CARMEN UNVEILED ON SYDNEY HARBOUR
SYDNEY /PRNewswire/ — GIANT LETTERS SPELLING OUT ‘CARMEN’ NOW ADORN AN OPERA STAGE THAT APPEARS TO FLOAT ON SYDNEY HARBOUR. The creative vision for Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour: Carmen has been revealed with the final ‘C’ of six giant letters spelling out ‘CARMEN’ now in place on the harbour-top opera stage. The spectacular Spain-Meets-Hollywood style stage will set the scene of Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour: Carmen, which opens Friday 22 March for three weeks only.

Finishing touches are unveiled today, on the magnificent set of Opera on Sydney Harbour: Carmen, which opens on Fri 22 March. More info at http://www.operaonsydneyharbour.com.au
The Hollywood-inspired Carmen letters measure a staggering 9 metres high and 25 metres wide. When the production opens next Friday 22 March, they will be spot-lit by lighting towers on and around the main stage during the production. The scaffolding supporting the letters doubles as a structure for the singers and dancers to climb and perform from during the show. The stage itself is 32 metres by 24 metres and resembles a round, blood-stained bullfighting ring. It sits on a platform supported by 16 pylons sunk into Sydney Harbour.
The Carmen letters will cut an imposing silhouette across Sydney Harbour for the duration of the production, 22 March – 12 April. It positively dwarfs Australian icons such as the Big Banana and Big Pineapple in scale.
The letters symbolise the glamorous, seductive facade of Carmen and will be seen in all their glossy glory by visitors looking across the harbour from the Sydney Opera House, by joggers around the Royal Botanic gardens, by commuters driving across the Harbour Bridge, or those travelling by ferry (or cruise ship!) on Sydney Harbour. The audience will see the letters in reverse, signifying the seedy underworld in which the gypsies’ underhanded activities take place at the tobacco factory in Seville, Spain.
The Carmen set features other spectacular effects including a life-sized slaughtered bull (post bull-fight) and fireworks. Dancers will whirl about the stage in sparkling Spain-meets-Hollywood flamenco costumes, bringing colour and movement to the blood-red stage.
Some of the world’s best opera talents have converged in Sydney to perform in Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour: Carmen. Hailing from Sydney, Perth and Tasmania in Australia, from New York and Memphis in the USA and even from the Ukraine, this is a truly global cluster of opera stars. When the show opens, they’ll have had just over four weeks to bring this brand new outdoor production to perfection, ahead of the opening night on Friday 22 March when they will perform on Australia’s most unique opera stage, atop the water of Sydney Harbour. A nightly audience of 3,000 seated at the edge of The Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney will enjoy tapas, paella, Spanish BBQ and cocktails in luxury, while they watch the drama of Carmen unfold beneath the stars.

Lun Chuntao Solo Exhibition to be presented at MOCA Loewen

leave a comment »

SINGAPORE /PRNewswire/ — Hosted by Museum of Contemporary Art in Singapore in association with the Linda Gallery and J.P. Art Centre, “Lu Chuntao Solo Exhibition” opened at MOCA Loewen at 3 pm, March 10, and will be held till March 17. The exhibition will feature more than 20 latest works of the contemporary ink artist Lu Chuntao from the end of 2012 to early 2013.
Lu Chuntao was born in the 60s in Shanghai. His exploration and experiments in ink painting inevitably took place in the context of the dramatic changes in Chinese contemporary art scene since 1980s and were in line with the evolution of Shanghai-school of painting. Looking back upon Lu’s practice, we would easily find that he’s been consciously catching up with the changes of the time. Cultural nostalgia functions as a source of inspiration for his practice. By interpreting the “imagery” of Chinese classic aesthetics with a contemporary touch, he endeavors to detach his work from the sense of solemnity and aloofness unique to traditional literati painting and to create a poetic and yet critical secret land of culture. In terms of painting language, he manages to integrate techniques of both Chinese and western painting and of both classic and contemporary painting, and to combine the narration of time with space, turning it into a flowing multi-dimensional media to extend the dimensionality of ink art. In terms of the use of colors, he gives up the tradition of using ink only and tries to outline shapes with colors, which becomes a signature of his style. Lu’s ink art sets an exemplary example of individual artist based exploration in the course of the development of Shanghai-school of painting, which is widely recognized as an origin of the contemporaneity of Chinese art.
MOCA Loewen’s exhibition continues Lu’s previous theme “Lotus Pond” series, but he pursues strong sense of “work consciousness” and “work expression” on further. This time Lu Chuntao’s “Lotus Pond” coming out in Singapore is evidence that his exploration and practice gain the recognition of contemporary art. The exhibition will bring audience a brand-new visual feast about Lu’s “Lotus Pond,” and thereby enhance the ink painting influence in the international art exchanges.

