DHL Kicks Off Global Volunteer Day 2013

leave a comment »

SINGAPORE, Sept. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — DHL, part of Deutsche Post DHL, the world’s leading postal and logistics group, today kicked off its annual Global Volunteer Day (GVD) 2013 celebrations. Over the next 10 days, DHL employees across Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, along with their business partners and customers, will volunteer in various community programs across these regions. In 2012, DHL’s global employee volunteer program saw over 62,000 volunteers in about 120 countries participate in more than 1,000 programs which benefitted local communities directly.

DHL also announced that GVD, traditionally an annual week-long initiative held in September, has now been extended to become a year-long program in an effort to further boost participation in volunteerism within the communities the company operates in. With some 285,000 employees, and operations in over 220 countries and territories, the company’s active support for employee volunteerism is part of its efforts to make a significant impact across the globe.

“We are committed to giving back to the communities that have helped us grow for more than 40 years. Our business is integrated into the local community — our customers, employees and partners are often residents of the areas in which we operate,” said Jerry Hsu, Chief Executive Officer, DHL Express Asia Pacific. “By transitioning to a year-long program, the DHL Global Volunteer initiative will have a very real impact on the local communities that we operate in.”

“What began as a modest initiative over five years ago will now expand to become an on-going effort. This reflects the company’s culture that stems directly from our mission as a company; to help people realize their full potential, in everything they do,” said Kelvin Leung, Chief Executive Officer, Asia Pacific, DHL Global Forwarding.

Paul Graham, CEO, DHL Supply Chain Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, said, “Over the years, we’ve seen growing enthusiasm from our employees around Global Volunteer Day. Our employees believe strongly that we must continue to focus on both the sustainability of our business and the world we live in. It just gives us all a great feeling to give back to the communities that have supported our growth. Frankly, that is what the DHL spirit is all about.”

Introduced in Asia Pacific in 2008, Global Volunteer Day has expanded into the Americas, Middle East, Africa and Europe over the years, and continues to build on its success by involving more employees and community projects. As a sustained program, local country teams organize and participate in recurring activities with beneficiaries and/or partner organizations that deliver significant sustainable impact. These programs deliver to the company’s three Corporate Responsibility programs — GoGreen (protecting the environment), GoHelp (delivering help) and GoTeach (championing education).

In addition, Deutsche Post DHL supports the voluntary engagement of its employees via the “Living Responsibility Fund”. Twice a year, employees can apply for financial support for their projects in the following year. The amount of support granted depends on the time the employee devotes to the project. In 2012, the company supported 104 projects involving more than 9,000 employees in 48 countries who volunteered 61,000 hours of their time to local projects. Together with the three Corporate Responsibility programs, employee volunteerism has been an integral part of the Corporate Responsibility Strategy under the motto “Living Responsibility”.

leave a comment »

SUWON, South Korea /PRNewswire/ — The general meeting of the world’s first eco-mobility festival began on Monday in the city of Suwon, providing international experts with an opportunity to discuss ways of promoting sustainable transport, organizers said.
Suwon-ecomobility festival
Suwon-ecomobility festival
The EcoMobility World Festival 2013, dedicated to sustainable development, kicked off Sunday and will run until Sept. 30. The festival is being held in Suwon, 30 kilometers south of Seoul.
The event, attended by hundreds of delegates from 98 cities of 41 countries, aims to share knowledge about developments in the latest eco-friendly mobile vehicles and technologies from around the world. It also hopes to foster the exchange of opinions on how to promote sustainable transport.
The festival was co-organized by the Suwon City Government, ICLEI, the international association of local government dedicated to sustainable development and the United Nations Human Settlements Program.
Eco-mobility is an integrated form of environmentally sustainable mobility that combines the use of non-motorized means of transport with the use of public transport and eco-friendly mobile vehicles to allow people to move around in their local environments without utilizing private motor vehicles.
“Now is the time to acknowledge the bare fact that we will run out of fossil fuels in 20 to 30 years, and to take action,” Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young said in his keynote speech during the plenary session of the three-day congress.
Yeom vowed to strive for making Suwon an example of a metropolis with sustainable transport, and pointed to his city’s track record in pursuing the eco-friendly transportation system.
The congress brought together some 300 experts from around the world, including ICLEI’s Vice President Mary Jane Ortega, its Deputy Secretary-General Monika Zimmermann, and the event’s creative director Konrad Otto-Zimmermann.
During the plenary session, Gil Penalosa, Executive Director from Toronto, made a speech about the so-called 8-80 Cities campaign. The campaign’s goal is to create a city that is good for both 8-year-olds and 80-year-olds by promoting eco-friendly transport.
Heiner Monheim, a professor from Germany’s University of Trier, also spoke about the sustainable system.
Participants then began parallel sessions to discuss diverse issues, such as the role of eco-mobility, its marketing and management, according to organizers.
After more rounds of sessions on the matter, the congress will end on Wednesday.
During the festival period, residents in the neighborhood of the festival venue will live with non-motorized means of transport and present a message about what the future of urban cities could be like when fossil fuels dry up, the organizers said. The venue is near Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130904/637818 )

