leave a comment »

New offering will enable Splunk users to leverage the archiving and specialized analytics of Hadoop and will deliver Splunk’s real-time enterprise capabilities and ease-of-use to Hadoop developers

NEW YORK, Nov. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — Splunk Inc., the leading provider of operational intelligence software, today announced that it will provide integration for its Splunk Enterprise™ software with Apache™ Hadoop™.  The new software package, called Splunk Enterprise™ with Hadoop, provides benefits to both Splunk users and enterprises planning on deploying Hadoop.

“Splunk has proven itself as a market leader for delivering operational intelligence from massive machine data, and Hadoop is a great platform for data science. Bringing these two worlds together is a very natural fit,” said Todd Papaioannou, entrepreneur in residence at Battery Ventures and former Chief Architect for Yahoo’s Global Cloud Computing team, where he was integral in shaping and driving the strategic direction of Yahoo!’s Cloud and Hadoop teams.

Splunk provides software that enables users to collect, monitor, analyze, search and report on massive streams of real-time and historical machine data and includes enterprise capabilities, such as role-based access controls. The new offering will leverage the capabilities of Splunk Enterprise and Hadoop. Users will be able to:

 –  Collect machine data with Splunk Enterprise from tens of thousands of sources, perform real-time search, rapid data analysis, monitoring and alerting, then optionally deliver data to Hadoop for archival or to run specialized batch analytics
 –  Use Splunk to run MapReduce queries against data in Hadoop, and then pull the resulting data sets into Splunk for further processing, analysis, to create dashboards, and to share the results
 –  Extend Splunk’s authentication and role-based access controls to protect data stored in Hadoop as well as Splunk
 –  Use Splunk APIs and SDKs to integrate the data in Splunk Enterprise and Hadoop with other applications
 –  Monitor and troubleshoot Hadoop deployments as well as the rest of the IT infrastructure using Splunk’s proven capabilities to deliver greater reliability and productivity.

“This integrated offering provides access to Splunk’s real-time capabilities, ease-of-use and enterprise functionality that people in IT around the world have come to love”, said Erik Swan, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Splunk. “We believe our fully integrated solution, rather than just offering a simple Hadoop connector, will enable Splunk customers and Hadoop developers to accelerate mission-critical big data projects successfully.”

David Menninger, Vice President and Research Director, Ventana Research said, “In our recent Hadoop and Information Management benchmark research two of the biggest technology obstacles of Hadoop cited by participants were real-time capabilities and integration. This integration announcement from Splunk is significant because it addresses both of these issues, providing real-time search and monitoring of machine data as well as integration with Hadoop for its advanced batch analytics. We see the resulting combination of big data technologies will benefit both Splunk users and Hadoop developers alike.”

Splunk Enterprise with Hadoop is expected to be available for download in Q1 2012. For more information please visit www.splunk.com/goto/bigdata .

MediaTek Announces Global Partnership to Bring Facebook to ‘Smart-Feature Phones’

leave a comment »

NEW DELHI, India, Nov. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — MediaTek Inc., a leading fabless semiconductor company for wireless communications and digital multimedia solutions, and Facebook today announced a global partnership that will see Facebook embedded into MediaTek’s mobile platform solutions, enabling users in emerging markets to access Facebook, many for the first time, via affordable mobile devices.

MediaTek is the world’s largest mobile chipset platform provider, shipping over 500 million units in 2010, for assembly into a wide range of mobile phones distributed worldwide. This partnership will allow users of handsets powered by MediaTek’s Runtime Environment (MRE), to better connect with their friends, family and coworkers.

MRE is MediaTek’s innovative middleware technology designed for mobile developers and application providers to deploy services and content for ‘Smart-Feature phones’ (Note 1). The MRE solution provides millions of users in emerging markets with the ability to enjoy rich online experiences previously available only on smartphones. MRE-enabled devices will enable many users to access leading Internet services, such as Facebook, for the first time.

According to a recent study by media research firm Informa Telecoms and Media, emerging markets will account for 60% of the mobile market by 2013. With 70% of mobile handsets sold in emerging markets being feature phones, this global partnership underscores the significant potential to present users worldwide with a gateway to access Facebook.

Last year, phones powered by MediaTek chipsets represent over 40% of the overall Indian handset market. With the launch of this global partnership, MediaTek is expecting more than half of its customers in India to adopt its MRE solution.

“Our new partnership with Facebook further reinforces MediaTek’s focus on providing differentiated services and value for handset brands, giving them the means to offer affordable, compelling and differentiated mobile solutions to consumers in key emerging markets such as India,” said Cheng-Te Chuang, Corporate Vice President of MediaTek.

