Advanced Knee Implants Serve a Wider Patient Pool in North America, Finds Frost & Sullivan

leave a comment »

Manufacturers innovate to curb medical tourism diverted to emerging countries
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. /PRNewswire/ — Constant product innovations are livening up the U.S. knee implants market, encouraging patients to opt for knee implant procedures. Furthermore, patients and surgeons are attracted to the reduced costs and higher reimbursements rates for advanced implants. To thrive in this fiercely competitive market, manufacturers must demonstrate quick time-to-market or differentiate their products through personalization.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan’s (http://www.medicaldevices.frost.com) Analysis of the Knee Implants Market research finds that the market earned revenues of US$4.42 billion in 2011 and estimates this to reach US$5.49 billion in 2016.
If you are interested in more information on this research, please send an email to Britni Myers, Corporate Communications, at britni.myers@frost.com, with your full name, company name, job title, telephone number, company email address, company website, city, state and country.
Surgeons primarily seek implants that offer accurate fit, wear resistance, and rapid post-surgery recovery. Implant manufacturers are striving to develop products that meet these criteria, as their successful implantations reassure patients that are apprehensive about undergoing surgery, expanding the patient pool.
“As orthopedic surgeons become familiar with the latest technologies, they are more likely to adopt new knee implant procedures,” said Frost & Sullivan Senior Research Analyst Aarti Shetty. “This is leading to better patient outcomes as well as improved surgery times.”
While developing cutting-edge products, orthopedic manufactures also need to be mindful of the price of their implants in a sluggish economy. Patients are increasingly traveling to emerging countries for low-cost surgeries, expert care, the latest technology, and comfortable accommodation.
Most patients consider knee replacement surgeries elective and live with the discomfort until a cheaper alternative is available. While partial knee surgeries are a cost-effective substitute, manufacturers should look to develop technologies and products that prompt patients to opt for surgeries in the United States rather than travel abroad.
“Hospitals and surgeons prefer to conduct business with vendors for all their implant needs, so it is becoming important for orthopedic companies to become a one-stop shop,” said Shetty. “Companies will also do well to develop surgical kits and orthobiologics so they can provide all the tools required for a knee implant surgery.”
These proactive product development and differentiation efforts will go a long way in raising the overall revenues of the market.

The Global Non-Renewable Inverter Market Finds New Avenues to Growth

leave a comment »

Frost & Sullivan hosts complimentary webinar examining the ins and outs of this mature market
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. /PRNewswire/ —
WHEN: 1:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, Sept.18, 2012
LOCATION: Online, with complimentary registration
SPEAKERS: Senior Industry Analyst Anu Elizabeth Cherian for Frost & Sullivan’s Energy & Power Systems practice
The mature nature of the non-renewable inverter market has triggered manufacturers to look outside of North America and Europe for expansion. Due to the lack of sufficient power infrastructure in Asia-Pacific, Frost & Sullivan foresees opportunities for growth in this region. However, the lack of product innovation and cheap replications of branded products has been a key challenge for manufacturers in this market worldwide. Furthermore, an increasing interest in renewable inverters has diverted focus from the traditional market for power inverters.
Why you should attend:
Discover the drivers and restraints in the global market for non-renewable inverters
Review the competitive landscape of this market
Identify growth opportunities for non-renewable inverters
This briefing will benefit manufacturers, distributors and service providers by discussing trends and providing forward-looking projections for the global non-renewable inverter market.
Supporting Quotes
“The lack of robust power infrastructure in some Asia-Pacific countries has sparked remarkable growth for inverters,” observes Frost & Sullivan Senior Industry Analyst Anu Cherian. “Despite this, lack of innovation has slowed the non-renewable inverter market. However, products in the North American market produced by global manufacturers are robust and long-lasting. Hence, manufacturers constantly face the challenge of pursuing new customers in the midst of strong competition.”