New Progress Announced In The Lawsuit Against Nobel Prize Assembly By Dr. Rongxiang Xu

leave a comment »

LOS ANGELES /PRNewswire/ — The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, The Nobel Assembly responded to Dr. Rongxiang Xu’s defamation lawsuit on Feb. 22, 2013 by filing a notice to remove the lawsuit from State Court to Federal Court, in Los Angeles.
(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130305/LA71370)
According to attorneys for Dr. Xu, the transfer of the case to Federal Court would not affect the substantive nature of the lawsuit but is merely a procedural strategic move by the Defendant. Dr. Xu’s lawsuit was filed in December 2012 in connection with the Nobel Assembly’s awarding of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
According to Dr. Xu, the lawsuit was not intended to tarnish the reputation of the Nobel Assembly, but it was filed, in part, to clarify a vital misunderstanding concerning the “conversion of human somatic cells into stem cells and regeneration of physiological tissues.” Through his own research on human regenerative science during the past several decades, Dr. Xu claims to have discovered and proved that this conversion is an innate ability found in our cells, a natural phenomenon that he says he has demonstrated through successful clinical applications time and time again. According to his claims, the cellular conversion does not require the engineering of man-made cells, which is the approach that was taken by the recipients of the 2012 Nobel Prize.
In his complaint, Dr. Xu provides examples of the results of some of his clinical applications, including an array of patents and publications that detail and verify the “in situ conversion of human somatic cells into stem cells followed by in situ regeneration of physiological tissues.” These applications include:
in situ skin regeneration for severe burns
regenerative restoration of severed fingers
regenerative elimination of cutaneous scars
in situ regeneration of degenerative atrophic gastrointestinal villi back to normal structure of young status
Based on his results, Dr. Xu insists that the “conversion of human somatic cells into stem cells and regeneration of physiological tissues” is an innate human ability, not one that should be created by man-made cells. But since the Nobel Assembly awarded two scientists for the latter approach, for artificially converting somatic cells into a state of self-proclaimed “pluripotency” through nuclear transfer and cellular reprogramming, Dr. Xu believes that the Nobel Assembly had a duty to accurately describe the Laureates’ works and acknowledge Dr. Xu’s findings that were demonstrated and proved years earlier. Dr. Xu believes that the Nobel Assembly’s description of the Laureates’ work was misleading and it disparaged and undermined his scientific achievements and professional reputation, which is what led to the filing of his complaint.
Dr. Xu strongly believes that the public should be made aware of the critical distinction between having the “conversion of human somatic cells into stem cells and regeneration of physiological tissues” as an innate human ability versus one that is produced by artificial, man-made cells. The lawsuit is not only an action taken to protect his science, but also one that he hopes to edify the public about the responsibility in life science research regarding facticity of knowledge. After all, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine represents the mainstream of life science research and influences directly the safety of human lives, which is of the most importance.
About Rongxiang Xu
Dr. Xu is the founder of human body regenerative restoration science. He filed a lawsuit in December 2012 against The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, a body which awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The suit was filed in Superior Court of the State of California, Orange County Central Justice Center and cites Libel and unfair competition. On October 8, 2012, The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2012 was awarded jointly to Sir John B. Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka “for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent. Dr. Xu alleges that some of the statements made by the Nobel Assembly were false as he was the scientist who made the discovery a decade earlier.
