workforce in Russia and 27.7% of managers, one of the highest ratios within the company.

Brazil is another key growth market, where rapid hiring has helped increase the ranks of women managers at Nissan. Nissan has almost tripled the number of female managers in Brazil in just one year. Women now represent nearly 20% of all Nissan Brazil managers. Thanks in part to Brazil’s success, the number of women managers has surged 70% in the last five years throughout Nissan’s operations in the Americas.

“Because of the faster pace of growth and demand for talent, emerging markets represent a historic opportunity to close the global gender gap,” said Renault-Nissan Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn. “But make no mistake: Closing the gender gap is our objective worldwide, including in our home markets.”

Globally, Renault remains a leader in the industry in terms of women at the senior executive management level. Two out of its ten-member executive committee are women. Renault now has similar representation of women at all levels of the company. Women comprise 17.4% of Renault’s global headcount, 17% of managerial positions and 16% of Renault’s key 150 executive positions globally.

International Institute of Global Resilience (IIGR) Launches D.C. Course as part of Kumamoto University’s HIGO Program

WASHINGTON, Oct.15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The International Institute of Global Resilience (IIGR), a non profit organization dedicated to improving emergency management worldwide through research and education, today announced it has partnered with Kumamoto University’s Health and Life Science: Interdisciplinary and Glocal Oriented (HIGO) program.

Ten students from Japan, Nigeria and Bangladesh were selected for the intensive five day course, hosted by IIGR in Washington D.C. Students were presented with lectures from emergency management experts on topics including incident management, bioterrorism, risk communication and medical response to disaster. Visiting various sites in the D.C. area, students also learned about career opportunities and gained practical industry knowledge in areas like the U.S. patent system and U.S. and Japanese healthcare systems.