Pediatricians Highlight Typhoid Pandemic in Asia

leave a comment »

Experts Call for Expanded Immunization Efforts
KUCHING, Malaysia /PRNewswire/ — The Coalition against Typhoid (CaT) called on policymakers and ministries of health across Asia to make typhoid vaccination a priority in their countries at the 14th Asia Pacific Congress of Pediatrics. CaT, an initiative of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, brought together leading pediatricians from across Asia to discuss the hyper-endemic burden of typhoid in the region and offer solutions to combat this growing epidemic.
“Pediatric associations and others across the region recognize typhoid’s serious impact, particularly the rising and widespread threat of drug resistant typhoid. Many–including India and Indonesia–have made recommendations supporting the use of typhoid vaccines,” said Dr. Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, Founding Chair, Women and Child Health Division, The Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan. “National stakeholders and policymakers should review the evidence and discuss the adoption of typhoid vaccines.”
Despite the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendation to prioritize typhoid vaccines for “immediate” implementation at a 2009 WHO meeting, many countries in Asia have yet to recommend or introduce typhoid vaccines.
“Since 1997, the Vietnamese Ministry of Health has used typhoid vaccination to effectively control disease in high risk districts,” said Dr. Nguyen Van Cuong, Deputy Head of Vietnam’s National Immunization Program. “Successful programs have also been implemented in China and Thailand.”
According to the WHO, typhoid impacts an estimated 21 million people and causes more than 200,000 deaths annually, predominantly among preschool and school-age children in developing countries of Asia and Africa. WHO reports that 90 percent of typhoid deaths occur in Asia.
“WHO approved typhoid vaccines are available now, yet these tools are not yet fully embraced by ministries of health across Asia,” said Dr. Christopher Nelson, Director of the Coalition against Typhoid Secretariat at Sabin. “Pediatric associations and other stakeholders should review the evidence and discuss the implementation of typhoid vaccines.”
Typhoid is widespread in poverty-stricken communities without access to safe water and basic sanitation and spreads through contaminated water and food. In addition to the high number of deaths, typhoid infection impacts school attendance and achievement and limits workforce participation and productivity.
“In Bangladesh, typhoid is a leading cause of hospital admission among children, adolescents, and young adults with fever-like symptoms,” said Dr. Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Immediate past Secretary General Bangladesh Paediatric Association (BPA), Secretary of the Immunization sub Committee BPA, and Head of the Dept. of Child Health, Gonosasthyo Samaj Vittick Medical College, Savar, Dhaka.
In their discussions and presentations, these pediatricians emphasized the need for improved surveillance and control programs throughout the region, noting that in order to have the greatest impact, typhoid vaccination efforts must be implemented in conjunction with other public health programs, such as access to safe drinking water and the promotion of good hygiene practices, including hand washing.

Tobacco Farmers Unite in Condemning WHO’s Plan to Threaten 30 Million Jobs

leave a comment »