“Xperia Z1 represents a significant milestone for Sony in our continued efforts to deliver unforgettable experiences to our consumers,” said Kunimasa Suzuki, President and CEO, Sony Mobile Communications. “Not only by bringing the power of Sony to the smartphone and through close collaboration with our partners but by setting a new standard in premium smartphones.”

The world’s leading camera in a smartphone

The elegant, 5″ Xperia Z1 is the latest addition to Sony’s premium Z series of products and brings Sony’s proven world-class technologies to the smartphone like never before – including the very best of Sony’s camera expertise. Xperia Z1 features Sony’s award-winning “G Lens” with a 27mm wide angle and bright F2.0 aperture, custom made large 1/2.3-type CMOS image sensor Exmor RS for mobile with 20.7MP and a BIONZ for mobile image processing engine. The combination of these technologies delivers the same level of quality and performance as a conventional compact digital camera in a slim, waterproof smartphone. Indeed, independent testing has confirmed that Xperia Z1 provides the best overall image quality of all leading smartphones[1]. This means that Xperia Z1 captures beautiful, sharp and bright images even in lowlight conditions. High shutter speeds and 3x clear image zoom also prevents shots from being blurred while enabling them to be captured at distance.

Innovative suite of Xperia Camera Applications

Xperia Z1 takes the conventional camera experience to a whole new level by including an innovative set of Xperia Camera Applications that deliver new experiences. Applications at launch include:

  • Social live: Broadcast precious moments live from Xperia Z1 to Facebook and get your friends’ comments right on your screen.
  • Info-eye™: Innovative visual search function that provides related information on landmarks and on items such as books or wine simply by capturing them with the camera.
  • Timeshift burst: Capture the perfect shot every time – Xperia Z1 takes 61 images in 2 seconds – a second before and after pressing the shutter – so you can scroll back and forth to find the perfect image.
  • AR effect: Overlay a selection of fun, customizable animations to create pictures using Sony’s SmartAR™ augmented reality technology.

This experience is supported by a robust ecosystem of established and up-and-coming developer partnerships who are working to create Xperia Camera Applications. Many more apps will be available through the Sony Select recommendation store after launch.

Beautiful design with high power and performance

Xperia Z1 also includes all of the features consumers have come to expect of a Sony smartphone. Its stunning looks combine Sony’s acclaimed OmniBalance design with premium materials and precision engineering in a slim waterproof and dust resistant smartphone (IP55 & IP58). A solid one-piece aluminium frame with tempered glass on the front and back ensures beauty and durability as well as a consistent viewing experience from any angle.

Xperia Z1 features the fully integrated Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 processor with 2.2 GHz quad-core CPU and 4G LTE to provide a seamless connected entertainment experience, industry leading battery performance and amazing speed. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor features the latest GPU and dual ISP for incredible graphics, 3D games and videos. The Xperia Z1 also includes a 3000 mAh battery for a high battery performance. Sony’s Battery STAMINA Mode automatically turns off functions to save power when you don’t need them and restarts them when you do.

Incredible out of the box entertainment with Sony’s media applications and technologies

Xperia Z1 integrates PlayMemories Online[2], a cloud-based image and video service that is integrated into the Album application. A new ‘All Sync’ feature enables users to instantly auto-upload all of their photos without storage limitation[3].

Sony’s “WALKMAN” and Movies applications are also included and provide access to more than 22 million songs on the “WALKMAN” app through Music Unlimited and more than 150K movies and TV series on the Movies app through Video Unlimited[2] from Sony Entertainment Network.

Thanks to the inclusion of Sony’s BRAVIA TV technology, Xperia Z1 features Sony’s unique TRILUMINOS Display for mobile, creating a wider palette of rich natural colours for an immersive viewing experience. It also includes X-Reality for mobile – Sony’s intelligent super resolution technology which analyzes each image and optimizes the quality to deliver super sharp videos. Xperia Z1 also brings Sony’s audio expertise to play with Sony’s ClearAudio+ which automatically optimizes the audio experience without the need to adjust individual settings.

