The Cost of AML Fines Soars to Over US$1 Billion in the Last Decade

leave a comment »

New BankersAccuity research outlines the movement of fines for AML violations over the past 10 years

SKOKIE, Ill., June 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — BankersAccuity, the global standard for payment efficiency and compliance solutions, today released new research entitled ‘Trends in anti-money laundering (AML) compliance’, looking at the movement of fines for illicit financial activity and money laundering over the past 10 years.

Research suggests there is a direct correlation between the severity of violations and size of fines. While the number of fines has decreased, the penalty amount has continued to increase. In 2003 there were 153 fines with just US$2.7 million worth of penalties; whilst in 2012 there were just 16 fines that totaled US$1.1 billion in penalties. (Note 1)

Henry Balani, Managing Director at BankersAccuity, comments: “2012 saw a tremendous increase in fines and penalties with several leading global banks hit with extremely large fines for AML and OFAC violations. The size of fines is typically based on several factors — level of egregiousness, willingness to self-report and ongoing remediation efforts. While the total number of fines has decreased, this trend is only temporary.”

As demonstrated during the first half of 2013, the number of fines from January to May 2013 has almost doubled compared to the same period of the previous year. (Note 2)

“Regulators have focused on high profile banks in recent years. The intent is to send a clear message to the market that violation of sanctions needs to be taken seriously by all banks and financial institutions. Now that the message has been sent, regulators in the upcoming years will again take a wider sweep and focus on institutions of all sizes,” Balani continues.

In general, fines are levied for a range of reasons from internal ‘payment stripping’ to knowingly making payments to sanctioned countries. With high-profile enforcement of AML regulations globally, organizations are faced with increased risk and greater challenges to achieving and maintaining compliance. Key events and developing trends over the last decade offer insight and important lessons for firms seeking to avoid participation in illicit financial transactions.

MUMBAI, India and DUBAI, UAE, June 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ —

Elitecore Technologies, the global provider of OSS/BSS, announced EliteCSM, a core session management platform for next-generation networks with preintegrated products including AAA, Map Gateway, PCRF, Diameter Signaling and Charging Gateway. The platform serves as a one-stop solution to increase revenues from existing and emerging services without having to go for a major overhaul each time there is an innovation thus, helping them adapt quickly to unpredictable changes in business environment.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130226/599701)

By using a common Diameter and RADIUS stack across all products which enable easy integration processes for seamless connectivity. EliteCSM drastically reduces development costs and project timelines . It also solves complex integration issues with multi-vendor network elements like GGSN, PGW, HSS, PCRF and OCS vendors, allowing operators to reuse their network for future services with negligible customization.

Says Dhaval Vora, VP, Product Management, Elitecore, “With emerging 3G, 4G networks and changing network dynamics, operators are trapped in a rigid eco-system in which new service creation and software development becomes time-consuming and expensive to design. It also causes service delays and disruptions in multi-vendor and multi-network deployments wherein each vendor has a different product roadmap or release timeline. To address these challenges, our EliteCSM platform delivers a future-proof investment making operators more flexible and efficient in creating new plans.”

The EliteCSM platform addresses multiple access networks such as FTTH, ADSL, 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, LTE, IMS and WiMax networks. The platform is designed for extreme performance and scalability and helps operators manage increasingly complex processes associated with next generation transformation by offering value-added services that drive ARPU growth.

About Elitecore:
Elitecore Technologies is a Carlyle group investee IT product company with presence across 90+ service providers across 30+ countries. Its pre-integrated BSS solutions comprise Billing & Revenue Management, PCRF, AAA, DSC and Wi-Fi offload, to help optimize operator networks by transferring them from a product-centric eco-system to a customer-centric one. The platform delivers high performance by applying innovations to scale CSP business offerings transforming them from existing to next-generation LTE, IMS and MVNO services. Elitecore’s capability in integrating multi-vendor IT and mobile core components, reduced time-to-market and personalized, interactive offerings enable monetization of next-generation services more effectively thus, enabling service providers act as experience providers while reducing TCO.