ITGA Launches Global Petition Campaign to Oppose Draconian Measures
CASTELO BRANCO, Portugal/PRNewswire/ — More than 30 million tobacco farmers worldwide today reacted with outrage to the publication of new proposals to regulate tobacco farming by the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), vowing to rally governments to oppose the measures.
“By suggesting governments phase out tobacco growing, these ideological recommendations put the jobs of more than 30 million farmers at risk without providing them with any economically viable alternative crops,” said Antonio Abrunhosa, the chief executive officer of the International Tobacco Growers’ Association (ITGA). “The WHO has consistently refused to listen to tobacco growers in drafting the proposals that directly impact this industry. By doing so, they’ve become like a blind man driving a steamroller.”
The current proposals [1] go far beyond the FCTC’s original mandate [2]. They are designed to force tobacco growers out of business by creating artificial restrictions on tobacco supply while failing to address the growing demand for the crop. This is being done through recommendations that seek to:
Restrict production by regulating the seasons in which tobacco can be grown
Reduce the area allocated for tobacco farming
Ban financial or technical support for tobacco farmers
More absurd and discriminatory recommendations such as, banning contracts between farmers and their clients or banning bank loans to tobacco growers were already refused by governments from tobacco growing countries, but may be proposed again at the next Conference of the Parties (CoP5), which takes place in Seoul from November 12th – 17th, 2012.
“Now is the time for governments to act and oppose these draconian measures,” Abrunhosa said. To rally governments worldwide in opposition to the measures, the ITGA is launching a global petition campaign, available online and through growers’ associations. The petition calls on government leaders to “Reject these irrational and destructive proposals in favour of a more realistic approach that will help tobacco farmers adapt if and when the demand for tobacco evolves.”
The petition is available online at http://protectfarmers.tobaccoleaf.org/join-our-fight.aspx.
Notes to Editors:
1. These proposals relate to “Articles 17&18” and will be discussed at COP 5 (Conference of the Parties), which takes place in Seoul from November 12th-17th, 2012. All 175 countries who have signed the WHO’s “Framework Convention on Tobacco Control” (FCTC) are eligible to attend the Conference and vote.
2. The original goals of the FCTC stated that governments should provide: “technical and financial assistance to aid the economic transition of tobacco growers and workers whose livelihoods are seriously affected as a consequence of tobacco control programs.”

Grid Parity Vital to Ensure Higher Adoption of Green Semiconductors, Finds Frost & Sullivan

North America to account for large part of annual installed capacity by 2017, Europe loses ground on grid parity to Asia Pacific market
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. /PRNewswire/ — While solar power still reigns as the most favored alternate source of energy, this market is going through consolidation in terms of capacity and competition. As a traditional stronghold of solar photovoltaics (PVs), Europe has been battling a financially weaker eurozone, causing investors to shift their focus to other regions such as North America and Asia Pacific.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.semiconductors.frost.com), Global Market for Green Semiconductors, finds that the market earned revenues of $46.63 billion in 2011 and expects this to reach $104.32 billion in 2017 with North America accounting for 60 percent of that year’s annual installed capacity.

As the solar market is oversupplied and its demand is unpredictable, the price per watt of solar power has dipped. This issue also highlights the loopholes in inventory build-up, sparking concerns about price shocks when demand flattens. However, the current consolidation and solar power’s growing affordability open up more markets in North America, Japan and China.
Asia’s rise as a thriving market for solar PV is a result of its expanding economy. Consequently, it has a higher dependence on imports to meet its energy needs. Most of its oil will be shipped from politically unstable regions, along vulnerable sea routes and complex pipeline routes that cross several national borders. These hurdles are forcing the region to turn to alternate sources of energy such as solar PV.
Even though solar power will reach grid parity by 2015, power and grid management will continue to pose problems to utility owners. Therefore, many countries are working on installing smart grids and generating opportunities for distributed energy production through solar PV.
“Most market participants are increasing fab capacity to ensure that once grid parity is attained, market demand will be met and a high economy of scale will compensate for the low cost/watt of production,” said Frost & Sullivan Research Associate Shahul Nath. “Standardization among the panels will also enable electrical components to reduce costs and enable grid parity.”
Until grid parity can be achieved, the slow pace of smart grid technology adoption could lead to market saturation. This is because traditional grids are incapable of controlling and managing solar power due to its unpredictability in power delivery. Other macro-economic issues, such as tightening liquidity markets and budget cuts, will also bog down the market.
The lack of infrastructure and vacillating support among governments has further stalled growth in this policy-driven market. Current policies and incentives, such as feed-in-tariff (FiT), make grids more compatible and encourage utilities to accommodate them.
“These policies have been active in Europe for the last few years but in 2011 to 2015, countries, such as Germany, will be cutting back on them, while North America and Asia-Pacific will continue to implement such regulations,” said Frost & Sullivan Research Associate Robin Varghese.
Greater cooperation from governments and a larger number of application sectors will prop up the global solar PV market.
