Renault-Nissan Confirms New Vehicles Specifically Tailored for Growth Markets

leave a comment »

CHENNAI, India, July 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ —

  • All-new vehicles from Renault-Nissan’s “Common Module Family” will reflect “cost-breakthrough” pricing in multiple body and powertrain configurations
  • Production will begin in Chennai in 2015 for the Indian market
  • Renault and Nissan continue to aggressively expand dealer network and product lineup in India

CEO and Chairman Carlos Ghosn confirmed today that the Renault-Nissan Alliance is developing all-new vehicles to meet the specific demands of new car buyers in the world’s fastest growing economies.

(Photo: )

The announcement marks the first all-new program developed from the ground up by Renault SAS and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., teams working side by side from inception. The program, internally named CMF-A, covers the most affordable category of cars in the Common Module Family, Renault-Nissan’s unique, modular system of vehicle architecture.

The CMF approach defines vehicles as five essential modules: the engine bay, cockpit, front underbody, rear underbody and electrical/electronic architecture. The compatible parts can then be assembled into hundreds of possible configurations, for maximum efficiency and brand differentiation.

Production of vehicles within the CMF-A scope will begin in 2015 at the Renault-Nissan Alliance plant in Chennai. Renault and Nissan will reveal additional details, including pricing details and product volume, closer to the start of production.

Like all CMF categories, CMF-A offers a high degree of flexibility. Significant body style and powertrain variations can be matched to specific customer needs and preferences in India and other high-growth markets.

“We are breaking new ground with CMF-A to meet and exceed the high standards of consumers in the world’s fastest growing economies – particularly people buying a new car for the first time,” Ghosn said at Renault Nissan Technology Business Centre, the Chennai-based engineering facility where development work on CMF-A began last year. “These influential consumers don’t want a decontented car originally intended for consumers in mature markets. They want and deserve a car that is modern, robust and stylish – at a price point that represents a ‘cost breakthrough’ for such a generous vehicle.”

Nespresso Builds on 10 Years of Success of Its AAA Sustainable Quality(TM) Program In Cooperation With The Rainforest Alliance, Announcing:

leave a comment »

