Safety and Efficacy of OrbusNeich’s Genous(TM) Stent Demonstrated in High-Risk Patients with Known Contraindications for Dual Antiplatelet Therapy

Results Published in EuroIntervention Indicate Positive Clinical and Safety Outcomes in High-Risk Patients Who Are Not Suitable for Treatment with Drug Eluting Stents (DES)

HONG KONG, Jan. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — Data from patients who are considered high-risk due to underlying clinical conditions and who cannot be treated with drug eluting stents (DES) and the accompanying requirement of long-term dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) showed positive safety and short- and long-term clinical outcomes following treatment with OrbusNeich’s Genous Stent, according to a study published online in EuroIntervention (published-ahead-of-print, August 2010). Known contraindications for DAPT include hypersensitivity or allergy to aspirin, a hemorrhagic risk, or a planned surgery shortly after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) that would require cessation of DAPT.

In the study, the major adverse cardiac events (MACE) free survival rate in patients treated with the Genous Stent was 80.6% after one year. Between year one and year two, no additional MACE were observed. In patients who underwent surgical treatment shortly after PCI, no perioperative MACE or thrombotic events occurred. Despite a very short period of DAPT use of 15 to 30 days, there were no cases of sub-acute, late or very late stent thrombosis in treated patients. The cumulative incidence of cardiac death was 1.6%, which is low considering the high risk patient population.

“The Genous Stent is an important and extremely attractive option for interventional cardiologists to safely manage high-risk patients who are contraindicated for prolonged DAPT and, therefore, should not receive a DES,” said Paolo Scacciatella, M.D., Ph.D., of the Molinette Hospital Turin, Italy, and principal investigator of the study. “This is the first study that demonstrates the feasibility and efficacy of the Genous Stent in this particular segment of patients who are challenging to treat.”

Emanuele Meliga, M.D., Ph.D., FESC, of Ordine Mauriziano Hospital in Turin, Italy, and corresponding author of the publication added, “We have observed that the Genous Stent, which accelerates the natural healing process, enables a shorter post-procedural period of DAPT without increasing the risk of late or very late stent thrombosis and without causing dangerous delays for patients who require noncardiac surgery shortly after PCI.”

The single-center study investigated 61 high-risk patients with a clear contraindication to prolonged DAPT. A high-risk condition was defined as meeting at least two of the following criteria: diabetes, acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, proximal vessel disease, multivessel disease, B2/C type lesions, bifurcating lesions and long lesions. The study’s primary outcome measures were the occurrences of death, MI, target vessel revascularization (TVR), target lesion revascularization (TLR) and MACE, defined as a non-hierarchical composite of all cause death, nonfatal MI or repeat revascularization.

“This study adds to the growing body of knowledge published in peer-reviewed biomedical publications that supports the use of Genous for the treatment of challenging coronary indications,” said Stephen M. Rowland, Ph.D., vice president of research and development at OrbusNeich. “We see in this case that high-risk patients with confounding co-morbidities precluding the use of DES still have an option that is safe and effective in the long-term.”

About Genous

Genous is OrbusNeich’s patented endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) capture technology that promotes the accelerated natural healing of the vessel wall after the implantation of blood-contact devices such as stents. The technology consists of an antibody surface coating that attracts EPCs circulating in the blood to the device to form an endothelial layer that provides protection against thrombosis and modulates restenosis.

The Genous Stent, which has been commercially available in more than 60 countries since 2005, has been proven as a safe, effective alternative to drug-eluting stents and is supported by data from more than 5,000 patients in companysponsored clinical studies. There is a growing body of evidence from multiple clinical studies that the Genous Stent is effective for patients who are non-responsive to or cannot tolerate long-term dual antiplatelet therapy.

China Mobile & SK Telecom Joint TD-LTE Trial Drives Commercialization of TD-LTE Forward

leave a comment »

HONG KONG, Jan. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — China Mobile (CMCC) and SK Telecom (SKT) had successfully completed the joint TD-LTE (LTE TDD) field trial in August, 2010. TD-LTE is expected to initiate the mobile broadband era and deliver competitive services to customers. The objective of the trial is to verify the functionality and performance of TD-LTE with pre-commercial equipments in real over-the-air network. The test results have demonstrated that TD-LTE performance meets the industry target, just like its gemel technology — LTE FDD.

