DHL Increases CO2 Efficiency for 4th Consecutive Year in Asia Pacific

leave a comment »

New vehicles and greener facilities contribute to year-on-year improvement of 7.4 per cent (Note 1) with top performing countries Thailand and Australia

SINGAPORE, July 24, 2013/PRNewswire/ — DHL Express, the world’s leading cross-border express services provider, has improved its carbon efficiency year-on-year in Asia Pacific for the 4th consecutive year with an improvement of 7.4% despite a significant volume rise. Top country performers include Thailand, Australia, Japan, Singapore, and Bangladesh. In total, Deutsche Post DHL, parent company of DHL, has now achieved a 16 percent improvement in its carbon efficiency since the launch of the GoGreen program in 2008 and is over halfway to meeting its target of a 30% CO2-efficiency improvement by 2020. (Note 2)

Jerry Hsu, CEO, DHL Express Asia Pacific, said: “Demand for DHL Express services has increased in Asia Pacific. Last year, we saw a double-digit growth in volume, yet overall we managed to achieve a 7.4% year-on-year improvement in carbon efficiency. Despite opening new and bigger facilities to serve growing customer demand — such as the North Asia Hub in Shanghai — our increasingly efficient ground operations, energy efficient buildings have enabled us to lower overall carbon emissions for the fourth year in a row, showing our absolute dedication to growing a sustainable business.”

Fleet modernization such as the introduction of new and more fuel efficient vehicles in ground transportation was a major contributor to improved CO2 efficiency in the region. Over 500 vehicles in Asia Pacific were replaced with new units that feature innovative systems like GPS and telematics to help monitor, measure, analyze and improve the carbon efficient behavior of drivers, in addition to continued effort on route optimization and asset utilization. Most of the vehicles are Euro IV and V emission standards, which are defined by the European Commission as the acceptable limits for exhaust emissions for new light duty vehicles sold in European Union member states.

Thailand achieved an outstanding performance with a 36.2% year-on-year improvement in CO2 efficiency, followed by Australia at 22.7%. In Thailand, diesel vehicles were fitted with gasoline engines running on 100% CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). Australia’s older fleet was also upgraded with new and more fuel efficient vehicles meeting Euro V standards. Changes to ground facilities with improved energy utilization also played a big role in achieving CO2 improvements. In Australia, all of DHL’s facilities are currently certified as ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System), and staff is fully engaged with the environmental program initiating different activities around energy savings, paper reduction and waste recycling.

Among other top performers of CO2 efficiency improvement are Japan (18.6%), Singapore (17.9%), and Bangladesh (12.4%). DHL’s Central Asia Hub was the top hub with an 11.4% improvement in CO2 efficiency.

DHL Express Asia Pacific started the assessment of its carbon footprint from energy consumption in real estate and ground transport to measure and improve carbon efficiency through abatement programs. This program was first introduced by DHL Express in 2008 and now covers over 1,000 facilities in 27 markets across Asia-Pacific.

  1. Includes Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Scope 1 & 2 CO2 emissions on the ground, but excludes all aviation CO2 emissions.
  2. Reduction is for the Group’s own operations and those of its transportation subcontractors, compared to 2007 levels.

Southeast Asia Furniture & Interiors Import-Export Exhibition Moves to March 2014

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, July 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — UBM Malaysia announced today that the inaugural Southeast Asia Furniture & Interiors Import-Export Exhibition (SEAFIE) scheduled for 13-16 September in Kuala Lumpur has been moved to next year and will premiere at the 20th Anniversary Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) held 4-8 March at the Putra World Trade Centre and the MATRADE Exhibition and Convention Centre (MECC) Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Ms Karen Goi, General Manager, Furniture & Interiors of UBM Malaysia, said while SEAFIE has drawn very encouraging buyer interest with pre-registration from over 40 countries to-date, the decision to move back SEAFIE was due to the response from exhibitors to participate at this time of year does not meet UBM Malaysia’s benchmarks and standards.

“We see the demand is strong for mid-to-high end furniture and furnishings in ASEAN; but for now must also consider our responsibility to all of our customers both furniture manufactures and buyers. Still, we have chosen to continue to create a platform for buyers, architects and designers interested in the mid-to high end products by launching SEAFIE as a special feature at the 20th anniversary of MIFF next year. This move still gives exhibitors more value for their participation as well as more product selection for buyers. In many respects, SEAFIE’s movement to MIFF’s 20th Anniversary is demonstrative of our commitment to furthering the growth of the industry but at the same time considering the immediate needs of our long-time partners and community,” concludes Goi.

A specially designated SEAFIE Hall will be allocated to exhibitors from local and overseas furnishing companies at MIFF 2014 complete with a host of activities and events dedicated towards the mid-to-high-end furniture marketplace.

More information on MIFF 2014 and SEAFIE are available on and

The Intractable Studies Institute releases seven solutions for tornado, tsunami, flood, forest fire, floating oil-platform fire, labor and world peace

leave a comment »

PERALTA, New Mexico /PRNewswire/ — The Intractable Studies Institute released solutions for the tornado, tsunami, flood, forest fire, floating oil-platform fire, android-robot labor and world peace. These solutions will save lives and property. The mission of their Institute is to create and publish solutions initially for the top 50 of the most intractably difficult challenges known, this completes seven.
The importance of solutions are self-evident as the last decade has seen hundreds of thousands of deaths from these natural and man-made disasters and hundreds of billions of dollars in cost. The android-robot labor solution creates a symbiotic human-android labor pool, and has a side-effect of obsoleting pensions, retirement savings and Social Security since a robot is effectively all of these in the provided solution. The importance of world peace is self-evident.
Each solution is a single-page PDF file at the Institute web site, aka The solutions can be downloaded from their site via the slide show there and the Communications menu bar. All seven Communications are entirely free to the public.
The Director of the Institute had this to say about this release, “These seven solutions will lay the groundwork for a world where natural disasters are less tragic, people share their heavy work-load with robots, and world peace becomes inevitable.”
Their Institute thinks outside of the box of normal researchers to create highly innovative solutions to very difficult challenges. The Institute itself is outside the box of traditional research centers in that by design their mission is to publish theoretical solutions before they are tested, and those ‘Communications of the Institute’ are appropriately labeled theoretical. Regarding this model the Director had this to say,”The Institute prefers this model because it gets our solutions out the door faster to the public, researchers and other entities that want and need these solutions.”
Founded in 2013, the Intractable Studies Institute’s mission is to create solutions exclusively for intractably hard challenges. The Institute motto is “Think outside the box.” The company logo says it best: “When all else fails, come to the Institute.” (