Vaughan Smith, Mobile Partnerships and Corporate Development Vice President of Facebook added, “Every phone should be social and we’re excited to be working with MediaTek to bring Facebook to more devices, in more markets around the world and helping users to connect and share anywhere, anytime.”

MediaTek is currently working with leading handset brands, including Spice Group and Micromax in India, Cherry Mobile in the Philippines, and Nexian in Indonesia to roll out their mobile solutions in these key markets.

MediaTek’s chips have been a powerful force behind the worldwide mobile telephony revolution. In emerging markets such as India, the ability to offer features such as color interfaces, cameras, video recorders, QWERTY keypads and dual SIM capability at a compelling price point has driven the uptake of MediaTek-powered ‘Smart-Feature phones’.

“With MediaTek’s new MRE solution, we are in a position to redefine the mobile landscape and give our users their first mobile browsing and social networking experience on a handset that costs less than US$50,” shared Dilip Modi, Managing Director of Spice Mobility.

“This is a true breakthrough for the industry, and we are very proud to be working with a leader in innovation like MediaTek to create unprecedented value for our users across India, many of whom will access popular internet services such as Facebook for the first time via their mobile device,” added Vikas Jain, Business Director of Micromax Mobile.

leave a comment »

World-leading cellular therapy company views ‘Gateway to China’ as strategic to global expansion plans

HONG KONG, Nov. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — Laboratoires Dom AVMM (Suisse) Inc (Lab Dom) — a world-leading regenerative medicine and cellular therapy company specialising in precursor stem cell, placental extract, organ-specific and botanical cell products — is launching its innovative ’68 Days of Change’ consumer cellular therapy challenge at Hong Kong’s ‘Cosmoprof Asia 2011’ aesthetic exhibition being held from 9-11 November 2011.

The consumer campaign is aimed at encouraging exhibition attendees to experience ‘Change, with Lab Dom’ by signing up to win 68 days worth of the company’s premium cellular therapy brand — MFIII of Switzerland’s Nano Cell Extracts for Skin — and posting a daily photo update of the change to the company’s dedicated website http://www.changewithlabdom.com to share the results.

“A new era is dawning in the regenerative medicine industry, and Lab Dom is a well-respected pioneer at the forefront of that change,” explained Michelle Wong, co-founder of Lab Dom.

“We are in the business of providing the opportunity for change for humankind, and an opportunity to increase the quality of life itself. We believe our ’68 Days of Change’ challenge will open the experience of our award-winning MFIII Nano Cell Extracts to the vibrant and rapidly expanding Chinese market.”

Lab Dom’s ’68 Days of Change’ consumer incentive program will be opened to global participants at various international exhibitions in the coming months, and forms part of the company’s dynamic new stakeholder campaign ‘Change, with Lab Dom’.

“Our new stakeholder campaign is aimed at servicing stakeholders and customers around the globe at a world’s best practice level, as we embark on ambitious global expansion plans,” said Mike Chan, co-founder of Lab Dom.

“This will incorporate an innovative distribution model and channel activation program, as well as new corporate branding, which will be officially unveiled in Las Vegas in December this year.”

Hong Kong is perceived as a vital gateway to China by the company, as part of its intention to capitalise on its existing leading presence in the Asia-Pacific region and expand into China, the European Union, North and South America as well as the Middle East.

According to a study by the Canadian-based McLaughlin-Rotman Centre for Global Health (MRC), published by the UK journal Regenerative Medicine( http://www.futuremedicine.com/toc/rme/5/1 ), the Chinese government is currently investing heavily in regenerative medicine research with the aim of becoming a world leader in the field. The country’s gross domestic expenditure on research and development in the field has grown from USD 5.9 billion in 1996 to USD 44 billion today. (Note 1)

“With China expecting to play a future pivotal role in stem cell research and development, it is crucial for us to establish a key presence in this important emerging market. Our participation at this exhibition is firmly aimed at opening the opportunity for preferred partners and associates in the region to join us, share the bounty of our science and grow with our new business,” continued Mike Chan.

Hong Kong’s ‘Cosmoprof Asia 2011’ marks the fourth international event, in a series of six, that Lab Dom is participating in this year to create awareness of its new ‘Change, with Lab Dom’ stakeholder campaign. Lab Dom recently successfully introduced the campaign to the South-East Asian market, following its launch in Paris, France in September this year and the company’s first Middle East regenerative medicine conference held in Beirut, Lebanon in October.