The first and second phases of CMCC-SKT joint trial were focused on lab and small scale field test and had been completed successfully in January and May 2009 respectively. The third phase, i.e., the field trial, started from July 2010 in Seongnam, a small city near Seoul, South Korea. Over 50 test cases were defined to verify what performance can be achieved and what user experience TD-LTE will bring to customers in real scenarios.

The testing results showed that the expected TD-LTE performance is satisfying and the industry requirements can be met. Detailed results are summarized as follows:

﹛﹛– Average cell throughput (10MHz system bandwidth): Downlink average cell throughput is 14.6Mbps (spectral efficiency: 2.69bps/Hz), while uplink average cell throughput is 6.2Mbps (spectral efficiency: 1.55bps/Hz), both meeting NGMN (Next Generation Mobile Networks) requirements.
﹛﹛– Latency: Measured end-to-end latency with both pre-scheduled and non-scheduled cases can meet 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) and NGMN targets. Low latency is important to the real time services such as online gaming.
﹛﹛– Handover: Inter-eNB and intra-eNB handovers are demonstrated in the field, the success rate is 100% and data interruption time is around 30ms, meeting 3GPP and NGMN requirements.
﹛﹛– State transition: Average Idle-to-Active transition time is around 76ms and paging latency is 74ms. The low C-plane latency brings “always online” experience.
﹛﹛– Basic QoS: TD-LTE supporting GBR (Guaranteed Bit Rate) and Non-GBR services is verified and dynamically change of service priority is proved.

China Mobile and SKT are the largest wireless operators in China and South Korea respectively. The two companies have been working closely to contribute to technology development toward maturity of LTE and speed up commercialization of LTE networks since 2008.

The Rise of New Asia: Cloud Computing is the Crucial Point to Control Own Destinations

leave a comment »

TAIPEI, Jan. 12, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — Trend Micro Chairman and Founder Steve Chang attended the 2011 CommonWealth Economic Forum’s “Era of Digital Convergence” panel discussion yesterday, during which he stressed the importance of Cloud Computing in Asia. Chang said that Asian countries missed the opportunity to play a crucial role in the birth of the Internet during the last Industrial Revolution, which makes this wave of popularity in Cloud Computing important to Asian countries for two reasons. First, it will give Asian countries to “control their own destinations;” and second, it will allow Asian countries to truly join global society. That is to say, involvement in Cloud Computing will not only contribute innovation to global society to become a global citizen, but will also be the first time Asian countries have the chance to jointly formulate industry rules.

(Photo: http://www.prnasia.com/sa/2011/01/12/20110112583439.html )

Chang said, “Up till now, some Asian countries, such as those in the Greater China area, have only played a supporting role in the business process, resulting in limited profits; many Asian countries were only mere marketplaces for the high-tech industry, but through Cloud Computing, we can, for the first time, have a complete Value Chain.”

In addition, Cloud Computing will present the best solution in the face of urbanization in emerging Asian countries. According to a report by management consulting firm McKinsey & Co., China’s urban population will be approaching 350 million in 2025. “At this time, an extremely large amount of information management will rely on Cloud Computing,” says Chang. “The Beijing government agrees with this view, which is why it is actively grasping at IT independence.”

Chang also stressed the importance of professional talent in the development of Cloud Computing; training Cloud talent cannot rely on past successful experiences, but must surpass the previous limitations in the framework used by IT technical staff. At present, Trend Micro supports two Taiwan universities in Cloud Computing studies. Using this as an example, one of the universities is required to have at least half of its Cloud computing students studying non-computer science majors, in hopes of using insight from different fields to contribute to a more diverse Cloud Computing application development. At the same time, talent training will no longer emphasize the “do more, do better” mantra; rather, “do different, do unique.” The most important aspect will be the ability to see user insight, to grasp the critical thinking of Cloud development. As such, the other of the two supported universities requires professors lead students in the use of Cloud Computing technology to help SMEs improve their performance, relying on this experience to train a group of professionals who have insight into user needs, discover problems, and search for multiple solutions for the same problem.

Finally, Chang used “If not now, when? If not you, who?” to actively call on Asian countries, and not miss out on the “Lifetime Chance” of this Cloud wave.