LAUSANNE, Switzerland and PARIS/PRNewswire/ —
Expansion of AAA Program in Africa with TechnoServe
AAA Farmer Future Program with Fairtrade International and Colombian farmer cooperatives
Expansion of AAA Program and agro-forestry program with the Rainforest Alliance
Global leaders in sustainability and long-time brand ambassador George Clooney joined Nespresso, as part of the company’s first Sustainability Advisory Board, to announce major new initiatives in the areas of farmer welfare and environmental stewardship.
The Nespresso Sustainability Advisory Board (NSAB) is comprised of experts and thought leaders in the area of sustainability. It has been established to solicit views and provide insight and recommendations to enhance Nespresso’s long term sustainability strategy and to serve as a base for additional partnerships on new initiatives. The official formation of the board coincides with the 10th anniversary of the company’s AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program, a cornerstone of the company’s sustainability efforts.
For 10 years, Nespresso has worked with the Rainforest Alliance and other key partners on the AAA Program, a unique approach that combines a focus on quality and sustainability to produce benefits for farmers and their communities. The program is producing concrete results on the ground in coffee growing communities. A study performed by Colombian research institute CRECE, demonstrates significantly higher levels of environmental, economic and social performance for AAA farms versus non-AAA farms. The program is one part of the company’s overall approach to Creating Shared Value and establishes a strong model for collaborative partnerships to drive concrete impacts in sustainability.
“As we mark ten years of the AAA Program, I am proud to have the opportunity to work with these renowned leaders in environmental and social sustainability in order to strengthen our programs and develop new and impactful initiatives to create shared value for coffee farmers,” said Jean-Marc Duvoisin, CEO of Nestlé Nespresso. “While we have come a long way over the past ten years, we are driven by the need to continue to move forward. The insight and independent perspectives brought by these thought leaders will help advance our sustainability efforts and will ensure that we remain focused on initiatives that will have a positive overall impact on the environment and social aspects of our value chain.”
Significant new partnerships to drive sustainability for coffee farmers
Expansion of AAA Program in Africa with TechnoServe
At the inaugural NSAB meeting in Lausanne, Mr. Duvoisin was joined by George Clooney and TechnoServe President and CEO, Bruce McNamer to announce two major new initiatives in Africa: the expansion of the AAA Program in Ethiopia and Kenya and a program to re-establish coffee supply from South Sudan.
In Ethiopia and Kenya, Nespresso will expand the AAA Program to include more smallholder coffee farmers and will partner with local governments and TechnoServe to improve coffee sustainability at farm level. The company will also launch community development programs that address key socio-economic challenges in the coffee growing communities and support farmer welfare. The partners expect to double the amount of coffee sourced from the region to 10,000 tons by 2020 through the extension of the program to smallholder farmers. This significant expansion of the AAA Program will build upon the strong success of the program in Latin America and its recent expansion to India. Currently, over 56,000 farmers are part of the AAA Program and the company is sourcing approximately 80% of its coffee from AAA farms.
The South Sudan project, in cooperation with TechnoServe and George Clooney, will revive high quality coffee production in the country to contribute to economic development and create supply. It is expected that thousands of smallholder farmers will benefit from the initiative. As part of the program, Nespresso plans to be the first company to offer coffee from the country following its independence.
AAA Farmer Future Program with Fairtrade International and Colombian farmer cooperatives
Mr. Duvoisin also joined with Fairtrade International CEO Harriet Lamb and representatives of five Fairtrade certified cooperatives in Caldas, Colombia to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pilot the AAA Farmer Future Program. The program responds to the need of farmers to guard against the risks of price volatility and other factors contributing to instability in the sector. Specifically, the program aims to introduce social welfare provisions to benefit farmers and their families, including health and accident coverage and retirement planning. As part of the initiative, Nespresso will market coffee from the AAA farmer cooperatives in the region and certified Fairtrade.
Expansion of AAA Program and agro-forestry initiatives with the Rainforest Alliance
Nespresso also announced continued investment in bringing all its farmers into the AAA Program and increasing the number of farmers who obtain Rainforest Alliance certification, building on the strong results of the Program over the past 10 years. In addition, it announced an expansion of its agro-forestry program, in partnership with the Rainforest Alliance and Pur Projet, to optimise the carbon footprint of coffee farming. Nespresso has reduced its carbon footprint per cup by 20% since 2009. Coffee agriculture remains an area of opportunity to further optimise carbon impacts. The program will help farmers step up their investment in agro-forestry and will seek to create carbon credits and drive new revenue streams.
Board Member Perspectives
“As we mark 10 years of collaboration between Nespresso and the Rainforest Alliance, I am pleased to be a part of the Nespresso Sustainability Advisory Board,” said Tensie Whelan, President of the Rainforest Alliance. “The AAA Program, built together with the Rainforest Alliance and the Sustainable Agriculture Network, is one of the most rigorous and comprehensive programmes in the coffee industry, with increased farmer net income and significantly improved water quality, waste management and reforestation. We believe that the expansion of the coffee farming agro-forestry program that we are jointly developing with Nespresso, will build on the strong results demonstrated by the AAA Program and will be an important new approach to supporting farmer livelihoods, protecting the natural resources on which they depend and safeguarding the planet for all of us.”
“I am excited for the opportunity to bring together my role as an ambassador for Nespresso and an advocate for a better future for the people of South Sudan,” said George Clooney. “This program will help farmers and their families secure their future by building new sources of sustainable business in this region. It will provide much-needed income and security for thousands of farmers and their families living in coffee communities and has the potential to play an important role in helping to diversify the economic base in the country.”
“We are excited to be joining together with Nespresso to address the very real issues and risks that coffee farmers face on a daily basis,” said Harriet Lamb, President of Fairtrade International. “Farmers are exposed to many risks, including low productivity, price volatility and fluctuations in exchange rates. These factors can severely impact their livelihoods. This unique pilot project will seek to provide the security farmers need to provide for their families and invest in their future.”
Nespresso Sustainability Advisory Board Members
Joining Nespresso and Nestle representatives for the inaugural NSAB meeting were Peter Bakker, President World Business Council for Sustainable Development; George Clooney; Polly Courtice, Director of the University of Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership (CPSL); Luis Genaro Munoz, President Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC); Daniel Katz, Chairman and Founder of the Rainforest Alliance; Harriet Lamb, CEO Fairtrade International; Tristan Lecomte, Co-founder, Pur Projet; Julia Marton-Lefevre, CEO International Union for the Conservation of Nature; Bruce McNamer, President & CEO, TechnoServe; Lawrence Pratt, Director of the Latin American Center for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development (CLACDS) at INCAE Business School; Reza, National Geographic photographer, eyewitness, creator of the Soul of Coffee photo exhibition; Paul Rice, President & CEO, Fair Trade USA; Auret Van Heerden, President & CEO, Fair Labor Association; and Tensie Whelan, President of long-time Nespresso sustainability partner the Rainforest Alliance.

