Vietnam’s First Fingerprint-Enabled Debit Card Launches with TEMENOS Biometrics
GENEVA, Aug. 7, 2012/PRNewswire-Asia/ —
Mekong Development Bank triples current account base with launch of Vietnam’s first biometric debit card, through TEMENOS T24 Biometrics, at NCR ATMs across Vietnam
Temenos (SIX: TEMN), the market leading provider of banking software, today announces the launch of Vietnam’s first fingerprint-enabled debit card, at Mekong Development Bank. The bank has implemented Temenos T24 Biometric fingerprint authentication to provide the ‘unbanked’ population of Vietnam with access to banking services. Mekong Development Bank is already running the bank on T24, this was a simple modular upgrade to incorporate biometrics into the system seamlessly.
Biometric authentication lowers the risk of fraudulent transactions, whilst providing a more convenient banking service for both the rural and urban populations of Vietnam – of a population of 86 million people, only 20% of Vietnam has a bank account. Since the initial launch in June, Mekong Development Bank’s current account base has tripled, and the deposit balance per debit card account is two times higher than a regular account without a debit card. Customer fingerprints will be captured by Mekong Development Bank at the point of opening an account – and then used at any one of 33 NCR SelfServ(TM) ATMs across Vietnam. This will be extended to other touch points in the near future in line with Mekong Development Bank’s proposition to make things simple for the customer.
Nicholas Chee, deputy CEO and head of consumer business, Mekong Development Bank says: “Being the first bank in Vietnam to bring biometric fingerprint authentication to its customers confirms Mekong Development Bank’s commitment to providing the only truly convenient and personal banking experience available in the region. Temenos delivered us a state of the art capability in less than six months, which simply plugs into Temenos T24 – our existing core banking system. Incorporating the technology at NCR SelfServ(TM) ATMs across Vietnam ensures that customers experience consistent biometric fingerprint capabilities throughout the country. Preliminary research shows that an overwhelming 91 percent of customers surveyed after activating their debit card would recommend that their family and friends sign up for the product.”
Lee Volante, director business solution group for APAC, Temenos says: “For decades, banks worldwide have used biometrics for security and access control – to access vaults, etc. But this technology is only starting to permeate the consumer experience on a mass scale in developing countries, where it has commercial value as a means to customer acquisition. Mekong Development Bank is a true pioneer in its adoption of this technology, which will help the bank to continue to build market share with its easy-to-use and convenient consumer technology. We’re delighted that T24 Biometrics is enabling this new banking paradigm in Vietnam.”
Mike van der Wal, managing director of NCR in Southeast Asia, comments: “More than half the world’s population – concentrated in developing markets such as Vietnam – does not access formal banking services. Mekong Development Bank’s biometric NCR ATMs, which identify consumers by their fingerprint in place of a personal identification number, represent a major step forward in bringing banking services to the entire population of Vietnam. Mekong Development Bank’s customers can now enjoy convenient access with increased security.”
Founded in 1992, Mekong Development Bank re-launched in 2009 under a new dynamic, modern, professional and convenient brand. Pivotal to this ethos is biometric authentication, which will revolutionise the way banking is undertaken in the country and grow Mekong Development Bank’s market share.
Volante, Temenos continues: “Mekong Development Bank’s experimental nature in the field of biometrics is something for other banks to sit up and pay attention to. With such innovative technology available, the opportunities for banks to capture market share are enormous, and the future of biometrics across multiple channels such as mobile and online banking is now a possibility.”
Temenos is one of the only core banking systems with integrated biometric capability. It is a component of the T24 system, which has a larger installed base than any other banking software provider. T24 Biometrics is in use at financial institutions across Africa, with Mekong Development Bank being its first Asian customer to adopt biometric authentication.

ATC Global’s Growing VIP Hosted Buyer Programme Set to Boost Exhibitors’ Sales
LONDON, August 7, 2012/PRNewswire-Asia/ —
ATC Global announced today that it is expanding its VIP Hosted Buyer Programme for the third consecutive year. This unique service at their annual Air Traffic Management exhibition in Amsterdam has become a potent business opportunity for the industry. At this year’s event the VIP Hosted Buyer Programme enabled leading suppliers and potential customers from across the globe to cultivate new and existing relationships with a combined investment value of over USD $490 million.
ATC Global’s VIP Hosted Buyer Programme provides pre-qualified sales leads to exhibitors by arranging meetings with CEOs and Directors of Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) that are planning development projects. A dedicated team works throughout the year to compile the desired product and service offerings of each exhibitor and match these with the investment plans of all relevant ANSPs, allowing all parties to agree on an efficient and well-planned meeting schedule months prior to the event. ATC Global subsidises the cost of ANSPs attending the event through this programme, dependent on travel budgets.
Karen Adams, Director of Business Development for ITT Exelis, said: “The VIP Hosted Buyer Programme provides an opportunity to meet new potential customers, and other decision makers from geographical regions that our sales team have difficulty accessing during the year#I thought this was well executed. Investment plans and project details of the hosted buyer ANSPs were provided to us prior to any pre-arranged meetings, allowing sufficient time to prepare for meetings and to have thorough discussions about the buyer’s needs.”
This year, ATC Global’s professional event management team facilitated 197 pre-arranged and over 130 ad hoc meetings between buyers and suppliers. ATC Global is the only occasion where the fastest growing ANSPs from across Latin America, Africa and Asia are sponsored by the organisers to bring their business to the Exhibitors. ATC Global 2013, taking place at the Amsterdam RAI on 12-14 March, has already received applications from emerging markets such as Zimbabwe, Lebanon, Peru, Uruguay, COCESNA, Botswana, Nepal and Morocco to participate in the programme, with many more to be announced in the coming weeks.
Mr B Ngwarai, Director Air Navigation Services, Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, said, “The ATC Global 2012 VIP programme enabled our organization’s participation in a well-organised, world class exhibition and conference. Pre-arranged meetings with suppliers of CNS/ATM systems were a productive way of navigating through the exhibition halls with many suppliers. These initiatives assisted in time management as it is easy to overstay on one stand. The concierge service was highly customised, with a personalized touch. ATC Global financial assistance made it possible for our organisation to participate in this special ATM event, even in the face of budgetary constraints.”
Paula Milburn says: “ATC Global’s priority is to listen to the needs of our clients and maximise the return of investment for all parties attending the exhibition. We have designed the VIP Hosted Buyer programme to reach out to every global region and enable the broadest range of ANSPs and suppliers to come together. Our dedicated service goes beyond the networking opportunities available at other exhibitions and allows all attendees to maximise their connections in an independent business environment.”