CrimsonLogic to Develop NAF for the Kingdom of Bahrain

A first in the Middle East in using technology to manage customer identities across multiple platforms

SINGAPORE, Jan. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — CrimsonLogic, leading provider of eGovernment solutions and services, announced that it has embarked on a strategic project to develop a National Authentication Framework (NAF) for the Kingdom of Bahrain. This partnership was formalised at the contract signing ceremony held on 7 January 2011 at Movenpick Hotel in Bahrain, officiated by Guest-of-Honour, H. E. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Atteyatalla Al Khalifa, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Minister Responsible for the Telecommunications Sector.

(From left) H. E. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Atteyatalla Al Khalifa Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Minister Responsible for Telecommunications Sector, Kingdom of Bahrain, and Mr. Leong Peng Kiong, CEO of CrimsonLogic, at the signing ceremony for the National Authentication Framework project

Commissioned by the Bahrain eGovernment Authority (eGA), the establishment of the NAF will be the first of its kind in the region. It will provide a strong nationwide authentication platform that manages and safeguards customer identities across multiple service delivery channels and across various ministries. Users will enjoy the convenience of using a single electronic identity to access an array of government services, while being assured of security against online identity theft.

Authentication is critical in the use of online services in sectors like banking and finance, or government and healthcare. Bahrain will be employing a rigorous validation process called the two-factor authentication (2FA), utilising two of three recognised factors  –  a password or personal identification number (PIN), a hardware security token or a biometric trait such as a finger print, for verifying individuals – as protection against unauthorised access to sensitive information.

H. E. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Atteyatalla Al Khalifa, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Minister Responsible for the Telecommunications Sector in the Kingdom of Bahrain said, “Bahrain is committed to eGovernment development and is focused on the delivery of integrated government services, made available to citizens through their channel of choice. The agreement for the implementation of this project is signed with CrimsonLogic, because of its outstanding successful experience in eGovernment with the Singapore Government. With their expertise, we believe that the project will achieve greater success, and that this new automated system will provide help the government to provide services with high quality and efficiency.”

Mr. Mohammed Ali Al Qaed, CEO of Bahrain eGovernment Authority stated, “The project will help reduce the operating expenses of government administration by connecting all the agencies’ services, enabling users to access them through a single electronic source.”

Topping the Gulf region in the United Nations e-Government Survey 2010 (1) for its application of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) enabling citizen access and inclusion, Bahrain aims to have more than 90 per cent (2) of its key services available online. With a high demand for IT products and services in the private and public sectors, Bahrain’s ICT market is expected to reach $180 billion by 2012 (3). Increasing economic diversification in the kingdom has led to an increaseing need for dependable IT solutions and the establishment of an authentication architecture.

CrimsonLogic will also help develop content for training the end users and provide practical hands-on training for the integration of authentication functionality with various services, and provide post-implementation support.

To facilitate the delivery of project implementation, CrimsonLogic has opened an office in Bahrain, which will also provide post-implementation support in the operational phase, such as assistance in training and change management issues.

Said Mr Leong Peng Kiong, CEO of CrimsonLogic, “We are honoured to be chosen by eGA to develop and set up this framework. SINGAPORE, Dec. 31, 2010 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — PayPal today announced that Ustream Asia Inc. will accept PayPal, one of the world’s largest online payment platforms, on its website for its first-ever paid music broadcasting service in Japan and worldwide. The online music broadcast will be Ayumi Hamasaki’s New Year’s Eve concert titled “ayumi hamasaki COUNTDOWN LIVE 2010-2011 — do it again –“, to be broadcast immediately after the performance on January 1st, 2011. For more information and to buy tickets for the music broadcast, please go to http://avexnet.or.jp/ayu/cdl2010-2011/en/.

Ustream Asia chose PayPal as the online payment service for this music broadcast because of its global reach and over 230 million total users around the world. PayPal is widely used for cross-border shopping transactions as it is available in 190 markets and supports payments in 24 currencies.

Artists, performers and content providers benefit by tapping into a worldwide audience and expanding their international reach and sales with PayPal’s convenient, secure global payment platform.”

Ustream Asia integrated PayPal’s new digital goods solution with an in-context payment flow, so that users can purchase access to the streaming video of Ayumi Hamasaki’s performance in as little as two clicks and without leaving Ustream Asia’s website. In addition, PayPal users can make secure payments without entering or disclosing financial details or credit card information to shopping sites, ensuring that user privacy is protected.