Ultrasound is widely used in medicine, as it is possible to perform both diagnosis and therapeutic procedures using ultrasound to guide interventional procedures. It is increasingly being used in trauma and first aid cases, with emergency ultrasound becoming a staple of most EMT response teams. “Asian higher education is undergoing a rapid transformation. Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China and Korea are at the forefront of the assault on the global academic elite,” says Ben Sowter, head of QS Intelligence Unit, which also compiles the QS World University Rankings.
“There are already 17% more Asian universities in the global top 200 since the recession, and the next two decades could see leading US and European universities objectively overtaken.”
QS University Rankings: Asia also shows a five-year surge in international students studying at ranked institutions in the region, from 175,286 in 2009 to 255,212 this year. Total international faculty has grown from 21,223 to 35,677.

leave a comment »

LONDON /PRNewswire/ —
Conclusions drawn from ‘Meet the Experience Hunters’ Round Table at ITLM by Chic Outlet Shopping®
“Chinese shoppers are becoming more sophisticated and are no longer just interested in brands but, instead, are seeking unique experiences,” says Chris Cabot, president of Value Retail China. The company hosted a round table event, ‘Meet the Experience Hunters’, at ITLM Asia in Shanghai on 5 June, in which Chris was one of four speakers. The event was designed to explore the psyche of the Asian luxury travelling consumer and touched on themes including luxury goods and travel and how to combine the two, authenticity and source of origin and ‘retail-tainment’.
To view the Multimedia News Release, please click:
http://www.multivu.com/mnr/61914-newly-wealthy-asians-seeking-retail-tainment
Value Retail is the creator and operator of the Chic Outlet Shopping® Villages, a unique concept in outlet shopping and the only company to specialise exclusively in the development and operation of luxury outlet shopping villages. The nine Villages across Europe offer an entire range of hospitality services including Welcome Centres, multilingual hosts, VIP Lounges, personal shoppers, ‘shop and drop’ hands-free shopping and a chauffeur service.
As Chris Cabot explains, the company believes part of the reason for its growth in tax-free sales of 34% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2012 is because the company is meeting the strong demand from international travellers for ‘experience shopping’: “The Villages are very much tourism destinations in their own right, providing a full day trip of ‘retail-tainment’. The experience they receive brings International tourists back time and again to visit us.”
Chic Outlet Shopping® exhibited at ILTM Asia for the first time this year. The round table event included three further speakers, who concluded:-
The Commentator-
YING SHEA- Chief Development Officer, Luxury Business, SK Group
“I am happy to see the fast development of the Chinese luxury market. Initially, people tended to buy things with big brand names and logo as symbol of their wealth and success, but once they pass that stage, they will eventually look for something new, which is a valued experience.”
The Traveller-
ALFRED CHANG, Vice President, Kuoni Group Travel Expert
“Chinese people with wealth like to be recognised. Besides shopping for pretty things, they want recognition from other people and high-quality service standards. Nowadays, more and more Chinese consumers also hope to be enhanced by the shopping experience, which includes private shopping.”
The Consumer and The Brands-
DANIEL WANG, Managing Editor & Feature Director, Madame Figaro China
“The temptation of luxury products to me is not only about its design or appearance but also a chance to fulfil a dream. Chinese consumers are experiencing the culture, the dream value and a lifestyle provided by the luxury product they purchase.”
The average spend of a Chinese shopper across the nine Chic Outlet Shopping® Villages is EUR 347, the highest of any of its markets. Chinese visitors to the Villages accounted for nearly a third (33%) of tax-free sales in the first three months of 2013, spending EUR 30 million, a 49% increase in year-on-year sales. The other highest markets for tax-free sales at the Villages were Russia (14%), the Middle East (12%) and Southeast Asia (11%). International visitors spent an average of EUR 309 per visit.
Chic Outlet Shopping® has launched an online Chic Travel Portal, for the travel trade and MICE market to create and purchase bespoke travel itineraries featuring local partners, as well as Chic Outlet Shopping® products. Basic packages are available across the Collection of Villages from just EUR 44 and include return transport from the nearest city centre on the luxury Shopping Express™ coach service, a Gift Card, a VIP Card providing an additional reduction of 10% in selected boutiques, lunch in one of the Village restaurants, and more. Chic Outlet Shopping® has more than 150 partnerships, which the travel trade can benefit from and offer their clients.
About Chic Outlet Shopping®
Chic Outlet Shopping® is the Collection of luxury outlet Villages by Value Retail, the only company to specialise exclusively in the development and operation of luxury outlet shopping villages. Currently home to more than 900 boutiques, the nine Villages offer the authentic previous seasons’ collections of leading luxury fashion and lifestyle brands with savings of up to 60%, and sometimes more, on the recommended retail price, all year round.