DHL Express Posts Record Increase in CO2 Efficiency
Asia-Pacific 2011 results improved by 21% despite impressive volume growth with Bangladesh, Japan, and South Korea top performers
SINGAPORE, Aug. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, has achieved record improvements of CO2 efficiency (Note 1) with results up 21 per cent in 2011 compared to 2010 for its Express division in Asia-Pacific. This is the third consecutive year that DHL Express Asia-Pacific has achieved double-digit efficiency improvements in DHL’s annual carbon accounting process, despite increases in volume due to the continued economic recovery.

Jerry Hsu, CEO, DHL Express Asia Pacific, said: “For an organization of our size with huge volume growth, sustaining carbon efficiency improvements would be a triumph. However, it is an amazing achievement that our teams around the region have managed to improve our performance by over 20 percent.”
The business in Bangladesh proved to be the region’s most outstanding performer. It achieved the highest improvement rating of 27 percent with its continued investment in cleaner technology like CNG vehicles, while reducing reliance on least energy efficient power sources such as power-diesel generators. This is in addition to its continued significant effort in increasing its operational efficiency with better route planning and optimization.
Other top performers include DHL Express operations in Japan, South Korea and China which achieved CO2 efficiency improvements of 23 per cent, 22 per cent and 19 per cent respectively. The business in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam also did well, achieving double digit performance improvements in 2011.
Mr. Hsu added, “With this level of innovation and commitment to the DHL GoGreen program, we are on track to beat our target of improving the carbon efficiency of our operations and those of our transport subcontractors by 30 per cent by 2020, compared to 2007. DHL’s commitment to sustainability is making a significant difference to the planet and to our clients and for 2012, we will continue to push harder for even more savings internally and for our customers.”
DHL was the first global logistics provider to set a quantified CO2efficiency targets under its GoGreen program. DHL Express Asia Pacific started the assessment of its carbon footprint from energy consumption in real estate and ground transport to measure and improve carbon efficiency through abatement programs. This program was first introduced by DHL Express in 2008 and now covers over 1,000 facilities in 27 markets across Asia-Pacific. In 2009, DHL Express in Asia Pacific improved overall CO2efficiency by 19 per cent over 2008, and in 2010, the figure was 14.1 per cent.
Record efficiency levels were achieved in 2011 as a result of a variety of initiatives under DHL’s region-wide GoGreen program. Programs included optimizing delivery routes, using clean fuels and consolidating facilities. Innovative initiatives and latest technologies that were deployed also helped to optimize processes and operations, which in turned helped to reduce CO2 emissions.
Market-specific CO2reduction programs were also rolled out. For example, DHL Japan’s project team responded to the massive power shortages across the country, caused by the earthquake and tsumani, by implementing widespread abatement measures from installing LED lights, re-setting air-conditioners to 28 degrees, and switching off lights at certain times and in certain areas. In South Korea, Express service centers were consolidated and electric scooters replaced petrol vehicles for deliveries. The business also switched to drawbar trucks, which allowed it to halve the number of trucks needed. Meanwhile in China, the business managed its improvements by route and asset optimization, and re-lamping (Note 2).
DHL Express was the first global logistics company to offer a carbon neutral shipping service. DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral (Note 3) calculates the carbon emissions generated by each shipment and offsets these emissions by reinvesting in recognized climate protection projects such as hydropower, biomass or wind energy. Globally, the DP DHL group successfully shipped more than 1.86 billion GOGREEN shipments in 2011, offsetting 134,000 tonnes of CO2 for customers.
Notes:
1. Includes Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Scope 1 & 2 CO2 emissions on the ground, but excludes all aviation CO2 emissions.
2. Replacement of more energy-efficient lighting
3. DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral is an all-inclusive carbon neutral transportation service. It comprises the calculation of CO2 of every shipment, the offsetting of CO2 emissions through DHL’s Carbon Management function, and the annual verification CO2 offsetting by an external third party.