Average Packet-Per-Second and Attack Bandwidth Rates Rise 1,655 Percent and 925 Percent Respectively According to Prolexic’s Latest DDoS Attack Report

leave a comment »

HOLLYWOOD, Fla., July 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Prolexic Technologies, the global leader in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection services, today announced that the average packet-per-second (pps) rate reached 47.4 Mpps and the average bandwidth reached 49.24 Gbps based on data collected in Q2 2013 from DDoS attacks launched against its global client base. These metrics, representing increases of 1,655 percent and 925 percent respectively compared to Q2 2012, are just two of many findings contained in the company’s Quarterly Global DDoS Attack Report, which was published today.

“This quarter we logged increases for all major DDoS attack metrics, and some have been significant. DDoS attacks are getting bigger, stronger and longer,” said Stuart Scholly, president at Prolexic. “We believe this growth is being fueled by the increasing prevalence of compromised Joomla and WordPress web servers in increasingly large botnets.”

In Q1 2013, Prolexic recorded an average DDoS attack bandwidth of 48.25 Gbps, an all-time high since the company began issuing quarterly attack reports in Q3 2011. This second quarter, average bandwidth ticked even higher to 49.24 Gbps, representing a 2 percent increase over Q1 2013 and a 925 percent increase over Q2 2012. In addition, average packet-per-second volume reached 47.4 Mpps this quarter, a dramatic 46 percent increase over the 32.4 Mpps that was logged just last quarter. Compared to Q2 2012, the average packet-per-second rate has increased 1,655 percent.

After trending down in 2011 and part of 2012, average attack durations are increasing, rising from 17 hours in Q1 2012 and 34.5 hours in Q1 2013, to 38 hours this quarter.

“Attack durations are likely increasing because perpetrators are less concerned about detection and protecting their botnets,” said Scholly. “The widespread availability of compromised web servers makes it much easier for malicious actors to replenish, grow and redeploy botnets. Traditionally, botnets have been built from compromised clients. This requires malware distribution via PCs and virus infections, and takes considerable time and effort. Consequently, attackers wanted to protect their client-based botnets and were more fearful of detection, so we saw shorter attack durations.”

Summary highlights from Prolexic’s Q2 2013 Global DDoS Attack Report

Compared to Q2 2012

  • 33 percent increase in total number of DDoS attacks
  • 23 percent increase in total number of infrastructure (Layer 3 & 4) attacks
  • 79 percent increase in total number of application (Layer 7) attacks
  • 123 percent increase in attack duration: 38 hours vs. 17 hours
  • 925 percent increase in average bandwidth
  • 1,655 percent increase in average packet-per-second (pps) rate

Compared to Q1 2013

  • 20 percent increase in total number of DDoS attacks
  • 17 percent increase in total number of infrastructure (Layer 3 & 4) attacks
  • 28 percent increase in total number of application (Layer 7) attacks
  • 10 percent increase in attack duration: 38 hours vs. 34.50 hours
  • 2 percent increase in average bandwidth: 49.24 Gbps vs. 48.25 Gbps
  • 46 percent increase in average packet-per-second (pps) rate
  • China maintains its position as the main source country for DDoS attacks.

Analysis and emerging trends

As in previous quarters, attackers predominantly used infrastructure-directed attacks (Layer 3 and Layer 4), which accounted for 74.7 percent of all attacks, with application layer attacks making up the remainder. SYN floods were the attack type of choice, accounting for nearly one-third of all attacks mitigated by Prolexic’s Security Operations Center (SOC). This is the highest volume for any single attack type since Prolexic began publishing its Quarterly Global DDoS Attack Report. GET, ICMP and UDP floods were also frequently directed against Prolexic clients over the three-month period.