Largest Global Survey of Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients Shows Opportunity for Increased Collaboration Between Doctors And Patients And Further Education About Disease Progression

Multinational, Multidisciplinary Expert Panel Reveals Survey Findings, Asks Patients to Take Pledge as Part of RA: Join the Fight,an AbbVie GlobalInitiative

MADRID, June 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — RA: Join the Fight today presented at a launch event in Madrid the findings from the largest global rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patient survey, which included 10,171 patients across 42 countries. Findings show that while a majority of RA patients (74 percent) say they know a great deal or a moderate amount about RA, nearly half (46 percent) do not recognize that the joint damage caused by the disease is irreversible. This anonymous survey also found that, compared to those that do not have a disease management plan, patients who have a disease management plan with their healthcare provider were nearly twice as likely to feel hopeful (39 percent vs. 23 percent) and confident (31 percent vs. 16 percent) when asked how they felt about living with their RA over the past week.

To view the multimedia assets associated with this release, please click:
http://www.multivu.com/mnr/61994-abbvie-ra-join-the-fight-rheumatoid-arthritis-global-survey-findings.

The survey findings highlight knowledge gaps between what patients may know about RA and how they are managing their disease. Although about nine in ten patients (91 percent) say that they have a good understanding of why it is important to manage their RA, as many as two in three (66 percent) mistakenly agree that a lack of pain means their RA is under control. In addition, patients who are more involved in the RA community, including those that are members of patient advocacy organizations and those that interact with other RA patients, are more likely to be knowledgeable about RA and more actively involved in managing their disease. The survey also reported that about two in five RA patients (41 percent) say that their job/career or ability to work was negatively impacted by their RA, and one in three of these patients say they have had to take days off (33 percent) or stop working altogether for a period of time (32 percent).

“I was surprised to see that although more than four in five patients recognize that RA is a severe, progressive and destructive disease, only 56 percent have a disease management plan in place,” said Peter Nash, MBBS, FRACP, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, University of Queensland, Australia and RA: Join the Fight advisory committee member. “There is clearly a need for patients and doctors to work together to develop a long-term strategy to manage RA. If not managed properly, over time, advanced RA can result in permanent joint destruction, disability and loss of work.”

At the heart of RA: Join the Fight is a pledge. With the endorsement of its global advisory committee and more than 40 patient and medical organizations from around the world, RA: Join the Fight is issuing a call-to-action for increased patient involvement in RA disease management. Patients are encouraged to visit http://www.RAJointheFight.com to take the pledge to start the conversation and collaborate with their doctor to develop a plan to manage their disease.

“It is interesting to see aspects of my personal experiences as someone living with RA reflected through the lens of more than ten thousand others worldwide,” said Claire Kinneavy, RA patient, RA: Join the Fight advisory committee member, past director of Arthritis Ireland. “The more you are involved with the management of your disease, the more in control you will feel about it. That’s why we are asking people living with RA to pledge to talk to their doctor about their experiences with RA and their goals for the future.”

About the Survey
The anonymous global RA patient survey was conducted by Harris Interactive in 42 countries via paper (six countries) and online (36 countries) between February 14 and April 11, 2013. The survey evaluated results from more than 10,000 adults with RA from around the world (n=10,171). Survey respondents have been living with a diagnosis of RA for an average of nine years, and were more likely to be women than men (74 percent vs. 26 percent), with a mean age of 49.8 years old. Complete survey methodology, including sample size per country, is available upon request.

About RA: Join the Fight
RA: Join the Fight, an AbbVie global initiative, aims to be a global source of information to help educate people living with RA and those who support them. SINGAPORE, June 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — The Chandler Corporation announced today a US $99 million investment in Hoan My Medical Corporation, acquiring an 80% stake in Vietnam’s largest private hospital group. The investment in Hoan My complements the healthcare businesses the Chandler Corporation owns and operates in Indonesia and the Philippines, positioning it to become a leading private healthcare provider in Asia.

Hoan My: A Track Record of Providing Quality, Creating Value

Hoan My is Vietnam’s only integrated hospital network; it is a trusted brand which is recognised for its clinical and service excellence. To meet the country’s rising demand for quality healthcare, Hoan My has grown significantly since its establishment in 1997. The group now comprises five hospitals and four clinics, providing affordable, quality healthcare to more than one million people in Vietnam’s emerging middle class.

Chandler Corporation Invests in the Well-being and Prosperity of Nations

David Walker, CEO of the Chandler Corporation, commented on the investment:

“The acquisition of Hoan My is an important step toward realising the Chandler Corporation’s goal of becoming a leading Pan-Asian healthcare services provider. The Chandler Corporation builds and invests in great companies which create social value and drive national prosperity. Hoan My has done both in Vietnam for the past 16 years. Our investment reflects the value we place on healthcare, and our commitment to give people the opportunity to live healthier and more prosperous lives.”