Xperia Z1 comes with an incredible entertainment offer that includes five great movies plus an exclusive movie access pass to the digital release of Sony Pictures’ summer blockbuster Elysium as well as a two month free trial of Sony’s Music Unlimited[4] streaming service plus much more.

Xperia Z1 also features a new application called TrackID™ TV[5] that enhances your TV-viewing experience. It lets users search, share and explore information from broadcasted TV shows such as cast & crew, biographies, filmography or show related Tweets.

Unrivalled ecosystem of companion products and smart accessories

Xperia Z1 is supported by an ecosystem of innovative companion products and accessories. – New community-based site helps students of all ages find, rate and share the best in online education and eLearning resources

SEATTLE, Sept. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — LearnBIG announced today the launch of LearnBIG.com, a new site that will change the way learners of all ages will easily access thousands of online educational resources in one central location. LearnBIG joins together technology and community to improve educational access regardless of income, age or geographic location.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130904/AQ73464LOGO)

While a large and growing number of digital educational resources are available, many of which are free, linking to the course or tool that is right for the learner has been a huge hurdle in accessing these eLearning resources. LearnBIG allows an easy way to search and filter content by subject, level, platform and popularity available for Pre-K, K-12, college and lifelong learners. And because the site is community-reviewed by parents, teachers and learners, users can easily find education resources that match their learning style.

“eLearning is transforming education but finding the best available content has proven to be very challenging,” said Victor Alhadeff, CEO of LearnBIG and former Egghead Software CEO. “LearnBIG’s breadth, depth, organization and user experience creates a dramatically different environment for people to not only find specific content, but also have the power of choice to find exactly what they need. The potential for significant social change by bringing access to the best in education to all people is profound.”

LearnBIG will feature a large online community of parents, students and teachers who share their experiences about each resource. Each LearnBIG user can review and create collections based on their specific learning needs. This will allow the most popular resources on the site to rise to the surface so other users can easily access them.

Anyone, including parents getting ready for their kids going back to school, can now easily locate online education tools from a variety of media whether it’s a game on an iPad, an app on their phone or an instructional video. This allows parents to access community-reviewed resources to help their children get the skills they need. Equally powerful is the opportunity to find tools others of the same age group, learning style and grade are using.

A core feature is LearnBIG’s Career Paths, which are ideal for high school and college students or career changers to help guide them towards achieving their goals. This provides a set of skills that anyone can discover and provides a roadmap to become proficient in a selected area of expertise.

LearnBIG is also a tool for teachers, who will now be able to easily provide their students with enrichment materials for after-school learning to help students gain and solidify skills. Resources can be sorted by Common Core State Standards to ensure the resources teachers are utilizing for students matches what they are learning in class.

Kaspersky Lab Announces NetTraveler is Back with New Tricks

leave a comment »

SINGAPORE, Sept. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Kaspersky Lab researchers today announced a new attack vector of NetTraveler (also known as ‘Travnet’ or “Netfile”), an advanced persistent threat that has already infected hundreds of high profile victims in more than 40 countries. Known targets of NetTraveler include Tibetan/Uyghur activists, oil industry companies, scientific research centers and institutes, universities, private companies, governments and governmental institutions, embassies and military contractors.

Immediately after the public exposure of the NetTraveler operations in June, 2013, the attackers shut down all known command and control systems and moved them to new servers in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. They also continued the attacks unhindered, just like the current case shows.

Over the last few days, several spear-phishing e-mails were sent to multiple Uyghur activists. The Java exploit used to distribute this new variant of the Red Star APT has a higher success rate than the previously used Office exploits, having been patched by Oracle in June 2013.

Kaspersky Lab’s Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT) experts predict that other recent exploits could be integrated and used against the group’s targets and offer recommendations on how to stay safe from such attacks:

Update Java to the most recent version or, if users don’t use Java, uninstall it.
Update Microsoft Windows and Office to the latest versions.
Update all other third party software, such as Adobe Reader.
Use a secure browser such as Google Chrome, which has a faster development and patching cycle than Windows’ default Internet Explorer.
Be wary of clicking on links and opening attachments from unknown persons.

“So far, we haven’t observed the use of zero-day vulnerabilities with the NetTraveler group. To defend against those, although patches don’t help, but technologies such as Automatic Exploit Prevention and Default Deny can be quite effective fighting advanced persistent threats,” says Costin Raiu, Director of Global Research & Analysis Team at Kaspersky Lab.