Compared to the same quarter one year ago, the total number of DDoS attacks increased 33.8 percent. In addition, the total number of infrastructure attacks increased 23.2 percent while the total number of application attacks (Layer 7) increased by 79.4 percent compared to one year ago. While the split between the total number of infrastructure attacks and application layer attacks was similar between the two quarters, both attack types increased when the two quarters were compared. Average attack durations have increased significantly, rising from 17 hours in Q2 2012 to reach 38 hours this quarter, an increase of 124 percent.

Compared to Q1 2013, the total number of attacks increased by 20 percent. This reflects a consistently high level of denial of service attack activity around the globe over the last six months. The total numbers of both infrastructure and application attacks increased over Q1 2013 (17.4 percent and 28.9 percent respectively). Average attack duration continued to tick upwards, rising from 34.5 hours last quarter to 38 hours in Q2 2013.

April was the most active month of the quarter for DDoS attacks, accounting for 39.7 percent of all attacks, followed by May (31.6 percent) and June (28.7 percent). This quarter, two weeks tied for the most active week of the quarter: April 8-14 and April 15-21. This high level of activity can be attributed to attacks against financial services clients and the ongoing use of the itsoknoproblembro toolkit.

Data for the Q2 2013 report has been gathered and analyzed by the Prolexic Security Engineering & Response Team (PLXsert). The group monitors malicious cyber threats globally and analyzes DDoS attacks using proprietary techniques and equipment. Through digital forensics and post attack analysis, PLXsert is able to build a global view of DDoS attacks, which is shared with Prolexic customers. By identifying the sources and associated attributes of individual attacks, the PLXsert team helps organizations adopt best practices and make more informed, proactive decisions about DDoS threats.

A complimentary copy of the Prolexic Q2 2013 Global DDoS Attack Report is available as a free PDF download from The Q3 2013 report will be released early in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Recent Domain Name System Attack Highlights Need for DNS Security Extensions (DNSSEC)

leave a comment »

SINGAPORE, July 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Recent events in the Asia Pacific region have highlighted the urgent need for organizations to better protect their Domain Name System (DNS) servers by implementing DNS security extensions (DNSSEC). Last week, in what might have been a Domain Name System (DNS) cache poisoning attack, domain name servers in Malaysia were compromised to redirect web surfers to a hacker’s site.

As a core network service, DNS connects any device to any website, application or other user. Because of its criticality in connecting users, DNS has increasingly become a hacking target. Malicious users that gain access to a DNS server can alter the DNS record in order to route users to a different IP address that is impersonating a legitimate site. With this, hackers can infect users with harmful malware or steal personal and corporate data.

“DNS security extensions use strong public key cryptography to ensure the validity and authenticity of the DNS response,” says Branko Miskov, Director of Product Management at BlueCat. “It lets you know whether or not the DNS information has been altered. In this recent incident, the top level domain was signed under DNSSEC. If customers had been using DNSSEC, their users would never have been redirected because the DNS request would have been deemed invalid. DNS security extensions establish a chain of trust from the domain to the customer.”

“Despite the business risks of inadequately secured DNS, many companies have been slow to adopt the DNSSEC security standard due to the added costs and management complexity involved,” says BK Lim, Country Manager, Adaptive Netpoleon Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. “BlueCat’s DNSSEC security solution removes the barriers to adoption by making DNSSEC simple and straightforward to implement and manage. Customers gain the peace of mind that their business connectivity is secure without any additional IT management burden.”

BlueCat, the leading provider of intelligent IP Address Management solutions, offers a smart, simple and automated DNSSEC solution. Organizations implementing BlueCat DNSSEC can:

  • Centralize key management
  • Implement single-click signing policies
  • Fully automate key rollover
  • Control DNSSEC signed zones from a central location
  • Gain visibility and actionable intelligence on all DNSSEC-related data
  • Easily demonstrate compliance during security audits
  • Integrate with Thales High Security Modules for key management for additional security

Security-conscious enterprises, government agencies and service providers trust BlueCat solutions to successfully implement and manage DNSSEC, and prevent potentially devastating security breaches.
